When President Obama told business owners, “You didn’t build that!”

When President Obama told business owners, “You didn’t build that!” this was just one passing skirmish in the war on achievement.

I was reading Thomas Sowell long before his hair turned grey.  Over time and getting involved in other reading and things personal, I’m sorry to say he got lost in my grab bag of hold to read later things.  So I was grateful to an old friend who sent this to me.

It should be required reading here in the UK also because what he writes about sure applies here. In spades as the saying goes.

I have often wondered why we can’t have people like Mr. Sowell in public office, instead of the deadbeats of both parties we are saddled with now.
I don’t have the same cozy, warm and especially trusting feeling I once did.  And if I were a Brit and a voter here, I wouldn’t feel any better about those who
lead.
Having said that ... if I were a voter here, I think I could trust Nigel Farage and UKIP.

The War Against Achievement

A friend recently sent me a link to an inspiring video about an upbeat young black man who was born without arms. It showed him going to work—unlike the record number of people living on government payments for “disabilities” that are far less serious, if not fictitious.

How is this young man getting to work? He gets into his car and drives there—using controls set up so that he can operate the car with his feet.
What kind of work does he do, and how does he do it? He is involved in the design of racing cars. He sits at his computer, looking at the screen, with the keyboard on the floor, where he uses his toes as others use their fingers.

His story recalls the story of Helen Keller, who went to an elite college and on to a career, despite being both deaf and blind. Her story was celebrated in books, in television documentaries and in an inspiring movie, “The Miracle Worker.”

But our culture has changed so much over the years that the young man with no arms is unlikely to get comparable publicity. Helen Keller’s achievement was seen as an inspiration for others, but this young man’s achievement is more like a threat to the prevailing ideology of our times.

The vision on which the all-encompassing and all-controlling welfare state was built is a vision of widespread helplessness, requiring ever more expanding big government. Our “compassionate” statists would probably have wanted to take this young man without arms, early on, and put him in some government institution.

But to celebrate him in the mainstream media today would undermine a whole ideological vision of the world—and of the vast government bureaucracies built on that vision. It might even cause people to think twice about giving money to able-bodied men who are standing on street corners, begging.

The last thing the political left needs, or can even afford, are self-reliant individuals. If such people became the norm, that would destroy not only the agenda and the careers of those on the left, but even their flattering image of themselves as saviors of the less fortunate.

Victimhood is where it’s at. If there are not enough real victims, then fictitious victims must be created—as with the claim that there is “a war on women.” Why anyone would have an incentive or a motivation to create a war on women in the first place is just one of the questions that should be asked of those who promote this political slogan, obviously designed for the gullible.

The real war—which is being waged in our schools, in the media and among the intelligentsia—is the war on achievement. When President Obama told business owners, “You didn’t build that!” this was just one passing skirmish in the war on achievement.

The very word “achievement” has been replaced by the word “privilege” in many writings of our times. Individuals or groups that have achieved more than others are called “privileged” individuals or groups, who are to be resented rather than emulated.

The length to which this kind of thinking—or lack of thinking—can be carried was shown in a report on various ethnic groups in Toronto. It said that people of Japanese ancestry in that city were the most “privileged” group there, because they had the highest average income.

What made this claim of “privilege” grotesque was a history of anti-Japanese discrimination in Canada, climaxed by people of Japanese ancestry being interned during World War II longer than Japanese Americans.

If the concept of achievement threatens the prevailing ideology, the reality of achievement despite having obstacles to overcome is a deadly threat. That is why the achievements of Asians in general—and of people like the young black man with no arms—make those on the left uneasy. And why the achievements of people who created their own businesses have to be undermined by the President of the United States.

What would happen if Americans in general, or blacks in particular, started celebrating people like this armless young man, instead of trying to make heroes out of hoodlums? Many of us would find that promising and inspiring. But it would be a political disaster for the left—which is why it is not likely to happen.

In an unusual order, the court said that Gregory Holt, 38, should be allowed to grow a beard of up to one-half of an inch in length in accordance with his Muslim beliefs.

The court was responding to a handwritten request filed by Holt, who recounted his lengthy and unsuccessful attempt to fight the grooming policy.

Holt is serving a life sentence for burglary and domestic battery at the Varner Supermax prison, according to the Arkansas
Department of Correction’s website.

The Supreme Court’s order said Holt could keep his beard while he files a petition with the court seeking review of a June appeals court decision that went against him.

As linked above, “Holt also wrote how he wasn’t bound by American laws, but only recognized the Shariah law of Islam.” Apparently SCOTUS agrees with him, for now.

Has this received much coverage over there?  Never surprised these days at what folks get up to.  But this one is total weird for sure.
At the beginning, she was attacking this big guy who could have decked her easy, but for some reason didn’t.

Was a time long ago when loons were kept away from the rest of us, but the rights industry decided that they had rights, one of which was to get in our way and in our face.  In a perfect world, I guess she’d have been put away somewhere, where perhaps she might have been helped.

A video has appeared online that shows the plane being flown at an air show and hobbyist event in Germany.

The remote-controlled plane has an 18-foot wingspan, weighs 150lbs and is powered by four jet turbines.

Muslim Brotherhood supporters disrupt London university lecture on Egypt

Well ... I guess finally and I doubt this will be the last time, a group of muzzie vermin managed to drive a speaker off a platform at a college.
They have brought the fight in Egypt here. There was no security and nobody able to stop them as ....  they stopped a speaker who apparent;y was not of their click and who didn’t share the same opinion.  So good muslims that they are, they shouted him down and made themselves masters of the hall that evening.

Coming to a college near you?  Oh yeah.  They will. Because the west is so weak, so appease and accommodation minded, that it will not use the measures necessary for its own survival.  Instead, the west will continue to show the face of fairness by charging one of its Marines with murder, just because he killed a taliban prisoner.  A little thing like that. My gosh.  You’d think he killed something human.

A guest lecture at a London university was shut down when Muslim thugs backing Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and deposed president Mohamed Morsi forced the speaker off the stage.

London Evening Standard (h/t Susan K) Speaker Mohamed El-Nabawy had to be ushered off stage by security guards when around 30 demonstrators stormed a lecture theatre at Bloomsbury’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), which is part of the University of London. 
They were said to have targeted the public discussion, focusing on the challenges facing Egypt, because of Mr El-Nabawy’s ties to the Tamarod group which opposed ex President Mohammed Morsi. The movement played a key role in the ousting of Muslim Brotherhood-backed Morsi in June this year.

Thousands of Roma could claim compensation after a list made by police in Sweden was deemed to have breached their human rights.

Skane County police said they compiled the list of 4,700 names because it ‘helped them tackle crime’.

However a commission has ruled that the list was prejudicial as it lead to Roma being watched who hadn’t done anything wrong.

The list, which the commission said was the result of several years work, contained the names of 200 dead people, alongside children’s names and those of distant relations of Roma living in Sweden.

Skane police could now be in for a bill of hundreds of thousands of pounds following the decision by the Commission on Security and Integrity Protection as every one of the 4,500 living people named are entitled to compensation.

Skane County police has claimed the list was assembled to ‘fight a criminal network rather than to keep tabs on people of a specific ethnicity.’

However the ruling found that there was ‘no clear reason’ for the list, adding: ‘An undefined purpose gives no framework to the personal data, which in practice undermines the protection of individuals’ integrity.’

Sweden’s national police commissioner Bengt Svenson said: ‘I hope and pray to god that this is the only registry of this kind. It’s upsetting. This is completely unacceptable and I cannot understand the purpose of it.’

The news comes just a week after European human rights campaigners warned that media coverage of missing girls discovered with Roma families risked perpetuating ‘age old myths’ about the travelling people.

The case of Maria, a blonde girl found living with Roma in Greece, stunned the nation after she was found to belong to a Bulgarian family leading to allegations of kidnap.

Nils Muiznieks, the Council of Europe’s commissioner for human rights, said: ‘Most news reports, not only in Europe but all over the world, have insisted on the ethnicity of the families from which the children have been taken, thus propagating age-old myths portraying Roma as child-abductors.’

Meanwhile Britain is preparing to open its doors to thousands of Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants from 2014 as part of EU free-movement agreements.

Myth my butt.  Yeah ... a myth based on absolute fact!

Hey, personally I think the kids who did this look kinda silly, but on the other hand it was a clever stunt.
A send up of Somali pirates.  The pose the girl took in this photo looks plain dumb, but then I suppose not being an actress or a professional model, she struck the pose she felt looked .... ?  Smart?  Whatever.
But for all the folks now shouting RAAAAAAACE.  I tell ya I’d like to mowem all down. Somali pirates happen to be black. Or at least a very dark brown. So the kids dress up but since they’re white, they are now condemned AND ....  The suck ups at the newspaper want someone to ID the kids.
This is all the result of very successful brain cleansing and indoctrination on a massive scale, by the politically correct left bed wetters, of generations of youth from the time they enter schools. And maybe before. They have managed to carry things so far that nowadays, to use the term colored in reference to a person is now “offensive” and “insensitive.”

A group of law students were at the centre of a racism row today after they ‘blacked up’ for a fancy dress drinking session.

The ‘Beerienteering’ event, organised by The Edinburgh University Law Society, had an Around The World fancy dress code.

But four members sparked outrage after pictures emerged of them dressed as Somali pirates with their faces painted black.

The group - made up of three males and one female - happily posed for pictures but were later challenged by angry members of other societies.

One student said: ‘This is an image of black and ethnic minority oppression becoming manifested in students’ costumes.

Is that last line some kind of major pc bs er what? Does the jerk actually believe what he has said?  Or does he say it because he thinks he should believe it?
I’m telling you folks ... the universities are taking in and graduating fools and worse.

An official event page describes Beerienteering as ‘a steeplechase around the bars of Edinburgh full of plenty challenges and surprises’ and tells attendees to ‘expect over-the-top fancy dress.’

Teams of four students including one girl, must race around Edinburgh’s pubs completing various ‘challenges’ along the way to find out their next destination.

The winning team is the one which completes the route in the shortest time.

It is understood that door staff at The Hive nightclub in the city were challenged by other students after allowing the controversial group entry to the venue.

The door staff are believed to have replied that those who were offended could ‘head somewhere else’.

The Edinburgh University Law Society is an independent society and is not affiliated with the Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA).

Nadia Mehdi, vice president of Societies and Activities at EUSA, said: ‘I’m really shocked to see that in this day and age these students weren’t aware of or chose to ignore the offence they would cause by painting their faces black.

‘It’s not acceptable and should not be condoned. The Law Society is not a EUSA society so we can’t discipline them, but I will be bringing this to the attention of the Law School.’

Keir Gilius, President of the Law Society, said in a statement: ‘The fancy dress theme was All Around the World.

‘As a society, we try to arrange our events with innovative and interesting themes leaving scope for attendees to use their imaginations.

‘In no way was this theme intended to incite racism or cultural appropriation and, as a society, we are vehemently opposed to discrimination of any form.

‘On behalf of the members of our society, we apologise unreservedly for any upset caused.

‘In response to some of the costumes designed, in the future we will strive to ensure that any fancy dress events will actively discourage the use of any costumes that could be perceived as being offensive.

‘If so, the wearers may be denied participation in said event.

‘As a society, we respect our members’ right to freedom of expression, however, cultural insensitivity is intolerable and this is something that we are completely opposed to.

Funny innit how some folks feel they are qualified to decide what is culturally insensitive and intolerable. I guess anything that isn’t politically correct by all these future lawyers is intolerable.

‘In light of the ongoing and comprehensive commentary on our Facebook page, I would not propose to discuss any further details.’

A spokesman for the University of Edinburgh said: ‘The University takes issues relating to equality and diversity very seriously and hopes and expects that all members of the University community do the same.

‘To this end, it has a range of relevant policies and procedures in place to address such issues as they arise.’

Yeah I know. I’ve used her in the past but.  I really like her. And that smile. What I really like a lot is, there isn’t any photoshop and the lines around her beautiful eyes are not hidden. She isn’t an actress or a model either. Just natural woman.  I think she’s another Goddess.
Her name is Charlotte Tilbury, and she’s a world class movie and model makeup artist.

This is Celine Dion, and before today I had never heard of her. But I liked this blk and wht photo of her.

OK ... I know the art lovers among you won’t be satisfied unless I also present something to stimulate the ... mind as well as the eye.

Superintendent Kevin Purcell, policing commander for North Worcestershire, had apologised to drivers for the traffic tailbacks but insisted there was no alternative but to close the motorway.

He said: ‘I would like to apologise to all motorists and local people who have experienced significant disruption as a result of this incident.

‘Clearly we strive to resolve such matters as quickly as possible, but I would like to make it clear that the threat of harm both to the individual concerned and to vehicles driving on the M42 is so significant, that there was no alternative but to close the motorway and for it to remain closed until the incident has run its course.

Like his apology will make things move. He probably doesn’t mean it anyway. And the idea that there is not alternative is BS. Of course there is.

Boom-boom and traffic clears and people on their lawful way to continue with their lives.  Why should that be so darn hard?

Meanwhile ... as you’ll read in the article , other roads are also being affected.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
