As Usual, The Brits Are Wrong

To quote from the link in Peiper’s post below ...

While the House of Representatives was voting late on Monday night, by sheerest coincidence I was watching the Oscar-laden Lincoln on telly. Waking to news of the government shutdown yesterday, it was impossible not to marvel anew at the Republican Party’s development.

The film deals with the period leading to the House passing the 13th amendment which abolished slavery in April, 1865 – and a century and a half later, so absolutely does the party of Honest Abe disdain the authority of the first black President that it has paralysed the government in a bid to delay the introduction of what it calls Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act). Such is progress in the crazy, crazy world of the GOP.
...
The catastrophe belongs to a Republican Party which will rightly be blamed for once again using terrorist tactics, as with the debt ceiling crisis of 2011, to challenge the authority of the first black President.

First off, FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING BOLSHEVIK COCK SUCKING BRAIN ROTTED ZOMBIE FUCK.

Oops, sorry, had an Eddie Bear* moment there, some flash outrage over the disdainful patronizing gak above that implies that Republicans should obey a President merely because of his skin color, which is perhaps the most insulting reverse racist thing I’ve ever read.

But of course, when the English hold a mirror up to themselves they see “Ameracur” as they say it, and like objects in the mirror, what they see is exactly backwards.

And speaking of backwards, here’s Pat Buchanan, who, like a broken clock, is right twice a day. And here’s your real truth, plain and simple:

This Is All About a Petulant President

In the showdown over the shutdown of the U.S. government, the Obamaites tipped their hand yesterday as what their strategy is.

Taking a page out of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals,” the plan is to maximize the people’s pain — to maximize the political damage to the enemy, the Republican Party.

What else explains it?

...

Undeniably, Republicans have voted to defund Obamacare, to suspend it for one year, and to reform it. But in each of these three votes, the House also voted to fund the entire government.

Why, then, is the government shut down? Because Harry Reid and Barack Obama have issued an edict: Either Obamacare is fully funded and untouched in the continuing resolution, or we kill the CR, shut down the government, and blame you.

And this is exactly what is going on.

This is all about a petulant president whose prize program the people do not want, but who insists it be imposed upon them, to assure himself a paragraph in the history books.

This week, Republicans tried to pass legislation that would keep open all memorials and monuments, all tourist sites in Washington, D.C., and all programs for America’s veterans.

Who stonewalled that? Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama.

Why would Reid sabotage the funding the National Institute of Health.

Why would Reid sabotage what is transparently a humanitarian act?

Again, Reid and Obama do not want to ease the pain of the people. They want to intensify that pain, ratchet it up, maximize it, to put maximum pressure on and do maximum damage to the GOP.

The Obama-Reid strategy is, in a word, sadistic.

Don’t listen to idiots from across the pond. We have plenty of our own idiots to listen to. And sometimes they’re even right.

Our pResident and his top minions are having a temper tantrum, and forcing hundreds of thousands of worker bees to kick their feet and spill their porridge along with him.

So let’s send them to bed without their suppers, and if it continues, out comes the slipper.

* [ Eddie Bear? Was that his name? the guy with the 4 word vocabulary who took over McGoo’s blog for awhile? I deleted the link at that point and can’t remember. Really emphatic, but after 2 nearly identical posts, really boring. ]

Very sexy mouse. No actual Furries were harmed in the making of this video.

brace yourselves bmews. you won’t like this one. but it won’t hurt you to read it.

A day or so ago I posted a column that was written by a Brit covering things in the USA, and his column certainly did not endorse the president or his program.

Now then, not to be fair or anything, and only because I chanced upon this article which I am certain will cause some of our readers to experience the RCOB.
Again, a Brit writer telling the audience here all about it over there.  And it is entirely another POV, from the left.

The one point I believe we might have to concede on is race.  I think it’s true that there are many who no matter what, just can not tolerate a man of any color in the oval office.  A white guy with a deep suntan wouldn’t be welcomed either. I think we all know that.  And btw ... can anyone even imagine a person who is Jewish, in that office?

And finally, is anyone else really tired of hearing the term ‘black president’ as though he has no white in him?  Just suspend belief for only a moment. What if we had say, not Obama, but a dark skinned guy named Smith who was black and white.  You just know the press would always refer to him as black, forgetting the white part altogether.

The US shutdown isn’t serious, but the reasons behind it are

By Matthew Norman

The GOP’s intrasigence under Obama has scaled maniacal heights
I was watching the Oscar-laden Lincoln on telly. Waking to news of the government shutdown, it was impossible not to marvel anew at the Republican Party’s development.

The charge of being a dictator is often made against Obama by the screeching harpies of America’s frothing right.

Congress passed his Act at the end of 2009, and having had almost three years to reflect (and watched the Supreme Court uphold its legality), the people re-elected him. A law guaranteeing citizens a modest form of universal health care has now been ratified by the legislature, the judiciary and the electorate, and this is not enough to persuade the Republicans that it should probably therefore be effected.

The immediate ramifications will be trivial, at least compared to poor Americans dying in droves and in agony for want of medical treatment.

For America, this is less a catastrophe than an embarrassing inconvenience.

The catastrophe belongs to a Republican Party which will rightly be blamed for once again using terrorist tactics, as with the debt ceiling crisis of 2011, to challenge the authority of the first black President.

When he was Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, reckoned that this brand of nuclear brinksmanship was smart politics. The ensuing mid-term elections were a disaster for the Republicans, as no doubt they will be for them in November next year. They know this, but as with Samson, history’s first suicide bomber, damaging the enemy is paramount regardless of the personal cost.

Given that Clinton was in fact the first electric pink President, it would be too crude to pin the GOP’s recent collapse into nihilistic oppositionalism purely on gutter racism. Yet their intransigence has scaled such maniacal heights under Obama that you cannot avoid the obvious assumption. This vista of a political movement continually seeking displacement activities, as steam valves to release the pressure of suppressing the urge to scream “uppity n*****” , bubbles unceasingly away beneath the pond.

On the surface, meanwhile, the flaw in the Constitution becomes ever more apparent. In its creators’ phobia of the tyranny of which Lincoln and Obama have been accused (for extending the right to pursue liberty from slavery and a malign insurance industry respectively) lay the seeds of the paralysis blooming like a triffid in Washington today.

A tricameral system designed to dilute power by spreading it between legislature (House and Senate) and executive (President), and overladen with checks and balances, relies on respect for the will of the people. When the electorate produces the ultimate check by matching a Democratic Senate and President to a Republican House, that split decision dictates a duty to compromise.

This the Republicans – or that congressional tranche who are either extremists or terrified of inviting a primary challenge by offending the Tea Party – simply will not countenance. The current GOP makes Mrs Thatcher at her “no, no, no” worst look like the most mimsyishly consensus-seeking politician in Scandinavia. If Obama sponsored the Deification of Ronald Reagan Act, the GOP would reject it. If he introduced the Abolition of All Tax For Billionaires Act, it would cite this as further evidence of his unreconstructed Marxism, and try to filibuster it to extinction.

Speaking of which brings us to the one gleam of hilarity to light up this latest reprisal of the Republican Party’s macabre dance of death. Technically, since the relevant vote was in the House of Representatives, Senator Ted Cruz’s speech of last week was not a filibuster, and it certainly did little to invoke Jimmy Stewart’s heroic mega-waffle in Mr Smith Goes To Washington. Nonetheless, he addressed the Senate for three hours short of a day.

a very different sort of eye candy. speaking only for myself. a few dead illegal immigrants

Something I would like to see far more of.

The bad news is that some were saved from the deep.

Hey … ok. Reads harsh but I never said I was entirely civilized.
More important tho, Italy does not need any more life forms of this type. They already have a slew of them and they hardly fit in, as many of you will already be aware.  And of course there’s another benefit of this happy event.  There’s now that many fewer ovem that will reproduce.
And that can only be a good thing.
What?  The world needs more?

And for those who survived?

Next stop

There’s the signpost up ahead.

Welcome to Britain !

Dramatic moment African immigrant survivor of Lampedusa boat sinking is plucked to safety as it is revealed the captain had been deported from Italy before

· Up to 300 migrants now feared dead after the boat sank off Lampedusa

· 111 bodies pulled from the water so far another 200 people are missing

· Victims include two pregnant women and three young children

· Disaster occurred when the boat’s motor stopped working

· A fire started to attract passing ships quickly spread across wooden vessel

· Passengers moved to one side to avoid the blaze causing ship to capsize
· Bodies fished from the water were laid out along the quayside

Around 300 African migrants are now feared dead after their boat capsized off the coast of Italy.
image

At least 111 bodies have been pulled from the water so far - with another 200 people reported missing.

Today the Italian coast guard released dramatic pictures of some of the lucky survivors of the tragedy, being hauled to safety.

According to Italy’s Interior Minister Angelino Alfano the ship’s captain, a 35-year-old Tunisian man, had been deported from Italy in April this year. He is currently being held under arrest.

Two pregnant women and three children - including a three-year-old boy and two-year-old girl - are among the victims.

Witnesses described ‘a cemetery in the sea’ as scores of lifeless bodies floated in waters off the Mediterranean island.

According to Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, the ship began taking on water during the night after the motor was cut as it neared Conigli island off Lampedusa, a tiny speck of an island.

Usually smugglers have mobiles or satellite phones to call for help when they near shore or run into trouble, but this time they didn’t.

Instead, someone on board set fire to a piece of material to attract the attention of passing ships, only to have the fire spread to the ship itself.

Oh damn if this doesn’t get funnier by the minute.
Hey … maybe the basis for a new sit-com?
Any ideas for titles?

Ah, haha. LOL! It gets even funnier.

The passengers all moved to one side to avoid the fire, flipping the ship and spilling hundreds of men, women and children into the sea, he said.

About 15,000 reached Italy and Malta - 13,200 and 1,800 respectively - by sea last year, the UNHCR says. Thousands more are believed to have arrived this year.

Calling the deaths of migrants ‘an endless tragedy,’ Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said: ‘The rescue operation began immediately but it is getting more difficult because now the weather is getting colder, they don’t know how to swim, they don’t know where to go.’

Migrants who arrive in Italy are allowed to apply for asylum. Many of them are ordered to leave the country but often slip away to become illegal immigrants in Italy or elsewhere in the European Union.

Italy has pressed the European Union for more help to fight the crisis which it says concerns the whole bloc.

‘This is not an Italian drama, this is a European drama,’ Alfano said. ‘Lampedusa has to be considered the frontier of Europe, not the frontier of Italy.’

In a separate incident today, around 200 migrants were reportedly escorted to the port of Syracuse on the island of Sicily, when their vessel encountered difficulties five miles off the coast.

It is the second fatal shipwreck this week in the area, following the death of 13 migrants who drowned off nearby Ragusa.

Over the past ten years, 6,200 migrants have died during the perilous crossing.

Ruthless human traffickers have been known to force migrants to jump into the sea, to be rescued by passing trawlers.

In this way they save on fuel and avoid the threat of the Italian authorities.

But fishermen have grown tired of abandoning their catch to ferry hundreds of people to shore.

During the summer, calm seas have seen the number of landings on Lampedusa soar, turning the island into an unofficial refugee camp.

slightly different twist on the never ending gypsy curse.

I recall a month or two back when I said I was sooooo tired of the Traveller/Gypsy/Roma thing that seems to happen everyday, that I was going to stop or at least restrict the number of posts on the issue.  But lately, I have posted a few due to the nature of the articles, as I thought they stood out from the rest by some small degree.  Well, this one stands out by being way different from how they are usually reported, although yesterdays post and video of the Irish horse racer (killers) was by far way different from any other post I’ve done on that sorry and tired subject.

Which reminds me.  I simply must post a comment made by Wardmamma4 on that article from yesterday. Although it has nothing to do with this particular story I am about to share, it could easily apply to this as well.

Awful people - and I hear that K is becoming a ‘party’ drug - it would be nice if those people simply killed themselves but they almost always kill innocents while merrily they go along free to create havoc and mayhem where ever they go. I’d talk about the cost of the horses and taking care of them - but obviously these people steal most of what they ‘use’.

The headline in the hard copy version read as follows.

ROMA GANGS USE NO FRILLS FLIGHTS FOR CRIME SPREES

The budget flight crime wave: Romanian pickpocketing gangs use low-cost airlines to target cities and fly home in time for tea

· Europol director Rob Wainwright says the gangs are active across Europe
· Exploit low-cost airlines by targeting city and getting ‘back in time for tea’
· He said police cooperation is needed to halt the crime wave

By Chris Greenwood

No-frills airlines and Europe’s free travel rules are being exploited by Romanian gangs to target Britain, it was revealed yesterday.
Up to 240 crime networks have been identified in the country by Europol, the European criminal intelligence agency.

Its director Rob Wainwright said crooks are using low-cost airlines to target cities for one-day sprees.  Thieves, credit card fraudsters and pickpockets buy cheap tickets to fly in and out in just a few hours.  As a result police are almost powerless to identify those responsible.

An estimated 68,000 Romanians live in Britain, but there have been 28,000 arrests of Romanian people for serious offenses in the past five years.

Mr Wainwright said his agency was facing ‘petty criminals operating across multiple jurisdictions’.

He added Romanian and Bulgarian offenders are responsible for 90 per cent of all card-skimming in Europe.

‘BECOMING MUCH MORE PREVALENT’

‘We have this travelling criminal gang phenomenon that has become much more prevalent in the last three or four years; gangs from Lithuania, gangs from Poland, gangs from Romania that are operating in 20 or more European countries,’ he added.

‘They fly on low-cost airlines, do a few hits in one city and get back in time for tea. It’s very difficult for local police to respond.’
Experts think gangs have divided Europe into two, along a rough line from *Gdansk in Poland to Lisbon in Portugal.

Romanian gangs control the north, including Britain, Bulgarians the south.
Romanian criminals are specialists in pickpocketing and card-skimming, in which devices fixed to cash machines steal card details, they say.
The information, combined with a PIN recorded by a hidden camera, is used to drain a victim’s account.

Often data is used by accomplices in countries that do not require security chips, such as the US, Canada and Asia. This summer, police blamed Roma gipsies who were living rough on London’s Park Lane for a surge in begging, pickpocketing and shoplifting.

In one case a shoplifter was found to be a notorious Romanian criminal wanted for more than 60 offences including kidnap and armed robbery.

Unedited version @ the DM here

The words used in the article, “more prevalent”, are not empty words by any means.  Some French ministers as reported here, are trying to take a stand and are ready they say to restrict and deport.  Of some interest btw, is the fact that one minister has publicly stated that these people are not able to fit in with French culture and society and see no hope in them doing so.  It remains to be seen of course, what measures the left will take to try and block deportations.
There is absolutely no question at all in any country that hosts these people, that the general populations do not favor them and would prefer they go away. They also favor deportation as well as restrictions on their immigration to their countries.  But hey ... those are simply the peasants, the bigots and raaaacists, the little folks; and who listens to them anyway?

still nothing

golly, the government is still mostly shut down for another day. All these parks and public places are closed down, seemingly out of spite. It’s not like the government hasn’t had to go on fiscal furlough before; they’ve done it something like 17 times before. But this time, pResident soggy diaper is going to make us all suffer.

who cares?

Fuck ‘em all. Leave the government shut down. Until the ChiCom hordes come screaming over the hill, it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference to me.

And all those “non-essential” workers not working? Hey, how about ... you’re all fired. Because obviously we can do without you. Buh-bye.

Meanwhile, I had a poor experience as a bowling sub last night. I showed up on time, ready to rock. Flubbed the first two frames, but then threw another 9 strikes in a row for a 248. Which means I delivered 63 points over my book average. And they still lost. And not because the other team was on fire. Ok, you don’t want to compete tonight? Fine by me. So I threw a 129 for game 2.  They kind of got the message and decided to try for game 3, wherein I rolled a 190 and we won by lots, but just 5 pins shy of taking wood.  No, I didn’t muff game 2 completely on purpose. But I wasn’t trying so hard cuz I was grumpy, since they came to me in frame 5 of game 1, when I’d only thrown a turkey, and told me I was going to carry the team all night. Um, wanna bet?

And the Obabacare online fiasco? Like I give a crap. You too can hurry up and go online to the worst designed web page ever, to have every last remaining bit of your private information hacked by anyone and everyone. I’m not signing up for it. Nor am I paying their damn penalties. Um, taxes. Wait, how can I be charged a tax for something I haven’t purchased? I can’t; taxes are percentage based things. Fees are flat amount things, as are fines. And CJ Roberts says Obamacare is a tax! Does this mean he’s wrong? Yes! Overturned!!

Another Author Gone

Tom Clancy, best selling author, Dead at 66

image

Celebrated author Tom Clancy, who became famous for best-sellers like “The Hunt for Red October” and “Patriot Games,” died on Tuesday. He was 66.

Clancy died at Johns Hopkins Hospital after a brief illness, the Baltimore Sun reports.

David Shanks, an executive personally involved in publishing all of Clancy’s books, released a statement saying: ”I’m deeply saddened by Tom’s passing.  He was a consummate author, creating the modern-day thriller, and was one of the most visionary storytellers of our time. I will miss him dearly and he will be missed by tens of millions of readers worldwide.”

Born in Baltimore, Md., Clancy first hit the best-seller lists in 1984 with “The Hunt for Red October.” He sold the manuscript to the first publisher he tried, the Naval Institute Press, which had never bought original fiction.

By a stroke of luck, President Reagan got “Red October” as a Christmas gift and quipped at a dinner that he was losing sleep because he couldn’t put the book down, a statement Clancy later said helped put him on the New York Times best-seller list.

A string of successful books followed, including “Red Storm Rising,” “Patriot Games,” “The Cardinal of the Kremlin,” “Clear and Present Danger,” “The Sum of All Fears,” and “Without Remorse.”

Many of Clancy’s works were turned into blockbuster movies starring the likes of Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The latest, based on his desk-jockey CIA hero Jack Ryan, is set for release later this year. Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Pine, “Jack Ryan: Shadow One” is set for release in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

the longer the Obama presidency continues, the more America’s status as a superpower ebbs away.

I thought our readers in the USA might be interested in one Brit’s take on the current crises in the states.

He apparently doesn’t care much for O.

I guess that puts him on our side.  I have read I should tell you, one or two pundits who believe that the president actually has the majority of us on his side in this matter, and in the end will come out on top.

We’ll see.

US government shutdown: Barack Obama is presiding over the end of America’s superpower status

By Con Coughlin

For a country that is supposed to be the most powerful in the world, the fact that Americans have today woken up to find large swathes of their nation closed for business is humiliating.

Thanks to President Barack Obama obduracy over his flagship healthcare policy, Democrats and Republicans have failed to reach agreement in Congress on the federal budget, forcing the US Government to close down for the first time in 17 years, with around 700,000 federal workers being placed on indefinite leave.

While the White House insists that essential areas of the government, such as the military, will continue to function, the shut down represents yet a further blow to the prestige of the Obama administration at a time when it is still reeling from its inept handling of the recent Syrian crisis.

There was a time not so long ago when the world looked to America for both political and economic leadership. But now that can no longer be taken for granted thanks to Mr Obama’s inability to provide decisive leadership on either front.

Republicans rightly argue that by pressing ahead with Obamacare before the implications of the programme have been properly assessed risks adding to America’s debt mountain at a time when the American economy is still recovering from the biggest economic crisis in recent history.

The emergence of Russia, meanwhile, as the main power broker in the Syria crisis has severely damaged America’s standing as a major global player.

In short, the longer the Obama presidency continues, the more America’s status as a superpower ebbs away.

Pretty damn sick!

Travellers leave horse dead on the side of an Irish country road after crashing it into the back of a car while racing it

Travellers had been racing the horse on the N8 road, connecting Cork with Dublin, it is claimed

They crashed the animal into the back of a parked Volkswagen Polo

They then left the horse to die on the side of the road - with blood pouring from its head, neck and front legs

Travellers are believed to have been ‘sulky’ drivers, racing the horse from a two-wheeled racing cart

By Sophie Jane Evans

This is the distressing moment Irish travellers are believed to have left a horse to die on the side of a country road after crashing it into the back of a parked car while racing it.

The travellers had been racing the brown and white animal on the busy N8 road, connecting Cork with Dublin, when they smashed into the stationary black Volkswagen Polo, it is claimed.

They then left the horse to die on the side of the road - with blood pouring from its head, neck and front legs.

The group are believed to have been ‘sulky’ drivers - members of the Irish travelling community who race horse and carts along busy main roads.

A sulky is a lightweight two-wheeled racing cart, so named because of the solitary confinement of the driver.

The traditional sport has provoked much controversy - with campaigners arguing that sulky racing compromises both the safety of pedestrians and drivers and the welfare of animals.

An eye-witness, who had been travelling along the busy road - which connects with the M7 - captured the distressing scene on camera at around noon yesterday.

image

‘I heard in the town that a sulky driver crashed the horse into a parked car - as you can see in the photographs,’ said the woman, who wishes to remain unnamed.

‘The horse was abandoned with a broken neck. It was still alive.’

She added: ‘Sulky racing is a common sight on country roads, often with young teenagers driving the horses.’

Earlier this year, five men were jailed for racing horses through commuter traffic on one of Ireland’s busiest roads in May 2012.

Footage of the race - which left chaos in its wake - went viral after being uploaded to social networking websites.

finally … knife killer gets time. in prison hospital. so again, no justice.

Here we go again. How many times is this?
Oh hell. Anyone still counting?

I think when shrinks or whoever it may be, that allow scum like this to be free, should themselves be given a taste of what is done to the victims. Really.
There would surely be far less of this sort of thing. Just makes the blood boil. Not that things would be better if the black scum had found an older person, but damn. The kid here was only 16.  Jeez. Have trouble getting my head around that.

Take a look.

Psychiatric patient stabbed schoolgirl, 16, to death on bus in random attack after being released from prison despite fears about his mental health

Phillip Simelane has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Christina Edkins
Sentenced to be detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act
23-year-old stabbed Christina through the heart as she sat down on a bus
Simelane then walked calmly off the bus and was arrested 100 yards away
Criminal released from jail unsupervised despite concerns over mental health
Had convictions for violent crime including threatening his mother with knife
Christina’s family say authorities could have prevented her brutal killing.

By Martin Robinson

A knife-obsessed psychiatric patient will be detained for life in a mental hospital after he admitted stabbing a teenager to death as she took the bus to school to take a GCSE mock exam.

Phillip Simelane, 23, today pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Christina Edkins, 16, having plunged a blade into her heart in a motiveless killing during the Birmingham rush hour.

The killer, who had a string of violent crime convictions including threatening his own mother with a knife, calmly walked off the double decker after fatally stabbing the teenager as she sat down.

Today it emerged he had been jailed three times last year but despite the authorities having concerns about his mental health he was released at Christmas without any supervision.

Christina’s bereft family have said that had Simelane been monitored the killing of the ‘bright and beautiful’ 16-year-old would ‘never have happened’.

Mental problems and violent behavior?  Delete the SOBs.  Or use them for medical experiments instead of cute furry animals. Why not?  They are totally worthless and a drag on taxpayers.  Besides mommy, who’d miss them?

You can take em outta the jungle but can’t remove the jungle from them.  There are exceptions of course. Not too many tho. Maybe in another 1,000 yrs.
Hmmm. Not sure about that time frame. Might take a bit longer.

Rural Bowling

I was gonna say Redneck, but come on.

I’m watching these guys at Greed League last night, playing with their smart phones. They’ve got a couple of pictures on one of them, and they’re all passing the phone around to look.

“Wow, check out the rack on this one!”

“Nah, the other one was better. Not quite as big, but better shape.”

“Yeah, but did you see the tips? They really stuck out! Like icicles!”

“Here, check this one out. It’s got to be a 40, maybe a 42”

“You know, you can judge from the size of the head. They’re all about 8” across. So I’d say that one was a 40 at most, probably only a 38.”

“Ok, but still, that’s a helluva rack!”

Men. They’re all pigs. Right?

Wrong.

They were looking at pictures of deer.

more eye candy from the left …

I rather enjoy highlighting left wing eye candy.

For Americans who do not know, the “old” Labour Party was very, very left. More so I think than the current one.  It’s just that this woman is way further to the left of them.

Her name is Christine Blower.  She is the head of NUT, which is the National Union of Teachers. She is very union of course.

A headline in this morning’s paper referred to her as the “Strike Happy NUT Boss”

If I can ever figure out a way to use my Loony Tune logo, she’d be on my list to go inside it.

Christine Blower: The NUT general secretary has an ‘entrenched socialist agenda’

Wearing a different Easter hat for each day of NUT national conference, Christine Blower attracts attention - and a few sniggers.

But her critics point out that there’s little to laugh about over her entrenched socialist agenda.

She has been pursuing calls for strike action for years and was described by a former NUT general secretary, Doug McAvoy, as “to the left of Old Labour”.

Mr McAvoy warned that she was “certainly the biggest threat to the stability of the union for the past decade and beyond” when she attempted - and failed - to replace him as general secretary in 1999.

He even went as far as writing to NUT members, warning them that Miss Blower was someone “for whom strike action is the only solution to problems”.

He added: “She is controlled and supported by a group of extreme Left organisations including Militant, the Socialist Workers’ Party, the Campaign for a Democratic and Fighting Union, and the Socialist Teachers’ Alliance.”

Ain’t she sweet?

Bang Bang

h/t to Vilmar, who today posted on the Bira Gun without even realizing it. The Gardner Gun is Bira’s daddy.

An old cure for the problem of having too much ammo on hand

The Gardner Gun, the greatest little machinegun that ever wasn’t

Whatever happens, we have got
The Maxim Gun, and they have not

Once upon a time, in the early Industrial Revolution but before the Age of Steel, slightly after the dawn of metallic firearms cartridges but before the onset of properly drawn cases, there were machines that were guns. But not machine guns. In a world in love with wheels, camshafts, gears, belts, and reciprocating assemblies, these not-quite automatic weapons were a cross between a rifle battery and a sewing machine. You’ve heard of the Gatling Gun, a cumbersome, finicky, multiple barreled, usually horse drawn affair. You may also have heard of the Hotchkiss and the Nordenfeldt, two other mechanical repeaters of that era. By the time Hiram Maxim got around to inventing the properly fully automatic belt fed machine gun a few years later, the era was over. But for about a decade, 1874 to 1885-ish, the hand cranked multiple barreled pintel mounted repeating gun was king of the world. And then faded into forgotten obscurity, although the Bira Gun came late to the party, was made entirely by hand, and never actually put to the test of combat.

The problem with all of these weapons was solved by Maxim and his belt feed. You simply couldn’t feed these guns cartridges fast enough to maximize their usefulness. And nearly all of them were fed from the top, where a big cartridge hopper rather gets in the way of your gunner’s aim.

The Gardner Gun, patented in 1874, solved at least 3 of the problems inherent in the Gatling Gun. It weighed a whole lot less, so it was easier to carry around. It had a very simple mechanism with about 6 moving parts per barrel, so it jammed less and was easier to clear when it did jam. It was water cooled, so you could maintain a high rate of fire without having to build a carousel battery with half a dozen or more barrels. And it probably cost a whole lot less too.

Here’s the patent drawing for the Gardner Gun’s internals:

Kudos to you if you immediately notice the similarity between this weapon and an automobile engine. Because they’re nearly the same thing. Four stroke engine, four stroke gun. Intake, compression, power, exhaust. Load, fire, extract, eject. The operating crank is the crankshaft and the bolts are the connecting rods and pistons, and the chamber is the combustion chamber. Exchange cartridges for gasoline, add a couple of valves and a spark plug, and it’s an engine. Well, not exactly, and exactly backwards in operation, but mighty similar nonetheless.

Gardner guns could be made with as many or as few barrels as you wanted, from 1 to 10, though 2 was the most common. Make them in brass or in steel. Invented in America, but a dud in our market, Gardner took his stuff to Europe and sold lots of them.

Cartridge most often used was the Army round of the day, the .45-70. Rate of fire was entirely dependent on your ability to feed the thing, and on the quality of your cartridges. Call it 300-500 rounds per minute, which is just as fast as the current Browning M2 fires.

Dependable? Tests run by the British Army found that the Gardner ran 16,754 shots before wearing down, with only 2 dozen jams the whole while. Pretty good for a chunk of brass milled to the nearest 100th of an inch.

Oh, and these things are completely legal. Because it ISN’T an automatic weapon. And you can buy new ones. And then all you need to do is get out your reloading press and churn out buckets and buckets of .45-70 ammo. Black powder powered, paper patched 500 grain lead bullets. Have fun!

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
