McCain: Yes, I am a Dork

image

No, this is not a joke. This is a screencap from McCain’s website, from the McCain Report Blog section. A huge ABBA fan. Like it says, “Seriously”. How kewl is that, huh?

What, you thought he was a RadioHead fan? Metallica? Just be glad his campaign staff hid all his Pat Boone records.

Ok, I have to admit, I’m pretty sure all the ABBA albums were around my house when I was growing up. And if you’re over 40, you probably know the words to every single one of their tunes. Every one. Ok, except for the 2 songs that didn’t hit #1. But. You. Know. ALL. The. Words. to the rest of them.

So maybe we should give old McC some props for admitting what the rest of us try so hard to hide?

*** to get to The McCain Report, go to the John McCain website, then click on the News & Media pulldown. Select News. When the page comes up, head all the way to the bottom and click on the banner that says

image

Otherwise you won’t find it. Because it turns out that there are actually two blogs on his website; the Blog pulldown takes you to the other one.

Great Game For The Kiddies

No, this is not a parody. This is for reals. Go on, take the test. Just see if you can ”deserve to live” to a decent age by acting anything close to a normal person and not some Turd World Aborigine. Because we all have the same “share” of the earth’s resources you know. Money, effort, technology have nothign to do with it. Um, I noticed there wasn’t anything in there about burning wood, coal, camel dung, etc., for all kinds of heat and cooking. Because, you know, most of those heat resources are free. No, they just want to know how much you spend, you eeeevil capitalist. And there isn’t anything in there about burning down the rain forest, or increasing the world’s deserts because of you and your damn crop destroying goats either. No questions about how many dozen children you and your wives churn out either. Biased much against the west?

Das Bomb --- Das Boom!

1000kg UneXlodedBomb Detonated in London

A bit of leftover ordnance from WWII - a 2200lb Luftwaffe bomb that was dropped during the Blitz - was found in London earlier this week by construction workers dredging a canal as part of the preparations for the 2012 Olympics.

Royal Army engineers had tried to defuse the bomb for several days, at one point placing large magnets on the iron casing when they thought they heard ticking inside. The first plan was to defuse the bomb but that proved impossible. The second plan was to cut open the casing and inject some kind of chemical which would liquify the explosives inside, causing them to become inert. That too failed. Finally an “igloo” of sand and stone was built over the bomb and it was detonated after clearing the area. This was the largest bomb found in England in over 30 years.

It’s not uncommon for World War II-era bombs to be unearthed in Europe. In London, which suffered the aerial bombardment of the Blitz, bombs are uncovered two or three times a year

“Royal Engineers and partner agencies have been incredibly heroic and have worked extremely hard to defuse the bomb, and we’re all working to resolve this issue with minimum disruption to Londoners as soon as possible”.

image

5 feet long and 2 feet across, the old bomb contained 1000lbs of explosives

An Army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on the 2,200-pound German warhead at 5:55 p.m. (12:55 p.m. ET) Friday, London’s Metropolitan Police said. Video of the blast showed brown dirt, debris and black smoke shooting into the air when the bomb went off.

There were no reports of any injuries or damage to surrounding property after the blast, the police and Ministry of Defense said. The public was allowed back into the industrial neighborhood by Friday night, authorities said.

Two subway lines and a rail line in the area, which were shut down after construction crews discovered the bomb Monday, were running normal service Saturday, transportation officials said.

Just horsing around

KILLER PONIES ON THE LOOSE !!!

Connecticut Cops: Girl Walking Pony to School Breached Peace
WESTPORT, Conn. — Cocoa the pony may have been quiet, but police in Connecticut say a high school student and her father were breaching the peace.

Sarah Friedson walked her chocolate-colored pony to Westport’s Staples High School to celebrate the last day of classes Friday. Her father, Ronald, drove behind them with his blinkers flashing.

The school called police, citing safety concerns and saying the Friedsons ignored warnings not to bring the animal. Ronald Friedson says the pony is docile and not dangerous.

Sarah Friedson, who said she will be attending summer school to earn enough credits to graduate in August, said school officials told her she would likely be suspended for 10 days.

“I really didn’t think it was going to blow out of proportion like this,” she said. “It’s not like I brought him into the school, I didn’t.”

Breaching the peace is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

A message left late Friday for school Superintendent Elliott Landon was not immediately returned.

Isn’t Westport part of the horsey set? So what’s the big deal? I don’t recall anything about ponies in those Zero Tolerance rules. This is just more stupid from the left. Of course, she was told not to ahead of time.

A Little Support for Bush

Again, sort of via Power Line, this article by the blog’s author in today’s NY Post:

Bush vs Terror Attacks: A WIN

It’s an article of faith on the left that the Bush administration has done nothing that has enhanced our security - rather, its alleged blunders have only contributed to the number of jihadists who want to attack us.

Empirically, however, something clearly has made us safer since 2001. Successful attacks on the United States and its interests overseas have not increased, as had been widely predicted, but instead dwindled to virtually nothing.

A steady stream of terrorist attacks on America and US interests abroad were launched from the 1980s forward. A partial history:

1988: Marine Lt.-Col. William Higgins, chief of the UN Truce Force in Lebanon, murdered by Hezbollah. Pan Am flight 103 blown up, killing 270, including a number of US military personnel.

1991: American University in Beirut bombed.

1993: Pakistani terrorist kills two agents and wounds three outside CIA headquarters. World Trade Center bombed, killing six and injuring more than 1,000.

1995: Operation Bojinka, al Qaeda’s plan to blow up 12 airliners over the Pacific, discovered. Five Americans killed in attack on US Army office in Saudi Arabia.

1996: Truck bomb at Khobar Towers kills 19 American servicemen and injures 240.

1997: Terrorists murder four American oil-company employees in Pakistan.

and the list, a LONG list, goes on and on ...  but Post-9/11, things have somehow changed

2003: Suicide bombings in Saudi Arabia kill 36 Americans.

2004: No successful attacks by terrorist groups inside the United States or against American interests abroad.

2005, 2006, 2007: No successful terror attacks inside the US or against US interests abroad.

2008: So far, no successful attacks inside the US or against US interests abroad.

(The above list omits a few “lone wolves” like the DC snipers - because the issue here is organized terrorism.)

He then lists quite a few reasons why. That Article of Faith on the left is more like an Article of Bullshit. What else is new?

Man arrested in Virginia - a case of fishticuffs

Assault with fish lands man in jail

A series of incidents involving a fish and his own private parts landed a Fredericksburg man in jail Sunday, police said.
City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the suspect’s troubles started Saturday about 8:30 a.m. at the 7-Eleven on Dixon Street.
Three people were at the gas pumps when the suspect entered the store. The witnesses said they noticed the suspect because he was singing very loudly.
A 40-year-old man was looking at the suspect when he came out of the store still being loud. This caught the attention of the suspect, who picked up a rock and hit the man in the neck.

Bledsoe said the man’s 32-year-old friend then got out of the car and confronted the suspect about throwing the rock. The suspect grabbed a fish out of his car and hit the friend in the face with it.

The suspect threw a beer bottle onto the vehicle at the gas pump, which belonged to the fish victim’s girlfriend. Witnesses said he dropped his pants and flashed his private parts to all three.
The suspect, who the victims said they didn’t know, drove off before police arrived. But Bledsoe said police got a photo from the store’s security camera and took it around the neighborhood.
Residents identified the suspect as 21-year-old Marcellus Coleman. On Sunday, police got a tip that Coleman was in an abandoned house on Myrick Street.

Police found him there and took him into custody. Bledsoe said that as Coleman was being led to the police cruiser, he spit on a resident who he apparently believed informed police of his whereabouts. The spitting led to an assault charge. Coleman was also charged with malicious wounding, destruction of property and indecent exposure. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

It is not known at this time if Coleman had a CCF permit or if his fish was illegal.  Rumors are that he will also be charged with Assault With An Embarassing Weapon. Local city mayors have expressed concern about the trade in illegal fish coming into Virginia from the Delaware Bay area. Local Fredricksburg laws require all fish to be deboned and kept in locked refridgerators, and all fish stolen or thrown out due to stankiness must be reported to the EPA within 24 hours.

Something Else To Remember

Democrat President John F. Kennedy is lauded as a civil rights advocate.  In reality, Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil rights Act while he was a senator, as did Democrat Senator Al Gore, Sr.  After he became president, John F. Kennedy opposed the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King that was organized by A. Phillip Randolph who was a black Republican.  President Kennedy, through his brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated by the FBI on suspicion of being a Communist in order to undermine Dr. King.
In March of 1968, while referring to Dr. King’s leaving Memphis, Tennessee after riots broke out where a teenager was killed, Democrat Senator Robert Byrd, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, called Dr. King a “trouble-maker” who starts trouble, but runs like a coward after trouble is ignited.  A few weeks later, Dr. King returned to Memphis and was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Go read the rest, and more.

Speaking of Civil Rights

DC Mayor and Chief of Police to wall off ghettos

Stung by an outbreak of violence, including eight killings last weekend alone, police are taking the unusual step of establishing vehicle checkpoints in a crime-ridden neighborhood in the nation’s capital.

Starting Saturday night, officers will check drivers’ ID and turn away any who don’t have a “legitimate purpose” in the area - a plan that has drawn swift criticism from civil liberties groups.

“The Constitution and the Bill of Rights should not become the next victim of the street violence,” said Johnny Barnes, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union for the National Capital Area. “This plan will treat every resident of that area the way criminals are treated.”

The checkpoints come as police try to combat a spike in the number of homicides, which rose 7 percent in the city in 2007 after several years of decline. Most of last weekend’s slayings occurred in the 5th Police District in the city’s northeast section, where authorities plan to set up the checkpoints. Already this year, the police district has had 22 killings - one more than in all of 2007.

“The reality is, this is a neighborhood that has been the scene of many violent crimes, and something had to be done,” D.C. police spokeswoman Traci Hughes said.

But the initiative has raised the ire of the ACLU, which plans to watch what happens with the checkpoints before deciding on any legal action.

Officers will stop motorists traveling through the main thoroughfare of Trinidad - a neighborhood of mostly tidy two-story brick rowhouses that includes Gallaudet University and is near the National Arboretum.

Police will ask motorists to show proof that they live in the area. If they do not have proof, drivers must explain whether they have a reason to be in the neighborhood, such as a doctor’s appointment or a church visit.

Police will only search cars if they observe the presence of guns or drugs, officials said. Anyone who does not cooperate will be arrested.

The checkpoints will be enforced at random hours for at least five days, though they could be extended to 10 days, police said. Pedestrians will not be subject to the checkpoints.

So one more Civil Right taken away from everyone by the two little leftist tyrants running the nation’s capitol city. And the ACLU is going to sit back and watch how things go before they decide to protest. Because, you know, the right to go where you want when you want without having to show ID or prove reason really has nothing to do with being American. Oh wait, this junta ruling only affects them drug dealin, ho runnin, lazy, shiftless no count niggers in the ghetto? Never mind then.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!

Mayor Adrian Fenty and Police Chief Cathy Lanier should be instantly fired. Yes, the poor areas in DC are 3rd world battlezones. This is not the way to deal with the problem. This can NOT be done. Protesters should be queueing up by the thousand. Smart presidentail candidates should be having carefully scripted public fits of apoplexy.

The proposal has the provisional support of D.C. Councilman Harry “Tommy” Thomas, D-Ward 5, whose ward has become a war zone.

“They’re really going to crack down on what we believe to be a systemic problem with open-air drug markets,” Thomas told The Examiner.

Thomas said, though, that he worried about D.C. “moving towards a police state.”

Oh, I get it. Because the Councilman is black, that makes this Ok then? What the Hell people, what the hell?? And Thomas is “worried”? What for? The place already is a police state. Idiots. All of them. Total idiots.

Today in GOP History

On this day in 1956, judge Frank Johnson, along with another judge, ruled in favor of Rosa Parks and struck down the Democrats’ “blacks in the back of the bus” law in Montgomery, Alabama.

Judge Johnson decided in this case, Browder v Gale, that the shortcomings of Separate But Equal found in Brown v Topeka Board of Education to apply to schools, also applied to public transportation.

Johnson had been Eisenhower’s campaign manager in 1952. At some point after the election Eisenhower appointed him to the federal bench.

Frank Johnson “the judge who shaped Civil Rights”

At the height of the civil rights struggle, there was one place in the Deep South where African Americans fighting the region’s oppressive system of racial segregation could count on sure, impartial justice: Frank M. Johnson’s courtroom. With unblinking moral courage, Judge Frank M. Johnson upheld the Constitution and the law, insisting that all Americans be treated equally, regardless of color.

Judge Johnson’s fidelity to the Constitution did not endear him to his neighbors. The judge was denounced and threatened. His neighbors burned a cross on his lawn, his wife and children were ostracized and harassed, but Frank Johnson would not back down, even after the Ku Klux Klan bombed his mother’s house.

A native Alabaman, Frank M. Johnson served as a federal judge for 44 years and lived to see centuries of oppressive customs overturned, and the state and the region he loved transformed. Segregation is now an almost unbelievable chapter of America’s past, thanks to the efforts of thousands of brave men and women who fought for civil rights, and a handful of courageous public servants like Frank M. Johnson.

Judge Johnson later fought the KKK in court, and ordered the first desegregation of bus depots, and later schools.

Rosa Parks and Judge Johnson

So we have another landmark case that added momentum to the whole Civil Rights movement decided by a Republican. How is it again the the Democrats have a lock on the Black Vote?

HABSBURG EMPIRE, LAST ARMY VETERAN …..  A REBUTTAL

Although this was posted under comments a day or so ago, I thought there were some points raised, many I was unaware of, and points I hope I have answered in the Summary.

I have no intention of re-fighting WW1 or even getting into the politics of the era.  But the person writing this apparently knows something about the history of the period, and I thought it should be posted here in this format.

image

OK, Pieper, I hate to say this to you, but just because someone opposes the EU does NOT mean they are on our side. For the love of God, please know who the person is BEFORE you link about them, because you will get taken in otherwise.

This article is something that smells of Hapsburg Royalist bias to me. The article conveniently “forgets” several facts. For one, the reason the US (and indeed, the rest of the old WWI Western Allies) “shamefully” opposed Karl I’s attempt to take the Hungarian Throne in favor of Horthy (who, admittedly was little but a scumbag dictator)in 1921 was not because the mean Allies decided to pick on pwoor wittle Kawl because of what his father (the infamous Franz Joseph) did.

It was because Karl I came to Hungary in 1921 with the STATED INTENT of recreating some vestige of A Habsburg Empire , and the fact remains that he was more than willing to do so. And with the Hungarian military (which lagged behind the Western Allies during the interbullum, but was perhaps the best regional military during the 20’s, and was a foe that could not be ignored) , rallied to his banner, he was capable of doing so as well.

His mere act of ascending the throne was likely to spark a war with the “Little Entente” of Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia, who were fearful of the territorial claims Karl had on them, and how eager he was to seize them, if necessary by force of arms. In addition, just across the border from Hungary was Austria, the ancestral home of the Habsburgs. A dynastic revival in Hungary would likely have emboldened the none-too-weak Royalist part of the Austrian populace, and it is VERY likely that Karl would have eventually turned his Habsburg Hungarian military on Austria to try to reunify the heartland of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. And it was NOT on in the interests of the Allies to have a w war going on that was started by someone who was your sworn enemy only three years ago who was trying to resurrect an empire that Hundreds of thousands of Italians, Greeks, British, French, and Serbs (to say nothing about the pre-Revolution Russian losses, which were, if anything, higher) gave their lives to dismantle.

Say what you will about Horthy, but he at least did not start his saber rattling until sixteen years later, after he made an alliance with Hitler. And there was no way the Allies of 1921 could have known that.

As it was, Horthy was able to disperse Karl’s supporters with relatively little blood after a mobilization by the “Little Entente”, thus avoiding the likelihood of a regional war igniting. I am no Wilson apologist for his muddeling of Versailles, but even I have to admit that he made more than a few correct calls on the situation.

Also, contrary to Europe’s grandest days being under the “Glittering monarchies of the Bourbons and Habsburgs”, Europe was largely under the heel of backwards royal despotism during that period, where the state and the crown are quite literally God on Earth, and woe be to anyone who disagrees. Remember, you cannot see the glitter if you are but a lowly pleb, and that would be 98+% of of us.

In fact, if anything, Europe’s zenith was in the 1920’s,where (in spite of underlying issues), Imperial imperfect Democracies such as Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, and Holland had colonial empires that spanned the world.

Other than that, I must say that, even if he was on the side of the Hapsburg Monarchy and its tyrannical German Cousin, it it is sad to see him go. We are almost at the centennial mark of WWI, and the final veterans are not even in the ground while our dear “Friends” in the Left are spinning an alternate history regarding WWI, with “Gems” like Oh What a Lovely piece of Grandstanding C*** by Littlewood, which conveniently ignores the fact that the Kaiserreich was not and had never been a beacon of Enlightenment.

Why? Because WWI was a true quagmire (especially on the Western Front) where millions perished, and it serves the idea of these more rabid Leftists who try to give the idea that no war is a good war, while conveniently ignoring the military breakthroughs that allowed the Western Allies to total the Central Powers in 1918, and that the victory was over a group of militaristic and authoritarian nations that had never shied away from heinous crimes. If they can turn WWI into a “meaningless, fruitless war”, than they can start to turn others on their head to suit their agenda by using it as a precedent.

Ultimately, I would have to say I am writing this long rant is this: I get what you are doiy: honoring the passing of the last of a country’s generation, who served with honor in a nightmarish conflict, even if it was at the behest of a truly unsavory regime. However, I can practically imagine some scumbag at DKos or HuffPo taking this out of context to say that the Neocons endorse the absolutist regime of the Habsburgs. So please, I beg of you to issue a statement repudiating the Pro-Habsburg sentiment in this article, while still respecting the “Emperor’s Last Soldier.”

PS: Sorry for the Rant

Security van makes 120 mile trip to escort prisoner 200 yards in Northampton
By Nick Britten
Last Updated: 10:24PM BST 05/06/2008

A security van was sent on a 120-mile round trip to move a prisoner 200 yards to avoid breaching his human rights.

Mark Bailey, 35, was taken to a Crown Court but after a brief hearing sent immediately to the magistrates’ court across the road.

Police said Bailey could not be walked across the street in handcuffs because it would breach his human rights - so a van was scrambled from 60 miles away for the 30 second journey.

Campaigners and MPs branded the decision “a shocking waste of money” and said it was “no wonder” Britain’s criminal justice system was in such a state of chaos.

Bailey appeared from custody before Northampton Crown Court Tuesday morning charged with stealing cable from a railway line.

A judge decided it was better dealt with by magistrates and Bailey was ordered to appear the same day. However, by this time the prison van had gone.

Police refused to walk him across Victoria Road, which separates the buildings, so a van was called from Cambridge, 57 miles away, to pick him up and drop him off.

He finally arrived at the magistrates’ court two hours and 40 minutes after the van was called. Charged with theft and going equipped, Bailey, from Northampton, was remanded in custody.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire police said it would “not be appropriate” to walk a prisoner down a public street.

She said: “Once a person is in the courts system, they are no longer in police custody and police are not responsible for their transportation.

“It would not be appropriate for prisoners to walk in a public area while in custody for many reasons, including public safety issues, as well as the safety and human rights of the prisoner.

“Until someone has been convicted of an offence they are innocent in the eyes of the law and it would therefore be inappropriate for them to be escorted across a busy main road in handcuffs.”

Brian Binley, Conservative MP for Northampton South, said: “I’ve never heard such nonsense. Why we should have to suffer such ludicrous incompetence, and pay for it, is beyond me.

“In my view, Bailey should have been escorted across the road but if they were worried about him absconding, they could have put him in a squad car - the police station is just around the corner.”

Matthew Elliott, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, added: “This is absurd and a total waste of money.

“No wonder our prisons are in such a state of chaos, if they can’t even manage to escort a prisoner 200 yards between buildings.

“If anyone had shown a bit of initiative this could have been sorted out in five minutes, but instead taxpayers had to foot the bill for this wasteful trek.”

A barrister at the court - who wishes to remain anonymous - said: “The transport of prisoners to court is ludicrous and a joke.”

A spokesman for Global Solutions Limited, responsible for the movement and security of prisoners, said: “It was an unplanned movement and the van had gone to do other things. It is not a taxi service and has a range of duties to make best use of taxpayers’ money.

“It is more efficient doing it this way than having a load of vehicles sitting around outside court just in case.” He said he did not know whether the van came from Cambridge.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
