Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Friday that long-term environmental racism and income inequality were causing coronavirus to disproportionately affect minorities.

“COVID deaths are disproportionately spiking in Black + Brown communities,” Ocasio-Cortez began, explaining that the reason for that was related to decades of racial and income inequality.

Ocasio-Cortez then argued that long-term policies had created a different kind of “underlying health condition,” adding, “Why? Because the chronic toll of redlining, environmental racism, wealth gap, etc. ARE underlying health conditions.”

“Inequality is a comorbidity,” Ocasio-Cortez concluded by calling for reparations to those hardest hit. “COVID relief should be drafted with a lens of reparations.”

“Giant asteroid hits Earth. Millions killed. Minorities disproportionately affected.”

SSDD. No matter what the issue is, it’s always minorities being hardest hit. Because raycis. So throw MORE money at them. Always. Forever.

The commie bartender then yaps about what government should do ... yeah, if we lived in a totalitarian Socialist state. It’s a miracle she didn’t call for student loan forgiveness too. This time.

Hospital Ship Empty

UPDATE 4/6/20 5pm: NY Governor Cuomo Tweets that President Trump will allow the USNS Comfort to accept COVID-19 patients, adding 1000 beds to the NYC health infrastructure.
I guess you could say the ship is in “re-mission”? nyuk nyuk nyuk.

The USNS Comfort, the Navy hospital ship that docked in New York Harbor this week as part of a greater effort to relieve hospitals overrun by an influx of coronavirus patients, only had 20 patients aboard as of Thursday evening.

The ship, equipped with 1,000 beds, 12 operating rooms, and 1,200 personnel, has not come close to reaching its capacity, taking on just 20 patients as of Thursday, a Navy spokeswoman confirmed Thursday evening.

“The process continues and we are honestly looking forward to seeing a significant increase in patients being transferred to the Comfort,” Capt. Patrick Amersbach said.

The ship was never intended to take patients with coronavirus. Rather, it is expected to lessen the load on local hospitals battling the virus by taking patients with other illnesses or traumas. However, there are reportedly 49 medical conditions “that would exclude a patient from admittance to the ship.”

Some say the bureaucratic tape is preventing the ship from accepting more patients. Officials, for instance, cannot transfer a patient to the vessel until he or she is thoroughly examined at a local hospital, including undergoing a test for the virus, and cleared.

“Ambulances cannot take patients directly to the Comfort; they must first deliver patients to a city hospital for a lengthy evaluation — including a test for the virus — and then pick them up again for transport to the ship,” according to the Times.

Ok, how to fix this? Idea: set up a couple of tents or Quonset huts on the dock to work as a triage center, and process walk-ins as well. Keep the patient transfer system they have in place, but augment it with a few dozen military ambulances if necessary. It may be a stretch, a fantasy, but I’d extend the triage center to also include something like the Urgent Care offices that are all over the place. Regular doctor’s office for walk-ins, staffed by docs and PAs. And everybody who comes in the door gets one of those 15 minute COVID tests, and then a pack of HCQ and a pack of zinc supplements. People who actually test positive get a Z-Pack too (and a free mask), and the folks with mild symptoms or no symptoms are sent on their way. Maybe severe virus patients get transferred back (or to) a regular hospital. Maybe they need to put up a couple more tents on the dock just for that. My point is that you deal with the medical need you’ve got, and it doesn’t have to be an either/or thing.

I don’t know what these 49 exempted conditions are. Duh, it’s a good bet the hospital ship isn’t an oncology center. Cancer. But I bet they’ll deliver babies. Come on, theses ships were designed to handle combat casualties. So gunshot victims, blunt force trauma, burns, concussions, etc, are their bailiwick. OTOH, they’ve got doctors and nurses, so see what you can do to extend their care coverage. General illness, asthma, rashes, poisoning. Eye care and dental? I really don’t know what the ships are capable of, but if they can do something close to full service medical care, than that’s what they should do. And it’s free.

But cut the red tape. Don’t thin it out, eliminate it. And cut the fiscal aspect of it too: is there even a tiny chance that hospitals aren’t transferring patients because that would cut their insurance billing? Can’t have that kind of attitude, not right now.

On the third hand, with the city pretty much shut down, shootings, car accidents, and job injuries are way down. I don’t have the numbers for domestic violence or other medical things that happens when everybody stays home all the time.

One Way To Stop Corona At The Source

Grupo Modelo announced on Thursday that it will suspend production of Corona beer as it scales down production under orders from the Mexican government.

The brewer, which also manufactures Pacifico and Modelo brand beers, is reducing production work down to the minimum necessary to resume production when restrictions are lifted. They also released a statement explaining that production could resume “if the government considers it appropriate to issue some clarification confirming beer as an agro-industrial product.”

In either case, the company is “ready to execute a plan with more than 75 per cent of our staff working from home and at the same time guaranteeing the supply of beer,” the statement said. As it stands, production will officially cease on Sunday.

Data To Ignore

Merely “Anecdotal” Data: Worldwide Consensus of 6227 Doctors: Chloroquine Works Best

I gather from the MSM that “Anecdotal” is newspeak for snide dismissal from your betters.

An international poll of more than 6,000 doctors released Thursday found that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine was the most highly rated treatment for the novel coronavirus.

The survey conducted by Sermo, a global health care polling company, of 6,227 physicians in 30 countries found that 37% of those treating COVID-19 patients rated hydroxychloroquine as the “most effective therapy” from a list of 15 options.

Hydroxychloroquine, which is sold under the brand name Plaquenil, was prescribed mainly in the United States for the most severe cases, but not so in other countries.

“Outside the U.S., hydroxychloroquine was equally used for diagnosed patients with mild to severe symptoms whereas in the U.S. it was most commonly used for high risk diagnosed patients,” the survey found.

The 30 nations surveyed included those in Europe, Asia, North America and South America, as well as Australia. No incentives were provided to participate in the poll, conducted March 25-27, according to Sermo.

What is missing from this news article is how effective it has been found to be. Or not to be.

•The two most common treatment regimens for Hydroxychloroquine were:
•(38%) 400mg twice daily on day one; 400 mg daily for 5 days.
•(26%) 400mg twice daily on day one; 200mg twice daily for 4 day

The standard HCQ pill is 200mg. So we’re talking about a maximum of 14 pills per person for a 6 day treatment plan of the first regimin above.

Average Time for COVID-19 Test:

•On average tests in the US take 4-5 days, and in 10% of cases the wait is more than 7 days.

•14% of US physicians and over 50% in all of Europe and Japan report getting test results in 24 hours; in China 73% of doctors get tests back in 24 hours, while 8% get tests back within the hour

The ENTIRE WORLD is 4-5 times better than us at test turnaround time. Somebody (CDC, FDA perhaps) has seriously screwed the pooch here.

Not to point out yet again that this stuff may do a better job with the lighter cases. It’s not like we don’t have tens of millions of these pills here. But we may be over focusing on the wrong patient group, to the exclusion of the others. The greatest help for the greatest number? The needs of the many versus the needs of the few? Does it really have to be an either/or thing when we have the capacity to do both?

By the time you read this we will have a quarter million cases in the USA. At 14 per, that adds up to 3.5 million pills. Pretty sure we’ve got at least 50 million at this point. WHAT THE FUCK IS THE PROBLEM HERE?? Oh, I forgot. “Anecdotal”. And Trump.

US Navy Relieves Captain Of Corona Carrier USS Roosevelt
He emailed his concerns to too many people. In the Navy. And one of them leaked it to the press. So he gets burned. Douche-a-rama.

Yeah, and if he’d strictly followed the chain of command, and sent it encrypted, they would have buried it, denied it, and sat on it forever.

The Navy announced it has relieved the captain who sounded the alarm about an outbreak of COVID-19 aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Capt. Brett Crozier, who commands the Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier with a crew of nearly 5,000, was relieved of his command Thursday, but he will keep his rank and remain in the Navy.

Crozier raised the alarm this week, sending a strongly worded letter to Navy leadership that detailed his concerns about the spread of the virus on the ship. The letter leaked to the media and generated a series of headlines.

Speaking at a news conference Thursday evening, Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said Crozier was removed from his post because he sent the letter over “non-secure unclassified email” to a “broad array of people” rather than up the chain of command.

“I have no doubt in my mind that Captain Crozier did what he thought was in the best interest of the safety and well-being of his crew,” Modly said. “Unfortunately, it did the opposite. It unnecessarily raised the alarm of the families of our sailors and Marines with no plans to address those concerns.”

There’s the truth: the Navy has no plans to address these concerns. Because they’ve only known about the virus since ...before Christmas? Seriously, if our zillion dollar intelligence agencies didn’t spot this well ahead of the international media, and get word out to the military, especially those in that theater, then WTH good are they??

Holy crap. I’m just a doofus blogger and I had heard of the virus before New Year’s and the chloroquine approach since mid February at the latest.

Governor HalfWhit the hypocrite now wants medicine she just denied the other day

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration has requested an emergency supply of the drugs President Trump touted as having success treating patients with severe symptoms of the novel coronavirus, in a reversal from the state’s directive to medical professionals last week to avoid the medication for this purpose.

Michigan, this week, requested hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine from the Strategic National Stockpile for physicians to use to help treat patients with COVID-19, after the Food and Drug Administration over the weekend granted an emergency use authorization for the anti-malarial drugs.

But last week, Whitmer’s administration threatened physicians prescribing the drugs, saying they were subject to “administrative action” should they continue to use the medication.

Actions have consequences. Michigan has had plenty of time to overthrow their governor by now. They haven’t, so to hell with them. Maybe I’m going stir-crazy from the isolation. Maybe I’ve just had it up to here with the hypocrisy, treason, and dirty politics. Fuck this woman, and fuck her entire state.

PK. I’ll soften that up. Having now proved her utter incompetence and her absolute lack of concern over the welfare of the people of Michigan, Governor Whitmer should immediately resign in disgrace. Then and only then can Michigan get some pills and some PPE gear.

Pelosi Pushing Tax Cuts For The Rich

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is pushing for a new stimulus bill that would roll back the state and local tax deduction (SALT) cap, a proposal that would predominantly help wealthy individuals — including most residents in Pelosi’s district and perhaps even Pelosi herself.

A 2019 report from the Joint Committee on Taxation projected that of those who would face lower tax liability from the elimination of the SALT cap – which only affects those who itemize tax deductions – 94 percent earn at least $100,000. The government would lose out on $77.4 billion in tax dollars, with more than half of that amount being saved by taxpayers earning $1 million or more. Those earning more than $200,000 would reap most of the balance.

But ain’t the Dems always screaming that the rich should pay their fair share?

What a self-serving hypocrite. Yeah, like that’s news.

Just a reminder, this SALT cap hasn’t made much of an impact in states with reasonable levels of taxation. It only has a big impact in the high tax states like CA, NY, NJ. And a funny thing, all those places seem to be run by Dems, since forever.

Lunatic Casey Jones Tries To Sink Hospital Ship With Locomotive

SAN PEDRO, LOS ANGELES (KABC)—An engineer deliberately ran a train off the tracks at high speed near the Port of Los Angeles in an attempt to crash into and damage the USNS Mercy hospital ship, prosecutors say.

The Pacific Harbor Line train derailed Tuesday, running through the end of the track and crashing through barriers, finally coming to rest about 250 yards from the docked naval ship.

Federal prosecutors allege train engineer Eduardo Moreno, 44, of San Pedro intended to hit the ship, saying he thought it was “suspicious” and did not believe “the ship is what they say it’s for.’”

The train crashed into a concrete barrier at the end of the track, smashed through a steel barrier and a chain-link fence, slid through one parking lot and then a second lot filled with gravel and hit a second chain-link fence. It came to rest after passing under a ramp leading to the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The train remained in that position Wednesday.

No one was injured in the derailment, but the train leaked fuel that required a hazmat response.

The U.S. Navy hospital ship Mercy received its first patients Sunday after docking at the Port of Los Angeles.

Authorities say Moreno admitted to crashing the train intentionally, but said he did not plan in out in advance. It is believed that he acted alone.

He allegedly made statements to a CHP officer that included “You only get this chance once. The whole world is watching. I had to. People don’t know what’s going on here. Now they will.”

Officials say video from inside the train’s cab shows Moreno holding a lighted flare during the incident.

Moreno has been charged with one count of train wrecking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

To be an honest journalist, it wasn’t the whole train, just the locomotive. And it didn’t actually derail as much as it went off the end of the in a siding, knocking down the stop barrier, a steel highway barrier, some concrete lane divider barriers, and a couple hundred yards of pavement. The guy may be loco, but his idea had merit; it was flat, open, and paved the whole way from the siding to the ship. Except the pavement wasn’t made to support 200 tons of engine on sharp edged wheels. It dug in and eventually came to a stop. Plus the stern of the hospital ship wasn’t quite up against the dock, so the choo-choo would have had to swim the gap. And choo-choos are the worst swimmers out there.

I’d tell you how much this particular locomotive weighs, but I’m a bridge spotter not a train spotter, so I don’t know my engines. Looks pretty damn big to me though.

It’s Strange Out There

Our local grocery store has added plexiglass shields around the check outs.  I guess it works as some kind of cough barrier. And they only have every other register open to provide lateral social distancing. 6 foot markers all over the floors.At least they don’t have security guy outside with a counter. or one way aisles. Yet. They’re doing that across the river in NY. X number of customers in the store, nobody else gets in until somebody leaves.

We broke down and got some take out Thai from our local restaurant. We’ve been a bit hesitant to do this, because we don’t know the condition of the folks doing the cooking. But they put up a reassuring message online, so we went for it. Pick your selections from the online menu, call them up, give them your name and credit card info. The place has a short right angle entryway to keep the wind out. They have a table across the end of it, and our bag was on the table, with the credit card slip next to it. One visible employee, behind the regular counter 20 feet away. I waved. We’d ordered 3 lunches, so we had plenty to eat. Nice glass noodle chicken soup came with the meals. Gave them a nice tip too. I’d pulled up right in front, so I was in and out in 30 seconds. The food was good, but the experience was kind of strange.

We’d talked a few days ago that everywhere might become a plexiglass city. That’s the term for city stores in high crime areas. You go in the door into a cubicle of bulletproof glass, place your order, put your money in the slot, and a little door opens with your stuff. That might be where the world is going.

OTOH, our grocery store started up Shop From Home quite some time ago, and they deliver. Sure, you pay extra for that. But now, that practice might make a lot of sense. “Free toilet paper with every order over $100!!” It could work.

Gee, Too Bad

The onslaught of the coronavirus has not only sent the global economy tumbling – but it has also hit the black market where it hurts, and Mexican cartels are no exception.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has sent the price of heroin, methamphetamines, and fentanyl soaring as the likes of the Sinaloa cartel and its main rival the Jalisco “New Generation” struggle to obtain the necessary chemicals to make the synthetic drugs, which typically come from China but are now in minimal supply.

“The cartels have suffered from COVID-19 due to the inability to get the regular shipments of synthetic opioids and precursor chemicals for the massive production of meth from China,” Derek Maltz, a former special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Operations Division in New York, told Fox News. “The cartels have continued their production at a slower rate, but the demand seems to be increasing during these times of uncertainty in America. The shutdown of cities in China and travel in and out of China have also negatively impacted the flow of chemicals and drugs to Mexico.”

According to Maltz, the cartels have raised the prices of their products – as much as 400 percent – and “will get through the tough times,” especially since their business is so profitable.

Golly, that’s a terrible shame. And maybe with the borders closed somewhat more, they’re having a harder time smuggling it in as well. Sucks for them. Guess they’ll just have to try and get by with the hundreds of billions in cash they have sitting around.

I don’t think demand is going to decrease one bit. Junkies gotta junk, and will go without food or paying any other bills to spend what money they have on getting high. That’s what addiction means.

KIRYAS JOEL - Village leaders and community groups issued a joint statement on Tuesday rebuking a local doctor’s predictions about the spread of the coronavirus and urging him to stop posting videos online about the outbreak or else leave Kiryas Joel and the Hasidic community out of them.

The unusual public plea from the village’s main congregation, health center and other organizations came after Dr. Vladimir Zelenko recorded at least seven videos, including one that predicted a rampant spread of COVID-19 in Kiryas Joel and another that led Fox News host Sean Hannity to invoke the community on his radio and TV shows on Monday.

“We the undersigned institutions strongly believe that the predictions presented by Dr. Zelenko have been proven false and are not supported by the overall medical establishment, specifically in his wild conclusions as to the spread of the virus in our community,” the letter stated.

They said those statements had spurred discrimination against its residents and made it difficult to staff local businesses that remain open during the state emergency. Zelenko had estimated 90% of Kiryas Joel had COVID-19 after 9 of his first 14 tests came back positive — a conclusion the Orange County health commissioner blasted as irresponsible.

About 25,000 people live in the Kiryas Joel community. Last time I checked, they only had 14 cases officially. Now he’s treated nearly 700? Either he really REALLY gets around, or else the local rumors (that Kiryas has 75% of all the cases in Orange County) are pretty much true.

In another report, scientists claim Tocilizumab has been shown to help cure 95 percent of critically ill coronavirus patients in China. Tocilizumab, which is marketed as Actemra, is taken by patients with rheumatoid arthritis to reduce inflammation. Chinese doctors gave it to 20 patients during the peak of of coronavirus epidemic. Nineteen of the patients were discharged within 14 days despite being critically ill. Actemra has now been approved for use in China and for trials in the US

Tocilizumab, also known as atlizumab, is an immunosuppressive drug, mainly for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a severe form of arthritis in children. It is a humanized monoclonal antibody against the interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R).

I guarantee you Actemra costs a whole lot more than generic Plaquenil and generic Z-Pack. And some vitamin pills. Yeah, I picked up on the zinc angle a couple weeks back. Vitamin C and D too, also rumored to help. Taking selenium, another metallic supplement, was an earlier rumor.

Not really related to this at all ... but little Putnam County NY, just north of Westchester (which has 8519 cases, 2nd in the nation only to it’s southern neighbor NYC), has a mere 142 cases. How is this possible?  Both counties are populous bedroom communities; commuters to NYC. Right across the Hudson, Orange County is also one these days, although it was the back of beyond as recently as 1985. Rockland has always been, ever since the bridges opened.

Out Of Time

Yeah I know, it’s quarter to one in the morning. We both should be asleep by now, for a couple hours at least. But it’s not like we have to get up in the morning. We’ve kind of lost contact with time. It’s Monday now, I know that. But we’ll get up when we get up, and snoodle around the house all day doing whatever. More cleaning, more going through old clothes. Maybe make a bread? Meh, we managed to buy a regular loaf the other day so we’re set. Plenty of food in the house so we don’t have to go to the grocery store. Or the gas station. Or anywhere.

She’s working on her closet. Really going through all of it. She found her first bowling ball, a 10lb Power Groove. What a POS. It moved in with us, even though it was long out of use even then. She’s throwing a 13 pounder these days. Someday we hope to bowl again. When life is allowed to restart. But not today. Or this week. Probably not even this month. THIS SUCKS.

Sanitized For Your Protection

I did my weekly cleaning down in SP today. I’m a week late, but the place is closed like everything else. I figure I’d give any virus crap an extra week to die.

Then I went over the entire office with D-128. I used a full half gallon in my little sprayer, extra strength. Every hard surface. And my usual vacuuming and mopping. I was there three times longer than usual, but the place is as spotless and as sanitized as I can make it. Too bad they don’t have a carpet steaming machine or I would have used that too. So if, or when, the place ever opens again, it’s good to go. Driving down there, the highways were nearly empty. That office is in a large shopping center. Empty, except for a few rare people getting take out from the restaurants. It feels weird.

So I’m furloughed until they open again. What can you do?

At least OrangeManBad didn’t quarantine the whole NY/NJ metro area. Yet. AFAIK. And no new edicts from our commie governor “Red” Murphy either. Crossing my fingers.
