really dark Monday

Stock market taking a big giant huge dump today. DJI down nearly 2111 points, S&P 500 and NASDAQ in the tank, VIX (volatility index, aka the fear factor) could be over 90%.

Biggest one day drop since 2008. Or maybe 1987. West Texas Crude down 33.8% and sliding.

More good news for the Dems, because Teh Russians and Teh Virus are behind it, therefore it must be Trump’s fault, right?

no

don’t wanna, ain’t gonna.

sorry. not sorry.

kung flu overdose again. it’s so much hype. when the bodies start piling up all over the world, then panic. When the death toll exceeds drunk driving, or suicides, or maybe even lightning strikes, then panic. If the numbers get bigger than the typical annual flu deaths, then it’s too late to panic, as you’re probably already sick.

Effing soviets couldn’t cut a deal with the effing sand lice on oil, so the market tanked. thanks. But it’s all due to coronavirus. STHU.

If oil drops by a third, will we see a parallel drop in gas prices? Will $2.33/gal go to $1.56? Don’t even dare to dream about that. Taxes are a big part and they won’t budge. And the oil price is not one to one with the gas price. But still, if this drop holds for a few weeks, we will see prices drop maybe by 25¢. I hope. Sure would be nice to fill up my tank for a twenty. Not that a twenty is worth anything anymore anyway.

Maybe later this week will be a good time to buy oil company stock. Because if it dives, it will bottom, and then come back. Up and down on the merry-go-round, always. As dependable as climate change.

Sexist Racist DNC Moves The Goalposts To Exculde Woman Of Color

No Debating It: DNC Changes Rules To Exclude Tulsi Gabbard From Next Debate

Under the rules that had been in place before, with a whole 2 delegates won Tulsi Gabbard was eligible to take part in the next debate. But now she can’t because the latest set of rules only allows candidate who have at least 20% so far. That means just Bernie and Joe.

The Democratic National Committee has changed its presidential debate qualifications to exclude Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D., Hawaii), the only remaining female and minority candidate in the race.

Under the newly announced rules for the March 15 CNN/Univision debate, candidates must have at least 20 percent of the awarded pledged delegates in order to qualify. In every debate since February’s Iowa caucus, any candidate who received even a single delegate automatically qualified for the debate. Gabbard won two delegates on Super Tuesday by placing second in her native American Samoa.

Elderly white male candidates Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders have already locked up the required delegates, but the rule change makes it nearly impossible for Gabbard to qualify, even with a strong showing in the next round of primaries. The congresswoman needs 335 more delegates to lock up 20 percent by March 15, but only 352 are up for grabs on March 10.

But, but Tulsi qualifies somehow as a Woman Of Color, which should make her exempt from all laws and rules, right? Not this time ...

DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa appeared to downplay the prospect of Gabbard making the debates in a Super Tuesday tweet, saying, “of course the threshold will go up.”

This looks pretty unfair. And probably racist, sexist, anti-military, anti-Hawaiian, and whatever else you can think of. But this is how the DNC machine works. Changing stuff at the last second. Which tastes of childishness, corruption, and carries the smoky odor of back room deals.

In a fair system, all the rules would be laid out ahead of time, and not subject to change. So that every would know that after Super Tuesday, if they didn’t have big numbers, then there weren’t going to get a podium of their own on TV. Which is a death knell for their campaigns.

The Phoenix debate, the 11th debate this primary season, will be hosted by CNN and Univision in partnership with CHC BOLD, the political arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper, along with Univision’s Jorge Ramos, will moderate the debate, and Univision’s Ilia Calderón also will “facilitate audience questions,” the networks announced. The debate is scheduled to run from 8 p.m. through 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

now it’s one in eight

Yet again we lost all 3 games at league, 0-7. That gives us 1 game won in the last 8 weeks; 1 out of 24. And yet somehow we’re still 14 points ahead of the last place team.

I threw a God awful 421 series, 90 pins under average. One of those was a 114. I just couldn’t get the ball to go where or how I wanted it to. Sometimes I’d miss by a hair, sometimes by a mile. Suckville. I got a couple of BK chicken sandwiches on the way home to console myself.

yeah, but understanding would require basic math skills

well no kidding

More of the same, with extra detailing:

Hemingway pointed out how Bloomberg’s failed campaign, despite unlimited resources, pokes holes in the popular narrative that Russia helped Donald Trump “steal” the 2016 election.

“We had years where people were saying a couple hundred thousand dollars in barely literate Facebook ads from Russians caused Donald Trump to win. Here you had a guy spend nearly $1 billion and he went nowhere. It’s a humiliating defeat for Michael Bloomberg,” she said.

Host Bret Baier drilled the point home: “So Russians influenced the election with $200,000, or $300,000 in Facebook ads? And Mike Bloomberg couldn’t get more than 50 delegates with $600 million dollars?”

“And this hurts Bernie Sanders’s message, too, because he likes to say the billionaires control everything,” Hemingway said. “Clearly Bloomberg having all this money didn’t do as much for him as Biden having the media and the establishment behind him. I would pick media and establishment over millions all day.”

It’s now two days after little Mike withdrew his nomination, and I’m over here wondering if his buyer’s remorse is setting in. A big thanks to little Mike. He effectively destroyed the liberal establishment media narrative about “the impact” of Russian Bot Facebook ads; what an epic fail for the Dems.

I mean, to come up with the Russian Facebook narrative, to begin with, and now for one of their own to completely dismantle it – it’s delicious. And I’m here to relish in the fact that a Democrat destroyed the BS Democrat narrative. This one factor alone was worth the hundreds of millions in cold hard cash he spent with his pathetic media minions.

Fox News’ Mollie Hemingway’s narrative over at The Federalist.

PS - the embarrassing math thing. One of many actually.

Bio Jihad?

Pretty much what I implied the other day. If you think this is an accident, or just a case of someone being uppity and stubborn, think again.

Italy: Patient Zero is a Pakistani who ignored quarantine to deliver take-out Chinese food to hundreds

The man, a Pakistani, although asymptomatic, was invited by Italian health authorities to place himself in quarantine at his home in the Pavia area, but did not follow the suggestion and went on as if nothing had happened at the Chinese restaurant where he worked.

A young man of Pakistani origin residing in a municipality of Lomellina, in the Pavia area, tested positive for the Coronavirus and was asked to stay home for two weeks so as not to infect others.

According to Adnkronos, instead the foreigner ignored what should be common sense, and thought it well not to respect the quarantine. And he compounded the risk by making home deliveries of Chinese food.

Fortunately, the Carabinieri of the local station, who intervened following an anonymous report by some particularly attentive citizen, thought about stopping the careless migrant. The military intervened to return him to his home, at least for the period provided for by the protocol in cases like this.

The migrant was reported for failure to comply with the provisions of the judicial authority, an offense for which imprisonment of up to three months is foreseen or a maximum fine of 206 euros, as required by article 650 of the Italian penal code.

The Carabinieri have been busy reconstructing all the movements of the young man, in order to identify as many people as possible with whom he came into contact. In the meantime, the military has closed the Chinese restaurant.

The province of Pavia, as well as the entire Lombardy region, has been particularly affected by the Coronavirus epidemic. The alarming numbers led to the decision to keep Italian schools closed for another week, not only in Lombardy but also in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, as well as other regions.

And just like Kung Flu, this bio-jihad attitude is contagious too.

Expect such actions to become major felonies real soon, and expect that even saying such things will soon be categorized as hate crimes.

Let no crisis go to waste. Forward the State!!

All Hail King Cuomo

If a knee jerk reaction is high enough, you can get kicked in the nutz.

“a reckless expansion of executive power”

When even Progressives feel that giving the executive branch more power is too much, what have they done??

In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the state legislature approved $40 million in emergency funding to help contain the COVID-19 outbreak in New York. Buried within the legislation is a provision that has alarmed progressive lawmakers and advocates: an extraordinary, broad, and little-understood expansion of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s emergency powers.
...
With the support of both legislative leaders, the emergency funding bill overwhelmingly passed the Democrat-controlled Assembly and State Senate. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Majority Leader, and Carl Heastie, the Speaker of the State Assembly, pushed for its passage, overriding the concerns of the health committee chairs in both chambers.

Cuomo did not offer a detailed explanation of his push to expand his emergency powers, telling reporters that “these are uncharted territories” and that “government has to respond.”

The whole process was rushed, in typical Albany fashion. Word came Monday afternoon that legislation would be coming to the floor from the governor’s office, Gottfried said. The state’s health commissioner, Howard Zucker, had met with Assembly Democrats for a briefing, making no mention of the need of additional emergency powers.

The Assembly and Senate hardly debated the bill. It passed both houses after midnight, with little time to read it or seek outside counsel. The Senate approved the measure 53-4, while the Assembly voted 120 to 12 in favor.

Though New York law already allows Cuomo to suspend provisions of any state or local statute that would delay in coping with a declared disaster, the new measure goes further, broadening the definition of disaster from a “past occurrence” to something that is “impending.”

Way to go. You’ve just weaponized the nanny state.

“That nuclear reactor at Indian Point could have a melt down in 50 years. It’s an impending disaster! Shut it down forever!!”

“Too many gasoline cars are driving too fast on the Thruway. It’s an impending disaster!! Ban them all; all cars must be electric with a top speed of 45mph!!”

“Guns in the home could lead to so many more accidental deaths. It’s an impending disaster!! Disarm the public right this moment. All violators will be shot!!”

“Electing somebody else as governor could ruin all of our Progressive achievements. It’s an impending disaster!! Andrew Cuomo is now Governor For Life, to be followed by his first born son and his son thereafter! Or his brother Fredo, if he feels like it.”

They Just Like To Kill

Afghanistan seems to have some kind of shared mindset with da hood

90 Shot At Afghan Peace Ceremony
at least 29 dead so far

KABUL, Afghanistan — Gunmen opened fire Friday at a ceremony in Afghanistan’s capital attended by prominent political leaders, killing at least 29 people and wounding dozens more before the two attackers were slain by police, officials said.

The Taliban denied they were behind the attack, which came less than a week after the U.S. and the group signed an ambitious peace deal that lays out a path for the withdrawal of American forces from the country.

While no one has claimed responsibility for the bloodshed, Afghanistan’s upstart Islamic State affiliate has declared war on the country’s minority Shiites. Many of those at the ceremony were Shiites because it was commemorating the 1995 slaying of Abdul Ali Mazari, the leader of Afghanistan’s ethnic Hazaras, who are mostly Shiite.

There were conflicting accounts of the number of casualties in the attack in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood of Kabul. The Health Ministry reported 32 people were killed and 58 were wounded, while the Interior Ministry reported 29 dead and 61 wounded. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.

Opposition leader Abdullah Abdullah, who is the country’s chief executive and was a top contender in last year’s presidential election, was among several prominent political officials who attended the ceremony but left before the attack and were unhurt.

Several TV journalists were covering the ceremony inside an walled compound when the gunmen began shooting, and a reporter and a cameraman for a local broadcaster were among the wounded.

Karim Khalili, the chief of Afghanistan’s high peace council, was delivering a speech when the gunfire interrupted him. He was not hurt and later went on TV to denounce the violence.

The treaty the US signed with the Taliban didn’t last 48 hours before they started shelling again, killing at least 11 locals in the bombardment.

Get the Hell out of this place, send any and all of their refugees here back there, and never let any of them into our country ever again. No trade, no financial aid. We don’t need any more feral psychotic savages. We have enough of our own.

Come Again Captain Kirk?

Bill Shatner, 88, Now Divorced For 4th Time. Gets Custody Of All The Horse Semen

Hollyweird or just tabloid journalism? Both!

William Shatner and his ex-wife Elizabeth Martin have divvied up their assets and it looks like the award-winning actor is walking away with the former couple’s supply of horse semen.

The “Star Trek” actor, 88, filed for divorce from Martin in December after 18 years of marriage. Court records show the exes reached a divorce settlement this week and their takeaways from the belongings they shared are unique, to say the least.

According to reports, Shatner and Martin split up their four horses, with the actor scoring Renaissance Man’s Medici and Powder River Shirley, while Martin will get Belle Reve’s So Photogenic and Pebbles.

Poor writing. Either they split up ownership of their horses, or else they borrowed a really large chainsaw.

It would be fun watching Shatner walking away with a few 5 gallon buckets of pony in a bottle and trying to claim it as his carry-on to TSA at the airport.

going viral

too darn many news stories on Kung Flu

•  Sick guy was told by doc to stay home. He goes to party. Now everybody is kung flu fighting. What a dick. I expect to see nearly instant and very strong changes in social behavior as this thing runs rampant. Everyone will be watching everyone for coughs, sneezes, touching, etc. Sanitizer wipes will be everywhere. Pack your mask and your nitrile gloves in your pockets.

•  Welcome to NJ. Yeah, it’s those same people who had the big measles thing last year, and before that the hepatitis outbreak. Not the best way to win friends.

•  Airport health screener has it. I have to wonder, how many people did he infect and not know it? Some jobs should be done by robots.

•  Darn, you can no longer kiss your dog in Hong Kong. Despite doggie masks, pets are getting sick with this too.

•  Hungary gets it, but not from Chinese. From Iranians. Hasn’t the world put them all on lockdown yet?? And now that Turkey has opened their borders to the EU, is a new biological diaspora intifada starting up? Zombie Apocalypse? This kind of thing can lead to war. Bad.

•  The American Solution: Bury the disease in money and pork Congress approves $7.8 billion to do whatever it takes. 3 times more than Trump asked for. Sorry, I’m too much of a cynic to wonder which shysters are going to get even richer from this, and I expect ZERO fiscal accountability. Exactly 2 Republicans voted against it, saying it was way too much money for now. Maybe later, but not now.

•  Latest fatality: small airlines? Maybe our One World masters should just put a leash on the banks and credit card companies for a while, and ready some kind of virus welfare handouts for the millions who are going to lose work, jobs, homes.

Warren Drops Out

Meh, I’d hoped she last at least a week past Super Tuesday. Nope.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the 2020 presidential race Thursday after a disappointing Super Tuesday in which she failed to win even her home state—a development that could boost Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign by making him the lone progressive standard-bearer in the Democratic field.

But, while making the widely expected announcement outside her Cambridge home with her husband Bruce by her side, the Massachusetts senator declined to make an endorsement at this stage.

“Not today,” Warren said, noting that she wanted more time to think about the decision.

Her exit essentially leaves the race as a one-on-one battle between Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is surging after claiming a stunning 10 victories on Super Tuesday. Warren first revealed the decision in a late-morning, all-staff call on Thursday.

Well. let’s not forget that Tulsi Gabbard is still in it too, and after winning ONE delegate in Samoa she’s qualified to be in the next debate. Unless the DNC changes the rules again, but doing so would be actively shutting out a Woman Of Color, so that’s bad optics. And she’s a she, and decades younger than either of those other too super seniors, plus the military thing and so on. So maybe her star is about to shine forth. Let’s see what happens.

Moving That WIBCO Phoenix Bowstring

Ok, I’m a month behind on this one.

Pick It Up And Put It Away
Minnesota Engineers Remove 1873 Kern Bridge From Crumbling Foundations
Longest bowstring arch truss in USA, one of the few Phoenix column bridges left, this iron maiden is going to be warehoused and put somewhere else, someday

image

A southern Minnesota bridge nearly as old as the state itself is on the road to a new home, after being delicately moved from its precarious perch on Thursday.

Crews using a pair of cranes carefully lifted the 147-year-old, 189-foot-long Kern Bridge in one piece, off its crumbling abutments along the Le Sueur River and alongside a nearby town road.

“We were all kind of holding our breath,” said Lisa Bigham, state aid engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s District 7. “It took a while to get everything kind of in place, the cranes to be positioned where they needed to be. Then, we were just kind of watching. And then, all of a sudden you could see air in between the bridge and the abutment. And it actually went very smoothly.”

...

The Kern Bridge had spanned the Le Sueur River south of Mankato, Minn., since 1873, just 15 years after Minnesota became a state.

Also known as the Yaeger Bridge, it carried people, wagons and farm animals, then cars until being closed to traffic in the early 1990s.

MnDOT reported that it’s the only remaining example of a “bowstring arch through-truss” bridge left in Minnesota, and the longest remaining in the United States. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kern Bridge was built of wrought iron in 1873 by the prolific Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, OH (WIBCO), who built for the long haul; hundreds of their bridges are still in use today. As a testament to it’s strength, cranes picked up this nearly 150 year old bridge by both ends and it didn’t bend or break. Well done WIBCO.

This one is a very rare puppy though. It is of the older bowstring arch truss design, not a Pratt or a Warren through truss. And the arch is made of Phoenix columns, specially bent to order by the iron masters at the Phoenix Iron Company. So it’s rare X rare X rare. It is nearly 100% original, which is also highly rare for such an old bridge.

The bridge was closed to vehicles in 1990. Plenty of more information and photos located here.

image

Phoenix columns ... are pretty riveting.

Hey Goombah, Thanks For Nothing!!

23 Italian Tourists Visit India. 17 Have Coronavirus.

A group of Italian tourists have been put in quarantine in India, with 17 testing positive for the new coronavirus, a source told AFP Wednesday.

Italy is a hotspot of the deadly virus with 79 deaths and more than 2,500 infected, while India’s official case total stands at only 21.

After two out of a group of 23 tourists who arrived in the country last month tested positive in the western state of Rajasthan, the other 21 were put under quarantine in a special facility in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“Out of the 21 tourists, 15 have been tested positive for coronavirus. We are awaiting test results of the others,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

Worldwide around 3,200 people have died from the virus with more than 90,000 infections, with China, South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan the worst affected.

India has now stepped up preventative measures including barring visitors from Italy, Iran, South Korea and Japan, except diplomats and officials from international bodies.

No doubt they won’t let anyone from China in either, but I guess that’s a given at this point pretty much anywhere in the world.
