A Public Service Announcement

The headline intrigued me so I clicked on it.  You should also.

It’s about this 19 year old kid who, at 17, came up with Firefox, the browser that competes with MSIE.  I first heard about Firefox through Allan when I was having virus issues several months ago.

I’ve not looked back since.  It has several things going for it.  It’s free.  It’s easy of use and has tabbed browsing (open one window but within that window you can open multiple tabs to different sites or links.) I use this feature when I have several stories I want to post about but can’t, at that time, I read them.  I save the bookmark into a folder and later I can click on my “favorites” tab, find the folder, right click on it and open all the links in that folder as tabs in one browser window.  It keeps my task bar relatively clutter free especially when I have 10 or 15 sites open plus email, plus my blogger program, plus Word (to check my spelling) and Excel (to calculate how many people will criticize my grammar.)

Another VERY cool feature is the pop-up blocker integrated into it.  I might have one or two pop-ups that slip through....per month!

Lastly, it comes with an integrated Google bar built into the address bar.  Very convenient.

Anyway, I am sold.  Plus it is ALL FREE. (I said that already.)

Drawbacks?  Every once in a while you might run into a site whose contents can only be viewed in MSIE (a game site or two and Microsoft’s Money Central site.)

Go ahead, read about this kid.  Pretty smart guy.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
