Winter’s Last Gasp

What the heck? It snowed here last night. We were having some rather heavy rain, but late in the evening the temperatures dropped, and suddenly those horrible white things were falling from the sky. I had a rime of slush on the windshield; no real accumulation at all. But still. And this morning it’s just barely above freezing; some water in a planter out here on the deck is frozen solid. I have no idea how cold it got here last night, but around 10 we turned the heat back on and this morning it’s still a bit cool in here. Sweater weather indoors, in mid-April.

But lucky us, we got off light compared to a vast swath from the northern plains states eastward ...

After a taste of spring to end this past week, the East and Midwest are flipping to a wintry feel as colder temperatures dive south the next couple of days. In fact, there will be just enough cold air in place to result in wet snow accumulations in parts of these regions.

Record cold gripped parts of the Midwest Tuesday morning. Among larger cities, Sioux Falls, S.D. recorded a record low of 11 degrees, its coldest temperature in the historical record so late in the season. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the former city of Stambaugh (now part of Iron River) plummeted to 6 degrees below zero Tuesday morning, also its coldest reading so late in the spring.

Early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service office in Negaunee, Mich. dipped to 5 degrees below zero. This was the latest in season a location in the Marquette, Mich. area dipped below zero, besting the old record by a whopping six days (Apr. 10, 2007). In addition, daily record lows for April 16 were set in Binghamton, N.Y. (19 degrees), Toledo, Ohio (19 degrees) and Pellston, Mich. (1 degree).

More than a foot of snow just east of Minneapolis. Cleveland OH got snow and saw a temperature drop of more than 42° in just a day. Record low temps are being set up and down the east coast from Boston down to Raleigh. Crivens!

two views on suicide

Earlier today, I posted about a suicide with the comment, “ At the age of 89, with her health failing and knowing with age would come more failure, and while still in control of all her faculties, she decided to end it there before such decisions could be denied her.”

The elderly lady didn’t much care for the world of 2014 and in passing (no pun intended there) said she wanted no part of it.  With her health failing due to heart and lung problems, she saw no future she could cope with.  Or maybe she just didn’t want to cope.

Well, Wardmom had some strong feelings on the subject and expressed them clearly as she always does.
And, caused me to think quite a bit more and so I started to reply. Before long I realized I was writing another post as opposed to a simple comment.
By the time I finished what I had to say, and then deciding to post here instead, I also realized that what I had to say would not work unless I also posted Wardmom’s comment. And so I do so now, because taking one’s own life is a very serious subject.

I know I’m going to upset some here - as one’s life is and always should be one’s life - and business, but to me, this line explains it all:

never married or had children.

Self-centered from the start to the end.
How one can say ‘my life has been so full, with so many adventures and tremendous independence’ and go on to snuff out that life while blaming ‘modern’ society? Sounds more like she was scared to death of being dependent on anyone - most especially strangers - at the end.
It’s why most people have children - it used to be to take care of you at the end. Now, you might get lucky and have one descendent who gives a damn enough to visit once in while.
Fight it or embrace it - but never give up, never give in. Giving in, giving up are the ways the haters, takers and amoral scum - win. They have succeeded in beating you down. Posted by wardmama4

My answer as follows

Wardmom, there are some of us who just are not child oriented and who never had the desire to be parents. Doesn’t make us self centered, I don’t believe. Are people obligated to have children?

I had a career instead of a family, which never mattered to me. And having children with the thought that someday I might need care, seems not to be a good reason to have them. And if it is, is that not just as self centered?  And selfish?  Why should anyone have children if it isn’t in their nature? Not all people are natural parents. I never had the desire to father kids.

You seem to be asking how anyone could have had a full life if they ended up topping themselves. I don’t see the discrepancy.  Why isn’t it possible?  One has nothing to do with the other. There have been lots of very successful and happy ppl who, as the lady here has said, with her health failing (heart and lungs) the future was not going to get better and so ended it.

I had several years here of watching someone die by degrees. Several years of watching my wife run herself ragged caring for her mom, her back problems (my wife’s) made worse over time. The diaper changes by care workers coming in 2wice a day to turn and wash the old lady and wipe her ass. That sure as heck is not the way I want my exit to be when it comes.

I have no intention of putting my wife thru the hell of care giving after what I have seen. And to be very honest, even if I were not married and alone, I don’t want to be wearing diapers and having strangers come into my home to clean me up and wipe my backside cos I can no longer do it for myself.  That isn’t living.  That’s just existing.  For some folks I suppose that’s enough.  To simply breathe, and if lucky breathe all on their own.  If that’s what they want and they’re satisfied with what little there is, then more power to em.  But it surely is not my idea or my choice of being alive.

Never give up? Never?
I don’t think so.
There comes a time for all of us where a decision is going to be made. I never want to be in that sad position I read about, where someone’s life is a misery, they want out of it, but can’t because that decision has been taken away from them. By strangers who can not possibly be inside their head or any other part of their body, to experience the same agony.

You said; “Sounds more like she was scared to death of being dependent on anyone - most especially strangers - at the end.”

Well, based on what I have seen and what I have heard and read, seems to me to be an honest and legitimate concern. Seems like legit fright too.

In the end, with failing health anyway, and modernity not to her liking, I think she was less blaming the modern world for her decision; rather, she was saying I believe, there’s nothing in this world I will miss, nothing here I think enough of to want to remain in it.  So goodbye world, I leave you to it and happy to do so.

What’s so wrong about that?

Would That It Were Otherwise

A nice medium essay on real “equality” over at SBPDL

Aside from some problems with basic math - the whole Trayvon thing was 2 years ago now, not 1 - he hits the nail squarely on the head.

Welcome to the new reality. And it’s a bitch.

This is what it means to live in the United States of America.

What a horrible racist thing to write. And how even more racist of me to mention it. Bull. Shit.

I was watching Brit Hume talking to Bill O’Reilly on Fox News last night. These two “fair and balanced” old white farts were debating - now, in 2014, not in 2007 - whether race has been any advantage to Barak Obama and Eric Holder. And I’m pretty sure that their conclusion was ... maybe. Bull. Shit. Responsible journalism at it’s finest. Not even close.

No worries; I also saw Fox’s panel discussion about the Bundy ranch and the BLM - and not a single word about Harry Reid and the China connection. You know, the one Infowars broke, that was nearly immediately coincidental with the BLM backing down and this becoming an instant non-story, the moment it went viral around the world.

But hey, later on I saw yet another panel discussion on Fox about the situation in Ukraine (in which token leftist and Obama sycophant Juan Williams STILL worships Lord Obama) and nobody said a syllable about Putin having his hand on the gas valve of Europe. Unreal. And Fox is the best we have. “Fearless and un-biased” they like to say of themselves if I recall correctly. Pure. Bull. Shit.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the world that can actually think ... “tanks alot” ...

Happy Tax Day

Get to work proles. Fill out those forms. Send in your money. You OWE it to the government. They NEED it.

Because poor Harry Reid can’t get by on $175,000 a year plus all the graft he can skim from the ChiComs.

Because the IRS needs your money to continue their campaign of harassing Conservative groups.

And don’t ever forget how much guns and ammo cost, that entire alphabet soups of government agencies need to keep you in your place; why I hear now that the hundreds of soldiers, cops, FBI agents, and BLM snipers around Cliven Bundy’s ranch didn’t even have bullets in the hundreds of guns they were aiming at the unarmed citizens engaged in peaceful protest, while threatening to shoot those same protestors. Probably because those folks had the audacity to NOT have their protest within some BLM specified “free speech” zone.

But those are really only very minor examples of what your government needs your money for. The very largest need they have is to give it to other people, often disguised as a political favor to ensure their reelection. But income redistribution, “spreading the wealth around” is what the government does. Assisted by hundreds of thousands of very well paid workers with no oversight and no accountability and no chance of ever losing their jobs. And so many of these people have a political agenda that silently guides them, an agenda you would never even think of. But most of what’s left after it flows through the sticky fingers of “management costs” goes to our poor. Folks who live better than 90% of the rest of humanity worldwide, but this is America. But hey, they don’t have jobs, so we’ve got to extend a hand.

Another enormous chunk of your taxes goes to funneling money to foreign governments, these days mainly countries who are what the kids call “best frenemies”. Friendly enemies we’re always nearly ready to have a war with, but in the meantime let’s buy every last product they can produce or dig out of the ground, and while we’re at it let’s borrow trillions from them at usurious interest rates. So in essence we’re paying fat interest to borrow our own money back, to hand it out to our people who don’t have jobs, because the jobs they might have had are now in these “frenemy” nations employing their ever growing population while ours declines. Meanwhile, hundreds of islands right off the coast of the US are chock full of unemployed or underemployed foreigners, many of whom would cherish the chance to grow or build something to sell to those rich Americans right next door. Screw them. We’ll send all our cash to the absolute opposite ends of the earth before we build up the economies of our own little neighbors.

Happy Tax Day.

growing old is no walk in the park.  I’d say just ask her, but she is no longer of this world.

It’s fairly typical of the Mail to have somewhat misleading headlines.
In fact, anyone who only skims the headlines in this paper will generally come away with the wrong story.
In this case though, they may be very close to the actual facts.

The elderly lady was indeed simply put off by and very tired of … a more modern age than she grew up in.
I think all of us at times, while appreciating the advances in and uses of technology and medicines and entertainment, seriously question many things that have gone wrong.  I think that’s true of every generation.
In this case, the lady in question went to Dignitas in Switzerland, and put an end to a life she no longer was happy with.

At the age of 89, with her health failing and knowing with age would come more failure, and while still in control of all her faculties, she decided to end it there before such decisions could be denied her.

For very similar reasons but with even more health issues, a woman of 99 last week ended hers also.
I can easily understand both of them.  I don’t buy the slippery slope scare mongering critics who claim legalizing assisted suicide will open the floodgate to assisted murder.  Easy for people who still have health, are not old and helpless and outlived their closer family and contemporaries, to “insist” that those eager to end it all, should remain alive and miserable at the behest of strangers who believe otherwise.
All life is NOT precious.  To some, life can be a burden unbearable to them. And so they end it.  While they are still able to.

She btw suffered from heart and lung disease, yet the Mail in all their pompous wisdom describe her as, “healthy”.

Teacher died at Dignitas because she couldn’t bear modern life: Healthy spinster’s despair at fast food, email and lack of humanity

The 89-year-old, from Sussex, said she couldn’t keep up with modern life
She claimed new technology had ruined face-to-face human relationships
She was neither terminally ill nor disabled, but ended life at Swiss clinic
Case is likely to stoke ongoing debate over the right to die

By Claire Ellicott

A retired art teacher committed suicide at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland after she grew weary of the pace of modern life and how technology was changing society.

image

The 89-year-old felt that her failing health, as well as her belief that people were becoming ‘robots’ attached to their gadgets, gave her little reason to live.

The woman, who wanted to be known only as Anne, had suffered from worsening health in recent years, but was neither terminally ill nor disabled.

Her case will stoke the ongoing debate over balancing a right to die against the dangers that vulnerable people could be exploited.

Yesterday critics warned that any relaxation in the law in Britain could lead to increased risks for the elderly and disabled.

Anne gave an interview days before she died in which she said computers and email had taken the humanity out of social interaction.

A keen environmentalist, she also said she worried about the impact of overcrowding and pollution on the planet, adding that the only thing that gave her pleasure was feeding birds in her garden in Sussex.

She described her feelings as she walked down supermarket aisles looking for fruit and vegetables to make soup, only to be appalled by the mass of ready meals.

In the interview, published in The Sunday Times, Anne said: ‘Why do so many people spend their lives sitting in front of a computer or television?

‘I have never had a television, I have only had a radio ... people are becoming more and more remote. We are becoming robots. It is this lack of humanity.

‘I find myself swimming against the current, and you can’t do that. If you can’t join them, get off.’

She said she was dismayed that ‘all the old-fashioned ways of doing things have gone’, adding: ‘They say adapt or die. At my age, I feel I can’t adapt, because the new age is not an age that I grew up to understand. I see everything as cutting corners.’

Anne was born in Kenya and never married or had children.

A former electrician with the Royal Navy, she was also a keen sportswoman and played tennis until the age of 70.
‘I find myself swimming against the current, and you can’t do that. If you can’t join them, get off’

As she grew older, her health became increasingly poor and she suffered from heart and lung disease.

She committed suicide by taking a lethal overdose of barbiturates on March 27, after saying: ‘I don’t want to die whimpering, but go out with a bang.’

In her submission to the Dignitas clinic, she wrote: ‘My daily action to feed birds in the garden is a joy. However, my lack of strength and energy and declining health is a life with no enviable future.

‘My life to date has been full, with so many adventures and tremendous independence.’

Her niece Linda, 54, who also wanted to be known only by her first name, agreed to accompany her aunt to Switzerland where they spent a few days sightseeing before going to the clinic.

Mac on… Hardline Muslims.

Mac on… Hardline Muslims said to be infiltrating school governing boards
By Mac

image

Taken from the morning issue of, The Daily Mail.

Political illustrators ( I was told not to call em cartoonists but isn’t this the same?) seem always (almost always) to nail the issue with a pic and a few words. Sometimes they do it with no words at all.

In case any here missed a previous posting on the topic ....

The British Government has ordered inspections of 15 schools in Birmingham after allegations they are being taken over by Islamic hardliners. A row has been brewing in the UK’s second largest city for weeks since the local council received an anonymous letter alleging a plot to force a change of leadership at four state-run schools.
The aim was apparently to impose a conservative religious agenda, turning parents against head teachers by telling them the school is corrupting their children with sex education, promotion of homosexuality and making them take part in Christian prayers.
Unnamed school staff have since made accusations about gender segregation and the bullying of non-Muslim staff.
The central English city has one the highest Muslim populations in the country. The 2011 census found 22 per cent of residents were Muslim, compared to 4.8 per cent nationwide.

Bestest GoT Ep Evah!!

The Purple Wedding

Fans of HBO’s feudal war epic Game of Thrones had their moment of orgiastic schadenfreude last night with the conclusion of King Joffrey and Queen Marjory’s wedding.

A few pictures below the fold capture the very best parts. SPOILERS ahead, if you haven’t seen the episode yet. It will be one I watch again and again. Heck, I might even have to figure out how to copy it to DVD.

late night free association

I need a cuppa tea before I can get back to sleep ... grab a mug, flip on the kettle, heating the water, impatiently, glance at the clock on the stove, and the brain throws up

Midnight;
And I’m a waiting
on the PG Tips
Hoping that a mug of Rich
will put me down for this bedtime

... damn, I know that tune! Where, when, who??

I can hear the wooden guitar in my mind. I can hear the beat, driving busily along like an old steam locomotive.

Who done it? Was this a Linda Ronstadt tune from forever ago? No. Come on brain ... dig it up ...

Midnight;
And I’m a waiting
on the 12:05
Hoping it’ll take me
Just a little farther down the line

Moonlight
You’re just a heartache in disguise
Won’t you keep my heart from breaking
If it’s only for a very short time

Right! Queen of Hearts
Now, who did that? Was is Hart? No. Not Abba. Dolly Parton? I don’t think so, but some of that TN twang is in there. Olivia Newton-John? No, but ...

It was a woman named Juice Newton. Early 80s, country rock singer. Did this one, did Angel of the Morning, did a couple other ones I can’t remember, faded off the radio.

Really nice looking lady. TONS of soft blonde hair. Made Farrah Faucet look bald in comparison.

image
I seem to recall her hair was even longer and fuller than this at some point. Maybe I was 21 and it was my hormones.

Yup, once upon a time this was pop music. Not only could you dance to it, rock style or country style, you and your date or even a carload of friends could sing along. Because we were that innocent in some ways, way back when.

Mmm ... the tea is just right now. Glug glug glug, and back to bed. Well, after I sneak one of these blueberry muffins I found in the pack here on the kitchen counter. Hey, I’m doing them a favor, keeping one from going stale!

Flaming Hot Ingratitude

Thanks For Employing Everyone

Now Go Away

Irwindale CA city council: Sriracha factory [that employs 200 of their 1400 residents] is a public nuisance.

A Southern California city declared the factory that produces Sriracha hot sauce a public nuisance Wednesday night, and gave its operators 90 days to make changes that stop the spicy odors that have prompted complaints from some residents.

The Irwindale City Council’s action allows city officials to enter the factory and order changes if the odors persist after the 90-day deadline. The measure passed by a unanimous 4-0 vote.

The decision came despite testimony by air-quality experts that progress was being made toward a resolution. The South Coast Air Quality Management District said its inspectors have taken air samples inside the plant, and believed the information gathered should allow the factory and the city to resolve their differences.

Attorney John Tate, who represents Sriracha maker Huy Fong Foods, Inc., said the company had been working with the AQMD on its filtration system since the complaints first arose and was committed to finding long-term solutions by June 1.

He called the public nuisance declaration a demonstration of “the city flexing its muscle and thumbing Huy Fong in the eye.”

In November a judge ordered the company to stop producing the annoying odors, but by then the annual pepper-grinding season, which runs from August through October, had ended. A preliminary injunction in the case was granted and a trial is set for November.

In the meantime, several residents complained that the smell was persisting as Huy Fong Foods workers continued to bottle the popular hot sauce that is a staple in Asian restaurants and homes. Data provided by the AQMD showed the majority of complaints came from four households.

Huy Fong Foods moved to Irwindale two years ago, opening a new $40 million plant in the largely industrial city of 1,400 residents.
...
He said the privately held company took in about $85 million last year, adding it employs about 200 workers during the pepper-grinding season and 60 year-round.

A little ramble on that other preamble

The Preamble to The Bill of Rights

Congress of the United States
begun and held at the City of New-York, on
Wednesday the fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.

THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.

RESOLVED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, two thirds of both Houses concurring, that the following Articles be proposed to the Legislatures of the several States, as amendments to the Constitution of the United States, all, or any of which Articles, when ratified by three fourths of the said Legislatures, to be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of the said Constitution; viz.

ARTICLES in addition to, and Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, proposed by Congress, and ratified by the Legislatures of the several States, pursuant to the fifth Article of the original Constitution.

As plain as day. The Bill of Rights exists solely to more specifically limit the power of the federal government. That’s its job.

I could go on and on. These are just the tip of the iceberg. Sometimes even the Supreme Court gets it wrong; the Kelo v. New London decision severely weakened your right to own property, even though it seems to be a reiteration of 1945’s Berman v. Parker. Just one of many. So far, about the only right that hasn’t been violated is the Third Amendment, the forced quartering of troops in your home.

I’m sure you can find violations of most of the other Amendments, and violations of other sections of the Constitution. When you come right down to it, many or most of the departments of the federal government shouldn’t even exist. The whole idea of constitutionally severely limited central government seems to have been forgotten a long time ago.

Islam Is What Happens When Civilization Loses.

This is not a short article, so there’s only a small portion here.
Mr. Greenfield has a lot to say.

“Western civilization has grown degenerate

At its barest minimum, civilization is co-existence. Islam is the opposite of co-existence and of civilization”

H/T Canada Free Press

Islam Is What Happens When Civilization Loses
By Daniel Greenfield

Saudi Arabia and Qatar aren’t talking to each other. Syria and Turkey are shooting at each other. Not only are the Shiites and Sunnis killing each other in Syria, but the Sunni groups have been killing each other for some time now. There are even two or three Al Qaedas fighting each other over which of them is the real Al Qaeda while, occasionally, denying that they are the real Al Qaeda.

There’s something about Syria that splits down everything and everyone. Even Hamas had to split between its political and military wings when choosing between Iran’s weapons and Qatar’s money. Doing the logical thing, the military wing took the weapons and the political wing took the money so that the military wing of Hamas supported Assad and its political wing supported the Sunni opposition.

It’s not, however, money and weapons that splits Muslims over Syria. Money and weapons are only the symbols. What they represent is Islam. And what Islam represents is the intersection between identity and power.

A modern state derives its power from its identity. That is nationalism. The Japanese and the Russians were willing to die in large numbers for their homeland during WW2. Both countries had undergone rapid de-feudalization turning peasants into citizens with varying degrees of success. Japan and Russia, however, had historic identities to draw on. The rapid de-feudalization in the Arab world had much messier results because countries such as Jordan and Syria were Frankenstein’s monsters made out of bits and pieces of assembled parts of history stuck together with crazy glue.

The Middle East is full of flags, but most are minor variations on the same red, green, black and white theme. The difference between the Palestinian flag and the Jordanian flag is a tiny asterisk on the chevron representing the unity of the Arab peoples.

Every time you see the Al Qaeda “black flag” of Jihad, it’s already represented in the black stripes on the flags of every Arab nation. What Al Qaeda has done is strip out the other colors representing the various succeeding caliphates and gone back all the way to the black of Mohammed’s war flag.

(Mohammed hadn’t originated the black flag. Like the rest of Islam, it was a tribal adaptation. Black had been the color of the headdresses worn into battle. It symbolized revenge. As a warlord, Mohammed often wore black. Black came to symbolize Islam, the color which does not change, for the religion that does not change. Impermeable, offering no illumination or light.)

TWO HEADLINES, SAME STORY.  SIGN OF THE TIMES.

Two different headlines from two different conservative papers covering the same story.

The Telegraph is the more responsible and less tabloid in their approach.
But the Mail?
The Daily Mail is a whole other country.

It isn’t a pleasant story and to be honest, it has all the elements to make an oldster like myself much concerned about the future.

I think the care home in the following story could have handled this a lot better. They could have spoken to the old fellow and heard what he had to say.  But their reaction was typical of the informers and jobsworths and the politically correct lemmings that populate the world today.

First, from The Telegraph.

The headline.

Man, 83, barred from sick wife’s side after giving her painkiller.

Walter Crompton was detained by police for seven hours when he went to visit his wife of 60 years who suffers from dementia

By Telegraph reporter
4:05PM BST 10 Apr 2014
An 83-year-old man was arrested and locked up for seven hours for giving his wife painkiller patches at a care home.
Walter Crompton was detained by police when he went to visit Ellen, his wife of 60 years, who suffers from dementia.
Care home staff had contacted officers four days earlier after Mr Compton gave her the morphine patches.
He was arrested for administering a toxic substance and his subsequent bail conditions bar him from seeing his wife until the end of the month.
Mr Compton insisted the treatment had been prescribed by a doctor. “It’s a patch. Nobody ever killed anybody with a patch. I don’t understand why they needed to arrest me. I was just trying to help my wife and I didn’t know it was against the rules,” he said.

Same story …. The Daily Mail headline.

And for the record. Anyone who served in the forces at any time in any way, is, according to their headline writers, a hero. See the last line just before the link.

RAF hero, 83 arrested and locked up for seven hours – for taking painkillers to his wife in a care home

AN 83-year-old grandfather was arrested and banned from seeing his wife of 60 years after he gave her painkiller patches during a visit to her care home.
Walter Crompton took in the prescription medication – which contains morphine – when his wife Eileen complained about pain from arthritis.

But suspicious workers at the care home in Manchester called the police and the devoted husband was arrested for ‘administering a noxious substance’.
The RAF veteran was then detained for more than eight hours – seven of which were spent in a cell on his own without any food. He was asked to give fingerprints and a DNA sample and his house was searched, before he was interviewed by officers at midnight.

Mr Crompton was eventually released and taken home at 1am – but as part of his bail conditions he was barred from contacting his 83-year-old wife or visiting the care home. He now has to be supervised during his visits and could still be charged. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to five years.
Last night Mr Crompton said he had been treated as if he was a ‘drug dealer’ and ‘hardened criminal’ for giving his wife the patches she had been prescribed by a doctor for more than six years.
‘I have been her carer for 15 years, to arrest me over a criminal act is crazy. I used to look after her 24 hours a day so I know what she can and can’t have.
‘They put me in a police van and locked the cage. I have never been in trouble in 83 years. The police banged me in a cell. I have never been in a cell, I’ve only seen stuff like that on television.’
At midnight they sent for a solicitor and took me into the interview room where I was interviewed for 45 minutes.
‘Fortunately the solicitor said this is ridiculous and I got home at 1.10am.’
Mr Crompton was at first not allowed to see his wife. From yesterday his bail conditions were changed so that he can visit her – but only with a supervisor.
He said: ‘A woman is going to tell me when I can see my wife.
‘If I want to go at one o’clock she has to agree otherwise I can’t see her. You don’t want somebody sat there when you are seeing your wife.

Mr Crompton, who was an aircraft engineer, joined that RAF aged 20 and was based in North Wales and Germany.

Sorry about the link that isn’t. It worked for me earlier but .... no longer.  ??  The article was in the morning issue of The Daily Mail which has an online version.
Usually, everything they have in the hard copy is right there online too.  Sometimes however, and I’ve no idea why, what we find online is Press Display. Where, I can usually get the article I’m looking for.  It’s where I got what you see above.

Ha, found the Mail Online version

press display   seems to be working again. never mind.

No Kidding

Hey boys and girls!! Remember learning about The Carbon Cycle in 7th grade science class? Guess what? Nothing has changed at all in the years since then, except millions of stupid people have become willfully blind!

Report: CO2 Is Not a Pollutant, Provides ‘Beneficial Impacts’ to Planet

Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant but a naturally occurring chemical compound that benefits plants and thus, the planet and its inhabitants, according to a lengthy report released Wednesday by the free-market Heartland Institute.

“Carbon dioxide is an aerial fertilizer that provides many beneficial impacts,” said Craig Idso, one of the lead authors of the report, when CNSNews.com asked him to name the most salient finding of the 37 scientists from 12 countries who contributed to it.

“You can look at thousands of studies – real world data studies that have actually been conducted that demonstrate beyond any doubt that higher levels of CO2 are going to increase the productivity of plants,” Idso said.

“They’re real,” Idso said of the benefits of CO2. “They’re not imagined. They’re not projected. They’re real, and they’re occurring now.”

On December 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final regulation listing CO2 as one of the greenhouses gases that is considered a pollutant that “endangers public health.” The regulation is part of what the EPA says is required under the Clean Air Act.

I am waiting for the day the entire country rises up and tells the EPA to go fuck. They are beyond merely out of control. They are a clear and present danger to the security of the free people of this nation.

“One of the overall important findings of our report is that atmospheric CO2 is not a pollutant,” Idso said. “It is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that offers many biosphereric benefits.

“Probably chiefly known among all of these benefits is that elevated levels of atmospheric CO2 tend to increase the biomass and productivity of nearly all plants and ecosystems on earth,” Idso said.

Some of the other findings in the biological impacts report summary include:

• The ongoing rise in the air’s CO2 content is causing a great greening of the Earth.

• Rising levels of CO2 are increasing agricultural productivity around the world, therefore increasing food security.

• Terrestrial ecosystems have thrived around the world where temperatures have warmed, including amphibians, birds, butterflies, other insects, reptiles and mammals.

• A modest warming of the planet will result in a net reduction of human mortality from temperature-related events.

Not that we’re getting any warmer. But sure, a bit more CO2 means the Carbon Cycle runs faster. Want to slow it down? Breed more clams and oysters. They lock up Carbon in their shells, and after a few million years become limestone. In the meantime, they become lunch. Works for me!

seriously ... what kind of tardfest have we become that adult people don’t even understand the carbon cycle? High school Earth Science. 10th grade stuff. Hello, stuck on stupid, please come in??

Obama’s Priorities?

Let’s not secure the borders and make America safe from hostile invaders. Let’s make the desert scrub safe for a tortoise while we persecute a family who has ranched here since the 1870s.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
