Dark Lightning Discovered

Thunderstorms contain ‘dark lightning,’ invisible pulses of powerful radiation

A lightning bolt is one of nature’s most over-the-top phenomena, rarely failing to elicit at least a ping of awe no matter how many times a person has witnessed one. With his iconic kite-and-key experiments in the mid-18th century, Benjamin Franklin showed that lightning is an electrical phenomenon, and since then the general view has been that lightning bolts are big honking sparks no different in kind from the little ones generated by walking in socks across a carpeted room.

But scientists recently discovered something mind-bending about lightning: Sometimes its flashes are invisible, just sudden pulses of unexpectedly powerful radiation. It’s what Joseph Dwyer, a lightning researcher at the Florida Institute of Technology, has termed dark lightning.

Unknown to Franklin but now clear to a growing roster of lightning researchers and astronomers is that along with bright thunderbolts, thunderstorms unleash sprays of X-rays and even intense bursts of gamma rays, a form of radiation normally associated with such cosmic spectacles as collapsing stars. The radiation in these invisible blasts can carry a million times as much energy as the radiation in visible lightning, but that energy dissipates quickly in all directions rather than remaining in a stiletto-like lightning bolt.

A Belated April Fool’s?

I’ve had fun in the past on a couple other blogs with the monthly magazine released by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. In their infinite wisdom, they named their publication

the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

and refer to it by the acronym. In short (ahem), it’s PNAS magazine.

image

And I’ve noted lately in another blog, how filling up the hungry maw of the ever hungry 24/7 News Cycle often leads to news stories that seem to be nothing more than the blatantly obvious ... which is wryly amusing ... but sometimes things seem to go a bit too far.

Like this one. A big long one in this month’s PNAS magazine, on big penises. Hey, it’s science! Show respect!

Penis size interacts with body shape and height to influence male attractiveness

Abstract

Compelling evidence from many animal taxa indicates that male genitalia are often under postcopulatory sexual selection for characteristics that increase a male’s relative fertilization success. There could, however, also be direct precopulatory female mate choice based on male genital traits. Before clothing, the nonretractable human penis would have been conspicuous to potential mates. This observation has generated suggestions that human penis size partly evolved because of female choice. Here we show, based upon female assessment of digitally projected life-size, computer-generated images, that penis size interacts with body shape and height to determine male sexual attractiveness. Positive linear selection was detected for penis size, but the marginal increase in attractiveness eventually declined with greater penis size (i.e., quadratic selection). Penis size had a stronger effect on attractiveness in taller men than in shorter men. There was a similar increase in the positive effect of penis size on attractiveness with a more masculine body shape (i.e., greater shoulder-to-hip ratio). Surprisingly, larger penis size and greater height had almost equivalent positive effects on male attractiveness. Our results support the hypothesis that female mate choice could have driven the evolution of larger penises in humans. More broadly, our results show that precopulatory sexual selection can play a role in the evolution of genital traits.

It took a team of four scientists to do the research. Amazingly, it was not the team of Wang, Peters, Johnson, and John Thomas, but the team of Wong, Peters, Mautz, and Jennions. Translating the above abstract of their research from Scientese to English, with the aid of an analytical third-party peer review article that goes to reasonable, but not painful, length to understand the thrust of their reasoning ... and we get the earth shattering news that Chicks Big On Dicks, and the 24/7 news cycle is once again satisfied. But never satiated.

Science proves women like men with bigger penises

The human male possesses the Italian designer faucet of penises. They’re pretty big, the biggest of any primate’s relative to body size. And they’re showy, too, right out there, front and center on our upright bodies (i.e., they don’t retract), as if they were meant to be seen as part of the décor. Why?

A study released today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) offers an explanation: Women are attracted to penises, and the bigger the better.

“Penis size does affect attractiveness,” lead author Brian Mautz, a University of Ottawa post-doctoral researcher said in an NBCNews.com interview.

Past research has seemed to indicate that women, as a group, are drawn to larger male members. But those results have been disputed as sexist, or scientifically flawed, or both.

So Mautz and his team, working at the Australian National University, designed an experiment in hopes of settling the controversy. They created 49 unique, computer-generated, nude, life-sized male figures. Each figure varied in three traits: height, shoulder-hip ratio and flaccid penis size.

The researchers then displayed all the figures to 105 Australian women with an average age of 26. The women, who were not told which traits varied, were asked to rate the attractiveness of the figures as sexual partners on a scale of 1-7. The women were alone in the room and their responses were anonymous.

As past studies have shown, women prefer tall men with broad shoulders and narrow hips, like an Olympic swimmer. But when Mautz controlled for those variables, it turned out that penis size (overall length and girth) was about as important as stature.

“As you increase penis size, the amount of attractiveness scores gets bigger” in a linear fashion, he explained, until 7.6 centimeters, or 3 inches. After three inches, attractiveness still increased, but in smaller increments.

Not only were the ratings higher, but the women also spent more time gazing at the generously endowed figures, a sign they preferred looking at them as opposed to figures with smaller penises.

Women with a greater body mass index held stronger preferences for big penises. And size was most critical in tall men, perhaps, Mautz speculated, because “a taller guy must have a disproportionately larger penis to sort of make it clear” he’s endowed.

So there you have it. You would assume that such a study would also point out the statistically most popular male height given that they already knew the most popular male body shape. A little cock-up perhaps, or else the researchers just wanted to stay true to the thesis in hand.

Or as Mautz puts it in his paper, “Our results support the hypothesis that female mate choice could have driven the evolution of larger penises in humans.”

Of course, this is the 21st century. Most men wear pants – or at the very least, kilts. Mautz was quick to soothe men by saying that his study did not include other proven mate choice factors like money, intelligence, hair or whether a guy drives a 1997 Chevy Astro.

Hey, how about a 1997 Saturn? LOL

I am not ignoring my mail

I do not have direct access to my blog email right now. I expect to be able to get it going again sometime next week.

I can make a big effort, move several parts and some wires upstairs, get the old PC running again ... and perhaps be able to download the mail. Perhaps. Maybe. I don’t know if I’ll be able to send any.

So if you’ve sent in a “register me as a member” email, or put a couple bucks in the tip jar, or sent me great links, or any other communication, I am not ignoring you. I’ll get to it. Please be patient.

Season Highs

We had a very good night in Cheap League. We won all 7, handily. That puts us just over 50% after 30 of 34 weeks; the upper part of the middle of the pack. Not too bad, considering the problems we’ve had.

I bowled my best series of the season (so far), rolling a 675. I was super focused and quite lucky in Game 1, pulling a 267, which ties the best game I’ve thrown this season on either league. I did a couple of dumb things and left a few opens in Game 2 for a “poor” 174, 10 under my average. I got back in the groove for Game 3 and rolled a 234. So I was 123 over for the night. Nice. Maybe nice enough to win me the Strike Ball for next week, but not nice enough to get one of those 140 Over awards from USBC.

And I might have team, or at least 3/4 of one, for summer league. Which is always funner.

paki killer gets his while in prison. too bad he’s still alive. bravo the cons who hurt him.

As many here have seen, I’ve been preoccupied with numerous personal matters and my posts have been on the sparse side of late.

I don’t check my emails every day, but I don’t ignore them either.  So how in the heck I missed this story to share is beyond me.

H/T to our friend LyndonB, who sent this to me way back in Feb.
I ran across it tonight while clearing out the inbox.  Better late than never cos I think this one needs to be shared, and I’d encourage you to read the link for the background HERE

Oh and btw, we are not allowed to refer to them as “PAKIS”, cos that’s raaaaacist.

You might not be familiar with the story of Kriss Donald. Essentially he was a white Scottish kid that was kidnapped and beaten to death by a gang of Pakis. It hardly got a mention in the news especially the BBC. After all only white people as you know are racists! Anyway looks like some of the cons thought he should get some payback!  LyndonB

Kriss Donald (2 July 1988 – 15 March 2004) was a Scottish fifteen-year-old white male who was kidnapped, tortured and murdered in Glasgow in 2004 by a gang of men of Pakistani descent, some of whom fled to Pakistan after the crime.Daanish Zahid, Imran Shahid, Zeeshan Shahid, and Mohammed Faisal Mustaq were later found guilty of racially motivated murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.[4][3] A fifth participant in the crime was convicted of racially motivated violence and jailed for five years.
The case, which featured the first ever conviction for racially motivated murder in Scotland, is cited as an example of the lack of attention the media and society give to white sufferers of racist attacks compared to that given to ethnic minorities, with organisations such as the BBC later admitting failing to cover the case sufficiently. It is also suggested the crime demonstrates how society has been forced to redefine racism so as to no longer

Race-hate killer Imran ‘Baldy’ Shahid rushed to hospital after being attacked in prison gym

IMRAN “Baldy” Shahid, is serving a minimum of 25 years in Kilmarnock prison for the brutal murder of 15-year-old Kris Donald.

RACE-HATE killer Imran “Baldy” Shahid was rushed to hospital last night after being attacked in a prison gym.

Shahid, 36, who kidnapped and killed Kriss Donald, 15, is serving a minimum 25 years for the brutal murder of the teenager.

A Kilmarnock Prison source said: “This has been planned for weeks.

“Because the Celtic game was on, the cons reckoned there’d be less supervision in the gym. They were right.

“An extra 10 boys went in there instead of watching the match to get Baldy.

“He was doing weights and the next minute someone ran over with a 15kg bar and hit him over the head.

“Then another 15 prisoners started grabbing bars and laying into him.”

The source claimed Shahid was “in a bad way”.

He added: “Five lifers who are in for over 20 years each decided they didn’t want to see his face every day.

“No one would go up to him on their own because he is a hell of a size.

“He is strutting about like an untouchable, getting more privileges than anyone else, and people had just had enough of it.

“He was demanding better food than everyone else. Other Muslims are getting half a chicken but he was demanding a whole chicken every day – and he got it.

“He is a bully and deserved everything he got.”

A prison spokeswoman said it was a serious assault and that Shahid was in a serious but stable condition.

That Sucking Sound As Sales Evaporate

Windows 8 blamed for biggest PC shipment plunge ever

Global PC shipments fell by 13.9 percent in the first quarter of 2013, and according to analyst firm IDC , Windows 8 could very well be the reason.

On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that 76.3 million PC units shipped during the most recent financial period, marking the biggest decline since the IDC began publishing quarterly numbers 19 years ago.

“The reaction to Windows 8 is real,” Jay Chou, an IDC analyst, said to The Wall Street Journal.

Increased demand for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have also played a role in this decline, but Windows 8 hasn’t helped. IDC continued to say that the OS actually contributed to the slump, saying that Windows 8 devices come with “features that don’t excel in a tablet mode” and take away from traditional PC usage.

PC demand for business users has declined as well. According to Chou, companies now buy computers every four or five years as opposed to every three years. Estimates for global PC shipments may fall even lower than the already-grim 1.3 percent contraction for 2013, IDC told WSJ.

“At this point, unfortunately, it seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market,” said Bob O’Donnell, IDC Program Vice President, Clients and Displays. “While some consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the radical changes to the UI, removal of the familiar Start button, and the costs associated with touch have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices.”

Some folks like it, but most don’t. And even if you could afford a touch screen monitor - regular sized models appear to cost 2 to 4 times more than a new PC - you’ll still be using it in vertical mode as a desktop. Instead of on your lap, horizontal mode, like you’d use a tablet. The OS is perhaps a few years ahead of the tech ... and everyone is expecting a HUGE OS release this year (aka Windows 9) that does away with the thing, and gives back the Start button and makes everything more W7-ish. July’s SP1 release is already seen as merely a band-aid over a sucking chest wound.

The Windows Blue update expected this summer promises several enhancements, including the ability to view more apps on the screen at once and easier access to settings, but it may not be enough.

Missouri Sells Out

Highway patrol gave feds Missouri weapon permits data
AGAIN

Oh, but the police are your friends! My ass.

Missouri’s database of concealed weapon permits was twice given to federal authorities investigating Social Security disability fraud in a move that has enraged lawmakers already angry over potential abuses in a new driver’s licensing system.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Col. Ron Replogle was questioned for nearly an hour this morning by the Senate Appropriations Committee after he revealed to Chairman Kurt Schaefer yesterday that his agency had turned over the data.

The delivery of the information to federal authorities has become a huge issue for lawmakers since they began raising questions about new driver’s licensing procedures. A lawsuit from Stoddard County challenged the procedures that require all supporting documents — including certificates granting concealed weapon privileges — to be scanned and retained.

In November 2011 and again in January, Replogle said, an agent of the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General received discs with the data. Each time, the agent was unable to read the encryption format and destroyed the discs, Replogle said.

“They said no names were retrieved,” Replogle told the committee this morning. “They do not have those names. They did not disseminate that information, and all that information has been destroyed. We have asked for that documentation of what has happened.”

The data was turned over because the Office of Inspector General is a law enforcement agency, Replogle said. It was done by a mid-level supervisor at the patrol. Replogle said he was not informed of the transfer until four weeks ago.

The intention was to cross-check the names on the concealed carry list with the agency’s list of those with disabilities attributed to mental illness to find possible evidence of fraud in the system.

New procedures are being put in place to make sure a similar release of data does not happen again without his approval, Replogle said.

Really? Well fuck him. His approval isn’t worth a dog turd sandwich. It’s against the law. Period.

State law bars the Department of Revenue from implementing the federal Real ID Act. The procedures adopted for Missouri licenses mirror Real ID Act requirements. State law also mandates that concealed weapons permit data is confidential.

Gov. Jay Nixon has denied that concealed weapons permits were turned over to a “magical database” for federal agents to “mess with” Missourians. The requests from Social Security were revealed yesterday in an appropriations committee hearing, and Replogle gave incomplete information to Schaefer yesterday.

“There is nothing magical about the name Real ID,” Schaefer said after this morning’s hearing. “It is the things that go along with it, the giving up of personal data, the subjecting yourself to identity theft without any due process of law before that information is given up.”

For weeks, he said, the department has denied it was implementing Real ID or turning over concealed weapons permit information.

“What we now know is we were lied to about the process, how it is implemented, how it is funded, and we were lied to about the fact that the Department of Motor Vehicles or the state of Missouri did or did not give out a list of concealed carry holders to the federal government,” Schaefer said.

Don’t put your faith in the state government either. Even if they seem steadfast up at the top, somewhere in their pyramid there will be a filthy weasel like this guy. And all it takes is one.

*REMINDER: Missouri is the same state that issued a report naming tea partiers, libertarians, and anyone who flew the military authorized Gadsden Flag as potential domestic terrorists.

More over at RedState; including a taped radio show that gives much more info.

More? http://danaloeschradio.com/exclusive-dhs-plans-backdoor-gun-registration/

Hmm ... what do they call it when the government breaks it’s own laws to enact a policy that the citizens don’t want and nobody ever voted for? Can’t recall right now ... starts with a “c”, sounded like a term for a two door car I think.

kneejerk gun bill moves forward, freedom takes a backseat

RINOS defect to Camp Ayers ...

Controversial gun legislation cleared a key Senate hurdle Thursday, as lawmakers voted 68-31 to start debate on the package which includes expanded background checks and new penalties for gun trafficking.

Senate Democrats, joined by 16 Republicans, were able to overcome an attempted filibuster by GOP senators opposed to the current bill. Those senators could still slow-walk the debate, but the Senate will eventually begin votes on amendments—one of which is considered crucial to winning support for a final vote.

The following is a list of Republican lawmakers who voted to advance the gun legislation in the Senate Thursday:

New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte
Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss
Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn
Maine Sen. Susan Collins
Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake
Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson
Arizona Sen. John McCain
Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker
North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr
North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven
Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham
Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander
Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker
Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey
Nevada Sen. Dean Heller

The following is a list of Democratic lawmakers who voted against advancing gun legislation:

Alaska Sen. Mark Begich
Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor

Do not trust your government to protect your rights. Do not trust the Republicans to protect your rights. Act now and let your voice be heard.

there comes a greening

It was pleasant and delightful on a bright summer’s morn
When the green fields and the meadows were covered with corn
And the blackbirds and thrushes sitting on every green spray
And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day

Spring is springing, at last.

Yesterday the world was brown. Bare ground, naked branches, nature asleep. The forsythias, always the first large bushes to bloom, had just begun to open. Two days of nice warm sunny weather. And then it cooled off and rained last night. Something fierce. Pretty sure we had at least 3 inches of wet. And this morning, while still cool, damp, and rather overcast ... the world is green again. The grass is reviving, the pricker bushes are sending out their red shoots, and the bit of gorse-filled woods we have down the embankment here has suddenly developed a bright pale green tinge. The great heart of nature is starting it’s annual single massive heartbeat, and soon tons of sap will be pushed up through all kinds of solid living wood to burst forth as colorful new garlands to decorate the earth.

It is a good thing.  There should be music ... and so there is

“What’s black and eats bananas?  Half of London,”

I’m not a fan so haven’t a clue who he is. Apparently lots do and darts really is a spectator sport here. Although I fail to see how it’s a sport.  Are ALL games sports?  Is a game of leisure a sport?  Doesn’t matter. That isn’t the topic.
The topic, yawn, is the usual.
But in this case .... it’s pc over the top. Well pc by its nature is always over the top.

Racial jokes are hate crimes now and subject to investigations disciplinary hearings.  Oh yeah, and of course the obligatory I’m sorry if I offended anyone apologies.

‘Voice of darts’ quits over racist ‘jokes’

By Eurosport | World of Sport

Legendary darts announcer Martin Fitzmaurice has quit after being caught on camera telling racist jokes.

Fitzmaurice, whose chanted catchphrase “Let’s… play… darts!” is famous throughout the game, made the offensive comments at an international match between Scotland and England being played in Fife.

The compare had initially said that his comments were just ‘a bit of banter’ but after the scandal blew up he decided to offer his resignation which was accepted.

The British Darts Organisation and the Scottish Darts Association had both condemned Fitzmaurice for his comments which included “jokes” such as “What’s black and eats bananas? Half of London,” and “What’s the difference between a P*** and ET? ET went home.”

“I have offered my resignation and they have accepted it,” Fitzmaurice said.

“I made a mistake. I was having a bit of banter with the crowd.

“What happened took place because I was unaware the camera was on. If I have upset anyone I apologise.

“I’m a bit fed up and I’m upset my family has been brought into this.

“My children have been devastated and things that have been said about me are unbelievable.

“I know what I said was wrong but at the end of the day the damage is being done to the sport by those people writing the filth.

“Anyone who knows about darts should know I have been round a long time and it’s always been good.”

A full enquiry is already taking place into this regrettable incident.

The BDO’s statement when the controversy first emerged read: “The British Darts Organisation apologises unreservedly for the fact that racially offensive comments were made by MC Martin Fitzmaurice at the BDO British Internationals in Scotland.

“The BDO wishes to make it clear that it does not tolerate racism in any shape or form, and a full enquiry is already taking place into this regrettable incident. In accordance with BDO rules on racism, Martin Fitzmaurice has been made fully aware of the seriousness of his actions and will be required to face a disciplinary hearing in front of the BDO Board.”

The BBC also condemned Fitzmaurice: “As someone who has appeared in previous tournaments we have televised we are appalled by the alleged remarks.”

“What’s the difference between a P*** and ET? ET went home.”

I believe P*** might stand for Paki?  Someone from Pakistan. Lyndon?  Is that correct?

In any effing event, it’s god damn true. ET did go home.  What’s the problem with that little gag?  So fuckin what.

“What’s black and eats bananas? Half of London,”

Again. So what?  It’s not that funny anyway but what the heck.  Seems like nobody can say anything anymore least someone somewhere decides it fits the racist mold.  I don’t see where telling a gag like that means you hate the object of the joke. Or even dislike the object.

Have any of you heard any comics, I mean real funny guys who could make you laff minus the bad language I used here, have any of you heard anyone who does dialect anymore?

Recently, a young girl, whose story I just don’t feel like going into now, Tweeted using the term fag. But even worse she suggested that her local pizza place needed to learn English. Especially since they deliver and apparently there’s a problem in translations.  Oooh ... RACIST!

screwed up world.
