No, not a redhead. But there are freckles there if you look close enough. Soylent has moar, and Gooble is rife with it.

Desiderata, and the Road Back

I know I’ve been away from posting. If I’m honest, the events of the last month or so have been overwhelming. Just when one revelation of Hillary’s true colors comes, more police blood flows through the streets. Then comes a Jihad attack, speeches at the RNC, and yet more.  To follow them is one thing, that is my duty; but to try detailing at them all and post has been quite another.

But right now I am sitting on a bed in the home of one of my uncles, about to leave the paternal family with his

DESIDERATA

GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE & HASTE & REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideas; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all acidity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is un-folding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be Happy.

I suppose this is what I really needed after all this time, and it did speak to me a lot given where I am now. In all the many ways. For those who are interested, Desiderata is Latin for “Things Desired”, and I suppose it is fitting for it.

The poster claims it was found in a Church in 1692. As it turns out, that is about as accurate as Madame Clinton claiming she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary for his climbing of Everest. In short, it’s a bit off. If 250~ years is a bit.

It was actually written in 1927 by a guy named Max Ehrmann, who really does strike me as one of those great cases of unexamined brilliance. He’s well work checking out; ditto for his other works.

But as for me now? I think I’ve caught my bearings and am prepared to carry on.

It’s good to be back.

Gosh It Even Rhymes

Hell No, DNC, We Won’t Vote For Hillary

Thousands of demonstrators took to Philadelphia’s sweltering streets Sunday, cheering, chanting and beating drums in the first major protests ahead of the Democratic National Convention, as the city wilted during a heat wave.

Throngs of Bernie Sanders supporters marched down a main thoroughfare to show their support of him and disdain for Hillary Clinton ahead of the convention.

Chanting “Hell No, DNC, we won’t vote for Hillary” and “This is what democracy looks like,” the marchers headed from City Hall down Broad Street, the main north-south artery that leads from the city center to the convention site about 4 miles away.

Though planned for months, Sunday’s marches came as fractures appeared in the party that had been trying to display a show of unity in recent weeks. Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned Sunday as Democratic Party chair over an email suggesting the DNC had played favorites for Clinton during the primary. It was a stunning leadership shakeup as party officials gather in Philadelphia to nominate Clinton.

The Democrats had been trying to avoid the divide that was apparent in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention last week. But the hacked emails, published by Wikileaks, further fired up Sanders supporters, who long accused the party of favoring Clinton despite officially being neutral.

coffee time

And I’m off to work, coffee and banana in hand.

Thank goodness it’s raining. We need it, and it breaks the heat wave a bit.

And again, I was awake way before the alarm clock. Maybe that’s because I went to bed early. Which could have something to do with the nice G&T I made myself after dinner. Maybe.

Right. Grab the cat bag (pan scoops) and the stinky garbage (shrimp shells PU) and out the door.

L8ter.

We’re following UK policy of not showing the faces or giving the names of the alleged perpetrators.

This was a brand new roll of paper towels. And then someone decided that it needed killing. Severe killing, extra dead.

ruff week

My brother is back in the hospital. High fever, dehydrated. Talk about your misdiagnosis - some online doctor he “visited” told him he had “summer flu” but when that didn’t get better and he went to a real doctor, he wound up in the hospital straight away and tests are showing a blood clot and a big diverticulitis attack GI area of concern that merits further attention. So we’ll see what happens. Hopefully he’s getting some real care for the real problems now. Don’t know if surgery will be called for.

Helluva way to spend his birthday.

Arrggh.

WikiLeaks releases thousands of documents about Clinton and internal deliberations

Washington Post

As Hillary Clinton prepared to announce her 2016 running mate, a trove of nearly 20,000 emails were released by WikiLeaks on Friday, providing an embarrassing inside look at Democratic Party operations on the eve of the Democrats’ national convention.

The emails from the Democratic National Committee include discussions of Clinton’s chief rival for the presidential nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.); details of perks provided to party donors attending the convention; and email exchanges between party officials, journalists and others.

The emails were released with an announcement by WikiLeaks on Twitter that linked readers to a Wikileaks Page inviting visitors to “Search the DNC email database.” A search box sits underneath a one-paragraph introduction:

“Today, Friday 22 July 2016 at 10:30am EDT, WikiLeaks releases 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from the top of the US Democratic National Committee — part one of our new Hillary Leaks series,” the introduction says. “The leaks come from the accounts of seven key figures in the DNC,” including Communications Director Luis Miranda (10770 emails), National Finance Director Jordon Kaplan (3797 emails), Finance Chief of Staff Scott Comer and others. The newly released emails cover the period from January 2015 through May 25, 2016.

Got home from a day out with the hubs to this news. Hopped on Twitter to check it out. Apparently the first hashtag, #DNCLeaks was #1 trending for a while before it mysteriously disappeared. Soon thereafter, #DNCLeak started trending. That hashtag disappeared a short time later. #DemExit was trending for a while as well. The comments on the WaPo site are pretty much just what I was expecting. This makes me ALMOST want to watch the upcoming Dem convention. ALMOST....

Obviously Not A History Major

Are You Freaking Kidding Me?

Fashion Accessories [et al ?] Made From Human Skin

Alexander McQueen always made handbags to die for. But would he approve of one that he could have, literally, died for?

Hopefully he would, because an artist wants to make a leather handbag using the designer’s skin.

Tina Gorjanc, from Central Saint Martin’s art school, has produced a project, complete with patents, describing plans to use DNA extracted from McQueen’s hair to make his skin in a laboratory using cutting-edge biotechnology.

At present growing enough skin to craft a full handbag would probably be prohibitively expensive, although arguably not compared with what McQueen, who died in 2010, used to charge…

Maybe they should start smaller, with a couple book covers, or lampshades.

Holy smokes, do they teach absolutely NOTHING in school these days?

Nope. Nothing.

McQueen himself was a whacked out freak, his “darkly creative” works often being the macabre stuff of nightmares. It’s not that “I don’t get it”; I do. I just know that that kind of it needs to be hunted down and killed, then the ground beneath it burned sterile. He was a sick-ass mofo who should have been locked in the rubber room since early childhood.

But still. This Pure Human project takes his mental illness a step even further. Sure, art can often be all about stretching the borders, but when your creations fall into the realm of Arts and Crafts Day at the Third Reich you’ve gone too goddamn far.

Part art, part macabre science project, Pure Human will use authenticated DNA of McQueen to grow human skin. Goranjc will then tan the skin and use it to create jackets and bags. The human-made leather may in fact be the ultimate luxury commodity—unlike animal leather, it will be susceptible to sunburn which may give each piece a unique look and feel. She used pig skin to simulate the final process for her St. Martin’s graduate collection, where she was runner-up for a creative talent award for the project.

At first blush, the proposal may seem whimsical, but Goranjc’s concept is dead serious: she has applied for a patent for a process that extracts the DNA, implants it into a cell culture and harvests the cells for skin tissue.

Movin’ On Up

Last night was our 4th consecutive week of winning 7-0 at Summer League bowling. We’ve just been derping along, doing more drinking than hard core rolling. But we finally got our act together and decided to go for it, and we are. We’ve brought ourselves up out of last place, then up and up. When they run this week’s numbers we’ll probably wind up in about 4th or 5th place, with 5 weeks left in the mini season. That’s perhaps enough for us to clinch it if we keep on winning. And there’s really no reason we shouldn’t be winning; this year’s mix of bowlers is pretty low average. Except for our old nemesis, the team of Ken and his Mom. We face them next week, and if we romp on them there will be no stopping us.

Cool.

awesome web tool

I don’t know how to build one of these, or even what they’re called. But they’re effin’ awesome~~!!

I saw this for the first time this morning while checking out the news and gossip over in the UK online.

It looks like it runs on a Javascript, and that the parameters change in real time, even in the source code.

The little slider moves left to right in the real one (this one here is just a picture of it) and it lets you compare two pictures. But the wonder is, the images are razor sharp and the motion is smooth as glass. No sticky jumpy movement, and no rough pixels. This is awesome.

Any web coders out there know what this thing is called, or how to make one?

Bastille Day terror attack leaves dozens dead in Nice

CNN.com

The sun rose Friday morning over the Mediterranean city of Nice, devastated by what appears to be the latest, horrifying terror attack on French soil. At least 84 people have been reported dead after a truck careened through crowds on a seafront street, according to French media.

Hundreds, if not thousands, were out on the streets, celebrating Bastille Day, France’s answer to July 4th, with fireworks and a beachfront concert.

It was here, just after the last firework had fizzled out, that an apparent single driver in a large white truck first opened fire into the crowd before plowing through terrified tourists and residents, who had packed the famous Promenade des Anglais, one of the city’s main thoroughfares.

Amongst the dead, several children. At least 18 people remain in critical condition. Although the road was cordoned off, the driver managed to go more than a mile along the packed waterfront before being shot by police.

At the very least French President Francois Hollande said in an address to the nation that it was without a doubt a terrorist attack (noshitSherlock) A lot more than the current occupant of the White House would do, that’s for damn sure....

perfection

Gotta love the NY Post. Tell it like it is, much? En toto!  Here’s their article with the title that tells the whole story ...

Weenies burn flag to protest cops, get attacked by bikers, need cops to save their asses

A group of flag-burning anti-NYPD protesters needed New York’s Finest to save their skin from a gang of angry bikers who tried to pummel them in a Brooklyn park for setting Old Glory ablaze Wednesday.

The fiery stunt by a few dozen members of the group Disarm the Police led to a chaotic scene at about 8 p.m. in Fort Greene Park, when the activists enraged 40 members of the Hallowed Sons Motorcycle Club by roasting the flag on a tiny barbecue grill.

“They took off like little b—hes,” said one biker. “They lit the f–king flag and took off running once they got slapped once or twice.”

The anarchists had announced on social media that they had planned to burn the flag in protest of NYPD policies, drawing a large group of flag-waving counterprotesters, including the bikers.

...

While it’s illegal to openly burn anything in Fort Greene Park, the self-styled anarchists managed to find a loophole in the law that allows cooking in closed barbecue grills.

Thus, they started to roast the flag, but they didn’t burn it for long. One of the bikers rushed forward in a fit of rage and kicked over the grill, sending embers flying. He then doused it as members of the pro-flag crowd chanted “USA! USA!”

The bikers then started trying to rough up the protesters — who were quickly saved by members of the same police force that they criticize.

The protesters were shielded by the cops and escorted out of the park.

“I served in the Marines,” said counterprotester Brian Christopher, 23. “We defend this flag. We are ready to die for it. When I see people burning it and showing complete ignorance, it’s very offensive.”

What’s the foley effect that makes that comeuppance sound? Wat-wat-waat-waaaa
