Ivan The Terrible - Latest Update

Like lemmings, they are fleeing North from the Gulf Coast. I-65 is almost bumper-to-bumper traffic from Mobile to Birmingham. Traffic is so thick the State Of Alabama is considering closing the southbound lanes of I-65 and opening both sides of the interstate for northbound traffic from Mobile to MontgomeryUpdate: According to Alabama State Troopers, both sides of I-65 from Mobile to Montgomery will be northbound only, starting at 7am today. Southbound traffic is being re-routed to US Hwy 31. Here is a list of open shelters in the area.

Things shouldn’t get too bad here in Huntsville, although we’ll probably get strong winds (50-70 mph gusts expected) and heavy rain on Friday.

Unfortunately, Ivan is following all of the lemmings fleeing North .... (* cue up theme music from “Jaws” in background *) .... the hurricane track takes Ivan straight up I-65 to Birmingham and follows I-59 from there up to Chattanooga. Let’s hope this one loses strength pretty quickly after landfall.

More Bad News Update: Another tropical storm is moving over Puerto Rico at this moment. Hurricane Jeanne is coming.

-- Niels Bohr (1885 - 1962)

On This Day In History
September 15th

1950 - U.S. Forces Land At Inchon
During the Korean War, U.S. Marines land at Inchon on the west coast of Korea, 100 miles south of the 38th parallel and just 25 miles from Seoul. The location had been criticized as too risky, but U.N. Supreme Commander Douglas MacArthur insisted on carrying out the landing. By the early evening, the Marines had overcome moderate resistance and secured Inchon. The brilliant landing cut the North Korean forces in two, and the U.S.-led U.N. force pushed inland to recapture Seoul, the South Korean capital that had fallen to the communists in June. Allied forces then converged from the north and the south, devastating the North Korean army and taking 125,000 enemy troops prisoner.

1789 - The U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs changed its name to the Department of State.

1821 - Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador gained independence.

1862 - Confederates capture Harpers Ferry, Virginia

1916 - Tanks introduced into warfare at the Somme

1935 - The Nuremberg Laws deprived Jews of their citizenship and made the Swastika the official emblem of Nazi Germany.

1963 - A church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, killed four young black girls

CBS FORGERY ACTION REQUEST PETITION! SIGN IT!

Now is your turn to stand up America. If you want to do something about the “RatherGate” or “MemoGate” as it is called you have a chance to let your voice be heard.

I have created and posted online at PetitionsOnline.Com a petition. Click here to view the petition and add your signature if you agree.

Here is the full text of the petition ....

To:  US Attorney General John Ashcroft

We, the undersigned are concerned about the recent documents used by CBS News in its newscast on September 9, 2004 which purported to show that President Bush was guilty of dereliction of duty while in the National Guard in the early 1970’s. Our concern is not with the content of the documents but whether or not they are genuine. Several experts in handwriting and typesetting have examined copies of the documents and have directly and forcefully questioned their validity. CBS News has reportedly conducted its own internal investigation and CBS News anchor Dan Rather has repeatedly denied that the documents are forged. CBS News executives and Mr. Rather have also refused to reveal any information regarding the source of the documents or how they were obtained. We believe that if the documents are forgeries, then a crime has been committed against the American people and the felony of intentional fraud should be punished. Furthermore, we believe that CBS News’ refusal to reveal the source of the documents and how they were obtained places the veracity of the documents in grave doubt.

Therefore we, the undersigned call upon US Attorney General John Ashcroft to either (a) order the FBI to investigate the documents and determine their veracity or (b) appoint an independent investigator to perform the same task. We ask Attorney General Ashcroft to subpoena any individual at CBS who has knowledge of these documents and to take sworn testimony before a Federal Grand Jury to determine the extent of this possible fraudulent attempt to influence the American election. If the documents are found to be forgeries by an investigation, we ask the Attorney General to prosecute the individuals responsible to the fullest extent mandated by law.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Secret Message To Benevolent Dictator

Vilmar,

Put down the grandbaby and get your ass on an airplane. If you wait much longer you won’t be able to fly back to Florida until the weekend. You see, there’s this big rain cloud moving up the Gulf and it really blows (if you know what I mean). By my reckoning, it will directly straddle your return path from Wednesday through Friday.

Besides, in the last week you’ve already missed “RatherGate” and lots of other very exciting goings-on around here. There’s even more excitement coming up in a few days. Take a look at the visitors counter in the right sidebar. We’re about to go over 100,000 visitors. At the current rate, this should occur on Friday or Saturday so get your ass back here so we can celebrate. I think we need to have a party. A REPUBLICAN Party!

So come out of hiding, Vilmar. Before I hire OldCatMan to replace you.

big surprise

Ivan The Terrible - Update

Hurricane Ivan is entering the Gulf Of Mexico at this moment. This one is a killer, folks. I know because I experienced Ivan’s older sister back in 1969. Her name was Camille and she followed almost the exact same track, with the same killer 160 mpg winds, aiming for Mobile, AL where I was living at the time. I remember the devastation and total destruction. It was almost like a nuclear war hit us. My advice to everyone living in that area is .... run away as fast as you can. This one is going to hurt. Real bad. If you live between Gulfport, MS and Pensacola, FL please take I-65 North or I-10 West and get moving. By Wednesday night it will be too late.

A HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO
COAST FROM MORGAN CITY LOUISIANA EASTWARD TO ST. MARKS FLORIDA…
INCLUDING GREATER NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA.

AT 5 AM EDT...0900Z...THE EYE OF HURRICANE IVAN WAS LOCATED BY A
RECONNAISSANCE PLANE NEAR LATITUDE 22.6 NORTH...LONGITUDE 86.0
WEST OR ABOUT 85 MILES...135 KM...NORTHWEST OF THE WESTERN TIP OF
CUBA AND 575 MILES… 925 KM… SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF THE NORTHERN
GULF OF MEXICO COAST.

IVAN IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 9 MPH...15 KM/HR. A GRADUAL
TURN TO THE NORTH-NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 160 MPH...260 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS.  IVAN REMAINS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE ON
THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE.  SOME SLIGHT WEAKENING IS
ANTICIPATED DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 100 MILES...160 KM…
FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP
TO 200 MILES...325 KM.

Speak English, Dammit!

This story may have slipped underneath your radar like it did mine and if Vilmar were here he’d be all over this like white on rice. I wasn’t aware of it but back in the Clinton administration, a law was passed (Executive Order 13166) that requires doctors to provide translators for patients who don’t speak English. Think about that for a minute. Doctors must pay for translators to help them talk to patients who don’t speak English. That is an outrage, people. This is just one more thing driving up the cost of medical care in this country. Do you have any idea how many different languages there are in the world .... and all of these people coming to America from all over the world are too damned lazy to learn English?

Well, several medical groups have sued the Department of Health & Human Services to have the law overturned. I support the doctors 100%. They should not have to provide translation services for people. That is a violation of their civil rights and an intrusion into their business by the nanny-state that our government has become.

For hundreds of years people have been coming to this country speaking hundreds of languages. They all learned English as their primary language because this nation needs a common language to allow us to communicate on a regular basis. Any attempt to build a multi-lingual country here is bound to fail because of the immense number of diverse ethnic backgrounds we all came from. I firmly believe that fluency in English should be a requirement for American citizenship. If you can’t speak English so that we all can talk to each other then you need to go back where you came from.

I don’t care if you have a horrible accent, as long as you can understand me and I can understand you. We can’t do that if we’re speaking different languages. It’s time to make English the official national language and be done with this problem before it gets much worse. If you want to speak Spanish, Chinese, French, Russian, German, Indian, Pakistani, Farsi or whatever in your home or within your social group, that’s fine but when it comes to communicating with the rest of America .. SPEAK ENGLISH, OK?

For more information about making English the official language go visit ProEnglish.Org.

Quote Of The Day

“Communism doesn’t work because people like to own stuff.”
-- Frank Zappa (1940 - 1993)

On This Day In History
September 14th

1812 - Napolean Captures Moscow
One week after winning a bloody victory over the Russian army at the Battle of Borodino, Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grande Armýe enters the city of Moscow, only to find the population evacuated and the Russian army retreated again. Moscow was the goal of the invasion, but the deserted city held no czarist officials to sue for peace and no great stores of food or supplies to reward the French soldiers for their long march. Then, just after midnight, fires broke out across the city, apparently set by Russian patriots, leaving Napoleon’s massive army with no means to survive the coming Russian winter.

1814 - Francis Scott Key Composes The Star Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key composes the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner” after witnessing the massive British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812. Key, an American lawyer, watched the siege while under detainment on a British ship and penned the famous words after observing that the U.S. flag over Fort McHenry had survived the 1,800-bomb assault. After circulating as a handbill, the patriotic lyrics were published in a Baltimore newspaper on September 20. Set to the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” an English drinking song written by the British composer John Stafford Smith, it soon became popular throughout the nation. Throughout the 19th century, “The Star-Spangled Banner” was regarded as the national anthem by the U.S. armed forces and other groups, but it was not until 1916, and the signing of an executive order by President Woodrow Wilson, that it was formally designated as such. In 1931, President Herbert Hoover signed a Congressional act confirming Wilson’s presidential order.

1901 - President McKinley died of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him.
1927 - Modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan died in Nice, France.
1940 - Congress passed the Selective Service Act, providing for the first peacetime draft in U.S. history.
1959 - The Soviet space probe Luna 2 became the first man-made object to reach the Moon when it crashed onto the lunar surface.
1982 - Princess Grace of Monaco died from injuries sustained in a car crash the previous day.
1994 - Acting commissioner Bud Selig announced the cancellation of the 1994 baseball season on the 34th day of a strike by players.

What will we do now? Somewhere Dan Rather is smiling ....

Zell Miller Fires Back

The following is from the Wall Street Journal. Give ‘em hell, Zell!I nominate Zell for President in 2008. Or how about Rudy Giuliani for President and Zell for Vice President. Yep, that oughta throw a monkey wrench into Queen Shrillary’s plans. Now, if we can just find a nice quiet “rest home” for Al Gore, a snooty restaurant in Paris for John Kerry to run and a whorehouse in Nevada for Bill Clinton to manage, everyone will be happy. Whaddya say?

Telling It Like It Is
I will never trust John Kerry with my family’s safety

BY ZELL MILLER
Monday, September 13, 2004 12:01 a.m. EDT

My critics in the national media are working overtime trying to paint me as an angry nut who got the facts all wrong in my speech to the Republican National Convention. Since there’s not enough time to challenge all of these critics to a duel, let me set the record straight here and now.

First, the anger. A lot has been said about my angry demeanor. I’ve made enough speeches to know that you’re supposed to connect with the audience by telling a joke or a humorous anecdote or some amusing tale. It’s a tried-and-true formula that I’ve used for most of my life. But this was not a normal speech in a normal time.

Today, we are at the most serious moment of history that we may ever know, and I wanted to connect with the seriousness of this moment, not the audience.

Now, about those facts. I charged that John Kerry is weak on national security, and I listed some of the many weapons systems he has opposed over the years. My critics tripped over themselves to point out that Dick Cheney opposed some of the same weapons systems when he was defense secretary.

But, like with so many things in life, timing is everything. Mr. Kerry was proposing the cancellation of many of these weapons systems at the height of the Cold War--the worst possible time to weaken our military strength. It would be comparable to a senator in 1943 proposing to scrap the B-29 Bomber or Sherman tank or Higgins landing craft. By contrast, Mr. Cheney waited until after we had won the Cold War to propose modernizing our forces and replacing older weapons systems. There’s a huge difference. Whether it’s the Cold War of yesterday or the war on terror today, Mr. Kerry has sought time and time again to weaken our military at the exact moment we need to show our strength.

I also charged that John Kerry and his fellow Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator, and that nothing makes this old Marine madder. My critics pounced on that one, too. Aren’t you aware, they sneered, that President Bush has used the term “occupiers”?

Do they mean when the president said this in April?--"As a proud and independent people, Iraqis do not support an indefinite occupation--and neither does America. We’re not an imperial power, as nations such as Japan and Germany can attest. We are a liberating power.” Are the people of Iraq not liberated from a terrible dictator? Did we not transfer sovereignty over to the Iraqi people exactly when we said we would?

John Kerry and his crowd derisively call American troops “occupiers” because it fits with their warped belief that America is the problem, not the solution. While more than 50 million people in Afghanistan and Iraq are enjoying freedom, Mr. Kerry is still fretting over whether the U.N. crowd likes us or not. The American people will not abide a commander in chief who gets squeamish over America’s role as a liberating force in the world.

And my critics love to point out that I had nice things to say about John Kerry when I introduced him to a Georgia Democratic dinner in 2001. That’s true and I meant it. But, again, timing is everything. I made that introduction in March 2001--six months before terrorists attacked this country on Sept. 11. As I have said time and again, 9/11 changed everything. Everything, that is, except the national Democrats’ shameful, manic obsession with bringing down a commander in chief. John Kerry has been wrong many times, but he’s never been more wrong than in his failure to support our troops and our commander in chief in this war on terror.

So, my critics can call me a psychopath and fire spitballs at me and froth at the mouth when an ex-president sends me a nasty letter. That’s the freedom of speech they all enjoy, courtesy of the American soldier.

But for David Gergen and this newspaper’s Al Hunt, among others, to call me a racist was especially hurtful. For they know better. They know I worked for three governors in a row, not just one: Carl Sanders, Lester Maddox and Jimmy Carter. They knew I was the first governor to try to remove the Confederate emblem from the Georgia flag. And by the way, when I called each of Georgia’s former governors to tell them what I was about to attempt, Jimmy Carter’s first question to me was, “What are you doing that for?” Mr. Gergen and Mr. Hunt also know I appointed the only African-American attorney general in the country in the 1990s and more African Americans to the state judiciary than all the other governors of Georgia combined, including that one from Plains.

So, they can call me names and ridicule my angry demeanor all day long. But facts are facts. And the fact is, John Kerry has a long record of proposals to weaken our national security in a time of war. And I would never put my family’s safety in those hands.

Mr. Miller is a Democratic senator from Georgia.

MISSING PERSON ALERT

Hmmmmmm. I haven’t heard from our Benevolent Dictator in nearly a week now. I’m starting to wonder if the Commies or the Democrats (what’s the difference, eh?) have somehow managed to take him out. Could he be way out west bouncing his little grand-daughter on his knee making noises like “goo-goo-gah-gah .... yessss, you is such a shweet widdle girrul”. Has our madman fallen pray to his “kinder, gentler” side? is he experiencing an “Alan Alda Tender Sensitive Moment”?

Even scarier, will we soon be subjected to that all too common horror that only grandparents can induce when they say “let me show you pictures of my grandchildren”.

GAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

If anyone has knowledge of Vilmar’s whereabouts please contact the BMEWS Missing Persons Bureau at 1-800-IAM-LOST. I’m gonna go see if I can get his picture put on all the milk cartons in the grocery stores. No, wait. Scratch that. It might cause the milk to go sour. Oh, well ....

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?

DID HE TOUCH YOU?

IF SO, GET A RABIES SHOT IMMEDIATELY?

Expiration Date Today

The federal ban on “assault weapons” expires today. After ten years of one of the most ridiculous laws imposed by the Clinton administration, Americans are free to purchase the same guns that criminals are using to assault us every day. The law has had little or no effect in reality and was intended only to provide a sop for the anti-gun groups that Clinton was courting for their votes. Thank God the evil that politicians do does not live forever after they are gone.

And remember, a gun is just a tool. Like any other, it is just as good or bad as the person wielding it, no more no less. Practice firearms safety at all times .... and keep your powder dry. The anti-gun groups will not let this go uncontested, I promise you. They will not be happy until only the criminals have guns and the rest of us are left to defend ourselves with spitballs.

And when all the guns are rounded up who will keep the government from getting out of hand? Hmmmmmm ....?

Join the NRA today and learn what you can do to help prevent the politicians from taking away your Second Amendment rights. Just click the logo below ....

Gorezilla Attacks (Again)

image

Al Gore just won’t go away. Between Gore and Bill Clinton this is starting to sound like “Return Of The Living Brain-Dead”. Neither one seems to want to leave us alone. Gore can’t let the 2000 election go and will probably go to his grave claiming to be President.

Congress needs to pass a law proclaiming a statute of limitations on whining. You have ninety days after an election to bitch, moan and whine and then you have to just shut the f**k up.

Gore is like the Energizer Bunny though, except this rabbit is rabid, foaming at the mouth and probably on drugs to boot.

In recent weeks and months, as an uncensored voice for the Democratic cause, Gore has skewered President Bush’s team for moral cowardice, the “lowest sort of politics imaginable,” aligning itself with “digital brownshirts” who intimidate the press, and political tactics as craven as those of Richard Nixon. Just to cite a few examples.

There you go again, Mr. Gore. It seems you can’t get beyond the politics of hate and name-calling.Have you no decency, man? No self-respect? C’mon, get a life, OK? The rest of us need a rest from your drug-induced hatred.

GOP strategist Keith Appell likens him to “some kind of cheerleader on acid.”

“Some of the things he has said have been outrageous and he says them in this high-pitched scream,” Appell said. “I really don’t know what to call that.”

“Cheerleader on acid?” Yep, that about sums it up. Except this cheerleader ain’t pretty and keeps repeating the same tired cheers over and over and over again. I would call it, delusions of grandeur compounded with paranoia and schizophrenia. And this man was almost President? I’d say we were pretty damned lucky he didn’t succeed in 2000.

“Gore will be a tremendous asset to us in a number of targeted battleground states and we’re happy to have his help,” said David Morehouse, a senior Kerry adviser. As for Gore’s more outspoken criticisms, Morehouse adds, “He’s a former vice president who’s entitled to say what he believes.”

Yep, he’s entitled to say what he believes, I guess. The Kerry campaign believes anyone is entitled to say what they wish as long as it follows the party line. However, let some group like the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth speak up and they file lawsuits, threaten book publishers and just generally let loose the censorship hounds.

“He was shackled with the trappings of the office of vice president in 2000 and it’s a shame, because I think it certainly held him back,” says Warren Gooch, a lawyer and party fund-raiser in Gore’s home state of Tennessee. “If he had been a little more forceful, a little more open and perhaps a little less cautious in 2000, it could possibly have made a difference.”

Now, Mr. Gooch is right on the money there. If Gore had behaved like this in 2000, the election would have been quite different indeed. Bush would have won in a landslide and there would have been no need for the Florida fiasco. The American people are smart enough to know madness when they see (and hear) it. At least those who haven’t been indoctrinated in the Democratic Party’s socialist agenda. Sooner or later, Al Gore will fade away, just like any other disease. We just need to continue taking our medicine for four more years.

Quote Of The Day

“It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Internet has evolved into a force strong enough to reflect the greatest hopes and fears of those who use it. After all, it was designed to withstand nuclear war, not just the puny huffs and puffs of politicians and religious fanatics.”
-- Denise Caruso

On This Day In History

September 13, 1940 - Italy Invades Egypt
On this day in 1940, Mussolini’s forces finally cross the Libyan border into Egypt, achieving what the Duce calls the “glory” Italy had sought for three centuries. Italy had occupied Libya since 1912, a purely economic “expansion.” In 1935, Mussolini began sending tens of thousands of Italians to Libya, mostly farmers and other rural workers, in part to relieve overpopulation concerns. So by the time of the outbreak of the Second World War, Italy had enjoyed a long-term presence in North Africa, and Mussolini began dreaming of expanding that presence-always with an eye toward the same territories the old “Roman Empire” had counted among its conquests. Chief among these was Egypt.

But sitting in Egypt were British troops, which, under a 1936 treaty, were garrisoned there to protect the Suez Canal and Royal Navy bases at Alexandria and Port Said. Hitler had offered to aid Mussolini in his invasion, to send German troops to help fend off a British counterattack. But Mussolini had been rebuffed when he had offered Italian assistance during the Battle of Britain, so he now insisted that as a matter of national pride, Italy would have to create a Mediterranean sphere of influence on its own-or risk becoming a “junior” partner of Germany’s.

As the Blitz commenced, and the land invasion of Britain by Germany was “imminent” (or so the Duce thought), Mussolini believed the British troops in Egypt were particularly vulnerable, and so announced to his generals his plans to make his move into Egypt. Gen. Rodolfo Graziani, the brutal governor of Ethiopia, another Italian colony, disagreed, believing that Italy’s Libya forces were not strong enough to wage an offensive across the desert. Graziani also reminded Mussolini that Italian claims of air superiority in the Mediterranean were nothing more than propaganda. But Mussolini, a true dictator, ignored these protestations and ordered Graziani into Egypt-a decision that would disprove the adage that war is too important to leave to the generals.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
