What Pat Said, But Worse

Pat Buchanan: Trump’s Decision Point Is All That Matters

Upon this question now, the Trump presidency appears to hang:

Will Trump’s actions flatten the curve and put the pandemic on an irreversible downward course in daily cases and deaths, as he produces a U-turn, if not a V-turn, dramatically driving the economy upward from depression and toward national prosperity?

Can he revive the economy without reviving the virus?  Or will the coronavirus so severely cripple the economy that the depression it produces will kill the Trump presidency?

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie framed the issue thus: “Politically, nothing else matters. … I have never seen a time when an opponent is more irrelevant. And that’s not an insult to Vice President Biden.

“But in the end, the American people are going to decide, has the president of the United States stood up to this crisis, and done right by them and protected their lives and their property, or hasn’t he?”

Trump’s true adversary in this election is not Joe Biden, the hermit candidate sheltering in place. Biden is but a name on the November ballot you mark if you want to remove and replace Donald Trump.

Trump’s real antagonists are the media who detest him and are determined, having failed to impeach and remove him, to drive him from office by portraying him as a foolish, failed president in the worst crisis to hit the country since Pearl Harbor.

The crucial decision Trump will make is to choose the exact moment to reopen the country and the economy, without igniting a new spike in the pandemic that induces despair and causes a panic.

The president’s aides in charge of the medical crisis want the longest delay possible. His economic and political advisers, fearing Trump could be forced to run as Herbert Hoover did, at the nadir of a new depression, want an earlier decision to start opening up the country.

Action cannot long be delayed if we are to survive the medical crisis only to endure a longer and more costly economic crisis.

Thursday morning, jobless claims revealed that another 6.6 million Americans had lost their jobs, bringing to 16.7 million the number who have filed for unemployment in just three weeks.

One in 10 Americans is now out of work.

Six weeks ago, Trump was boasting, and justifiably so, of having the greatest economy of any president in recent memory. Now, the possibility exists that he could go into the fall election with the worst economy since Hoover and the Great Depression of 1932.

Trump’s decision, which will determine the fate of his presidency, is likely close at hand.

And this is why the CDC is directing coroners to fudge the death stats to make the COVID numbers higher. That’s extra ammo to the “Trump didn’t protect us” mantra.

And while I don’t deny Buchanan’s numbers, he is leaving out a significant skewing factor: an awful lot of people work in government. And NOT ONE of them has been fired, laid off, furloughed, or reduced to minimal hours. Not one. This extends all the way down to the guys who mow the grass in the town parks you aren’t allowed to use right now. From the federal government to the state government to the county government to the town government to the hamlet leadership to the managers of the HOAs and condo parks. As a very rough guess, I’ll say that’s 20% of the overall workforce, 2 in 10, and I’m probably very low. So if we have 10% unemployment, that means actual unemployment for everyone else is 12.5%. And if we hit 20% by Pat’s overall standard, that’s 25% for everybody else.

Pray for our President.

Jumpin Jack Flash, It’s A Gas

Nitric Oxide Showing Promise As COVID-19 Treatment

Nitric oxide, not nitrous oxide (laughing gas). It helps relax the lungs so people can breath better. It’s been used to help premature “blue babies” to get their lungs working. Like so many other treatments being tested, it also has anti-viral properties. Every cell in your body makes it, but breathing some a couple times a day might really help, both as a cure and as a preventative.

Boston Massachussets:

A drug known to relax blood vessels could help coronavirus patients with severely damaged lungs and will be tested at Massachusetts General Hospital

The Boston hospital will be the first in the nation to rigorously test nitric oxide in coronavirus patients.

“It’s a pretty remarkable drug,” said Dr. Lorenzo Berra, the critical-care specialist at Massachusetts General who is overseeing the new, international trial. “It has a risk profile that is minimal.”

The study administers inhaled nitric oxide to patients with mild to moderate cases of the coronavirus. The gas is delivered through a CPAP breathing machine for 20-30 minutes twice a day.

“We have tremendous confidence this therapy will alter the devastating effects of COVID-19 but we must test it. If results show promise, and since this gas is already FDA-approved, widespread use could begin immediately,” said Dr. Keith Scott, principal investigator of the Louisiana component of the trial.

The trial will also test if the treatment could cut down on the number of patients who need a ventilator to breathe, as they are currently in short supply across the nation.

A proposed second trial that is being reviewed would enroll health care workers who are routinely exposed to coronavirus patients. Under that potential study, staff would inhale a high dose of the drug for 10 to 15 minutes at the start and end of every shift.

Birmingham Alabama:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has been selected to begin enrolling patients in an international study assessing the use of inhaled nitric oxide to improve outcomes for COVID-19 patients with severely damaged lungs.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome, a severe form of lung failure, is the leading cause of death in COVID-19. Nitric oxide has been used for the treatment of failing lungs, but it was also found to have antiviral properties against coronaviruses, according to UAB officials.

The antiviral effect of nitric oxide was tested and demonstrated during the 2002-2003 SARS pandemic, which was caused by a similar coronavirus called the SARS-CoV virus.

“This trial will allow the sickest COVID-19 patients at UAB access to a rescue therapy that may have antiviral benefits in addition to improving the status of lungs,” said Dr. Vibhu Parcha, a research fellow with UAB’s Division of Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Pankaj Arora, assistant professor in the division, is spearheading UAB’s efforts in providing this treatment option to eligible COVID-19 patients.

“In humans, nitric oxide is generated within the blood vessels and regulates blood pressure, and prevents formation of clots and also destroys potential toxins,” Arora said.

Shreveport, Louisiana:

Critical care and emergency medicine faculty at the LSU Health Shreveport Department of Medicine join the Department of Anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) as being among the first centers in the U.S. to enroll patients in an international study testing using inhaled nitric oxide to improve outcomes for COVID-19 patients with severely damaged lungs; using gas to effectively “kill” corona virus in the lungs and improve delivery of oxygen to injured tissues.

“Inhaled nitric oxide had previously been suggested to decrease original SARS-CoV infectivity over a decade ago, but its effect on SARS-CoV2 [ aka COVID-19 ] remains unknown.  Moreover, research from LSU Health Shreveport has shown that nitric oxide is a strong protector against tissue hypoxia, which occurs during severe Covid-1 infection”, said Dr. Chris Kevil, Vice Chancellor for Research at LSU Health Shreveport.

...

Nitric oxide has already been a miracle drug for newborns starved of oxygen by a heart defect due to the gas’s ability to relax blood vessels, which ultimately led to the resolution of erectile dysfunction as targeted by the drug Viagra.

In 1992, the journal Science named nitric oxide “molecule of the year.” In addition, in 1998, UCLA pharmacologist Louis J. Ignarro shared a Nobel Prize in medicine for uncovering nitric oxide’s role as a “signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.”

Italy:

In Italy during the COVID-19 outbreak the gas was used under less controlled study conditions; however the treatment appeared to dramatically boost oxygen levels in the blood of COVID-19 patients, said Dr. Lorenzo Berra, the critical-care specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital who is leading the new trial. However, it will take more rigorous testing to clarify how much nitric oxide helps, he said.

...

When inflammation, emphysema or a disease like cystic fibrosis attacks the lungs, the large blood vessels and tiny capillaries that deliver oxygen constrict. Inhaled nitric oxide also relaxes those vessels, increasing the transfer of oxygen to the blood and easing the heart’s workload.

Extra info:

As scientists race to find specific treatments for COVID-19, the colorless gas nitric oxide has emerged as a candidate.

Nitric oxide works as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular, nervous and immune systems of animals, and is mostly produced in the inner layer of blood vessels called the endothelium. The compound relaxes muscle cells, which in turn prompts blood vessel walls to widen, boosting blood flow and decreasing blood pressure.

As such, physicians have used it for a range of conditions, and it was first approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1999.

Warren Zapol, emeritus anesthetist-in-chief at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor at Harvard Medical School, told Gizmodo nitric oxide is used to treat babies born blue, as well as adults with cardiac surgery, and patients with what is known as acute respiratory distress syndrome, where the oxygen supply to lungs are cut off by bodily fluids. “About a half-million Americans have breathed in NO [nitric oxide],” Zapol told the outlet.

~~~~
One very nice thing about the nitric oxide approach is that it can be delivered through a nasal cannula, or a CPAP or BiPaP machine and face mask. It does not have to be given via a ventilator. And the ventilators themselves may be doing more harm than good. Patients on them have an 80% fatality rate in NYC, and low surviveability rates elsewhere. With many other diseases, patients are only on the ventilators for a day or two, but with COVID-19 many are hooked up for two weeks. Ventilators are a rough treatment, and extended use may do more harm than good.
Generally speaking, 40% to 50% of patients with severe respiratory distress die while on ventilators, experts say. But 80% or more of coronavirus patients placed on the machines in New York City have died, state and city officials say.
Higher-than-normal death rates also have been reported elsewhere in the U.S., said Dr. Albert Rizzo, the American Lung Association’s chief medical officer.
Similar reports have emerged from China and the United Kingdom. One U.K. report put the figure at 66%. A very small study in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the disease first emerged, said 86% died.
The reason is not clear. It may have to do with what kind of shape the patients were in before they were infected. Or it could be related to how sick they had become by the time they were put on the machines, some experts said.
But some health professionals have wondered whether ventilators might actually make matters worse in certain patients, perhaps by igniting or worsening a harmful immune system reaction.
That’s speculation. But experts do say ventilators can be damaging to a patient over time, as high-pressure oxygen is forced into the tiny air sacs in a patient’s lungs.
“We know that mechanical ventilation is not benign,” said Dr. Eddy Fan, an expert on respiratory treatment at Toronto General Hospital. “One of the most important findings in the last few decades is that medical ventilation can worsen lung injury — so we have to be careful how we use it.”
It’s A Floor Wax AND A Dessert Topping
2500 French Cancer Patients Take Methylene Blue. Not One Gets COVID
Methelyne Blue is THE original synthetic medicine and was the first malaria drug back in 1891. It has been used to treat urinary tract infections (and turns your pee blue), has strong antiviral properties, was used to treat psychiatric patients and lead to the development of thorazine, and is used to dye samples for microscope slides. And it’s a fish tank cleaner.
Ok, just like Chloroquine Phosphate, it’s actually an aquarium medicine, but everybody is saying fish tank cleaner, so be it. It kills the fungus in the tank, and the slime on your fish, so close enough.
Oh, and chloroguine is made from methelyne blue. So there ya go.
Here’s another one of those “purely anecdotal” reports:
We report the case of a cohort of 2500 French patients treated among others with methylene blue for cancer care. During the COVID-19 epidemics none of them developed influenza-like illness. Albeit this lack of infection might be by chance alone, it is possible that methylene blue might have a preventive effect for COVID-19 infection. This is in line with the antiviral activity of Chloroquine, a Methylene blue derivative.
Both Chloroquine and Methylene blue have strong antiviral and anti- inflammatory properties probably linked to the change in intracellular pH and redox state.
Europe has been recently been hit by an epidemic of COVID-19. We report a cohort of patients treated for cancer in France. This cohort is managed by an association (Espoir Metabolique) and is a cancer support group. There are 2500 patients all at high risk for sepsis because of concomitant chemotherapy. One of us has interviewed (by telephone and by e mail) these patients to register the cases of COVID-19. As of March 27th, 2020, there were no cases of registered COVID-19 or of flu–like syndroms. These patients were treated by a combination of standard therapy and α-lipoic acid (800 mg twice a day), hydroxycitrate (500 mg three times a day) and methylene blue (75 mg three times a day) as well as a low carb diet.
Patients were also being treated with hydroxycitrate, which is a derivative of citric acid, commonly known as Vitamin C. Lipoic acid is made by most animals, and is needed for aerobic metabolism.
Cancer is another kind of disease able to lead to cytokines storms and one may expect a large number of deaths from COVID-19 in such patients. However, our survey among our database of patients treated with a combination of α-lipoic acid, hydroxycitrate and methylene blue suggests that this treatment prevents from severe infection from COVID-19. It may thus be anticipated, but yet not proved, that MB⊕ could be of considerable help for fighting against the COVID-19 epidemics. Here, we give a survey of the very interesting properties of this molecule with emphasis on chemistry, clinical trials being currently under investigation. Moreover, it is worth noting that methylene blue is the ancestor of modern anti-malaria drugs such as chloroquine and is associated to a lesser toxicity, the only drawback being a green-blue coloring of urine.
Following replication and sub-genomic RNA synthesis, the viral structural proteins S, E and M are translated and inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) for further processing by the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC). After encapsidation of the viral genome by the N-proteins in the ERGIC, budding with viral structural proteins (first with M and E, then with S later on) leads to mature virions. Following assembly, virions are transported to the cell surface in vesicles for further release by exocytosis.
If some S-proteins remain outside the virions, they may also transit towards the surface for mediating cell-cell fusion between infected cells and adjacent uninfected cells, leading to giant multinucleated cells, responsible for virus spreading without detection or neutralization by virus-specific antibodies. Accordingly, the primary determinant for infection of a cell by coronaviruses is the attachment of the virion through non-covalent interactions of protein-S with a suitable receptor. For human coronaviruses it is known that HCoV-OC43 binds to N-acetyl-9-O-acetylneuraminic acid, HCoV-HKU1 binds to O-acetylated sialic acids, while HCoV-NL63 and SARS-CoV bind to heparin sulfate proteoglycans.5 After binding to the cell, coronaviruses use a broad variety of fusion receptors: aminopeptidase N (APN) for HCoV-229E, human leucocyte antigen molecule (HLA class I) or sialic acids for HCoV-OC43, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) for HCoV-NL63 and SARS-CoVs and dipeptyl-peptidase (DPP4) for MERS-CoV. The binding receptor of HCoV-HKU1 remains unknown. ACE2 receptors are expressed by epithelial cells of the lung, intestine, kidney and blood vessels, with a substantial upregulation in patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes or hypertension, who are treated by ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II type-I receptor blockers (ARBs).6 Increased expression of ACE2 is also observed by thiazolinidiones and ibuprofen. It has thus been inferred that people using ACE2-stimulating drugs may have a higher risk of developing severe and fatal COVID-19.
Then the paper gets really medical sciency. But you can follow along somewhat, sometimes. Like the “don’t take ibuprofen right now” part. “cytokine storms” get mentioned several times, lots of chemical formulas and molecular drawings. Bottom line - I think - is that all of these drugs raise the pH in the body, and the virus can’t handle that at all.
All these malaria drugs are made to be synthetic quinine, because there really isn’t all that many chincona trees out there. The original “fever tree”. And you do get a very minor amount of quinine in tonic water, although if you happen to have some powdered chincona bark (Amazon) you can make your own, quite strong. Although too strong can mess you up, so ignore this idea if you’re smart. Kind of wondering if some of that and some zinc supplements might do the job? Actually, everybody else has wondered this already, which is why there isn’t a drop of it on shelves anywhere. And you’d have to drink gallons of it a day, as the pills are wonderfully concentrated.
~~~~

Oh, and just for the hell of it ... the idea of treating COVID with chloroquine has been out there, in the West, online, since early February for the general public. The West had the Chinese study results since January 25:

Chloroquine, a widely-used anti-malarial and autoimmune disease drug, has recently been reported as a potential broad-spectrum antiviral drug.8,9Chloroquine is known to block virus infection by increasing endosomal pH required for virus/cell fusion, as well as interfering with the glycosylation of cellular receptors of SARS-CoV.10Our time-of-addition assay demonstrated that chloroquine functioned at both entry, and at post-entry stages of the 2019-nCoVinfection in Vero E6 cells(Fig.1c, d). Besides its antiviral activity, chloroquine has animmune-modulating activity, which may synergistically enhance its antiviral effect in vivo. Chloroquine is widely distributed in the whole body, including lung, after oral administration.

...

Our findings reveal that remdesivir and chloroquine are highly effective in the control of 2019-nCoV infection in vitro. Since these compounds have been used in human patients with a safety track record and shown to be effective against various ailments, we suggest that they should be assessed in human patients sufferingfrom the novel coronavirus disease.

this report was written by the coolest guy in China, Manli Wang. And Shi Zheng Li, both from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The USA had this information less than 10 days after there was just one known COVID-19 patient in the entire country. Just ONE. Link: the first known case was about 10 days after this report came out. Yes, at that point the threat was considered very low, but several US airports were already screening incoming passengers. On Trump’s watch. So “something was being done” even back then.

A Well Finished loaf

I made the other half of the 4 flour bread dough today. It has been in the fridge for a day and a half. When I cut the dough in halves yesterday, I formed this chunk into a nice boule and put it back in the fridge. So I took it out today, tightened up a boule a little, slashed it and let it rest on parchment paper while the Dutch oven heated to 515°. But before I popped the loaf in, I generously brushed it down with water. That’s what gave it the freckly speckly crust. And that extra moisture may have helped add some oven spring to the somewhat tired dough. This loaf came out just as tall as the one I made yesterday.

515 for 6 minutes in covered Dutch oven, reduce heat to 450 and bake another 14 minutes. Remove lid, place unheated baking sheet under Dutch oven, bake another 20 minutes. Remove loaf, turn off oven, open door for 4 minutes, return loaf to cooling oven, prop door open 1” with wooden spoon, let bread cure for 20 minutes, remove to cooling rack.

That is one gorgeous loaf.

Bye Bye Bernie

Sanders Drop Out

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders announced Wednesday that he is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race, after weeks of clinging to an all-but-impossible path to victory over his moderate rival Joe Biden in a race now frozen by the coronavirus crisis.

Sanders told his staff on a conference call that he is suspending his campaign for president and was set to address his supporters in a livestream event at 11:45 a.m., his campaign said.

In response, the stock market immediately went up.

U.S. equity markets rallied to session highs Wednesday after Sen. Bernie Sanders announced he was suspending his presidential campaign.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 593 points, or 2.62 percent, ahead of the noon hour
while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rose 2.4 percent and 2.04 percent, respectively. The gains have lifted the S&P 500 out of its bear market, which would officially end with the index closing above 2,684.88.

In search of the WHY

https://swprs.org/a-swiss-doctor-on-covid-19/

Here is a link to a long essay that I think is important that you read. Grab a coffee and a sandwich; it took me over an hour to work through it. There are probably 100 links in it that you can follow. The author is making the case against the global shut down, and references data and statements from top doctors, virologists, and statisticians from all over the world.

“Excess mortality” is a term new to me, but it makes a lot of sense. Life goes on. People die all the time. People die from all kinds of illnesses all the time. If COVID-19 is killing people left and right, as the DemPanic media tells us, fanning the flames 24-7, then the numbers should show a spike in deaths. But they aren’t.

It also appears that the vast majority of the people in the daily global COVID death count are not just old, but already suffering from one or more chronic, pre-fatal conditions. Damn near all of them.

Now add in lousy testing, lousy tests (imported from China?), poor record keeping, and a sensationalist media with nearly no medical or scientific knowledge. And you get panic. Global panic, with all kinds of extreme government reactions based on that panic, almost all of them tyrannical in nature. Let no crisis go to waste.

This is not tin foil hat conspiracy nonsense. This is a long essay, put together day by day, tracing the spread of the COVID virus, government and media reactions, and countless buried news stories from confused boots on the ground in the thick of things who aren’t seeing much going on. Every assertion is verifiable; although you may need to translate some of the articles linked to.

Without a doubt, COVID-19 is dangerous. And people are dying. But in so many cases, the COVID is the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back, not the giant Acme safe spontaneously falling from the sky and squashing Wile. E. Coyote. Yet the governments of the world are acting as if it is.

[ Vilmar made a post the other day that the FDA has changed the rules so that deaths even suspected (but not tested) to be COVID related are now to be listed as COVID caused. This is fraudulent, creating fake numbers. Fake numbers that then become headline news, keeping the panic going. ]

The author, a Swiss doctor, gives us the Who, What, When, and Were. But it’s up to you to figure out the Why. Or you could just look at this cartoon, and expand that globally.

“The only means to fight the plague is honesty”

- Albert Camus, The Plague, 1947

https://swprs.org/a-swiss-doctor-on-covid-19/

Northern Italy has one of the oldest populations and the worst air quality in Europe, which had already led to an increased number of respiratory diseases and deaths in the past and is likely an additional risk factor in the current epidemic.

South Korea, for instance, has experienced a much milder course than Italy and has already passed the peak of the epidemic. In South Korea, only about 70 deaths with a positive test result have been reported so far. As in Italy, those affected were mostly high-risk patients.

The few dozen test-positive Swiss deaths so far were also high-risk patients with chronic diseases, an average age of more than 80 years and a maximum age of 97 years, whose exact cause of death, i.e. from the virus or from their pre-existing diseases, is not yet known.

Furthermore, studies have shown that the internationally used virus test kits may give a false positive result in some cases. In these cases, the persons may not have contracted the new coronavirus, but presumably one of the many existing human coronaviruses that are part of the annual (and currently ongoing) common cold and flu epidemics.

Thus the most important indicator for judging the danger of the disease is not the frequently reported number of positively-tested persons and deaths, but the number of persons actually and unexpectedly developing or dying from pneumonia (so-called excess mortality).

image

Dr. Richard Capek and other researchers have already shown that the number of test-positive individuals in relation to the number of tests performed remains constant in all countries studied so far, which speaks against an exponential spread („epidemic“) of the virus and merely indicates an exponential increase in the number of tests.

Depending on the country, the proportion of test-positive individuals is between 5 and 15%, which corresponds to the usual spread of corona viruses. Interestingly, these constant numerical values are not actively communicated (or even removed) by authorities and the media. Instead, exponential but irrelevant and misleading curves are shown without context.

And it goes on and on, page after page after page, reporting every day from all over the world.

•  Sweden, which has so far managed without radical measures and has not reported increased mortality (similar to Asian countries such as Japan or South Korea), is remarkably put under pressure from the international media to change its strategy.

•  Data from New York State show that the hospitalization rate of test-positive individuals could be more than twenty times lower than originally assumed.

•  An article on the specialist portal DocCheck deals with the problem of ventilating test-positive patients. In test-positive patients, simple ventilation through a mask is officially advised against, among other things to prevent the coronavirus from spreading through aerosols. Therefore, test positive intensive care patients are often intubated directly. However, intubation has poor chances of success and often leads to additional damage to the lungs (so-called ventilator-induced lung damage). As with medication, the question arises as to whether a more gentle treatment of patients would not be medically more sensible.

So I have to wonder ... is this continuously fueled global panic a coordinated effort to bring about international Socialism and tyranny? [ what we used to call a “commie plot” back in the Duck & Cover days ] An if so, who is doing that coordinating? Remember “Journo-List” from a few years ago?

The ChiComs Even Screwed Up Our Numbers

Flattening the curve already? Awesome

NY: Cases Down 75%, Death Rate Flatlines

( sorry for that wretched pun )

Computer models predicted apocalypse, but the numbers are crap due to China’s lies.

The number of people hospitalized across the United States as a result of the novel coronavirus illness (COVID-19) is reportedly only a fraction of what some health experts projected a few days ago.

On Monday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters that in his state alone, the epicenter of the viral outbreak in the United States, new coronavirus hospitalizations dropped by about 75 percent, from 1,427 four days ago to 358 on Sunday.

Highlighting the drop in new hospitalizations in NY, the state hardest hit (131,239 cases; 4,758 deaths as of Monday) by the coronavirus, Alex Berenson, former New York Times reporter who has been following the U.S. outbreak closely, observed on Twitter on Monday: “It’s over, guys. It’s already over.”

Well, I wouldn’t go that far. And I wouldn’t grasp this thin straw as a lifeline. But still, it’s good news for today, and might be an “anecdotal” indication of better news tomorrow.

.@NYGovCuomo’s aide Jim Malatras says the projections are now showing that the state unlikely to need 110,000 beds for #Coronavirus.

New projections show MUCH LOWER demand, near 20,000-30,000 range if the new chart is believed.

— Jesse McKinley (@jessemckinley) April 6, 2020

That means the new projections for the number of hospital beds needed in NY are between about 70 and 80 percent lower than initially estimated.

On Monday, Gov. Cuomo acknowledged that the drop in hospitalizations in combination with other signs, like the fatalities remaining flat for the second day in a row and a drop in intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, suggest a “possible flattening of the curve.”

Statistical models attempting to predict the impact of the Chinese coronavirus, including the ones created by IHME, rely, at least in part, on polluted data from the Chinese Communist Party, Breitbart News confirmed last Friday.

A growing number of experts – including Vice President Mike Pence and members of the Whitehouse Coronavirus Task Force that he leads – have questioned the legitimacy of China’s official coronavirus death toll and infection rate.

Anonymous members of the U.S. intelligence community allegedly agree that China has been hiding the severity of the viral outbreak within its borders, under-reporting both total cases and fatalities linked to the disease, Bloomberg reported this week.

The IHME predictions for New York also reflected a discrepancy between the institute’s forecasts and the actual number of hospitalizations.

No word in the media as to why. Not even a maybe why. But NY did start trying HCQ about 16 days ago. Hmmm?

and of course, Obama’s Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, gives HCQ the big meh. Maybe, maybe not. We need to do official long term trials to be certain. Same old same old.

Bread By The Liter

Same basic recipe, slightly different technique. No extended autolyse. Mixed it all together, let it sit 1/2 hour, then power knead until all the dough pulls up and away from the mixing bowl. It’s still a “no knead” bread recipe, but I know better. You have to knead it some at the beginning for better results.

Put it in the Cambro rising bucket; it made exactly 1 liter of dough. 1363gm, because you lose a little water during the rest and the knead. Let it get going for 90 minutes on the counter, then onto the top shelf of the fridge until tomorrow.

This makes two nice sized loaves, which is a dough load size that my mixer is happy with. And unless I can find some bread flour, this is about the last artisanal bread I’ll be making for a while.

400gm KABF
150gm Whole wheat
50gm rye flour
50gm All Purpose flour ( Gold Metal )
13gm kosher salt
487gm 90°F water
200gm sourdough starter, fed 4 hours previous

I store the starter in the fridge. I feed it every week or so. I brought it out this morning, gave it some AP and water for breakfast. It smelled like old sneakers. A few hours later it smelled sweet. So I fed it again. By this evening it smelled even better, so I made dough. And fed the starter a little more, and put it back in the fridge for next time. When the aroma changes from eeewww to yumm, it’s ready to use.

So tomorrow I’ll cut it in half, work one half into shape and let it rise up in the banneton, then bake it. The other half will go back in the cold, and we’ll see how it is the day after that.

Trump Gets It Done, Again

Navy Hospital Ship In NYC Will Now Handle COVID Patients

The USNS Comfort, a hospital ship with about 1,000 beds that recently arrived in New York City, will soon be able to accept COVID-19 patients after it had originally been set up as an overflow facility for non-coronavirus patients.

President Trump said he spoke with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and that both states plan to utilize the ship.

“New Jersey is a hot spot,” Mr. Trump said at the White House. “So Gov. Murphy and Gov. Cuomo are going to be using the ship…it’s set for COVID. Hopefully that will be very helpful to both states.”

“That is a welcome relief, and the president granted the request - he did it quickly,” Mr. Cuomo said on MSNBC.

“If you help me for New York, I will call it the way it is and say you delivered, and he delivered today,” Mr. Cuomo said. “And if I don’t think the federal government is meeting its responsibility, I’ll say that.”

The president swiftly granted a similar request last week to allow the Javits Convention Center in New York City, which has been set up as a makeshift 2,500-bed hospital, to accept coronavirus patients.

Both the Comfort and the Javits Center were originally supposed to be for non-COVID patients and had been intended to free up space for coronavirus patients at other hospitals as New York strains to accommodate the increased demand.

Governor Cuomo will probably be the “emergency shoe-in” candidate to replace senile dementia patient Joe Biden. Given the “emergency” I’m expecting he won’t even primary. The primaries are cancelled anyway. Bernie who?? They’ll simply take an applause vote at the convention ... if it actually gets held ... and give him the green light. So watch Cuomo shift from Big Gov Left Wing Radical to Man Of ALL The People over the next months. OTOH, the only way he’s going to get there is to play second fiddle to President Trump.

Beyond Stupid, Beyond TDS. Actual Evil

Ohio Rep: Charge Trump “Crimes Against Humanity” For Promoting HCQ + Z-Pack

Can’t spell pandemic without “dem” “panic”.
So fan the flames of fear 24-7, and use everything as a political weapon because OrangeManBad. And play can-you-top-this with both the batshit crazy ideas and the marching jackboots of excessive governmental power.

A Democratic state representative in Ohio said she “can’t take it anymore” and vowed to refer President Trump to the International Criminal Court for “crimes against humanity” over Trump’s promotion of a drug that has not been conclusively proven to fight the coronavirus.

State Rep. Tavia Galonski tweeted Sunday after President Trump spoke about hydroxychloroquine at his daily press briefing. The drug, normally used to treat malaria, is one of several that the president has pointed to as showing promise in the fight against COVID-19, but its effectiveness has been a subject of debate.

And do you know why this has been a subject of debate? Because President Trump suggested it. At which point every TDS sufferer in the world started screaming about how terrible, worthless, and dangerous it is. And all the stick-in-the-mud Deep Staters and change-resistant process addicts in the medical world chimed right in. Aided by the DemMSM, who cannot mention the treatment without pimping up how “risky” it is.

It does not matter to them at all that the rest of the world is using this approach and finding moderate or better levels of success. It does not matter that hundreds of millions of people have taken chloroquine, often for decades each, for more than 70 years with almost no significant side effects or negative reactions. Or that doctors have been handing out azithromycin, aka Z-Pack, for more than 20 years, also with negligible side effect. So even if this combo is mostly ineffective it will be at least innocuous.  But every report from everywhere about how it does actually work, and quite well thank you, is dismissed out of hand as “merely anecdotal” or “at best subjective” because Official Medicine hasn’t done a 10 year long multi-part billion dollar study. Field data from all over the work doesn’t count. Because they are all frightened little bunnies who can only follow process and have no ability to think on their own or take the slightest chance on something new. Because malpractice?

“I can’t take it anymore. I’ve been to The Hague. I’m making a referral for crimes against humanity tomorrow,” Galonski said. “Today’s press conference was the last straw. I know the need for a prosecution referral when I see one.”

The Hague is the site of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which boasts 123 state parties. The United States is not one of them. Only member states or non-members who accept the ICC’s jurisdiction can make referrals. Alternatively, the United Nations Security Council can also refer a matter for investigation.

“Crimes against humanity” is a category of offense that the ICC handles. The court provides a list of crimes that fall under this, including murder, extermination, enslavement, torture, and “other inhumane acts of a similar character intentionally causing great suffering or serious bodily or mental injury.”

Fox News asked Rep. Galonski if there is a specific crime she is accusing Trump of committing, and how she plans on pursuing charges given the United States’ non-member status. She did not immediately respond.

Galonski is not the only one to question Trump’s promotion of hydroxychloroquine, given that the FDA has not approved it—or any other drugs—specifically for treating COVID-19.

See? Even FoxNews can’t resist playing the Danger! Danger! Danger! card. No, the FDA has not approved it for this specifically. But they have approved it for this “off label”. Do you want to wait a decade, and possibly be long dead from COVID, or would you be willing to take an infinitesimal risk that just might save your life?

Hey, how about we have DOJ or Congress pass a quick rule that exempts doctors and hospitals from malpractice for using this - as specified by international dosage regimens - as an Off Label approach. Hell yeah. Give me HCQ, Z-Pack, Zinc, and Vitamins C, D, and the B complexes.

Dr. Antony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that the data is “at best suggestive.”

Fauci said he does not think “we could definitely say it works,” noting that in some cases there has been “no effect,” and in others it may have been effective.

I am beyond tired of the lies and the dirty politics and the finger pointing. Not one of these flaming lunatics understands what Stand Together or National Emergency means. I’m past the point of logical discourse and response, not that logical discourse with these people was ever even possible in the first place. They are traitors, and they are evil. As I’ve written for years, if you aren’t one of them they want you dead. And now is there big chance. And maybe a huge-ass part of this national shut-down, this lock down, this deliberate economic suicide, is all to Get Trump. More and more I believe that every damn day.

UPDATE: and here’s one more easily dismissable bit of anecdote:

A Los Angeles doctor said he is seeing significant success in prescribing the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine in combination with zinc to treat patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19.

Hydroxychloroquine has been touted as a possible treatment for COVID-19 by President Trump among others, but it remains controversial as some experts believe it is unproven and may not be effective.

The drug has long been used for treatment of malaria and conditions such as lupus and arthritis but is not technically approved by the FDA for COVID-19. The agency, however, is encouraging trials and has provided limited emergency authorization for its use to treat COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Anthony Cardillo said he has seen very promising results when prescribing hydroxychloroquine in combination with zinc for the most severely-ill COVID-19 patients.

“Every patient I’ve prescribed it to has been very, very ill and within 8 to 12 hours, they were basically symptom-free,” Cardillo told Eyewitness News. “So clinically I am seeing a resolution.”

Cardillo is the CEO of Mend Urgent Care, which has locations in Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys and Burbank.

He said he has found it only works if combined with zinc. The drug, he said, opens a channel for the zinc to enter the cell and block virus replication.

He added that the drug should not be prescribed for those who are presenting only mild symptoms, as there are concerns about shortages for patients with other conditions who need to take the drug on a regular basis.

Note that: it isn’t that this won’t work as a prophylactic or for low level cases, it’s just that there might not be enough of it to go around. For now. We could use another 4 billion pills please.

PS: phrase du jour: analysis paralysis. We’re seeing this 24-7 from the talking heads who can’t put TDS or “that’s how we’ve always done things” behind them.

PPS: I won’t call it anti-anecdotal evidence
, but HCQ trials and off label usage has been going on in this country for a couple of weeks now, to fight a virus that has a 14 day incubation period.
Don’t you think by now, that if this approach didn’t work, the enemy media would be screaming from the rafters how Tump Is Killing Us All?  You know they would. And yet, there’s total silence about this other than the “could be dangerous” talking heads. Which pretty much proves it works.

I’m tired of beating this dead horse even further into the ground. But this damn zombie pony won’t just lie there, and keeps getting up every hour or so.

all this and the kitchen sink

Life goes on during lock down. The kitchen sink clogged up again so I had to take care of that today. The sink drain has a 12 foot horizontal pipe section under the floor, so it’s kind of prone to clogs. Not enough velocity in the water flow I guess. So I did the usual: go get a bottle of drain opener and pour it in. And nothing happened. Instead of the recommended 15 minute, I left it in overnight. And still nothing. Get out the plastic bellows plunger. That one works great on the toilet and the tub, but it doesn’t fit the kitchen sink. So it’s out to the garage to find the old suction cup plunger. And then I plunged away at it. And nothing happened. Oh joy. So find a bucket, get everything out from under the sink, find my big grip Vise Grips, and open the P-trap. Went in there with a coat hanger wire, couldn’t find anything. Back to the garage to find my hand auger and the power drill. Tried the auger manually first, and found the clog about 8 feet down the line. Spin the handle, work the spring wire back and forth. Got it clear, then went another 4 or 5 feet more. Nothing. Got it out, put everything back together, and it’s cleared. Woo hoo. And my reward for that is getting to do all the dishes that accumulated while the sink was clogged. Joy. But it was kind of nice to do something normal again. Even if we’re still stuck in the house.

It costs about $300 to have the plumber come and rout out the drain. The auger goes for about $25. The large jaw locking pliers have a million uses, but are perfect for working on 1 1/2” pipes. No home should be without both.

NJ BS: Raise Taxes To Stabilize Revenue Stream

This is major BS.

Gas Usage Drops, So NJ To Raise Pump Taxes?
They “deserve” to collect a fixed amount, regardless of consumption

Say what??

A formula in the 2016 state law that raised the tax nearly 23 cents a gallon [ under Chris Christie a couple years ago ] also allows for yearly adjustments to make sure the gas tax generates a steady amount of revenue, just under $2 billion.

If sales go down, the tax goes up. And right now, they’re going down drastically.

“Obviously lower volumes and lower activity in our transportation system is going to cause an automatic need – and that’s how the legislation is written, right? – an automatic need to raise the tax,” said Regina Egea, president of the Garden State Initiative, a conservative think tank. “And we think that’s the wrong thing to do, given we’re going to be in recovery ideally in the fall.”

The state Treasury Department hasn’t issued monthly revenue reports since the coronavirus crisis began, but it said in a notice to bond holders March 23 that collections of motor fuels taxes and others have been reduced significantly.

Egea said the gas stations’ association has estimated a 65% drop in gas sales. GSI says a comparative analysis by the crowd-sourced traffic site INRIX estimates that passenger travel in New Jersey was 55% lower on March 24 than on the same day a month earlier.

Egea said the increase can be avoided if the Legislature steps in and passes a law changing the 2016 legislation. She said it would have to be done before Aug. 31, the deadline for calculating the increase based on past-year collections and future projections. Any increase would take effect Oct. 1.

“It’s just something, one more item that the Legislature is going to have to deal with, and frankly I think it’s to the overall economic benefit of all the residents and all the businesses, this has to be part of their consideration when they do the budget,” Egea said.

Egea said the formula should be changed permanently to require a law to be passed each time the tax goes up, rather than have it be determined by the state treasurer, in consultation with the top finance official for the Office of Legislative Services.

“Every other tax increase has to voted on by the Legislature,” she said. “This one was delegated, and I think it ought to be back and they ought to have it on their record.”

Another one of my crazy delusional ideas: your state government spends no more than they take in as taxes, so they adjust the budget accordingly. And a good 25% of the budget goes towards paying off what they owe from previous deficit spending.

Is capitalism now a crime?

Where do you draw the line between profit and profiteering? Should there even be one? What really is price gouging, other than reacting to market conditions? Ever read the James Clavell novel King Rat??

We’re in this emergency situation ... or we’re being lead to believe we’re in one. One of the major changes has been a massive increase in government power. Never let a crisis go to waste, right?

Here’s another case.

Brooklyn Guy Busted For Hoarding | Price Gouging

Federal agencies confiscated tens of thousands of medical supplies from a Brooklyn man who had been selling them at illegal marked-up rates from warehouses in New York and New Jersey.

The supplies have been sent to health departments in New Jersey, New York City and New York state, which will provide them to healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients.

Among the items seized from the home of Baruch Feldheim, 43, were 192,000 N95 respirator masks, 130,000 surgical masks, procedure masks, N100 masks, surgical gowns, disinfectant towels, particulate filters, bottles of hand sanitizer, and bottles of spray disinfectant, according to the Department of Justice.

Feldheim was arrested Monday and accused of accumulating the items in order to sell them to doctors and nurses at inflated prices, according to New Jersey U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito. Some of the supplies had been shipped from Canada, investigators said.

Feldheim was released March 30 on $50,000 bond. Feldheim will be paid fair-market value for the supplies, according to the Department of Justice.

“This is the first of many such investigations that are underway,” said Peter Navarro, DPA Policy Coordinator and Assistant to the President. “Our FBI agents and other law enforcement agencies are tracking down every tip and lead they get, and are devoting massive federal resources to this effort. All individuals and companies hoarding any of these critical supplies, or selling them at well above market prices, are hereby warned they should turn them over to local authorities or the federal government now or risk prompt seizure by the federal government.”

“If you are amassing critical medical equipment for the purpose of selling it at exorbitant prices, you can expect a knock at your door,” said Attorney General William P. Barr. “The Department of Justice’s COVID-19 Hoarding and Price Gouging Task Force is working tirelessly around the clock with all our law enforcement partners to ensure that bad actors cannot illicitly profit from the COVID-19 pandemic facing our nation.”

Sure, the guy was making a killing. But how is it that he was able to get his hands on this much PPE in the first place? Come on, get real, you KNOW he had none of this stuff on hand before Hannukkah. And tell me, please, what’s the price point line for this stuff? Just how much was he marking them up? Where’s the line?

Back when this all first hit, I bought 2 N100 masks from Amazon. 3M brand particular respirator model 8233. They cost me $13.60. EACH. It took weeks for my order to be delivered. I don’t know what these things used to cost, back in the days of reality. Because I’d never heard of the things, and when I did a bit of mask research, I found these were the best you could get. So I bought some. Better safe than rich, right? Did they used to cost a buck each? I have no idea. Maybe our all-powerful government will publish pricing guidelines, wholesale and retail. Control the market. Freeze the prices, like Nixon did. And that worked out so well, right?

I notice that the seller, Hugo’s, no longer has the masks. But they do have toilet paper. Commercial size rolls, unknown brand, 2 ply, great big 500 sheet rolls. Carton of 96 for $123.64. So that’s 4 times as many rolls as the big 24 pack you can buy in the store, and each roll is quite a bit bigger. So figure it as equal to 5 24 packs. Do those cost $24 each? Or are they only $12? Is this price gouging too?
