Coptic Christians killed in Cairo clashes …. at least 10 dead, many injured …

There isn’t anything I can say that wasn’t said better a few days ago by Drew.

I think he covered all the bases well at this post on 3/7.

The view from Israel -

At least 10 Coptic Christians were shot dead and 110 wounded by gunfire in religious clashes with Muslims in Cairo.

1:03PM GMT 09 Mar 2011

The clashes between Christians and Muslims erupted in the poor working class district of Moqattam midafternoon Tuesday when at least 1,000 Christians gathered there to protest the burning of a church last week.

Fighting broke out when dozens of Muslims showed up in Moqattam, inhabited by Copts who work as refuse collectors and who had blocked a main north-south artery in the capital.

People threw rocks from both sides and witnesses said soldiers at the scene fired shots into the air in a bid to disperse the crowds.
Christians, who make up about 10 per cent of Egypt’s 80 million population, complain of systematic discrimination and have been the target of several sectarian attacks.

Ahead of the incident in Moqattam, Copts had protested in central Cairo against the burning of a church south of the capital after deadly clashes between Christians and Muslims.

The protest outside the radio and television building came a day after at least 2,000 angry Christians demanded that the torched church be rebuilt, and that those responsible be brought to justice.

american airlines suck as they screw old employee out of some benefits for being pc incorrect

Damn. No logic and all political correctness.
The UK, where I am?

Not this time.

Try American Airlines (freekin idiots) in the USA. Even there. I HATE this sort of thing. Don’t you?

Here’s a thought people.

American figured, hey. Here’s a chance to save money cos after 55 years we’ll pay more, he’s old so his health will cost us more in benefits, oh woo-hoo.
Lets stitch the old boy up with homophobia or at the least, bad language.  I bet they don’t really care that much that he used the word faggot. And if they did, they are assholes of the very first rank.

War veteran loses his job after 54 years for gay slur he made while DEFENDING homosexual soldiers’ right to serve

By Daily Mail Reporter

Freddy Schmitt, 82, from New York, was told he no longer had a job with AMERICAN AIRLINES after allegedly using the term ‘faggot’ during a workplace session about ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’.

The company said it did not matter that the World War II veteran was defending gay soldiers’ right to serve and that the context of the comment - ‘Back then a faggot coulda saved my life’ - did not change their decision.

Nor did the fact he has a blemish-free employment record, or the pleas from his work colleagues to give ‘Papa Freddy’, as he was known as, another chance.

Co-worker Jack Sullivan said: ‘The guy is like everybody’s father here.’

Mr Schmitt, a baggage crew chief from Brooklyn, said he simply wants the same thing the U.S. Army gave him six decades ago - an honourable discharge.

According to the New York Post, he made the remark in December and was immediately suspended and then fired after two hearings last month.

He said he wishes he could have stayed on until November when he was planning to retire, so he could leave with the milestone under his belt .

‘It would look nice, going out with 55 years. After 54 years, all I want is to go out in good faith,’ he said.

Mr Schmitt is appealing the decision but it could take months, according to union officials.

Under the terms of the firing, Mr Schmitt retains his pension but loses his health benefits and the travel privileges his wife of 45 years, Viola, enjoyed.

Openly gay, lesbian or bisexual people are currently barred from military service.

‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ is the policy restricting the United States military personal from efforts to discriminate or harass closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants. The restrictions are mandated by federal law

In 2008, President Obama ordered a full repeal of these laws and pledged again in 2009 to the Human Rights Campaign that the ban would be ended but so far it has not come into effect.

A MUST SEE/READ FOR ALL OF US INTERESTED IN ARCHEOLOGY AND RELATED

Now how about this?  I’ve had it for a day or two and missed posting it till now.

She’s aged well: Face of incredibly preserved 700-year-old mummy found by chance by Chinese road workers

By OLIVER PICKUP

Eyebrows still intact highlighting amazing level of preservation

Mummy believed to be a high-ranking member of the Ming Dynasty

Wearing silk and cotton, she’s the first major discovery in years in the area

image

THESE INCREDIBLE PICTURES show a 700-year-old mummy, which was discovered by chance - by road workers - in excellent condition in eastern China.

The corpse of the high-ranking woman believed to be from the Ming Dynasty - the ruling power in China between 1368 and 1644 - was stumbled across by a team who were looking to expand a street.

And the mummy, which was found in the city of Taizhou, in the Jiangsu Province, along with two other wooden tombs, offers a fascinating insight into life as it was back then.

Discovered two metres below the road surface, the woman’s features - from her head to her shoes - have retained their original condition, and have hardly deteriorated.

When the discovery was made by the road workers, late last month, Chinese archaeologists, from the nearby Museum of Taizhou, were called into excavate the area, the state agency Xinhua News reported.

They were surprised by the remarkably good condition of the woman’s skin, hair, eyelashes and face. It was as though she had only recently died.

the right hand of the 700-year-old mummy showed her preserved skin, and a ring.

The mummy was wearing traditional Ming dynasty costume, and also in the coffin were bones, ceramics, ancient writings and other relics.

This is the latest discovery after a lull of three years in the area. Indeed, between 1979 and 2008 five mummies were found, all in very good condition.

Those findings raised the interest in learning the techniques to better understand the Ming dynasty’s expertise in mummifying as well as their funeral rituals and customs.

SKOOL DAZE - SKOOL DAZE … an unsettling update …

English pancake breakfast and then ham and lots of coffee with Bailey’s Irish Cream, not too much of that, and I believe I may be set for the day.

Back on the third of this month I posted something I called Skool Daze (and benefits) and a few of our regular commenters had some things to say.
Like cbullitt who says;

Wow. Learning how to use the phone to be a beggar is the same as physics? Now I know how those Climate Scientists got their degrees.

And Rich K always cracks me up with things like;

HEHE. OMG, Im laughing so hard at this I think Ive wet myself.
So exactly HOW long will it be till Britannia sinks below the waves????

Our Wardmom had a lot to say on that post of March third but I’ll just quote this line. For now.

And how does it benefit the kids, the society and the future to limit their minds and education to learning out how to fill out Nanny State forms?

Well folks ... as the great Jolson once remarked.  “ You ain’t heard nothin’ yet.” In our case, you ain’t read anything like the following yet. Or have you?

I’m saving the most gross for the last.  In the meantime, take a look at this.

Not exactly a new issue here but this came up only yesterday so another school joins the madness. Or perhaps not?  You decide.

School under fire for offering nine-year-old pupils £1 ‘bribes’ to attend extra lessons

By KATE LOVEYS

PUPILS as young as ten are being ‘bribed’ to attend extra lessons in a desperate effort to improve a primary school’s exam results.

The under-performing school has resorted to paying youngsters £1 every time they attend 45-minute cramming sessions before regular lessons begin.

The workshops in reading, writing and mathematics are held between 8am and 8.45am three days a week and are designed to get pupils through national exams in May.

But the tactic has met with dismay among education experts.

A spokesman for the ATL teaching union said: ‘It is desperately, desperately sad that schools attach such high stakes to these tests.
‘Children this young need time away from school. Time to be children. Time to be with family and to play. They shouldn’t be attending extra lessons outside of school hours.
The pressure is also likely to lead to pupils and teachers underperforming.’

MORE of BRIBE THE KIDDIES

That’s pretty mild I think. You may not think it’s smart, but I doubt you’ll pull your hair out in frustration.
Well friends, the next article get a tad murkier.  Still ... you may scratch your heads and wonder what rocket scientists came up with it, and it certainly belongs in the category that CBullitt refers to. You’ll love this one. Can’t wait to see what you folks have to say on the subject, but stay tuned cos we aren’t done.

How to… shoplift! University newspaper’s guide to STEALING without being caught

By Daily Mail Reporter

A guide produced by student activists on the ‘art of shoplifting’ has outraged retailers who say it could cause them financial costs.

image

The document funded by the taxpayer urges cash-strapped students to ignore any moral concerns and follow its step-by-step stealing techniques.

It coaches would-be thieves on how to swipe goods without being spotted by staff or CCTV.
Tips include how to exit stores without attracting suspicion and suggestions of what lies to tell if caught by police.

Legal experts say that the student activists behind the guide - from Queen Mary College, University of London - could face prosecution over its publication.
Some of them took part in the infamous recent riot at the Conservative Party’s Millbank HQ and retailers have branded them ‘highly irresponsible’ for producing the guide.

It features prominently in their new student newspaper ‘The Paper’, whose front cover shows rioters occupying the roof of the building.
The newspaper was put together with money from the Centre for Ethics and Politics at the college’s School of Business and Management, which is ultimately funded by the taxpayer.

Around 9,000 copies were printed and distributed at a recent student demo in London against higher tuition fees and it is now available online.

It is introduced in the paper as a ‘regular series of DIY and how to guides for making trouble.’

Queen Mary has defended the shoplifting advice by claiming it is ‘satirical’. But there is little hint of humour in the thieving tips.
Examples include: ‘Try to find where the video surveillance monitors are and who is watching them’.

They advise: ‘It is a good idea to keep your back to the camera as much as possible without looking suspicious’.
Another tip point out: ‘Display units can make perfect blind-spots’.
If caught by shop staff, the guide suggests: ‘Beg them not to call the cops. ‘If the cops do arrive, it’s a good idea to act scared sh**less because they may assume you’re a first offender and not bother to check your record’.
They add: ‘Don’t antagonise the filth. It is their personal discretion as to how bad you get busted.’

Andrew Dodd, spokesman for trade association the British Retail Consortium, raised the possibility of the editors being prosecuted for inciting shoplifting.
He said: ‘This guide is extremely irresponsible, if not illegal. Everyone involved in it should be ashamed of themselves for encouraging people to steal from shops.
‘Shop crime is no laughing matter because it imposes a huge financial cost on retailers and then on to honest shoppers who end up paying more for their goods.
‘There is also significant human cost to thousands of incidents each year where shop staff intervene to try and prevent shoplifting and are physically or verbally abused.’

The guide was originally published in an Australian student newspaper whose editors were prosecuted although charges were later dropped.

‘That taxpayers’ money has been used to fund these newspapers demonstrates the contempt the taxpayer is held in by left wing academics and the students they teach.

‘This celebration of criminality portrays the university in its worst light however the vast majority of students here are sick to death of the tiny number of far Left students who see political posturing, rather than education, as their main purpose at university.

There’s a bit more to read HERE

Hold on to your hair cos this last one takes the gross prize. I don’t understand this.  True, there are a lot of parents who don’t much tend to their offspring, don’t pay much attention to what they watch.  For example, parents who may view porn and don’t hide what they’re looking at from a child in the same room.
Whatever the reasons .... I still think of 5 yr olds as toddlers. There’s a lot of things that are given much exposure and kids can’t help but see things. In movies, on the net and in advertising and TV shows.  Things are far more open then in my day. So perhaps kids of a certain age do need sex-ed from some source, so they don’t grow up believing having kids themselves when they’re 12 is ok.  Anyway ... I’m not one to get all prudish over too many things but this really is over the top. I think way over.

Whatever happened to something called The Children’s Hour?  It was radio and TV.  Does anyone remember “LET’S PRETEND?” If yes, then you’re my age.
Things sure are different today.
Take a look at how different.

Should five-year-olds be taught about sex in such an explicit way?

By KATE LOVEYS and HANNAH ROBERTS

Explicit cartoons, films and books have been cleared for use to teach sex education to schoolchildren as young as five.

A disturbing dossier exposes a wide range of graphic resources recommended for primary school lessons.

The shocking material – promoted by local councils and even the BBC – teaches youngsters about adult language and sexual intercourse.

‘If public bodies believe these resources are suitable for young children, there is clearly a problem with their judgment and more control needs to be given to parents.’
The Christian Institute identified 16 councils which have recommended explicit books and videos to schools.

These include Derby City, Devon County, Gloucestershire County, Swindon County, Worcestershire County, Hampshire County, Birmingham City and Brighton and Hove, many of which have links to the material on their websites.

At present, primary and secondary schools have to teach pupils ‘age-appropriate’ science lessons about the biology of sex.

Brazil opens Lula oil field, starts pumping oil, only 3 years after discovery.

image

The Cidade de Angra dos Reis

ON BOARD THE CIDADE DE ANGRA DOS REIS — Brazil’s quest to remake itself into a global oil superpower is gaining momentum on this giant ship anchored about 200 miles south of Rio de Janeiro in the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Crews on this tanker-like vessel recently began extracting the first barrels of oil from a giant field known as Lula, more than three miles below, that has been called the biggest oil discovery in the Americas in three decades. Production is still at a trickle as the project ramps up. But lessons learned here will be critical in developing a vast network of nearby “pre-salt” reservoirs that are estimated to hold 50 billion to 100 billion barrels of oil — enough to turn Brazil into one of the world’s top five producers of crude.

“The challenges to develop this area are very big,” Humberto Americano Romanus, a senior engineer with Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil company, acknowledged as he stood on the Cidade de Angra Dos Reis on a hot, clear February day in the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. The stakes may be even bigger. Expected oil wealth from the region could be a “passport to the future,” as Brazil’s new President Dilma Rousseff said, for what is already one of the fastest-growing emerging economies in the world.

But there remain many technical challenges to pulling barrels of oil out of fields buried beneath more than a mile of water and two miles of rock. High pressures and corrosive conditions can wreak havoc on equipment, while a thick layer of shifting salt poses the constant threat of well bores collapsing in on themselves.

In addition, Brazilian lawmakers last year passed new protectionist regulations for the pre-salt region that some experts fear will add costs and impede growth. The situation highlights how the soaring promise of investing in a fast-growing developing nation like Brazil often collides with the frustrating reality of operating there. Still, experts say, when it comes to oil and gas, Brazil may be too good an opportunity to pass up.

Announced in 2007, the Lula field - originally called Tupi - was Brazil’s first major pre-salt discovery and is estimated to have 6.5 billion recoverable barrels of oil. It will figure prominently in Petrobras’ plan to spend $224 billion between now and 2014 on projects that double its current output of 2 million barrels per day.

The Cidade de Angra dos Reis - a giant vessel called a floating production, storage and offloading unit, or FPSO - moved into position in October. Anchored by more than a dozen pilings plunged into the seabed, it is producing about 14,000 barrels of oil a day. But soon it will reach 100,000 barrels per day as more wells come online and a natural gas pipeline is connected in March.

The FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis MV22 is moored in 2,149m of water in the Tupi field, Santos Basin. [ Just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro ]

MODEC converted the VLCC “M/V Sunrise IV” into the FPSO. The FPSO is capable of processing up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day and 5 million m3 of gas. The facility is designed for H2S and CO2 removal and is capable of reinjecting CO2 downhole at 550 bar [ 8000psi ] in addition to exporting sales gas to shore. The FPSO will initially gather production from five subsea wells and has the ability to accommodate four additional production wells in the future.

Perhaps just as valuable as the oil coming from those wells will be the knowledge gained at Lula - whose name changed in December from Tupi to the Portuguese word for “squid,” and perhaps not coincidentally, is the name by which popular former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a champion of offshore development, is known to Brazilians.

It was on this vessel last fall that Lula, wearing bright orange coveralls, a hard hat and safety glasses, held up his crude-stained hands for the cameras to mark the start of oil production at the field.

Petrobras CEO Jose Sergio Gabrielli de Azevedo said the idea at the Lula field is to proceed slowly, determine how the pre-salt reservoirs behave and then apply the best recovery methods.
“The only way to learn with new reserves is producing,” he told reporters in a recent group interview at Petrobras corporate headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. “That’s what we are doing.”

The view from Israel -

There are two Egyptian revolutions. The one marketed for Western consumption by Egyptian bloggers and the American media-- and the real revolution.
...
The actual Jan 25 revolution was wildly different from the one depicted in news reports. Behind the veil of English speaking Twitter feeds by young activists, is an angry and bigoted population which hated Mubarak not because he is a tyrant, but because he maintained ties to America and Israel, and refused to aggressively persecute Egypt’s Christians. Egypt is not looking for a Western style democracy. What the Arab street really wants is a tyranny that reflects its values.

Few of the gullible Western supporters who follow the revolution by Twitter, understand just how much the ordinary Egyptian taking part in the protests hates them. Behind all the English language signs produced for the foreign press and the articulate bloggers cultivated by the US and EU governments, is the angry mob who believes that Mubarak was a puppet of the CIA and the Mossad. And who believe the same thing about all the earnest CNN and CBS correspondents who came to be photographed against the background of a revolution.

No matter how much the reporters propagandized their cause, the mob was certain that they were there to support Mubarak. That belief is part of the xenophobic identity of Egyptians, and so many others in the Muslim world. The only popular cause in the Muslim world is fought against the Americans-- even when the Americans are on their side.

Yahood o Hunood” like the taunts of “Yahood” at Lara Logan or US soldiers in Iraq arises from the xenophobia and bigotry of the Muslim world. That bigotry is fed by the Muslim need to blame their failures on a vast conspiracy against them by people who are their inferiors. The parallels to Nazi Germany are too obvious to even be worth going into.

The real Egyptian revolution was mob violence against the targets of their conspiracy theories, rather than a movement toward democracy. Assaults on Western reporters are not an aberration, but the norm. As often as CNN cheers on the revolution, the average Egyptian will still call them Yahood and CIA. Because the average Egyptian is fueled by hate for outside forces, rather than a striving for progress and reform.

What went wrong is that Egypt is not England or America. It is an unstable Muslim country with a booming population, which wants low prices, social services and the repression of women and infidels under an Islamic system. They will support anyone who can give these things to them, and bring down anyone who doesn’t. That is your Egyptian democracy.

Egypt is the liberal’s Iraq. Except that the regime they overthrew was pro-Western, not genocidal and did not gas children. After having spent 7 years condemning the Bush administration, they orchestrated a far more senseless wave of regime change that opens the door for the Calphate to rule the region.

dance gypsy, sing gypsy, drink gypsy, steal, gypsy! “a-doin’ what comes natch-er-lee”

I don’t understand why the govt. here has been unable to tackle the problem of these folks.
One of the problems has been in contention for TEN YEARS.
Well hell, that shouldn’t be any surprise. Look at the squatter problem here. All talk and nothing done and more on that later but ….

These three articles came to my attention only a short while ago. One dates to the end of Feb, don’t know how I missed it. Another has been posted before but is in the news again.  All relating to one of the cancers eating away at this once great country.

The cancer in this case is Travelers. Some say Gypsies and some say there’s a difference between the two, aside from country of origin.
Wherever they’re from, they are a drain on their host country.  But then, I’ve said that before. Everyone knows it.  For some of you new to BMEWS and new as well to the problem of these leeches who often move onto public property and settle in, they have been declared a ‘race’ by the last govt. and so now enjoy the status of a minority group.  Careful now.  In this brave new world, insulting them or making disparaging remarks about the bastards could see you in court.

This is from last month and is gypo event #1.
I think the Mail headline writer got a bit carried away. I kind of doubt that the town was really “terrorised” by some horses but then, I wasn’t there.

Town terrorised by 250 wild horses ‘abandoned by gypsies who can’t afford to feed them’

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

A town is being overrun by a pack of 250 wild horses abandoned by gypsies who can’t afford to feed them.
Five of the horses have been killed when they were hit by cars and others are starving because they are not being fed.
RSPCA inspectors were today on the scene at Bridgend, South Wales, after calls from worried animal lovers.

The horses are believed to belong to gypsy families who have moved on from the area and were unable to pay for their feed and upkeep.
Hundreds of people have posted messages on a Facebook page set up by the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies.

Chairwoman Jenny Macgregor said: ‘The horses are everywhere, we’ve had reports of them getting onto the M4 motorway and being killed.
‘We have found at least five or six dead and they are dying of starvation and lung infections.
‘The situation is out of control.’

Residents in the town say they have been woken up by small groups of horses galloping past their homes in the middle of the night.
Animal lover Pat Jones said: ‘They have apparently been wandering around for the last few days.
‘One of my friends has spent the morning trying to keep them from running into the road.
‘There are around 250, but they have split up into groups and they are absolutely starving.
‘I’ve heard that at least five or six have been found dead. It’s really sad.’
An RSPCA spokesman said: ‘We are assessing the situation.’

SOURCE

Our second article also involves horses but not quite in the same way.  This story has visible blood at the link.
What IS the same is the trouble these life forms cause wherever they are found.
They are good for the same reason squatters are good.
They prove conclusively that, The Law Is An Ass!

Big fat gypsy shoot-out: Hundreds of terrified travellers run for cover after armed rivals take feud to horse fair
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

This was the terrifying scene after two men were shot when a bitter feud between traveller families erupted at a horse fair in Ireland.

image

Children were knocked to the ground as hundreds of people scattered in all directions after hearing gunfire at Smithfield Horse Fair in Dublin at the weekend.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident at around 11.30am at Smithfield, in the north inner city on Sunday

The victims are being treated in hospital but it is thought their wounds - to the hip and leg - are not life-threatening.

(oh dear. not life threatening. what a shame that is.) italics by peiper

A third man sustained wounds to his arm and was said to be undergoing treatment in hospital.
A suspect explosive device was also recovered at the scene. It is being examined by Army bomb experts.
The Defence Forces later revealed the device to be a ‘homemade’ shotgun.
More photos and lots of blood at the link. Have fun.

ANOTHER DAY OF GYPSIE PLAY

This is more or less an update to a story that’s been running for a very long time.
The difference this time is, the figure for removing the illegal scum has grown.
The Brit taxpayer in the region is none too happy.  I mean, they weren’t right pleased to begin with and are now at knife’s edge.
Take another look at this one. See the photo at the link cos this is a huge camp.
Been there ten years and hasn’t been legal from day one.
But remember now. They’re a racial minority so kid gloves with any remarks.
You don’t wanna be sued for any hurt feelings.

Cost of evicting travellers from UK’s biggest illegal site could cost taxpayer a staggering £18m

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 2:06 PM on 7th March 2011

The huge cost of evicting travellers from the UK’s largest Gypsy site in Essex could reach £18million it was revealed today.
Occupants of the site at Dale Farm in Crays Hill have been locked in a 10-year dispute with Basildon Council over the greenbelt land they use as their home.
But now, just days from councillors approving an eviction order, the breakdown of the cost of removing the 90 families from the site has been outlined.

The cost is broken down between the council and police’s ‘worse case scenario’ estimates, with £8m being spent by the council and £10m by Essex Police.
The removal of the gypsies is expected to take around eight weeks, with the expenditure confirmed in a meeting due to take place next Monday.
If confirmed the residents would be given 28 days to leave the site, with the enforcement notice applying to 51 pitches, outbuildings, utility blocks, fencing and walls.
Despite the huge cost, Tony Ball, leader of the council is determined to press ahead if the families choose not leave by their own accord.
Mr Ball said: ‘No one wants a forced clearance of this site and we have spent 10 years asking the travellers to work with us to seek a peaceful resolution.
‘However, it is important the law is applied equally and fairly to all people and if we do not take action in this case, we would have little moral right as a planning authority to take action against future unauthorised developments.
‘That would set a very dangerous precedent.’
The huge bill could force town hall bosses in Basildon to axe more jobs and hike council tax and the town’s Labour group has opposed the eviction on humanitarian and costs grounds even when the estimations were smaller.
Group leader Lynda Gordon said: ‘Only a week ago we were told we were reckless for wanting to take £2million out of reserves to pay off the sports village to avoid selling off playing fields.

Legal wrangling over the issue first began a decade ago when the council became aware that families had started to used the land at, which now houses more than 1,000 people.
But travellers - who have placed a large banner declaring “We won’t go” over the site’s entrance - have declared they will use violence in a bid to protect their homes.
Mr Ball added: ‘We have tried to work with the families concerned to find a peaceful resolution but, after 10 years of continued and illegal development of the green belt, we must draw a line under the matter and take action.

GYPSIES,TRAMPS and THIEVES

For those who would like to learn more .... ENGLAND’S GREEN BELT

Hell’s Bells. As long as I’m talking about Gypsies I may as well add this one item to the list.  Poor woman looks at least 25 or more yrs older.

Gypsy wife becomes world’s youngest grandmother… at 23

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 3:23 PM on 7th March 2011

· She gave birth at 13 to daughter who fell pregnant at 11
· She says marrying young is ‘tradition’ in Romanian gypsy circles

A gypsy wife has become the world’s youngest grandmother - aged just 23.
Rifca Stanescu, from the village of Investi, Romania, told how she gave birth to her daughter, Maria, while only 13.
Despite her mother’s pleas to stay in school, Maria gave birth to son Ion at the age of 11.

Rifca, now 25, told the Sun: ‘I am happy to be a grandmother but I wished something else for Maria - and something else for me.
‘Ion is a good boy - and he is already engaged to a girl aged 8. Boys are always good to have - they don’t have to suffer as much girls I think.’
Born in 1985, Rifca defied her family’s wishes and ran away with jewellery seller Ionel Stanescu when she was 11 and he was 13.

Can’t Be Fixed

20% of Christchurch New Zealand to be plowed under

Earthquake turned the soil to liquid that no longer supports buildings

10,000+ homes to be lost

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Some 10,000 houses in Christchurch will have to be demolished because of damage from last month’s earthquake and parts of the city will have to be abandoned altogether, the country’s leader said Monday.

The magnitude 6.3 temblor hit within three miles (five kilometers) of Christchurch and close to the surface on Feb. 22. It shattered homes, heritage buildings and office blocks, and caused 166 confirmed deaths. Officials say the toll is expected to rise to more than 200 as rescuers continue to search for bodies trapped in the rubble.

Earthquakes can cause sections of earth to liquefy and push up to the surface as watery silt, a process called liquefaction. In Christchurch, 260,000 tons of silt have already been scraped away.

“There are some parts of Christchurch that can’t be rebuilt on,” Prime Minister John Key told reporters. “The liquefaction damage from the ... earthquake is so great and the land damage ... is so significant we can’t remediate it.”

Key said some 10,000 houses will have to be demolished in the city, including 3,300 that were damaged by an earlier magnitude 7.1 quake on Sept. 4. That quake was deeper and further away than the Feb. 22 event, and did not cause any deaths or as much damage.

As well, several hundred central city commercial buildings will have to be bulldozed, Key said.

“Potentially there are some ... areas of Christchurch which will need to be abandoned and we will have to provide other alternatives for people to live in because the land has been so badly damaged, we can’t fix it — certainly not in a reasonable time frame,” he said.

Soil liquefaction is a geological phenomena that occurs when soil in a very high water table condition is subject to vibration. And it has been raining like mad this winter in the lands down under. The ground vibrations knock apart the cohesiveness of the soil, the water table drains in or gets squeezed up, and the soil almost instantly turns into quicksand. Christchurch had been hit by the Darfield earthquake back in September, and that 7.1 magnitude 40 second event started the process. Then came the rains.  The latest earthquake came on February 22 with a magnitude of 6.3. Because it had nearly the same epicenter as the quake back in September (24 miles apart is a geologic nada), it is considered to actually be an aftershock ( a reprise ) of the earlier quake. Other geologists argue that this one was it’s own earthquake, since it happened along a different fault line that they didn’t even know existed until the quake. I gather there are layers of those under the city. The February 22nd event was a very fast quake, more of a “pop” than a “slide”; described as a “strike-slip event with oblique motion”, some areas of land which moved vertically only 50cm did that moving at more than 2.2g, which was fast enough to throw people right off the ground and up into the air.

Whether more of the city will have to be abandoned remains to be seen.

‘Islam has no place in our country’: New German minister sparks immigration row

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 1:10 PM on 7th March 2011

Germany’s new interior minister has waded straight into controversy by claiming that Islam is not a key part of the German way of life.

Hans-Peter Friedrich, who took office last week in a cabinet reshuffle, stoked an increasingly serious row about immigration in his country when he told journalists: ‘Islam in Germany is not something supported by history at any point.’

Mr Friedrich was speaking in the context of an inquiry into the killing last week of two U.S. airmen at Frankfurt Airport. The suspect, 21-year-old Kosovan Arid Uka, is believed to be a lone operator motivated by radical Islamist beliefs.

Mr Friedrich later emphasised his position, saying that immigrants ought to be aware of Germany’s ‘western Christian origins’ and learn German ‘first and foremost’.

His comments were a play on the words of German President Christian Wulff, who in an attempt to defuse the integration row, has said that Islam now ‘belongs to Germany’ because of the four million Muslims who live there. Germany has western Europe’s second-biggest Islamic population after France with Turkish the single biggest minority.

Mr Friedrich’s remarks were condemned by opposition Social Democrats, Greens and several members of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s liberal Free Democrat coalition partners. Hartfrid Wolff, a liberal MP, said: ‘Islam has been a real part of Germany for several generations now; it is unhelpful to deny this fact.’

the rest is here

I know it’s far too late now to make Germany and all of Europe .... islam free! But it is a worthwhile dream.

Hijacked Tanker Rescued

“I’m king of the worl ... oops!”

“suspected" Somali pirates surrender on board MV Guanabara

USS Bulkeley Captures Pirates, Frees Oil Tanker

no shots fired, no pirates killed

MANAMA, Bahrain – A request for assistance from a Japanese-owned merchant vessel in the Somali Basin led to Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) warship USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) securing the release of the vessel and its 24 crew members from four suspected pirates, Mar. 6.

At approximately 3.00pm local time, Mar. 5, the oil tanker MV Guanabara reported it was under attack when it was 328 nautical miles south east of Duqm, Oman. Bulkeley, assigned to CMF’s counter-piracy mission Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 was directed to intercept Guanabara, supported by the Turkish warship TCG Giresun of NATO’s counter-piracy Task Force 508.

Following confirmation from Guanabara’s master that the suspected pirates were on board and his crew had taken refuge in the ship’s “citadel”, Bulkeley’s specialist boarding team, supported overhead by its embarked SH-60 helicopter, secured the Bahamian-flagged vessel and detained four men.

There was no exchange of fire at any time during the operation to release the MV Guanabara. The decision on what to do with the suspected pirates is ongoing.

USS Bulkeley is a 10 year old Arleigh Burke class destroyer nearly 510 feet long with a crew of 380.

MV Guanabara is a medium tanker, 106,045 dwt, 755 in length, built in 2007.

The Doctor Ordered It…

A new study shows that staring at women’s breasts is healthy! At least for the men.

The study found the men who stared at breasts more often showed lower rates of heart problems, a lower resting heart rate and lower blood pressure.

I’ve a question though. Does this apply to homosexual men? Any studies been done?

Regardless, peiper, please continue the Weekend Women/Eye Candy posts.

It’s for our health…

So Much For Democracy and Freedom

Every news story I see on Egypt leads me to believe more and more that a crazy pisslamic republic will arise from the ashes of Mubarak’s regime.

Let’s not kid ourselves.

Lies To Children is a Terry Pratchett concept. He didn’t invent it, but he did identify and name it: introduce a concept with a simplified germ of an idea that may be completely wrong, but it points young minds in the right direction. Go back later and teach more on the concept to straighten out the “lie” with more detail and a deeper truth. For complicated concepts it is sometimes necessary for several iterations of “lies to children” to be used, until their knowledge of the subject is both broad enough and deep enough to understand the complex truth. The problem with these “lies” is that the deeper truth is often never revealed or taught, leaving generations of children and adults with a complete misconception.

Here is an example. Surely you know the story of the Pilgrims? This is the history that gets taught in the fall of First Grade, The First Thanksgiving and the kids get to make those hand tracing turkeys and color them in so Mom can hang them on the fridge. When I went through Mrs. Day’s class back in the day, we got to color paper feathers and dress up as Indians. I’m sure that’s forbidden these days.

So tell me, why did the Pilgrims come to America? “For religious freedom” you say. Reflexively, for that’s what we were all taught. That’s the lie. The deeper truth is that when they came here, they established their own faith as the state religion, even though barely half the people on those boats were members of that faith. And they had no tolerance whatsoever for any other faith, or for any deviation, variation or evolution from their essential creed. They were bloody eyed zealots, and often bloody handed as well. It wasn’t just witches they executed. It was Quakers as well, among others. Read the story of Mary Dyer, hanged for her faith. Or Anne Hutchinson, proto-feminist, tried, condemned, and banished for breaking gender roles. Those not directly executed were stripped in public, flogged, disarmed, and banished. One of my own ancestors was in that bunch, 15 lashes with the scourge, and he got the heck out of Dodge before the whip marks heeled. So much for “religious freedom”. The only “truth” that seeps through the scholastic miasma hides in the verb puritanical, which has come to mean highly intolerant and out of date. “Lies to children” because simple minds can’t handle the bigger truth.

So let us not accept the mainstream media message that those in Egypt with Hope, seeking Change, have suddenly become the New Americans in spirit and outlook. They have not. They are jihadists, at least in spirit if not in universal action. That means many things, but this post spotlights the violent intolerance of other faiths and the quickness to blame others - usually Americans, Joooos, or Christians - for their acts of evil that is inherent in that spirit. And so another Coptic church gets burned, more Egyptian Christians get murdered. ( almost from the beginning of the modern era ["AD"] Egypt has been Christian. The Coptic church dates back to before 200 AD, 500 years before Mo’ and his Boyz showed up in 639 AD] ) And it hardly makes the news. There is an anti-Christian pogrom going on there, even though Egypt is 1/8 Christian by population. Violent persecution is nothing new to the Copts.

Nearly 4000 Muslims Attack Christian Homes in Egypt, Torch Church
A mob of nearly four thousand Muslims has attacked Coptic homes this evening in the village of Soul, Atfif in Helwan Governorate, 30 kilometers from Cairo, and torched the Church of St. Mina and St. George. There are conflicting reports about the whereabouts of the Church pastor Father Yosha and three deacons who were at church; some say they died in the fire and some say they are being held captive by the Muslims inside the church.

Witnesses report the mob prevented the fire brigade from entering the village. The army, which has been stationed for the last two days in the village of Bromil, 7 kilometers from Soul, initially refused to go into Soul, according to the officer in charge. When the army finally sent three tanks to the village, Muslim elders sent them away, saying that everything was “in order now.”

A curfew has been imposed on the 12,000 Christians in the village.

This incident was triggered by a relationship between 40-year-old Copt Ashraf Iskander and a Muslim woman. Yesterday a “reconciliation” meeting was arranged between the relevant Coptic and Muslim families and together with the Muslim elders it was decided that Ashraf Iskander would have to leave the village because Muslims torched his house.

The father of the Muslim woman was killed by his cousin because he did not kill his daughter to preserve the family’s honor, which led the woman’s brother to avenge the death of his father by killing the cousin. The village Muslims blamed the Christians.

The Muslim mob attacked the church, exploding 5-6 gas cylinders inside the church, pulled down the cross and the domes and burnt everything inside. Activist Ramy Kamel of Katibatibia Coptic advocacy called US-based Coptic Hope Sat TV and sent an SOS on behalf of the Copts in Soul village, as they are presently being attacked by the mob. He also said that no one is able to contact the priest and the deacons inside the burning church and there is no answer from their mobile phones.

Coptic activist Wagih Yacoub reported the mob has broken into Coptic homes and has called on Copts to leave the village. “Terrorized Copts have fled and some hid in homes of Muslim neighbors,” he added.

Witnesses said the mob chanted “Allahu Akbar” and vowed to conduct their morning prayers on the church plot after razing it.

There you have it. One muzzie shows a bit of restraint and doesn’t murder his own daughter fast enough, so his cousin kills him for it, which ignites a blood vendetta and the man’s son then kills the cousin. But let’s blame the Christians, and use this as an excuse to go on another violent rampage. Then put a lockdown on the victims, so they can’t retaliate in kind. That in itself is nothing new, but this insane outburst doesn’t fit the Established Meme, so it gets buried.

Don’t buy into the bullshit:

The springtime of the Arab world
by Samir Khalil Samir
There is no fundamentalism, or anti-Israeli ideology in the demonstrations in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, etc .. It is a movement of young people spurred on by economic suffering and ideals such as democracy, equality, freedom, justice. The demonstrations are free of violence and hatred. Europe and the United States who have always supported dictators remaining blind to the needs of young people in these countries need to examine their conscience.

... even if the bullshitters themselves believe it. That’s not how it will play out in the next year or two and you know it.

And don’t hide your lamp under a bushel basket either, as so many in the media and officialdom do.

Europe’s stuttering timidity in denouncing the persecution of Christians
by Bernardo Cervellera
After nearly three weeks, finally a European text condemns the violations of religious freedom of Christians. The statement suffers from “excessive” balance and distance. The EU’s inability to understand what is happening in North Africa and the Middle East is a result of its ignoring its Christian roots.
...
After more than three weeks of debate, the EU has managed to produce a text that explicitly mentions Christians as victims of persecution and the object of violent attacks. An earlier text had been prepared in January, after the terrorist attack on the Church in Baghdad and the massacre at the Church in Alexandria, but was it rejected because of the lack of references to Christians, since the EU preferred to use generic term “religious minorities”.

Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. 1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
