Warning on new IVF laws as single women told they can ‘name anyone’ as father on birth certificate.

Be interesting to see how this plays out in the future.  Not sure I understand it though.  What I mean is, are they serious?

Warning on new IVF laws as single women told they can ‘name anyone’ as father on birth certificate

Single women undergoing IVF will be able to name anyone they like as their baby’s father on the birth certificate from next month.

The regulations - which were last night branded ‘absurd’ - mean that women could nominate another woman to be her child’s ‘father’.

The ‘father’ does not need to be genetically related to the baby, nor be in any sort of romantic relationship with the mother.

Critics have sounded a warning about the ability of single women who have successful IVF treatment to nominate a person as the ‘father’

Critics said it meant a woman could list her best friend on the birth certificate.

The second parent, who will have to consent to being named, will take on the legal and moral responsibilities of parenthood.

This would give them the right to launch a custody battle if their tenuous relationship with the mother broke down - and to be pursued for child support payments.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) said that the regulations, part of the controversial embryology bill passed by parliament last year, will give lesbian couples in civil partnerships who undergo IVF the same rights as married heterosexual couples.

An unmarried man whose girlfriend undergoes fertility treatment will also find it easier to claim full parental rights.

But the changes, due to come in on April 6th, mean that the 2,000 women a year who have IVF using donated sperm could name almost anyone they like as the child’s father.

Critics said that the change that the lead to the role of father being downgraded to the one of godfather and warned that the child would be the one to lose out.

Baroness Ruth Deech, a former chair of the HFEA, said the practice would lead to the ‘falsification of the birth certificate’.

She said: ‘This is putting the rights of the parents way above those of the child. It is absurd that anyone can be named as the father or the second parent.’

Dr Trevor Stammers, a GP and lecturer in healthcare ethics, said questioned the strength of the relationships or friendships between the mother and ‘father’.

He said: ‘There is no doubt from sociological evidence accumulated over the past few years that children do best in a two-parent married family with heterosexual couples being the married parents.

‘It probably will be the child that is the loser but by the time we find that out, in 15 or 16 years, a huge amount of damage will have been done.’

Geraldine Smith, Labour MP for Morecambe, said a birth certificate should be a true record of a child’s genetic heritage.

She added: ‘I don’t think the State should collude with parents to conceal the true genetic identity.’

David Jones, a professor of bioethics, liked the role of second parent to that of godparent.

He added: ‘This sounds like social engineering on the hoof.  This is now arbitrary.’

The HFEA said it was unlikely for the actual sperm donor to be named on the birth certificate because the sample is normally obtained from a sperm bank.

A spokesman said the welfare of the child would always come first and any person nominated as a second parent would undergo counselling to ensure they understood the implications.

Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris, one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the new embryology laws, said: ‘This is a big step and is unlikely to be taken by someone who does not take their responsibilities seriously.’

Violent attacks by teenage girls treble in seven years.  (Gosh, can anyone guess why?)

I’m posting this story for a couple of reasons, knowing perhaps not many readers in states will care about crime and kids here in the UK.

It surely is a sorry ass situation when things come to this and my guess would be that the states aren’t much better with regard to this group.
Being away from home the past 4 and half years means I’m out of touch with things there.  But let me tell ya, this kind of story hits home.

While lucky enough not to have been confronted by anyone so far, I have passed any number of foul mouthed, slovenly and generally sober “youths” on some of my travels here.  And they damn well are intimidating.  Both sexes but to be honest I think maybe it’s my generation too that looks at young women who resemble guys in their attitudes toward mayhem, with some shock and disappointment.

I’ve seen and heard them on buses here, and nobody says a word to them.  You might be taking your life in your hands if you do.
These slags, sluts and thugs care nothing about civility and will be very quick to kick and stab. As in, to death.  And they are NOT necessarily on drink and drugs at that moment.  To them, it’s sport.

A couple of years ago one young teen age girl along with three guys, attacked people at random and in one case the girl used the victims head as a football while her life’s major achievement was being shot on a video phone.  The victim died.  None of the group is serving life!

What I described above is sadly not an isolated story.

But whenever there’s a story originating from the states about a gun crime, you can ALWAYS read the comments by readers here (UK) saying things like; Well what do you expect from a gun happy culture like America?  Of course is pisses me off no end because I can’t speak directly to our critics, who speak oh so knowingly about the USA and guns and crime there.

Frustrating on two counts of course because I can’t answer our critics AND ... I’m not armed.  And I don’t care what anyone tells you.  To be unarmed here is to be a sitting duck.  Same back home I would imagine.  But being armed isn’t any guarantee either as more often then not you won’t see the attack that floors you coming.

Violent attacks by teenage girls have more than trebled in the past seven years, new figures have dislcosed.

The Youth Justice Board found that girls under 17 were behind almost 23,000 violent attacks in England and Wales last year - more than 60 every day.
The researchers found that Britain’s binge-drinking culture was partly to blame for a rise in so-called “ladette” violence. Approximately one in three girls aged 15 to 16 admitting that she binge-drinks in the a survey.

Though young men still carry out far more crimes, the gap between the sexes is closing.
The total number of offences by girls aged ten to 17 resulting in court action in 2007/08 was 58,500, a ten per cent rise in two years.
Nearly four in ten crimes committed by girls involved violent assault. Nearly one in three involved handling stolen goods.

While the total number of offences by teenage boys is still much higher – 120,000 – the number has fallen by six per cent in the same period.
The findings came from research conducted by the Youth Justice Board based on cases in 2007/08 which led to courts imposing a community or custodial sentence or a supervision order. It included a MORI survey which asked young people how much they drink and whether they have broken the law.
Last month a report written for the Ministry of Justice also found mounting evidence of increased violence among girls.

In 1998, only 11 per cent of women between ten and 25 admitted committing a crime. That figure has now soared to 17 per cent, while the number of boys who admit law-breaking has stayed steady at 26 per cent.

Recent figures for arrests showed violent attacks by women ranged from street brawls and assault to grievous bodily harm and murder. Racially-aggravated attacks by girls more than doubled, from 351 to 748, and public order offences such as drunkenness rose nearly 40 per cent, compared to 2003/04.

Military to use new gel that stops bullets.  (Science Fiction?  Not according to this report)

I’m all for helping the military but it might be a good idea to let Brit civilians have this stuff as well.

Since nobody here can own a gun, I mean a real one, and since nobody here has any honest means of self defence against guns and bad guys with knives ... hey.  Maybe this stuff would help.

Kinda looks like something out of old comic books.

A new “bullet-busting” shock-absorbent gel is set to save the lives of British soldiers by substantially reinforcing their helmets.

By Thomas Harding Defence Correspondent

image

The Ministry of Defence has awarded £100,000 to a small company that has developed a special substance that hardens immediately on impact.
It is hoped that the shock-absorbing substance will soon be fitted onto the inside of soldiers’ helmets reducing in half the kinetic energy of a bullet or piece of shrapnel and hopefully making them impenetrable.

The gel, called d3O locks instantly into a solidified form when it is hit at high impact.
“When moved slowly, the molecules will slip past each other, but in a high-energy impact they will snag and lock together, becoming solid,” said Richard Palmer, who invented the gel. “In doing so they absorb energy.”

The d3O gel has already expanded into a range of sporting goods and is found in ski gloves, shin guards, ballet shoe pointes and horse-riding equipment. The substance relies on “intelligent molecules” that “shock lock” together to absorb energy and create a solid pad. Once the pressure has gone they return to their normal flexible state.

The gel is stitched into clothing or equipment that is supple until it stiffens into a protective barrier on impact.
If the product is taken on by defence contractors it could be used to reduce the current bulky and restrictive armour used by troops in on the frontline with gel pads inserted into key protective areas.

Mr Palmer said it was the equivalent to comparing “cumbersome” RoboCop to Spiderman with the latter’s protection “nimble covert and flexible”.

CCTV released of police ‘beating’ 15-year-old girl.  (hey, she begged for it. Good for the cop)

Don’t know what your take on this is but as far as I’m concerned, she asked for it.

It bothers the heck outta me to know that cops HAVE to put up with so much crap all in the name of ‘human and civil rights.’

Having said that, I do personally know of cases where cops really did step over the line and in fact were in the wrong.  So I’m not painting all of them with a golden halo.
But the fact remains that for the majority, they have a lot to put up with.
The slag here in the video thought she could do as she pleased but ... SURPRISE!
Lets see how she acts next time she’s pulled in. And she will be.

Oh damn it wait.  Maybe not.  She will by now have someone like that creepy Gloria Allmouth and sue the city for thousands.  Make it hundreds of.

On this one ... I’m all with the cop.  Misconduct?  What BS!  The misconduct was on the part of a mouthy teen who figured her civil rights extended to getting bitchy with police.

CCTV footage of a US police officer apparently beating a 15-year-old girl has been released.

Last Updated: 11:56PM GMT 28 Feb 2009

Prosecutors released the footage on Friday during the assault case against Deputy Paul Schene, who is accused of using excessive force.
The 31-year-old has pleaded not guilty to fourth-degree assault and has told prosecutors his actions were to “prevent another assault”, by the teenager.
The incident, which occurred last November in SeaTac City Hall, in the state of Washington, began after the teenager was brought in during a car theft investigation and kicked off one of her shoes towards the officer.

Daniel Satterberg, the county prosecutor, said: “We believe this case is beyond just police misconduct, it’s criminal misconduct. This is clearly excessive force.”
Deputy Schene has previously been investigated for shooting two people - killing one - in the line of duty in 2002 and 2006 but both times his actions were found to be justified.

Anne Bremner, Deputy Schene’s lawyer, said the video does not tell the whole story and had asked the trial judge not to release the video to the media.
She said: “As we argued to the judge, it will inflame public opinion and will severely impact the deputy’s right to a fair trial.” The teenager complained of breathing problems after the incident and medics were called to examine her.

She was subsequently taken to a youth detention center and charged over the theft of a car and third-degree assault of the officer.

It’s A Start

British Humour

A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale hits Pakistan. Two million Pakistanis are killed and over a million are injured.

The country is totally ruined and the government doesn’t know where to start with providing help to rebuild. The rest of the world promise aid.

The USA sends troops to help.

Saudi Arabia sends oil.

Latin American countries send supplies.

New Zealand sends sheep, cattle and food crops.

The Asian continents send labor to assist in rebuilding infrastructure.

Australia sends medical teams and supplies.

Britain, not to be outdone, are sending two million replacement Pakistanis.

God Bless British generosity.
