Women ‘enslaved’ by Arab royals
By Bruno Waterfield in Brussels
Last Updated: 8:27PM BST 02/07/2008Seventeen women have been taken by police from a luxury hotel in Brussels amid allegations that they had been enslaved by an Arab royal family.
Police officers and officials from Belgium’s Labour Audit Authority raided the Conrad Hotel, the city’s most prestigious and the preferred choice of many national leaders during European Union summits, on Tuesday evening.
The operation was triggered by the apparent escape of a maid who was among 20 servants working for the widow of a senior royal figure from the United Arab Emirates and her four daughters who have rented the entire fourth floor of the hotel for the last year.
Officials took away 17 people, from countries including the Philippines, Morocco, India, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Syria, amid allegations they had been held captive for eight months.
Several members of the royal party have been questioned, police said yesterday. No charges have been brought but the investigation continues.
“We are convinced that these 17 girls are victims of people trafficking,” said an official.
The servants, dubbed “slaves” in the Belgian media, allegedly had to be at the service of the Arab royals 24 hours a day and had their passport taken away on arrival in Belgium. The women were reportedly not allowed to leave the hotel and their monthly salaries were as low as £80 a month.
“We were not allowed to leave the hotel and we had to be at their disposal 24 hours a day,” claimed one young woman of Middle Eastern origin.
“We were not allowed to complain or to ask any questions. We just had to be there at their beck and call.”
Last week four maids from the Philippines allegedly attempted to escape from the hotel. Three were detained by the royal family’s security staff but the fourth woman managed to alert the Belgian police.
There was no response last night from the Brussels embassy of the UAE when it was contacted to comment on the case.
Most Belgian newspapers have described the case as “slavery right in the heart of Brussels”.
The chic and pricy Conrad Hotel, “where you can discover the luxury of being yourself”, is situated on the city’s Avenue Louise and surrounded by the most expensive shops in Brussels.
The price of a room begins at £260 and a hotel spokesman, who refused to comment on the raid, was unable to give the cost of renting an entire floor.
The hotel’s website boasts: “The largest, most sophisticated luxury hotel guestrooms in Brussels, an unrivalled guest service commitment and the unparalleled cuisine of our hotel restaurant all come together at the Conrad Brussels.”
The hotel is frequented by Europe’s royals and national leaders, including British Prime Ministers, during trips to Brussels and for EU summits.
In a separate case in Gevena involving a senior figure from the UAE, Sheikh Fallah bin Zayed Al-Nahayan, the brother of the president has been found guilty and fined after using his belt to beat an American man who he thought had suggested he was gay.

Even More BS From The Arabs
Just what in hell is going on here? Did I miss some special announcement that today is the start of “International Bullshit Week”? First, the editors at the NY TIMES start spewing raving lunacy (see post below this one) and now the Arabs are piling on, demanding we announce a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.
Who do these pencil-dick, towel-heads think they are? We’ll leave when we get good and damn ready, got that? And we’re not abut to broadcast our future plans to anyone in the Muddled East. While we’re at it, don’t bother to bring the useless United Nations into this mix. They left Iraq four years ago after the first little bomb hit their offices there.
Arabs Want U.N. Timetable For U.S. Withdrawal
CAIRO (Reuters) - March 4, 2007
The Arab League said on Sunday the United Nations Security Council should set a timetable for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa listed what the Cairo-based organization believed were the key issues for easing the crisis in Iraq.
Apart from setting a timetable for U.S.-led coalition to leave, the list also includes a call for the fair distribution of wealth and the disbanding of all militias, which are demands that Arab leaders have repeated many times.
“I suggest that these foundations be included in a binding
U.N. Security Council resolution that all Iraqi and other parties with present roles in Iraq should respect and follow,” Moussa said in a speech to a meeting of Arab foreign ministers.
The United States has rejected calls for setting a date for its troops, who make up the vast majority of multinational forces, to leave the country they invaded in 2003.
Arab governments have little influence in Baghdad. The Arab League representative in Iraq resigned in January because of his frustration over the situation in the country.

Egypt Sits This One Out
When your team plays their team four times and your record is 0-4, you might want to consider playing in a less difficult league. Egypt has apparently decided to move down to Division III for this season, according to Coach Mubarak. Somebody grab that beer man. There’s a game in progress in Lebanon ....
Egypt Won’t Go To War With Israel
(JERUSALEM POST) - July 26, 2006 11:39
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak declared Wednesday at a press conference that his country did not plan on going to war with Israel, regardless of the latest conflict with Lebanon.
“The Military of Egypt’s purpose is solely to protect the country, and does not have any other objective,” said Mubarak after pressures on his government to intervene

Worshiping Evil

“Adolf Hitler was not an ordinary man to be [forgotten] by the wheels of time… Adolf Hitler does not belong to the German people alone, he is one of the few great men who almost stopped the motion of history, altered its course, and changed the face of the world. Hence, he belongs to history.”

The Time Traveler
I saw this link on Misha’s site and followed it. Wow.
Here’s a taste:
The Time Traveler appeared suddenly in my study on New Year’s Eve, 2004. He was a stolid, grizzled man in a gray tunic and looked to be in his late-sixties or older. He also appeared to be the veteran of wars or of some terrible accident since he had livid scars on his face and neck and hands, some even visible in his scalp beneath a fuzz of gray hair cropped short in a military cut. One eye was covered by a black eyepatch. Before I could finish dialing 911 he announced in a husky voice that he was a Time Traveler come back to talk to me about the future.
If you read nothing else today but this, you will have read enough.

If You Can’t Beat Us, Buy Us
Let’s examine this cycle of money flow described below. We buy gas in America from the Arabs at nearly $70 per barrel. Our money goes to them. They spend a third of the money stirring up trouble for us, a third on luxurious palaces for the rulers while their population starves and the final third is used on a huge shopping spree as they come over here and buy us up.
Somehow, I don’t think this is the kind of economy that Adam Smith dreamed of. I’m quite sure Alexander Hamilton would not find it amusing either. So what are we going to do? Nothing. What can we do? Nothing. Auto manufacturers keep selling us cars that get 10 miles per gallon, we’ve already destroyed the countries once-massive rail system, the enviro-whackos and caribou-huggers won’t let us drill in Alaska or off Florida’s coast, hydrogen is too expensive - there’s not a thing we can do, is there?
Wait! I have an idea! Let’s sell the Arabs California, Washington (state), Massachusetts and New York - in exchange for 200 years of free oil. This is ingenious. The rational people in the US get all the gas we want and the idjit Liberals in the blue states get to be ruled by homophobic, female-oppressing, drug-and-alcohol-hating ... madmen with swords. Dang! I love it when a plan comes together ....
Mideast Investment Up in U.S.
Tuesday, March 7, 2006
(WASHINGTON POST)
Middle Eastern investment in the United States is once again picking up steam, showing big gains since the tense period following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. And while some takeovers are triggering alarm—most famously, the purchase by a Dubai-owned company of a seaports management firm—others are evoking warm welcomes.
Spearheading the trend is Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktum (popularly known as “Sheik Mo"), ruler of the freewheeling city-state, which is part of the United Arab Emirates. The ports deal is just one of a series of recent purchases by companies he controls.
Other acquisitions include a $1 billion portfolio of 21,000 apartments in U.S. Sun Belt cities; a 2.2 percent stake in the automotive giant DaimlerChrysler AG that cost another $1 billion; and a Manhattan landmark building, 230 Park Ave. The emirate also made major purchases in other countries over the past year, notably a $1.5 billion takeover of Britain’s Tussauds Group, which owns the famous waxworks, along with theme parks, roller coasters and other entertainment-oriented businesses.
Already, the list of U.S. businesses owned by Arab investors—not just from Dubai—includes some well-known names. Among them are Caribou Coffee Co., the fast-growing rival to Starbucks Corp.; Church’s Chicken, a fast-food concern; Loehmann’s, a specialty retailer; TLC Health Care Services Inc., a provider of home nursing and hospice care; and even several financial publications, including the American Banker.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
