affair will sour relations between European leaders and the U.S. at every level .

Michele, American Heartland USA,
As an American that did NOT vote for the idiot in office, I can attest that there are more like-minded people opposed to this dictator than not. He wins elections because he hands out goods and services to these dead beat, good-for-nothings in return for a vote. A bunch of lazy, fat “Americans” that have sold their freedoms for free cell phones and medication. It truly disgusts me.

scooter, norwich, United Kingdom. It takes a stretch of the imagination, albeit from the outside looking in, as to just how America’s liberal-left quite comes to terms with Obama’s blatant and arguably illegal disregard of the 4th amendment ….

There’s even one guy who says the USA stole Brits atomic secrets in WW2. Well, if we did, weren’t we clever especially considering the moles and traitors working inside the govt. here.  Yeah, we had em too but not on the same scale I do not think. Anyway ... here.

Tim, Woodbridge,
I for one am not in the least bit surprised the the USA has been eavesdropping on everyone. What would have surprised me would have been if they weren’t, or at least trying to. They have got the technology available with satellites and so forth, haven’t they. TheYanks aren’t gentlemen. This was obvious from the moment at least when we gave them our nuclear secrets during WW2 which helped the building of the atom bomb, but they gave none of theirs In return, which had been the understanding.  There is no special relationship, at least as far as the Yanks are concerned, other than that of a master to a useful servant. Obama hates our guts. Not that Britain has clean hands of course.

So what’s this all about?

There’s a few more but it’s all about this article in a conservative paper. Mostly conservative. And the writer while on the money on lots of things, generally is put off by the USA.  I don’t think he much likes us.

Take a look.

Oh no, the U.S. has dropped us in it again

By Andrew Alexander

America should never be trusted. This is the lesson of the past half century or so. Washington has led us into one morass after another ever since the end of World War II.

The fact we play the stooge’s role doesn’t make it any better, rather worse in fact. Now it turns out that the U.S. has been systematically tapping the phones of its allies’ leaders - with GCHQ Cheltenham playing some inevitably subordinate, if useful, role.

The U.S. is guilty of a grave diplomatic insult. We do not believe what you tell us, says Washington, so we intercept your private conversations. (Why not go through the rubbish bins, too?)

It seems that literally dozens, including most if the European heads of government, have had their innermost thoughts revealed. The reaction in Washington is a mixture of naivety and humbug.

It has long been tapping the phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, for example. That would be an offence on German soil, the Berlin government angrily insists. And it probably was done with the use of the U.S. Embassy.

In the middle of this unprecedented row, the U.S. issues an arrest warrant for young Lauri Love, a vicar’s son from Suffolk, for hacking into their government departments’ messages.

The two operations - his and the American government’s - sound interestingly similar. And we already have the case of Gary McKinnon, who Washington tried, unsuccessfully thanks to a Mail campaign, to deport on a charge of hacking into their computers.

The attempt to excuse President Obama because he stopped the phone-tapping when he heard about it months ago won’t wash.

There is no point in gathering information about a foreign leader’s views unless you feed them to your own head of government. Of course he knew about the practice.

His hand was forced only because of the leaks from the documents revealed by Edward Snowden, the whistle-blowing contractor employed by the National Security Agency. This affair will sour relations between European leaders and the U.S. at every level for a long time to come.

Trust, the product of years of effort, is not easily rebuilt, perhaps not in our lifetime.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
