9/12 March on DC

9/12 Tea Party: TWO MILLION March on DC

“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it anymore!”

“minuscule fringe” my ass!

UPDATE: Yes, it was 2 million!
I did not realize that the tea party was also on the National Mall, as well as Pennsylvania Avenue. National Park Service estimates that the Mall can hold about 1 million people comfortably spaced, and the grounds in front of the Capital another quarter million. (the picture shown at the NPS link is upside down. North is down in that pic) Densely packed, the Mall will hold 1.5 million; the numbers for the Capital grounds will rise also. Now add in the 300,000 folks over on Pennsylvania Avenue, and you’re at 2 million. Those two zones are only a couple of blocks apart, so the crowd spillover from both were probably connected on the side streets. How many more folks would that add to the mix? It just might be that (pun intended) 2 million was a Conservative estimate!

Michelle Malkin has more, of course.

Whaddya mean, Obama’s not home? He’s in Minnesota? But we told him we were coming today!

Funny ... Fox News is calling the crowd size “tens of thousands” both on their web site and online. So is ABC news online. But on TV, ABC reporters are saying the crowd is TWO MILLION strong. Look at the picture ... that’s a lot more than “tens of thousands”. Tens of tens, maybe tens of tens of tens.

Screen capture from NBC news. See that round rotunda thing on the brown roof in the foreground? That’s the Ronald Reagan building, more than a full mile from the Capitol Building at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. The tower is on the Old Post Office Pavilion, 250 yards down the road. And Pennsylvania Avenue is at least 8 lanes wide, plus the sidewalks. That’s about 120 feet wide overall. And it’s solid people. This isn’t tens of thousands. It’s millions.

The camera is on the Willard Intercontinental Hotel, above Freedom plaza, just one block east from the Treasury Building, and two blocks east of the White House. It’s likely that the crowd stretches right up to the White House gates.

From Michelle Malkin’s:

12:34pm Eastern: Police estimate 1.2 million in attendance. ABC News reporting crowd at 2 million. Teeny, tiny fringe, huh?

Tens of thousands of protesters fed up with government spending marched to the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, showing their disdain for the president’s health care plan with slogans such as “Obamacare makes me sick” and “I’m not your ATM.”

The line of protesters clogged several blocks near capitol, according to the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. Demonstrators chanted “enough, enough” and “We the People.” Others yelled “You lie, you lie!” and “Pelosi has to go,” referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Throngs of people waved U.S. flags and held signs reading “Go Green Recycle Congress” and “I’m Not Your ATM.” Men wore colonial costumes as they listened to speakers who warned of “judgment day” — Election Day 2010.

Terri Hall, 45, of Starke, Fla., said she felt compelled to become political for the first time this year because she was upset by government spending.

“Our government has lost sight of the powers they were granted,” she said. She added that the deficit spending was out of control, and said she thought it was putting the country at risk.

Conservative activists from around the country are gathering in Washington on Saturday, hoping to continue their momentum in shaping the national debate on everything from health care to White House staffing.

The demonstrators, who plan to march up Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol, are drawing their passion not from Bush-era fights over terrorism or gay marriage, but rather from Reagan-era debates over big government programs. The event comes on the heels of antitax events, dubbed tea parties, in April, and a series of congressional town-hall meetings nationwide last month that elicited angry criticism of health-care proposals favored by President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies.

“I can’t figure out to save me what [Mr. Obama and the Democrats] are trying to accomplish, unless they want socialism,” 73-year-old Joseph Wright, a retired paper-mill worker, told The Wall Street Journal. Wright rode from Tallahassee, Fla., to Washington this week on one of the many chartered buses bringing in demonstrators from states as far-flung as Massachusetts and Arkansas.

Saturday’s rally comes just a few months after Mr. Obama’s victory seemed to have left the conservative movement in disarray. But in recent weeks, critics of the administration’s programs and spending have succeeded in putting Mr. Obama on the defensive, threatening his health-care drive, prompting parents to boycott a routine presidential speech to schoolchildren and forcing the resignation of a White House adviser with a left-leaning past.

Way to go America. And let your representatives know that this is just the tip of the iceberg. This is merely the 0.67% of the population who was riled up enough to go, and was able to get there. For every protester, 50 more stayed home.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
