I’m beginning to feel like Noah

It’s still raining. 5 days of it now. We’ve had drizzle, we’ve had downpours, we’ve had every kind of rain in between, and multiple thunderstorms too. The only thing we haven’t had is strong winds.

Coming home late last night from work I got caught in such a torrent of a thunderstorm that I could barely see to drive. Being the only car on the local highway at 1am, I chugged along at 35mph with the dashed white line right under me, riding halfway between the lanes. That put my car up on the crown of the road. The lines were the only thing I could see, and the sides of the road were quickly flooded. It rained that hard for at least another hour. Weather Channel was saying we’d get perhaps 1/4”. Phooey, I’m sure we got at least 3” from that downpour alone.

And it’s still drizzling this morning.

Unlike Noah, I’m fresh out of gopher wood, so I had to make due with oak:

doors and hinges from DDC Industries. Quality stuff is never inexpensive.

It took me more than 2 hours to rehang those doors with the spring hinges and adjust them. It’s a fussy job! You need a lot of patience to do this job right, and a set of precision calipers really helps. A jack stand and an extra pair or two of hands wouldn’t hurt either. But I soldiered on alone, and they came out just about perfect. I may have set the spring tension a bit too high ... they’re a bit “catapulty” right now and snap close right smartly. Oh well. It only takes a minute to change the tension.

5 days of rain isn’t going to set any kind of record; I lived through 40+ days of it one year up in Binghamton NY. But this has been 5 days of non-stop rain, all day all night every day. The almost constant beep beep beep of the nanny state’s safety message on the television - “a flood warning has been issued for your area” - has become background noise. After a while you hardly even notice it.

my posts for the day ….

Looking for something else when I found this. Very much worth sharing.

image

Deep in the rainforests of the Indian state of Meghalaya lie some of the most extraordinary pieces of civil engineering in the world. Here, in the depths of the forest, bridges aren’t built - they’re grown. Ancient tree vines and roots stretch across rivers and streams, creating a solid latticework structure that appears too fantastical to be real. The Cherrapunji region is considered to be one of the wettest places on the planet and this is the reason behind the unusual bridges. With Cherrapunji receiving around 15 metres of rain per year, a normal wooden bridge would quickly rot. This is why, 500 years ago, locals began to guide roots and vines from the native Ficus Elastica rubber tree across rivers using hollow bamboo until they became rooted on the opposite side.

And now from the sublime to the ridiculous.

In this surveillance video taken on Sept. 5, 2011 and released by the San Diego Police Dept, a suspect dressed like Gumby is seen telling a convenience store clerk he is being robbed, then fumbling inside the costume as if to pull a gun, dropping 27 cents and leaving. Police say the attempted robbery took place on Monday at a 7-Eleven in Rancho Penasquitos, California.

Chess Problem 9/8/2011

Today’s chess problem does not appear to have a ‘cook’, unlike yesterday’s problem. And no, peiper, it is not a mate-in-one or two. But there is a forced mate. Black is to move and win:

Hint: White has a weak back rank.

Solution tomorrow.

Solution: Again, Black to move and win.

squatters are evicted! Hurray. but they then move to another place. 14 ovem

quick update on squatter story.  They were evicted but ....

Squatters evicted from home of doctor and pregnant wife invade plush new property just 300 yards away

The 14-strong gang left Dr Oliver Cockerell and his wife Kaltun’s new home in London this morning with their faces masked after the couple won a ‘common sense’ court ruling yesterday.

But it didn’t take them long to find a new place to occupy. They holed up in a basement flat down the road, despite it having security shutters up to stop squatters.

Housing Minister Grant Shapps applauded yesterday’s ruling. He said the Government was ‘looking to slam the door on so-called squatters’ rights’ and was

‘consulting’ on whether to make squatting a criminal offence.

UPDATE AND LOTS OF PHOTOS

And didn’t I sarcastically say a week ago that all the powers did was “consult” and “consult” again with nothing done in the end.  Brits just LOVE to “consult.”
And where only some 6 months ago some govt. leech said the law needed to be changed, this guy is suggesting they ‘consult’ to see if this activity is a crime.
Jeeze .... what’s in the water these schmucks are drinking?  The public outcry on this subject is not recent.  But the shit heads who could stop it in its tracks are busy ..... consulting.  When they aren’t busy fiddling expenses.

Imagine coming home and finding 14 verminous louts in your home.  You’re out numbered and have no gun. Damn awful thought.

Edited Sept 8
I feel I have to add this statement to this page even though I did it in the comments that follow. We get a lot of ppl passing through here from the states as well as other countries. Even on a personal note from friends back home, there seems to be little if any awareness as to how little authority the royal family has. Starting with the Queen herself.

On more then one occasion over the years, there have been times when some have mistaken the laws (or what passes for it) and the influence or authority of the royal family on the law.  The Queen may (who knows?) tell the PM privately that in her opinion something needs changing. But whatever govt. in power does not have to pay attention. They may be polite and follow custom, but are not necessarily influenced by any royal.  I’ve actually received personal mail from friends asking, after they read stuff like this, “why doesn’t the Queen do something?” The simple answer is, she can’t.

You can bet she would if that were possible.

THE FRENCH TAKE SEX VERY SERIOUSLY IT APPEARS.

Well here’s one for the books.  This could only be possible in these more enlightened and modern times.

Take a look at this.

French Judge orders man to pay ex wife for no sex life.

A MAN was ordered to pay his ex-wife thousands of pounds in damages for failing to have enough sex with her during their 21-year marriage.

The man, 51, was fined £8,500 under article 215 of France’s civil code, which states married couples must agree to a “shared communal life”.
A judge has now ruled that this law implies “sexual relations must form part of a marriage”.

The rare legal decision came after the wife filed for divorce two years ago, blaming the break-up on her ex’s lack of activity in the bedroom.

A judge in Nice then granted the divorce and ruled the husband, named only as Jean-Louis B, was solely responsible for the split. But his 47-year-old former wife then took him back to court demanding the cash in compensation for “lack of sex over 21 years of marriage”.

The ex-husband blamed “tiredness and health problems”.

But a judge in the south of France’s highest court in Aix-en-Provence ruled: “A sexual relationship between husband and wife is the expression of affection they have for each other, and in this case it was absent. By getting married, couples agree to sharing their life and this clearly implies they will have sex with each other.”

SEX STARVED WIFE?

Today’s Chess Problem

I’m (hopefully) going to start posting a daily chess problem. The problems will come from the book Combination Challenge! by Lou Hayes and John Hall. I’ll only be posting those that I’ve solved. I’ve got 3/4ths of the book to go. This is a public service because, as Siegbert Tarrasch said:

Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy.

Today’s problem:

image

White to move and win.

Hint: Black’s back rank is weak. Solution posted as an update tomorrow.

Update! I’ve found a ‘cook’ to the book solution. There’s a ‘zwischenzug’ that wins for Black! Bonus points for finding both the ‘book’ solution and the ‘cook’.

Solution: The book gives:
1. Rd1! Qxe2
2. Qxg7+ Nxg7
3. Rxd8+ Ne8
4. Rxe8#

But, there’s nothing forcing Black to play 1… Qxe2. I’ve yet to find a win for White if Black plays 1… f6 instead of 1… Qxe2. In fact, I believe Black wins in all variations. This is the ‘cook’.

Free web course on the Constitution

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh today and he mentioned that Hillsdale College is running their second annual Intro to the Constitution web course:

On September 15, in observance and celebration of Constitution Day, Hillsdale College will hold our second annual Constitution Day Celebration, this year featuring Congressman Paul Ryan, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer, members of the Hillsdale College faculty, and other distinguished guests.  Once you register for this event – it’s free – you’ll be able to watch all of these speeches and panels live from your home or office. Even if you are unable to watch on the day of the event, we will make all of the videos available to view in the weeks following.

Then, for the next five weeks after our Constitution Day Celebration, we invite you back to this site for a special lecture series we are calling the “Introduction to the Constitution.” Included in what we will discuss is:

What the framers of the Constitution understood about the document they were writing, especially its fundamental principles true of human beings at all times and in all places;
Why the fundamental features of the American Constitution are representation and separation of powers;
Why the key to a republican form of government is the vibrancy, size and independence of this private society.

This program will serve as the basis for future educational programs on Constitution and related topics, including a more complete Online Constitution Class, of which this series will serve as a basis. We will be asking for your participation and feedback along the way to help us improve our efforts.

If you have not already, please take a few minutes to register for this program, the Constitution Day Celebration and the “Introduction to the Constitution” series. And please share this information with others – your friends, family, and colleagues who, like you, understand the vital need for restoring an understanding and love of the Constitution in our great nation.

We look forward to your partnership in this important work.

Best regards,

Dr. Larry Arnn
President, Hillsdale College

If you are interested, visit Rush For Hillsdale to sign up.

It’s free (yes, you will be asked for a donation), but I’d hurry. I signed up as soon as Rush mentioned it. While testing the link, I’ve found that the Hillsdale servers are overwhelmed.

John Bolton’s Latest Masterpiece

Former ambassador John Bolton has written a scathing critique of Obama’s foreign policy, or rather, the lack thereof. He pulls no punches. Try this:

Like Obama’s presidency generally, his national-security flaws combine ideology, naïveté, weakness, lack of leadership, intellectual laziness, and a near-religious faith in negotiation for its own sake.

Don’t hold back, Ambassador! Tell us how you really feel!  grin And I’ll bet there’s a teleprompter in those negotiations too. A few paragraphs later:

So what emerges from a president who is basically uninterested in foreign affairs, who doesn’t see our manifold threats and challenges as worthy of presidential time and energy, who repeatedly stresses devotion to negotiations that are divorced from their substantive outcome, and who believes that multilateral fora rather than American resolve and power can address foreign problems? The now-indisputable answer is a failing, collapsing U.S. foreign policy.

You’d think this would be obvious to anyone who learned to read despite the best efforts of the government schools. But I keep hearing from TV news readers how brilliantly Obama handles foreign affairs. Then the ambassador fillets Obama’s Mid-East policies:

Inexperience, incompetence, and blind faith in negotiation have led to gridlock in the Middle East. Obama has acted as though the gravest threat there to American interests and international peace and security is Israeli housing construction in the suburbs of Jerusalem.

Yeah, I’m really threatened by that, not the Islamic Jihad against the West.

VILLAGE LIFE AND THE FUN OF CRICKET. UNLESS UR A DAMN FOREIGNER!

Before I get to the post I intended, I’d like to share a wee update to an earlier story with regard to the planned eviction of a group of gypsies illegally occupying some Brit land.  Regular readers will know that efforts to remove them have been ongoing for ten long years.  Currently, there is a large contingent of anarchists advising them, and also hoarding stones in piles in anticipation of the arrival of the bailiffs. Stones are being hauled up to a watchtower they’ve constructed, via ropes and baskets.  But hold on.  There seems to be a non violent solution at hand and the gypos are saying they’re willing to leave.  True. BUT
They are asking for £6 million which in US dollars is ......

$9,566,905.14

Don’t believe I’d want to be standing near Chris Edwards or LyndonB right now, if my wife’s reaction is anything to go by. Hell, I don’t even want to be standing by me but I’m stuck with myself.

So now here’s the post I intended.

What kind of damn fool, what sort of stupid idiot dunce buys a property directly opposite a playing field and then complains about the activity there?

What we have here is a typical English village green where Cricket has been played since the 1700’s.

What we also have is a god damned foreigner with money who knows nothing about this country or it’s traditions or culture but will demand that the host village
where she owns the biggest house, quit playing the national game because she says, balls keep coming into her yard. She’s also worried she says, about her kids getting hurt.  Right. Did she think when she and hubby dear bought that million dollar home, that the green opposite was their private preserve?

OK I admit it. I don’t know for a fact she’s foreign except she looks it. And the name, which might mean nothing either. So yeah, I might be jumping that gun by a mile.
But come on, any Brit couple would know how village greens are used and anyway, when you spend a mil, don’t you ask?  You buy a house opposite a green and ask no questions?

The Chiappinis have lived there for five years. No kid has been hurt, so far. No ball has broken a window. So far.  But hey, why wait?

I once lived on the 7th fairway of a golf course.  Imagine my genuine shock when one day after living there a year, a ball came through one of our windows. Amazing, right? Imagine that will ya.  A damn golf ball thru our window. On a golf course.
There oughtta be a law!  I should have asked them to move the damn golf course.

Woman arrested by police in cricket whites on pitch

Maria Chiappini arrested on Bearsted Green cricket pitch after complaining about stray balls.

imageimage

By Victoria Ward, and John-Paul Ford Rojas

Since 1749 it has been the sound of their community coming together: the thwack of leather on willow followed by gentle applause during a friendly cricket match on the village green.

But team spirit was evidently lacking from the latest charity game on Bearsted Green in Kent which descended into chaos when simmering tensions between a local mother and the cricket club spilled on to the pitch.

The disruption began when Maria Chiappini stormed on to the green waving her arms and yelling that the match should be suspended because balls kept straying into her garden.

But the scene was to take a further unexpected twist when it emerged that two of the players were detectives from Kent Police, who abandoned play to arrest Mrs Chiappini for disorderly conduct.

Dressed in their cricket whites, the off-duty officers, brothers Det Con Andrew Dampier and Det Insp Ian Dampier took the 41-year-old by the wrists and detained her in the pavilion until a patrol car arrived.

Mrs Chiappini and her husband, John, 53, who own a chain of coffee shops, have been locked in a long-running dispute with Bearsted Cricket Club since they bought their £1.2 million property facing the village green five years ago.

The mother of two said she was fed up with balls landing in her garden and was worried they would damage the property or hurt one of her children.

But she said things had come to a head when she saw one of the players making a rude gesture at her as she arrived home on the Aug 29 bank holiday.

Mrs Chiappini told The Daily Telegraph that as she went over to remonstrate, someone came “charging” towards her. She was grabbed by two men and marched to the pavilion.

THE FULL VERSION OF SOME ENGLISH PEOPLE BEING, WELL, ENGLISH. DASTARDLY ENGLISH BEHAVIOR. INNIT?

one judge rules squatters good for public, another rules eviction notice

It’s this kind of thing that makes a person jump up and down and pull out their hair provided they have any, and cause onlookers to think they are viewing a crazy person.

I can not think of any judge in the USA, perhaps not even the loony tune libtard ones, issuing a statement like this.

At issue btw was a doctor and his very preggers wife who found their home occupied. He offered the squatting vermin the equiv. of almost $1,000 to leave but they wanted more.  I can just see how that’d work out in the USA.

Anyway …. the doc got his eviction notice approved (a different judge of course) and the scum have 24 hours to go. Which is still way too long.  What’s wrong with 10 minutes?  I mean after all, the property isn’t theirs to begin with. Then as they leave, shoot the bastards dead and eliminate that future threat as they surely will be alive.

There is a positive side to death for some groups of criminals that society is well off without.  Oh right I keep forgetting. ALL life is sacred.  Bullshit!  Some is worthless and wasting space and air and resources.  Child abusers lead the list, but squatters, anarchists and looters deserve no better treatment.

So then here’s one loony tune judicial judgement on the topic of squatting.  You’ll love the insanity on this one.

‘Squatters aren’t criminals and can be GOOD for society’:

Judge orders council to publish list of empty homes in its area

· Camden Council told to hand addresses to squatter website that advises people on how to occupy homes
· Judge dismissed claim that squatting victims suffer high costs as a result of occupation

By STEVE DOUGHTY

Squatters should be encouraged because they bring empty homes back into use, a judge said yesterday.

Fiona Henderson ruled they were not criminals and there was no evidence they carried out more anti-social behaviour than rent-paying tenants.
Her judgment is a blow to the thousands every year who see their homes invaded – and struggle through the courts to win them back.

She ordered a list of empty homes in North London to be made public to the Advisory Service for Squatters, an East London-based organisation known as the ‘estate agency for squatters’.

The group, run by Yiannis Voyias, publishes details of empty homes and a handbook showing how to take full advantage of housing laws.

Judge Henderson’s ruling that squatting is a good thing and not a crime comes as Justice Secretary Ken Clarke considers laws that would finally make squatting a criminal offence.
Proposals include prison sentences for persistent squatters such as Mr Voyias and the repeal of ‘squatters’ rights’ rules that prevent owners using force to take back their properties.

MORE IDIOT RULING BY IDIOT JUDGE

The DM surprised me and published my comment on this story.

Hey people. At long last there is one thing American haters and critics can not say, ‘Only in America’ about, because we would not put up with it to begin with. And NO judge in the USA would make the kind of statement about private property this one did. Oh,,, is it okay to to say, “Only in England” now?

Yiannis Voyias?  Where the hell did a name like that come from? See what I mean about exterminating some ppl?  Eliminate a guy like this and presto. What problem?
Who’d want to risk taking his place if they knew what the price would be?  He’s vermin and it’s just a wee bit of lice removal. Easy.
And just so ya know .... there’s an update to this story HERE which I would strongly advise you see.  There’s a box inside that link along with the update.
Inside that box is a detailed bit about how easy it is to take someone’s home or property and all thanks to a dumb law that has yet to be changed BUT
thanks to this foreign sounding scumbag (Voyias), sells the info. Take a look and you’ll see why I hold the attitude I do.

What A Croc

Filipino villagers capture giant crocodile

Hunt continues for an even larger one

image

Relieved Filipino villagers threw a fiesta when they captured a one-ton crocodile, with about 100 people pulling the feared beast from a creek by rope then hoisting it by crane onto a truck. The party may have been premature.

After the 20-foot (6.1-meter) saltwater crocodile was caught over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday an even bigger killer crocodile may lurk in creeks of the remote southern region.

The crocodile — weighing 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms) and estimated to be at least 50 years old — is the biggest caught alive in the Philippines in recent years. Wildlife officials were trying to confirm whether it was the largest such catch in the world, said Theresa Mundita Lim of the government’s Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau.

It was captured alive after a three-week hunt in Bunawan township in Agusan del Sur province, where villagers have been terrified. A child was killed two years ago in the township by a crocodile that was not caught, and a croc is suspected of killing a fisherman missing since July. Villagers witnessed a crocodile killing a water buffalo last month.

Bunawan villagers celebrated after they caught the crocodile. “It was like a feast, so many villagers turned up,” Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said.

Wildlife official Ronnie Sumiller, who has hunted “nuisance crocodiles” for 20 years and led the team behind the capture in Bunawan, said a search was under way for a possibly larger crocodile he and villagers have seen roaming in the farming town’s marshy outskirts.

“There is a bigger one, and it could be the one creating problems,” Sumiller told The Associated Press by telephone from Bunawan, about 515 miles (830 kilometers) southeast of Manila.

“The villagers were saying 10 percent of their fear was gone because of the first capture,” Sumiller said. “But there is still the other 90 percent to take care of.”

That’s not a croc, mate. That’s a bloody dinosaur.

The crocodile was placed in a fenced cage in an area where the town plans to build an ecotourism park for species found in a vast marshland in Agusan, an impoverished region about 515 miles southeast of Manila, [village Mayor Edwin Cox] Elorde said.
...
Despite the catch, villagers remain wary because several crocodiles still roam the outskirts of the farming town of about 37,000 people.

They have been told to avoid venturing into marshy areas alone at night, Elorde said.

The Guinness Book of World Records reports that the largest crocodile in captivity is 17-feet-long “Cassius” of Australia. If the facts are verified, the new Filipino crocodile could take the record by a long shot.

here we go again

Is the northeast about to have another round of flooding? Wouldn’t surprise me. Just a few days after an earthquake shook things up a bit and loosened the soil the Atlantic coast got slammed by Irene. While the winds may not have been terribly atrocious and the old girl was quickly downgraded to a tropical storm, she still managed to dump a foot or more of rain on just about everybody in less than a day. Huge floods resulted. Now, just a few days later, the remains of tropical storm Lee are making their way up the Appalachias and bringing another foot of rain, spread out over a solid week. With tornadoes! And for extra gits and shiggles we’ve got Katia coming up north, hopefully staying out to sea and veering off to the east to go slam Iceland by the end of the week or something. But that’s just the prediction, and it’s really difficult to predict how a chaotic event like a hurricane is really going to behave.

Bottom line is that the water logged north is going to have another foot or more of rain, when it’s just barely had a chance to drain off below flood stage. It’s already been raining here in NJ for a full day now, and the forecast is for steady rain until Saturday. Just what we needed.  I wonder if FEMA has rescue and relief plans in place to come save FEMA? This weather BS is becoming recursively redundant. We just might have to import a second Brit reporter to complain about it.

computer security link

I’m not certain how much I’ll be able to post over the next couple of days.  Am really loaded with some things need doing and have a time limit. So some things get done in between.

One of the things I’m trying hard to do is cull older issues of computer mags, covered in notes and page numbers of things to clean or download or both. I often wish I could simply pick up a stack and not look and just toss em all away. That’d be one job done in under 30 seconds.  But the problem is, there are things in them that I think I can use and so have to re-read and go over things.  In lots of cases I’ve simply taken out the page or pages that I think I need to study or dwnload from.  For example, something called FoxyProxy. It’s a FireFox add on for now, I’m gonna wait for the Chrome version. That’s cos I find myself from time to time not being able to get something from an American site where I’ve had an account for years, but won’t allow me to even buy some music because it isn’t available outside the USA. Hell, I’m happy to pay for it but no can do.  A way around that tho is to enter the URL into Google translate if it’s a video. That sometimes works. So that’s why I hold on to magazines for so long a time. I can go back a year later and find something I missed, or something of interest I marked and did nothing about at that time.

Well, I came across something of that deals with security, and has to do with fake sites and software etc.

I wasn’t blind or unaware of that sort of thing, and don’t download things willy nilly and always check things out where possible.  Sometime that means asking Drew or Vilmar or one of you guys, but not too often I hope.

So, with the thought in mind of sharing things I find that might be useful, even if only to one person, I offer this.
It’s an interesting bit of education even if you’re already on top of things. It comes from a magazine of 2010 but still quite useful and I’m sure can be updated easily.

Fake Disk Cleanup Utilities: The Ruse

Hon Lau
SYMANTEC EMPLOYEE

We have observed a change of tack by the creators of fake antivirus software (like Trojan.FakeAV). Since the latter parts of October, we have seen a move into the creation of fake hard disk scanners and defragmentation tools. What started as a trickle has now become a steady outpouring, with new clones being released almost daily.

So far we have seen the following names being used by the clones (all detected by Symantec as Trojan.FakeAV, UltraDefragger, or Trojan.FakeAV!gen28):

· Ultra Defragger

· Smart Defragmenter

· HDD Defragmenter

· System Defragmenter

· Disk Defragmenter

· Quick Defragmenter

· Check Disk

· Scan Disk

All the versions behave and look the same way—as it installs, it performs a scan looking for problems.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
