Blame the cultures, not the tools

Gun control does not control violence. Culture controls violence.

Found this over at Kim’s today. As so often happens in the blogosphere, he writes about an article that writes about a published study. The study is here and the article is here.

Kim sees that the study shows that murderers will murder even if they don’t have access to guns. The author of the article comes away with the view that an armed populace is a safer one:

By now, any informed American is familiar with Dr. John R. Lott, Jr.’s famous axiom of “More Guns, Less Crime.” In other words, American jurisdictions that allow law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms are far safer and more crime-free than jurisdictions that enact stringent “gun control” laws.

Very simply, the ability of law-abiding citizens to possess firearms has helped reduce violent crime in America.

I think that the study, done by the very august Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, shows more than either of these viewpoints. I read the thing, all 46 wide margined, well cited pages. It is a study of murder and suicide rates from many countries around the world, correlated to gun ownership (and sometimes handgun ownership) in those countries. What I got out of it is that you can have what computer geeks call a tautology:

Put simply, you get a high or a low murder and/or suicide rate in your country because of what your country is. Not because the people have guns. Or don’t have guns. It is simply not a factor. At all.

The US is a big country, large enough so that we have quite a few subcultures within the uber-culture. Twenty months ago, Kevin over at Smallest Minority ran several posts that reacted to some anti-gun newspaper articles and analyzed some government statistics and found a very similar thing. He found that certain subcultures here are responsible for the greater amount of violence in our society. Amazingly, those are the same subcultures that have a permanent victimhood aura.

People without hope, people who feel held back and kept down, people who don’t value their own lives seem to have the highest likelihood of taking other people’s lives or their own. That’s the real moral of this never-ending story. And the solution isn’t for the governments to start force-feeding us Happy Pills.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
