One thing leads to another

So I finished off the windows on that “cottage” and it’s outbuildings. Broke my butt and got the whole job done in 30 hours of labor. I told the property manager that the glazing on many of the windows was shot and that panes of glass would start falling out soon.

“So?”, she says. “Can you fix it?”

Why sure, yes I can.

“Good. Then get to work.”

There are about 65 windows in this place, almost all of them 6-8 panes of glass per sash. Two sashes per window ... that’s ... I dunno ... about 1000 panes of glass that need to be stripped, repointed, reglazed, primed, sills scraped and primed, then repainted. Looks like several weeks work to me.

So I guess I’d better go online and learn how to glaze windows.

I think it would have been smarter to have me fix the panes first then clean them, instead of other way ‘round, but I’ll take the work, thanks.

A Special Book

I’ve always loved books. At least since my public school teachers taught me how to read. (caveat: Mom had a lot to do with teaching me to read. )

Nowadays I don’t have cable TV.  My wife constantly comes home with stories of how we are ‘weird’. Yet we manage to save mucho dinero and give our local public library lots of business.

One of my all-time favorite movies is The Princess Bride. I’d almost forgotten the ‘prologue’ of the movie. Grandpa brought a ‘special book’.

I used to read to my granddaughter. She’d pick a book, settle herself on my lap, and imperiously proclaim ‘Read Me’.

So, I’d ‘read her’.

I’ve used this in my marriage. We now spend time reading to each other instead of watching TV.

Illegal Immigration: yet another Government-created problem

I’ve been thinking alot about illegal immigration and the political causus belli that has resulted in a President suing a State.

What, exactly, is the problem with illegal immigration? When you get to to the root of the problem, it is money. Money to pay entitlement ‘benefits’ to illegals and their children.

I’ve been reading a lot of history, specifically 19th century history. Illegal immigration wasn’t a problem. Legal immigration was, because of the potential to change the voting public. But back then, ‘illegal immigration’ didn’t burden States or the Fed. Why?

This is where the Government created the problem.

Back then, nobody had claim on another’s property. Now, thanks to Government entitlements, they do.

Would I really care if somebody slipped over the border if I wasn’t REQUIRED to pay for him/her/their healthcare? NO!

But why am I required to pay for them? Government!

When our forefathers and mothers were crossing the Plains, they didn’t claim a ‘right’ to anything except protection for Indian depredations. We know how well the Gov’t discharged that task.

My point is that you don’t have a ‘right’ to the fruits of another’s labors. Healthcare? You don’t have a ‘right’ to the doctor’s services.

In fact, so many current social controversies could be laid to rest if we just agreed that you don’t have a right to another’s labor.

Homosexual rights? Since when did the Federal government give marriage special privileges and tax advantages. Wasn’t true before 1900.

This is a work-in-progress. I really believe most of our problems can be traced to trusting to Washington DC to solve our problems.

This is also my first attempt at posting an editorial on BMEWS. Short, sweet (maybe), and definitely needs work.

The TEA Party and the GOP

Wow! Not a single post on a Monday? I’ve got 1 hour and 49 minutes to correct that.

Here’s the deal: The MSM has been doing their evil best to tie the GOP to the TEA party activists. As if there’s anything wrong with that, but I digress.

The MSM seems to think that tying the GOP to the TEA party people would be good for their guys. You know, the socialist, anti-American party of OBowMao, aka, the First Mongrel™.

But Emperor Misha I cuts through the crap:

His Imperial Majesty has now been forced to listen to enough wimpy “conservatives” hyperventilating about the possible “dangers” of the GOP being associated with the Tea Parties and blah, blah, blech that he feels a need to set the record straight.

In view of the GOP’s historic, massive fail when it comes to acting and governing in a fashion that can be said to be even remotely conservative, witness the MediCare Free-For-All, Shamnesty and, of course, their grandest moment of fail, the McVain candidacy, just to name a few, we think it only fair to say that if there is anybody with a legitimate grievance regarding associating the Tea Party with the GOP, then it’s the Tea Party and their sympathizers.

We therefore say, firmly and with conviction: QUIT ASSOCIATING US WITH THE PARTY OF STUPID!

It is, by far, the most vile slander that has been thrown at the Tea Party, and it must stop now.

Thatisall.

Republicans, I’m thinking you need to give us a good reason to vote for you. I’m tired of voting GOP and finding I voted for Stupid. Grow some cojones, or at least a man-eating vagina like Palin, Bachman, Brewer, etc.

Breast-feeding at the Y…M…C…A…

H/T OldCatMan

OCM quotes the article without giving a link. I found a link to an article covering this event here. But go to OCM’s blog. He’s got interesting audio/visual coverage. grin

Elizabeth Gomez , a mother of three from Medford, said she was told by a Y employee to leave the baby-sitting area of the North Suburban YMCA after starting to breast-feed her three-month old son earlier this week.

“She said there is no eating or drinking within the (babysitting) area,” Gomez, 36, said in an interview Thursday. “She told me I had to go out into the hallway . . . I said ‘I have a lawful right to be here.”

I’m… well, not sure if ‘appalled’ is the right word. ‘Flabbergasted’? Yeah, I’m flabbergasted that:

A) anyone would use that against a breast-feeding mother. This was the baby-sitting area. Would it have been okay to give a baby a bottle? Rules against eating and drinking target unwrapped food and open beverages for sanitary reasons. I’ve never heard such rules used against baby bottles or, in this case, breasts.

B) “I have a lawful right to be here.” True and sad. Massachusetts actually had to pass a law to allow women to breast-feed? That’s sad. Just because breasts have a secondary use as play toys for boys doesn’t mean there’s anything immoral about breast-feeding in a public place.

A state law protects mothers who breast-feed in public. It states that a mother, “may breastfeed her child in any public place which is open to . . . the general public,” and where the mother and child are lawfully present.

A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition, which pushed for passage of the state law, said the Y incident is an example of how employers don’t understand the state law, which has been on the books since April, 2009.

“Breastfeeding is not the same as opening up a lunch box with apples, bananas, and crumbs that are going to fall onto the floor,” said Marsha Walker, a board member of the nonprofit coalition based in Weston. “Breastfeeding is nutrition, but it’s a little different because a mother has to provide it.”

Q.E.D. I’m not actually shilling for breast-feeding, but I do wish people wouldn’t go nuts over a natural mother-child interaction.

The First Mongrel?

The alleged President of the United States skipped the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America to make an appearance on a daytime hen-party called ‘The View’. During this appearance he coined the new term by which he will be known henceforth in my posts.

When asked about his background, which includes a black father and white mother, Obama said of African-Americans: “We are sort of a mongrel people.”

“I mean we’re all kinds of mixed up,” Obama said.

He’s now the First Mongrel™, aka FMOTUS.

FMOTUS fhtagn!

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
