blogger’s block

Tripoli is falling. The north east is washing away as flooded rivers cause havoc everywhere, especially in the unexpected places. Hurricane damage in Vermont? Oh please. But it’s true.

And I just can’t muster the gumption to write about it. Dunno why. Maybe I’m a bit under the weather. Maybe it’s the strange hours I’ve been keeping, trying to get my work in around this storm. Yesterday was a big screw up ... power was out, local roads closed all over the place due to being under water, etc. Today is a bit better, but I had to get up at 4am to go do the work I usually do on Sundays at 4pm. Messed up.

I’ve been at this for years now. I don’t think this is too big a bump in the road, but it’s a bump nonetheless.

If only Obama would do something truly stupid, I’d get incensed and write about it. I mean far stupider than usual. Not the regular day to day ineptness, or the endless rounds of golf, or the never ending vacations he and the family seem to go on. Is it possible that we’re running out of things for him to screw up? Oh I doubt that.

I did finish that spreadsheet I was working on. I reduced 26 tables each with 17 sections into two generic formulas. And then I made it pretty, and loaded it up with IF(ANDs and all kinds of data validation points. It felt ... almost like programming. Which I haven’t done in a decade. But it was nice to see that the brain cells were still there. So I turned a huge bunch of numbers into a very flexible tool. Neat, but of very niche use. Anybody know how to compile .xls files or turn them into Java apps? It would be a shame to have to rewrite the whole thing in actual code to stick it up online somewhere.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
