going viral

too darn many news stories on Kung Flu

•  Sick guy was told by doc to stay home. He goes to party. Now everybody is kung flu fighting. What a dick. I expect to see nearly instant and very strong changes in social behavior as this thing runs rampant. Everyone will be watching everyone for coughs, sneezes, touching, etc. Sanitizer wipes will be everywhere. Pack your mask and your nitrile gloves in your pockets.

•  Welcome to NJ. Yeah, it’s those same people who had the big measles thing last year, and before that the hepatitis outbreak. Not the best way to win friends.

•  Airport health screener has it. I have to wonder, how many people did he infect and not know it? Some jobs should be done by robots.

•  Darn, you can no longer kiss your dog in Hong Kong. Despite doggie masks, pets are getting sick with this too.

•  Hungary gets it, but not from Chinese. From Iranians. Hasn’t the world put them all on lockdown yet?? And now that Turkey has opened their borders to the EU, is a new biological diaspora intifada starting up? Zombie Apocalypse? This kind of thing can lead to war. Bad.

•  The American Solution: Bury the disease in money and pork Congress approves $7.8 billion to do whatever it takes. 3 times more than Trump asked for. Sorry, I’m too much of a cynic to wonder which shysters are going to get even richer from this, and I expect ZERO fiscal accountability. Exactly 2 Republicans voted against it, saying it was way too much money for now. Maybe later, but not now.

•  Latest fatality: small airlines? Maybe our One World masters should just put a leash on the banks and credit card companies for a while, and ready some kind of virus welfare handouts for the millions who are going to lose work, jobs, homes.

Warren Drops Out

Meh, I’d hoped she last at least a week past Super Tuesday. Nope.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the 2020 presidential race Thursday after a disappointing Super Tuesday in which she failed to win even her home state—a development that could boost Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign by making him the lone progressive standard-bearer in the Democratic field.

But, while making the widely expected announcement outside her Cambridge home with her husband Bruce by her side, the Massachusetts senator declined to make an endorsement at this stage.

“Not today,” Warren said, noting that she wanted more time to think about the decision.

Her exit essentially leaves the race as a one-on-one battle between Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is surging after claiming a stunning 10 victories on Super Tuesday. Warren first revealed the decision in a late-morning, all-staff call on Thursday.

Well. let’s not forget that Tulsi Gabbard is still in it too, and after winning ONE delegate in Samoa she’s qualified to be in the next debate. Unless the DNC changes the rules again, but doing so would be actively shutting out a Woman Of Color, so that’s bad optics. And she’s a she, and decades younger than either of those other too super seniors, plus the military thing and so on. So maybe her star is about to shine forth. Let’s see what happens.

Moving That WIBCO Phoenix Bowstring

Ok, I’m a month behind on this one.

Pick It Up And Put It Away
Minnesota Engineers Remove 1873 Kern Bridge From Crumbling Foundations
Longest bowstring arch truss in USA, one of the few Phoenix column bridges left, this iron maiden is going to be warehoused and put somewhere else, someday

image

A southern Minnesota bridge nearly as old as the state itself is on the road to a new home, after being delicately moved from its precarious perch on Thursday.

Crews using a pair of cranes carefully lifted the 147-year-old, 189-foot-long Kern Bridge in one piece, off its crumbling abutments along the Le Sueur River and alongside a nearby town road.

“We were all kind of holding our breath,” said Lisa Bigham, state aid engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s District 7. “It took a while to get everything kind of in place, the cranes to be positioned where they needed to be. Then, we were just kind of watching. And then, all of a sudden you could see air in between the bridge and the abutment. And it actually went very smoothly.”

...

The Kern Bridge had spanned the Le Sueur River south of Mankato, Minn., since 1873, just 15 years after Minnesota became a state.

Also known as the Yaeger Bridge, it carried people, wagons and farm animals, then cars until being closed to traffic in the early 1990s.

MnDOT reported that it’s the only remaining example of a “bowstring arch through-truss” bridge left in Minnesota, and the longest remaining in the United States. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kern Bridge was built of wrought iron in 1873 by the prolific Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, OH (WIBCO), who built for the long haul; hundreds of their bridges are still in use today. As a testament to it’s strength, cranes picked up this nearly 150 year old bridge by both ends and it didn’t bend or break. Well done WIBCO.

This one is a very rare puppy though. It is of the older bowstring arch truss design, not a Pratt or a Warren through truss. And the arch is made of Phoenix columns, specially bent to order by the iron masters at the Phoenix Iron Company. So it’s rare X rare X rare. It is nearly 100% original, which is also highly rare for such an old bridge.

The bridge was closed to vehicles in 1990. Plenty of more information and photos located here.

Phoenix columns ... are pretty riveting.

Hey Goombah, Thanks For Nothing!!

23 Italian Tourists Visit India. 17 Have Coronavirus.

A group of Italian tourists have been put in quarantine in India, with 17 testing positive for the new coronavirus, a source told AFP Wednesday.

Italy is a hotspot of the deadly virus with 79 deaths and more than 2,500 infected, while India’s official case total stands at only 21.

After two out of a group of 23 tourists who arrived in the country last month tested positive in the western state of Rajasthan, the other 21 were put under quarantine in a special facility in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“Out of the 21 tourists, 15 have been tested positive for coronavirus. We are awaiting test results of the others,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

Worldwide around 3,200 people have died from the virus with more than 90,000 infections, with China, South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan the worst affected.

India has now stepped up preventative measures including barring visitors from Italy, Iran, South Korea and Japan, except diplomats and officials from international bodies.

No doubt they won’t let anyone from China in either, but I guess that’s a given at this point pretty much anywhere in the world.

Houston, We Have Lift-Off

Countdown in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Ignition!!

Rocket Bread
A big hybrid loaf for the impatient baker

image

Here’s a recipe that’s so simple you don’t even knead need the recipe. I’ve always called it 3-2-1 bread, but when made with starter and a whole measure of yeast it takes off like a rocket, and goes from flour to table in under 4 hours.

3 parts bread flour to 2 parts all purpose flour to 1 part whole wheat flour, 70% hydration. 2.5% salt, and 1 part well fed sourdough starter, plus a measure of yeast. I guess that actually makes it 3-2-1-1 bread, but who cares?

Standard mixing, kneading, and rising procedures, but watch the dough. It comes up FAST.

Here’s a half sized version of the recipe, which will make one generously sized 24 ounce baked loaf:

188gm bread flour ( 1 1/2 cups )
125gm unbleached all purpose flour ( 1 cup )
62gm whole wheat flour ( 1/2 cup )
9gm table salt
1/2 cup sourdough starter, well fed and kept at 100% hydration
250gm warm water ( 1 cup and 1 tablespoon )
1 measure instant yeast ( 1 packet or 7gm )

Put the starter in a medium mixing bowl, add the water and stir until dissolved. Sprinkle on the yeast and let it sit 10 minutes, then stir it in. Whisk the flours and the salt together in a big mixing bowl.

Add starter water and yeast to flour mix, use your stand mixer on low (speed 1) for a couple minutes, a bit past that “shaggy mess” stage. Let it rest 10-15 minutes.

Knead the dough for 1 minute at speed 2, then at speed 3 for 2 minutes, then at speed 4 for 3 minutes. 1-2-3.

Transfer dough to a lightly greased rising bucket or bowl, cover.  When dough has doubled in size in about 40 minutes, use your plastic bowl scraper and a damp hand to do a few stretch and fold kneads right in the bucket. Cover again. In an hour the dough will have at least tripled in volume. Put your Dutch oven in the oven and set the temperature to 450°F. Dump the dough out on a very lightly floured surface and gently stretch it a bit and work it into a ball. Stretch this boule into a batard (loaf) by working the sides down and under to develop surface tension. Pinch the seams closed, and place smooth side down in a well floured shaping basket (banneton).  I use a linen lined one. Cover and move to the fridge to slow the third rise down while the oven heats.

After about 30-45 minutes the Dutch oven should be plenty hot. Lay out a sheet of parchment paper and flip the banneton onto it, gently lifting it to release the dough. Score the dough 2 or 3 times with a serrated bread knife or your lame. Lift the paper and the loaf into the Dutch oven, and bake covered for 20 minutes and then uncovered for 15-20 minutes more. Put an unheated baking sheet under the Dutch oven when you take the lid off to prevent the bottom of the bread from scorching. When done, remove the Dutch oven, take the bread out onto a cooling rack, turn off the oven and open the door. After a couple minutes of cooling, return the loaf to the oven to cure; use a wooden spoon to keep the door cracked open a little, and let the bread normalize while the oven cools, about 20-30 minutes. This will keep the crust crusty as the moisture inside migrates to the crust.

Valerie Powers Makes Her Groovy Move

Valerie Jarrett: Dem VP Pick Should Be Woman Of Color

Because, you know, Valerie is a Woman of Color. Yeah ... white. She so white she make Corey Booker look like Kanye.

Former President Barack Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett on Tuesday urged whichever 2020 Democratic presidential candidate emerges as the leader after the conclusion of Super Tuesday to “break with conventional wisdom and announce a running mate that’s a woman of color,”

...

“Tonight?” asked host Gayle King.

“No, not tonight,” Jarrett replied. “Certainly before the next primary. Woman, person of color, someone who reflects the diversity of our party. And yeah, that’s not usual, that’s not what they normally do, but these are not normal times. And I think it would send an important signal going into the next round of primaries to do so with a running mate.”

Maybe Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is available?

I have no interest in this at all, but I couldn’t resist putting up a picture of her in her Austin Powers outfit. Compare her tone to the three white folks she’s on the video with.

Sleepy Creepy Uncle Joe Pulls Ahead

Exactly As Expected

And the Super Tuesday results are in, with the status quo supporting, deep state backed, quid pro quo, somewhat senile, DNC machine approved candidate Joe Biden pulling ahead of grumpy old osteoporosis hippie commie Bernie Sanders.

The running totals are here; Biden 387, Sanders 348, Warren 45, and Bloomberg 37. With only 3129 delegates to go!!

Elizabeth Warren only placed 3rd in her own home state. Go away lady Gollum, nobody likes you.

The press will be droning on endlessly about all of this for the next several days. Major yawn. Get back to me when one of these buffoons passes the 1400 delegates mark.

~~~~
And it looks like “we’re in it to win it” Mini-Mike is calling it quits
At least he had the guts to stay in until after Super Tuesday.
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg suspended his presidential campaign Wednesday after a disappointing Super Tuesday performance, sources told Fox News.
The decision comes after the Democratic candidate won only the American Samoa caucuses on Super Tuesday. He spent hundreds of millions of dollars from his own fortune on his 2020 bid.
He immediately announced he would be endorsing Joe Biden.
Thank goodness there’s still a 1/1024 WOC still in the race, or else it would be one rich old white idiot vs another rich old white idiot. Let’s see if Liarwatha Fauxchahontas Chief Walking Eagle can last another week or three.
Yeah, that’ll work
Ayatollah: Oil Your Butt Hole, Cure The Coronavirus
A local cleric from the Iranian city of Qom has suggested a novel cure for the new coronavirus - the pre-bedtime rectal administration of violet leaf oil.
Users on Twitter describe how the Ayatollah Tabrizian has publicly denounced Western medicine as “un-Islamic”.
In a post to over 120,000 followers on the social messaging service Telegram, Tabrizian, a purveyor of traditional Islam medicine, listed several alternative techniques for fighting the spread of the contagious disease, known as Covid-19.
According to an Iranian news site, which obtained a screenshot of the message, Tabrizian recommends consuming copious amounts of brown sugar, burning wild rue, as well as inhaling snuff.
His eighth tip is the most striking: “Before bedtime, drench some cotton in violet oil and apply onto your anus”
Ayatollah Tabrizian has written extensively on the essential oil, which he claims has miraculous, life-enhancing properties, such as the power to increase brain mass and reverse cognitive diseases such as Down’s Syndrome.
Yeah, let’s let these brainiacs get the bomb. Riiiight.
To be fair, violet oil does have a following in the natural medication community.
It can be inhaled to help with sleep issues, anxiety and to relieve congestion. The easiest way to do this is to add a few drops to a handkerchief or tissue paper and inhale the aroma directly.
Which makes me seriously wonder about this ayatollah’s sleeping arrangements.
It is an analgesic, expectorant and a decongestant, which makes it particularly helpful for any types of aches and pains.
...
In addition, it can be used to reduce swelling and inflammation when massaged into the painful area 3-4 times a day.
And now I’m also wondering about his “lifestyle choices”.
Headline Pun With Levels Of Innuendo
The cover of today’s NY Daily News, the standard NYC liberal rag, the front page story of how all the other Dem candidates are hopping on the Biden Bus:
Go Joe Rabbit
This may be really apt in a dark and convoluted manner. There is currently an oddball film out called JoJo Rabbit. It’s about a German boy who joins the Hitler Youth near the end of WWII. He’s such an ardent little Nazi that he creates Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend. It’s a dark comedy, a coming of age story, and a tale of moral conundrums, as young JoJo has to balance the antisemitism he’s learning at Nazi Camp with the fact that his mother is sheltering a young Jewish Girl in the crawlspaces of their house.
To say that the film is controversial is an understatement. It’s also an emotional whipsaw rollercoaster, taking you from spill-your-popcorn laughter one moment to recoiling in horror the next to terrible crying sadness and back again. I think I might want to see this, even if it does turn out to be super weird; the performances by most of the cast are said to be superb.
So just what is the Daily News trying to say? Sure, sure, NY papers go to extremes to find wretched puns for their front pages, and sometimes they (subconsciously?) hit the bullseye more than intended. Biden seems confused a lot of the time. So is JoJo. Biden has moved really far left in the past year. At the far edge of the leftist horizon, beyond “regular” Socialism but just before tyrannical slave masters and rabid Communists, are the Nazis. The original of those national democratic socialist workers parties, with their Brown Shirts and Antifa folks, etc.
[ review of the film ] a tale of a young Hitler-loving German boy struggling to maintain his allegiance in the latter stages of WWII sounds like a potentially disastrous idea. Actually, though, it turns out to be a masterstroke, as Waititi’s eye for the absurd and sharp understanding of a child’s perspective finds light and humanity amid even mankind’s darkest moments.
What’s more, far from trivializing the horror of the time, the playful, sometimes laugh-out-loud tone that underpins much of the film makes its tough moments all the more gut-wrenching, while Waititi’s strident reminder that so much evil and hatred was able to come from what ultimately boils down to almost childish stupidity resonates way beyond the final credits.
Wow, that seems like one helluva endorsement doesn’t it? “Everybody line up behind der Furor. Ready to fight Bolshie Bernie? Forward March! “ ... until this latest furor changes his allegiance or forgets about his imaginary friends??
I Hear It Must Be Spring
It’s sunny and nearly warm today. The lawn service people have arrived with their army of gas powered leaf blowers. They’re all outside my unit right now, making sure the throttles are nice and lubricated, so they can rev those horrible things up and down every few seconds for the next several hours. I’m sure they’ll then practice blowing my early emerging flowers right out of the ground again.
One of the nice things about Winter is that they aren’t around. It’s quiet. And since we’ve only had one bit of snow this season that was worth shoveling, the 3am snow squad hasn’t been around either. More quiet.
Right. Time to make breakfast. Looks like it will be sourdough starter pancakes. You feed the stuff, you get more of it, but you can’t make 3 loaves of bread a day to keep it in check. So you find other things to do with it. Checks fridge ... finds bacon ... mmm!
Oh Joy, it’s Super Tuesday!! Snore ...
That’s Good Writin There
Daniel Greenfield on Trump bashing, the coronavirus, and the deeper state
This is a must read. 15 minutes.
If the coronavirus becomes a critical problem in this country, the blame will go back to an obscure arm of the State Department, but it will never be placed there. Whatever happens a year from now, no one outside a small professional class will have ever heard of the Directorate of Operational Medicine.
The media will spend all its time bashing President Trump, Pence, assorted cabinet members, and perhaps the CDC, without ever drilling down to the facts, even though it has them at hand. The media’s rule of thumb is that natural disasters and disease outbreaks are always successfully managed by Democrats and mismanaged by Republicans. Katrina and Maria were disasters, but Sandy was a success story. The coronavirus is a catastrophe, but the Ebola virus was brilliantly handed by smart people who are handling the coronavirus response. But it’s different because the guy in the White House is.
The truth is that all of these were mismanaged by the same agencies, many of the same people, and by a government infrastructure that excels at drawing up big budget proposals, but is inept at solving problems when they actually emerge, and just follow whatever protocols will cover its collective asses.
All the rest is a matter of the uncontrollable, the innate qualities of the storm or the disease, and the story that the media chooses to tell about the disaster in the service of its political agenda.
Just as after Katrina and Maria, watch for the outpouring of lies, the claims that New Orleans had reverted to cannibalism and that everyone in Puerto Rico was dead, will be matched and exceeded.
There will be a cure for the coronavirus. But there’s no cure for the spread of viral fake news.
There is however a cure for the decisions that led to a coronavirus problem in the United States.
It’s called the Constitution.
President Trump did not want any of the infected people brought into America, whether they were citizens or not. The shadow government, deeper than the Deep State, did it anyway. Because that was their protocol. The same protocol used for SARS, for Ebola, for Swine Flu, etc, under several presidents. The same people even.
he truth about disaster relief and pandemic management is that it hasn’t changed much between administrations. The Bush administration dealt with SARS in much the same way that the Obama administration addressed swine flu. And the Trump administration is doing most of the same things.
That’s because the actual decisions are being made by bureaucrats based on existing protocols.
...
According to a State Department briefing, the missions were carried out by the Directorate of Operational Medicine within the Bureau of Medical Services. You might think that sounds like it would be part of HHS or NIH, but the Bureau of Medical Services is actually an arm of the State Department.
The Directorate of Operational Medicine is a part of the Bureau assigned to deal with crisis response with a $250 million portfolio and a lot of employees that almost no one outside D.C. ever heard of.
The same guy in charge in 2011 is still in charge today. That doesn’t make him bad, or inept ... but bureaucrats mindlessly follow their own rules, always. Little robots, because that doesn’t require any thought or any risk, and they can’t be blamed for anything. And the vast majority of those rules, and their regulations that the rest of us have to obey, are never made with any kind of legislative oversight. The perils of big government. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) could write books on this subject. Oh wait, he has.
Modeling Can Be Such Hard Work
It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it
For the Valentine’s Day issue of New York magazine in 2002, they hired a model to kiss a NYC fireman who was also a model on the side. The idea was to pay homage to the famous iconic VJ Day picture of a sailor kissing a woman in Times Square. To get the picture just right, they had to do several hundred takes. In the wake of 9/11, NYC firefighters were the apogee of heroism.
So, tough job for a pretty model, right? Having to kiss a hunky fireman for half the afternoon. Oh, such a trial.
The model was some Slovenian named Melania Krauss. Off camera, she happened to be having an on-and-off relationship with NYC real estate mogul Donald Trump. We don’t know her as Melania Krauss these days, and her hair seems to be many shades lighter.
