Camden Capitalists Captured

Camden NJ: Drive-Through Drug Ring Busted

Hey, you want weed with that?

A lot of people have a completely wrong impression about New Jsersey. Aside from a few horrible little cities and an improved-but-still-stinky refinery, most of the state is pretty nice. Camden NJ, right on the Delaware River across from Philadelphia, belies that wrong impression. It is a small Hell on earth, a 3 square mile bankrupt, rotting, crime-ridden cesspool as bad as Detroit, Baltimore, East Saint Louis, or any other post-industrial city after generations of White Flight. Yet even there there are several great museums and a nice concert hall. Just drive there directly on the highways, park your car in the lots behind the barbed wire fences and the armed guards, and do not get lost. And you’ll be fine. Probably. Mostly. Hey, it’s adventure, the Jersey way.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman likened the drug operation in Camden’s Morgan Village section that resulted in the arrests of seven people Tuesday to a “drive-through restaurant.”

“You call ahead, you could order something. You could walk up or you could drive off the highway, pick up stuff, drive around the block and get right back on the highway,” he said in an interview Tuesday about the drug set, easily accessible from Interstates 676 and 76.

He added: “Like a restaurant, they had a pretty broad menu. They had heroin, they had cocaine, they had crack.”

The suspects themselves likened their alleged operation to professional sports teams: They coded drugs by the uniform colors of various teams, authorities said.

Crack cocaine, for example, was packaged in blue-colored bags and referred to as “Giants.” Powder cocaine was sold in clear bags and referred to as “White Sox,” authorities said. Heroin sold in red bags was “Redskins,” and “Steelers” if sold in yellow bags.

Camden police Chief Scott Thomson said 2,000 bags of heroin, a pound of cocaine and $200,000 in cash were seized, along with 17 guns.

The suspects allegedly ran the drug trafficking organization around the clock, for at least a year in the area of Eighth and Tulip streets, in a city with more than 170 open-air drug sets, Fishman’s office announced. They face drug possession and distribution charges.

Agents with the FBI, State Police, and detectives and investigators with the Camden City Police and Camden County Prosecutor’s Office arrested seven people; an eighth suspect is at large.

The investigation started in January 2012 and included wire taps and surveillance.

The network also operated from a retail shopping plaza in the 700 block of Morgan Boulevard and areas within the Crestbury Apartment public housing project in the 2500 block of South Eighth Street, authorities said.

Carl Wiles, 23, of Oaklyn, also known as “Call Call,” was the alleged leader. Keith Jackson, 30, of Camden, served as the supplier, and Fuquan Pulliam, 23, of Pennsauken and Khalil Mims, 22, of Camden, served as managers.

Camden residents, Justin Gould, 24, Marqueis Thomas-Randall, 21, and William Gideon, 19, functioned as workers, authorities said.

Camden resident Elquinzie Lewis, 21, also a worker, is at large.

Authorities touted the arrests as evidence of the close collaboration between the prosecutor’s office, Camden City Police, and federal agencies like the FBI, DEA, and IRS to tackle drug trafficking, gang activity, and violent crime in Camden.

The initiative, which started in 2010, operates out of high-security premises near the Camden waterfront shared with L-3 Communications, a defense firm.

Camden is so broke they barely have a police department. Most of the guys have been laid off. Gangs run the city; all the government seems to do is hand out EBTs to the masses. Funny thing though: “170 open air drug sets” in Camden. Which means known operations dealing drugs out on the streets, not even trying to be subtle about it. Somebody in government got paid to go around and count them all. Yet it took more than 15 months to bust this operation, and the cops managed to arrest all of 7 guys. I’m just guessing, but there are probably at least 50 people involved in a business this big. I guess they went for the big fish instead of the minnows, and that’s why this is a big story. Still, a drive-through drug dealership with phone orders for take-out. Makes me wonder if they had a web site and sold franchises. Capitalism in action.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
