The Short Road to Serfdom

image

“Their message to American gun owners is simple: ‘It will happen to you, if you let it’”.

Stay with this one to the end.  There are a number of testimonies that you need to hear.

“Once you have registration, the police will know what you have, then you will loose it.”

**Update:  Sorry about the “autoplay” for that video.  Here is a link to that file

Bush=Putin

Those Krazy Kos Kids are a never-ending source of laughter.  We had the story this morning about Putin not wanting to give up his power.

One of the diarists at TheDailyKos, ProudBushBasher, is convinced our President will do exactly the same thing.

Did you read that Putin, because he can’t run for another term as President, has figured out how he is going to maintain power.  He is basically making sure his friend and lacky becomes President, then his friend makes him Prime Minister, then they change the constitution so that the Prime Minister has all the power and the President becomes a figurehead.

Does anyone really think that Bush is going to give up the power of the Presidency when his term is over? Do you THINK that Cheney is ever going to leave that office to someone else? Do you think that Cheney is going to leave a trail behind that someone else will be able to go through?  Do you think these people want a new President and Vice President of another party to GO THROUGH the mess they have left over the past eight years?

Somehow they will accomplish stay in office. Just like Putin is doing. They will figure someway to stop the election. Karl Rove is out there now. Lurking through the society plotting some scheme to keep Bush in office. If you remember… Sept 11, 2001 was the day of the Democrat Primary in NYC.  They obviously could not hold that election in NYC that day.

Rudy, our Knight in Shining armor, then decided that he was the only one who could lead us.  Rudy then proposed we should cancel the election and keep him in office!!  He did NOT want to give up power and was using FEAR as a tactic to keep himself in power despite the charter of the city!  Thank God that idea was shot down.  But he did try.

What if the same thing happens with Bush and Cheney?  Do you really think that Bush will go back to Texas to clear brush off his Crawford ranch?

And what do his readers think about this proposition?  Happily, its not an absolute sweep, but close.

Will George Bush and Cheney leave office in Jan 09?

Military Rules

My brother, the leatherneck, forwarded this to me:

Marine Corps Rules:
1.  Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
2.  Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.
3.  Have a plan.
4.  Have a back-up plan, because the first one probably won’t work.
5.  Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
6.  Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a ‘4.’
7.  Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
8.  Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral & diagonal preferred.)
9.  Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
10. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect your flank.
11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
13. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating your intention to shoot.

Special Forces Rules:
1.  Look very cool in sunglasses.
2.  Kill every living thing within view.
3.  Adjust your speedo.
4.  Check hair in mirror.

Army Rangers Rules:
1.  Walk in 50 miles wearing a 75 pound rucksack, while starving.
2.  Locate individuals requiring killing.
3.  Request permission via radio from Higher-ups, to perform the killing.
4.  Curse bitterly when mission is aborted.
5.  Walk out 50 miles wearing a 75 pound rucksack while starving.

US Army Rules:
1.  Curse bitterly when receiving operational order.
2.  Make sure there is extra ammo and extra coffee.
3.  Curse bitterly.
4.  Curse bitterly some more.
5.  Do not listen to 2nd LTs; it can get you killed.
6.  Curse bitterly.

Air Force Rules:
1.  Have a cocktail.
2.  Adjust temperature on air-conditioner.
3.  See what’s on HBO.
4.  Ask ‘What is a gunfight?’
5.  Request more funding from Congress, with a ‘killer’ Power Point presentation.
6.  Wine & dine ‘’key’ Congressmen, invite DOD & defense industry executives.
7.  Receive funding, set up new command and assemble assets.
8.  Declare the assets ‘strategic’ and never deploy them operationally.
9.  Hurry to make 13:45 tee time.
10. Make sure the base is as far as possible from the conflict but close enough to have a tax exemption.

Navy Rules:
1.  Go to Sea.
2.  Drink Coffee.
3.  Deploy Marines

Before you go jumping my case, remember that this came from a Marine LOL

PM Pooty-Poot

Via Right Wing News.

Before you read this, cue the Imperial March from Star Wars so that you’ll have appropriate background music,

President Vladimir Putin, in a surprise announcement, opened the door Monday to becoming Russia’s prime minister and retaining power when his presidential term ends next year.

The popular Putin is barred from seeking a third consecutive term in the March presidential election, but has strongly indicated he would seek to keep a hand on Russia’s reins after he steps down.

Putin’s remarks Monday at a congress of the dominant, Kremlin-controlled United Russia party hint at a clear scenario in which he could remake himself as a powerful prime minister and eclipse a weakened president.

Putin, 54, told United Russia that his name will top its ticket in Dec. 2 parliamentary elections — a huge show of support from a president who has always sought to remain above the grit of party politics.

He called a proposal that he become prime minister “entirely realistic,” but added that it was still “too early to think about it.” For him to consider it, he said, first United Russia would have to win the elections and Russia elect as president a “decent, competent, effective, modern person with whom it would be possible to work in tandem.”

Putin’s name on the ticket will make the first task much easier. Laden with top officials who can use the media, law enforcement and other levers to pressure opponents and influence voting, the party already has a huge advantage. And Putin’s powerful support could ensure it retains the two-thirds majority needed in the State Duma, or lower house of parliament, to approve changes in the constitution.

Putin’s move points to the possibility that the constitution could be changed to shift power from the presidency to the government, which he would lead as prime minister.

“The most logical way for Putin’s team to fulfill its main goal — to step down but stay in power — is to change the constitution” to strengthen the prime minister and his Cabinet, political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin said in an interview. “The president would become a decorative figure.”

Like John says, the Russian people, after a generation of communist rule, don’t have the spirit of freedom in them yet.  WIll this get a fight?  It doesn’t look that way.

Who Needs Fact Checkers Anyway?

Certainly not the Washington Post.  Seems they just take whatever Fatah gives them and slurps it down.

From the Jerusalem Post’s story:

As the Jerusalem Post’s Palestinian affairs correspondent Khaled Abu Toameh reported Monday, over the weekend he and the newspaper fell victim to a Fatah hoax. Saturday, Abu Toameh was “summoned” to Fatah’s General Intelligence headquarters in Ramallah where he was given a “scoop” - a graphic videotape of the murder of a 16-year-old girl in July perpetrated as a so-called “honor killing.” The Fatah officer in Ramallah supplied Abu Toameh with the phone numbers of two “eye-witnesses” to the episode who would corroborate the story.

It later worked out that the “eye-witnesses” were Fatah militiamen in Gaza. The story was a fabrication. The video was taken in Iraq in April. The purpose of the elaborately crafted tale was clear. Fatah wished to use the Post to project itself as a credible, moderate actor battling the forces of evil and darkness in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Abu Toameh had written up the story and it appeared on The Jerusalem Post’s Web site on Saturday night. It was removed when the Post was alerted to the hoax and did not appear in the Sunday paper.

Sounds fair. They put it up on their website in good faith, and then when they found out it was a hoax, immediately pulled it.  What about the WaPo?

SPEAKING to The Washington Post on Thursday, Abbas used the story to explain why Israel should feel comfortable giving Fatah all of Judea and Samaria and half of Jerusalem. Responding to a question regarding his view of Israel’s concern that areas transferred to Palestinian control will be used as operational bases for carrying out attacks against its cities Abbas said, “Last night, [our security forces] seized two rockets. We handed [them] over to the Israelis. We are very worried about these deeds and I think we can put an end to all this. Our security apparatus is ready to stop all kinds of violence.”

The Washington Post published the interview without noting that the story was a total fabrication. The “rockets” that Fatah transferred to the IDF were just a pile of metal pipes which had apparently been used as toys by local children. The IDF had already noted that the rockets weren’t real when The Washington Post conducted its interview with Abbas. Unlike Abu Toameh and The Jerusalem Post, The Washington Post and its veteran reporter Lally Weymouth saw no reason to mention that Abbas’s anti-terror credentials were based on nothing but lies manufactured by his own propaganda arms.

No reason to do that.  After all, the story, as reported, fits perfectly into their model and mold.  Nothing to see here folks, just move along.

Minor Housekeeping

Back in August, I told you I wanted to update the design a little, mostly cleanup and such.  Well, I have not had too much time to spend on it, but after reconnecting with an old friend today, I was inspired to at least do a little bit.

I still have all of your suggestions and links from that thread and will incorporate them as we go along, but for today I’ve made just a couple of changes:

The next things on the list for me are:

Of course, if you have any other suggestions, send them on...I’m open to anything being on the table.

End of an Era

Final Bow

Cox & Forkum are giving up on editorial cartoons.

With mixed emotions I announce: John and I will no longer be producing editorial cartoons. John will continue posting his work at his blog, John Cox Art, and he and I will continue working together on various projects, but there will be no more regularly scheduled editorial cartoons. The Web site will remain running indefinitely, as a means to market our books and as an archive of our work.

While I understand the pressures of trying to keep a “day job” as well as provide quality content, I’m sure going to miss their laser-sharp targeting of the issues with a one-panel drawing.

Good luck guys, we’ll sure miss you.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
