Some Mormon humor

The LDS Church (Mormon) has been undergoing some heightened scrutiny due to the candidacy of Gov. Mitt Romney. Few seem to recall that Senate Majority [cough] Leader [guffaw] Harry Reid is also Mormon. One hopes that Romney and Reid are two completely different types of Mormon.  gulp Reid is such a slimy, yellow-bellied, backstabbing, phoney American… but I digress.

A little background…

Mormons perform certain sacred ordinances in their temples. In order to enter a temple, you must have a temple recommend. To receive one of these, you have an interview with your bishop wherein you are asked highly personal questions about your moral behavior.

In the following cartoon, Mrs. Harry Reid is being interviewed by her bishop.

Hope Pat Bagley doesn’t get upset with me for using his cartoon this way.  red face And Pat, if you should come by here, would you autograph my copy of I Am Appalled? THX.

US Appears Guilty of Torture: Pelosi

Yahoo News

The United States appears to be illegally torturing terror suspects contrary to denials by President George W. Bush, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday.

The country’s highest ranking Democrat also said that she still hoped to get most US troops out of Iraq by the end of 2008, despite the party’s repeated failure to win over enough Republicans in Congress to an exit strategy.

Interviewed on Fox News Sunday, Pelosi said reported interrogation tactics such as simulated drowning, head slapping and exposure to extreme temperatures all amounted to banned torture.

“There is a legal definition of torture that I believe this would fit. The president says it is not,” she said.

Oh. My.....*trails off cause otherwise she’s going to cuss. A LOT*

What the bloody hell is WRONG with this *shuddertwitchspasmcoughgag* woman!?!??! Head slapping? Exposure to extreme temperatures? THAT’S torture? WTF?

Death and Taxes

You may have seen the story floating around the past few months about a couple in PLainfied, New Hampshire who were holed up on their 103 acre property for tax evasion.  Word is they were ”successfully brought in” yesterday without incident, even though they vowed to have a violent conflict if they were to be taken by force.

Their commercial interests had already been seized by the authorities and now they face jail time and the probable loss of all they own.

This brings up a topic near and dear to my heart: Property Rights.

What?  You may ask.

I maintain that when the government can take your property at the point of a gun, then you don’t actually have any rights to it at all.  You are simply renting it at the pleasure of the government.  You her a lot about the “crackpots” who don’t believe in taxes, and most of them are just that: crackpots.  But I have done some reading in the past from some people who have very compelling arguments for why are current tax law is completely FUBAR.

If you could prove that there was no legal way to fill out your 1040 tax form, would it be legal to refuse to do so?  What if, by simply signing the form you could be accused of breaking another law?

What if it could be reasonably shown that the current tax law is unconstitutional?

I maintain that it is entirely reasonable to assume both of these cases could well exist.  The penalty for breaking the tax law is confiscation and prison.  They take more money (fines and penalties) and put you in prison (if you don’t pay what they say you owe) and will finally take all you own to pay off this “debt”.  Can you fight it?  Do you have the resources to fight a set of laws so complex that even those who work for the IRS and are responsible to interpreting the rules can’t agree.  Ask them a question on a subtle point five times and chances are good you will get at least three variations of an answer.

Have you followed all of the tax laws?  To the letter?  To everyone’s interpretation?

The problem is, no one in power is motivated to change it.  The current law is set up in such a way that it enables them to use it for their own power gains.

The Fair Tax IS the answer.  Plain and simple, it fixes the problem.  No, it is not the panecea and John Linder is not omnicient, but it is the only thing that will restore power back to the people as well as finance the government.  Those who have studied it and understand it (which isn’t hard...you can do it in an hour) all agree that it is fair, simple and revolutionary.

Which is why career politicians are against it.  It is why they can’t argue the points of the plan, but resort instead to ad-hominem and strawman attacks instead.  If you are serious about personal property rights.  If you are serious about an out-of-control power structure in the IRS.  If you care about how the tax burdon is crippling this country, you need to do your homework and study this plan until you understand it.  When you do, you will be an ardent supporter.

Strip Searches in Idaho

Literally.

Woman told to ditch bra to enter court
Underwire supports of garment had set off alarm at federal facility

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho - Security guards refused to allow a woman into a federal courthouse until she removed a bra that triggered a metal detector.

Lori Plato said she and her husband, Owen Plato, were stunned when U.S. Marshals Service employees asked her to remove her bra after the underwire supports set off the alarm.

“I asked if I could go into the bathroom because they didn’t have a privacy screen and no women security officers were available,” Plato said Wednesday. “They said, ‘No.’

“I wasn’t carrying a shank in my bra. If it’s so dangerous, why did they give it back and let me put it on?”

Patrick McDonald, the U.S. Marshal in Boise, said appropriate security protocols were followed in the Sept. 20 matter, and guards suggested she simply remove the bra in her car outside, or find a restaurant bathroom.

“She’s inflating it,” McDonald said. “All of a sudden she just took it off. It wasn’t anything we wanted to happen and it wasn’t anything we asked for her to do. She did it so fast.”

Plato, of Bonners Ferry, said she was parked on a busy street and wasn’t familiar with downtown Coeur d’Alene businesses. So her husband held up his coat to shield her from the rest of the people in the courthouse lobby while she removed her bra underneath her shirt.

Not generally a security threat
Generally, McDonald said, undergarments aren’t considered a danger to security.

“I don’t think they’re considered a weapon, really, the last time I looked,” he said.

He declined to discuss other ways the federal courthouse guards could have screened Plato for weapons.

Plato wants the Marshals Service to apologize and stop forcing women to disrobe.

“It was very humiliating,” her husband, Owen Plato, said. “They could have handled it with a much more professional attitude.”

Maybe the guard was hoping to do a pat down instead?

Can We Question Their Patriotism Now?

Two stories are making the rounds this morning.

First, we see that Barak Osama Obama has decided to not wear an American Flag pin on his lapel.

An eagle-eyed reporter for the ABC affiliate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, noticed something missing from Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama’s, D-Ill., lapels.

“You don’t have the American flag pin on. Is that a fashion statement?” the reporter asked, at the end of a brief interview with Obama on Wednesday. “Those have been on politicians since Sept. 12, 2001.”

The standard political reply to that question might well have been, “My patriotism speaks for itself.”

But Obama didn’t say that.

Instead the Illinois senator answered the question at length, explaining that he no longer wears such a pin, at least in part, because of the Iraq War.

“You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin,” Obama said. “Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest.

Wolf Pangloss asks a great question:

Symbols are important. They are not meaningless. Does Obama take off his wedding ring when he has a fight with his wife? Does he remove his wedding ring as a protest against the empty symbolism of the ring, instead explaining to every Obama girl how he loves his wife and is
committed to his marriage? Wouldn’t that explanation work better if he kept a ring on his finger?

The second story is from a Fox News poll that shows one out of five Democrats think the wolrd would be better off if we lost the war.

NEW YORK — Nearly one out of every five Democrats thinks the world will be better off if America loses the war in Iraq, according to the FOX News Opinion Dynamics Poll released Thursday.

The percentage of Democrats (19 percent) who believe that is nearly four times the number of Republicans (5 percent) who gave the same answer. Seven percent of independents said the world would be better off if the U.S. lost the war.

Click here for results of the poll.

Overall, 11 percent of Americans think the world would be “better off” if the U.S. lost the war, and 73 percent disagree.

I kinda thought that wishing for your country to be defeated was the antithesis to being a patriot, but maybe I’m out of touch.

Break Out The Long Underwear

With the track record of weather prognosticators, that is my recommendation after seeing this.

Warmer than average’ U.S. winter predicted

NEW YORK - Long-range weather forecasts are predicting a warmer than average winter with less precipitation for much of the United States except the Pacific Northwest.

“It will be a lot like last year but the climate models are even more in agreement now than they were last fall,” said Mike Halpert, head of forecast operations at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center.

The Light Comes On For A Liberal

Way to go Jonathan, maybe some others in your camp will finally see the light.  (quoting the whole thing in case it gets “moved")

A liberal’s lament: The NRA might be right after all

By Jonathan Turley

This term, the Supreme Court may finally take up the Voldemort Amendment, the part of the Bill of Rights that shall not be named by liberals. For more than 200 years, progressives and polite people have avoided acknowledging that following the rights of free speech, free exercise of religion and free assembly, there is “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” Of course, the very idea of finding a new individual right after more than two centuries is like discovering an eighth continent in constitutional law, but it is hardly the cause of celebration among civil liberties groups.

Like many academics, I was happy to blissfully ignore the Second Amendment. It did not fit neatly into my socially liberal agenda. Yet, two related cases could now force liberals into a crisis of conscience. The Supreme Court is expected to accept review of District of Columbia v. Heller and Parker v. District of Columbia, involving constitutional challenges to the gun-control laws in Washington.

The D.C. law effectively bars the ownership of handguns for most citizens and places restrictions on other firearms. The District’s decision to file these appeals after losing in the D.C. appellate court was driven more by political than legal priorities. By taking the appeal, D.C. politicians have put gun-control laws across the country at risk with a court more likely to uphold the rulings than to reverse them. It has also put the rest of us in the uncomfortable position of giving the right to gun ownership the same fair reading as more favored rights of free press or free speech.

The Framers’ intent

Principle is a terrible thing, because it demands not what is convenient but what is right. It is hard to read the Second Amendment and not honestly conclude that the Framers intended gun ownership to be an individual right. It is true that the amendment begins with a reference to militias: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Accordingly, it is argued, this amendment protects the right of the militia to bear arms, not the individual.

Yet, if true, the Second Amendment would be effectively declared a defunct provision. The National Guard is not a true militia in the sense of the Second Amendment and, since the District and others believe governments can ban guns entirely, the Second Amendment would be read out of existence.

Another individual right

More important, the mere reference to a purpose of the Second Amendment does not alter the fact that an individual right is created. The right of the people to keep and bear arms is stated in the same way as the right to free speech or free press. The statement of a purpose was intended to reaffirm the power of the states and the people against the central government. At the time, many feared the federal government and its national army. Gun ownership was viewed as a deterrent against abuse by the government, which would be less likely to mess with a well-armed populace.

Considering the Framers and their own traditions of hunting and self-defense, it is clear that they would have viewed such ownership as an individual right — consistent with the plain meaning of the amendment.

None of this is easy for someone raised to believe that the Second Amendment was the dividing line between the enlightenment and the dark ages of American culture. Yet, it is time to honestly reconsider this amendment and admit that ... here’s the really hard part ... the NRA may have been right. This does not mean that Charlton Heston is the new Rosa Parks or that no restrictions can be placed on gun ownership. But it does appear that gun ownership was made a protected right by the Framers and, while we might not celebrate it, it is time that we recognize it.

Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University and a member of USA TODAY’s board of contributors.

Something we’ve all known for a long, long time, but nice to see a “enlightened progressive” get it too.

A Marine Hero Supports the War

Here’s a counterpoint to our friends at Chalk4Peace.

Marine Hero: The 5 Things I Saw that Make Me Support the War

Liberals often like to say that “violence is senseless.”

That’s wrong.

Violence isn’t senseless. Senseless violence is senseless. And I should know. Before being awarded the Navy Cross and having the privilege of becoming a Marine, I was a gang member. Sometimes it takes having used violence for both evil as well as good to know that there’s a profound moral difference between the two.

People often ask me whether I still support the war. I never hesitate when answering: “Absolutely I support completing the mission,” I tell them, “Now more than ever.”

I was honored to have been given the opportunity to fight in Iraq on our country’s behalf. And it was that experience—and five things I saw firsthand—that illustrate the foolishness of those who would equate American military power to that used by thugs and tyrants.

He then goes on to detail out his five reasons. These are well-reasoned and presented arguments for why he thinks the war effort is worth it.  Maybe he should create a chalk drawing of each of the reasons in Trafalgar Square with the dirty hippies.

As they say, go read the rest.  Then stand proud with the warriors who protect our way of life.

Breakaway States

What could bring the Liberals in Vermont together with the Rebels of Tennessee?

Secession

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In an unlikely marriage of desire to secede from the United States, two advocacy groups from opposite political traditions — New England and the South — are sitting down to talk.

Tired of foreign wars and what they consider right-wing courts, the Middlebury Institute wants liberal states like Vermont to be able to secede peacefully.

That sounds just fine to the League of the South, a conservative group that refuses to give up on Southern independence.

“We believe that an independent South, or Hawaii, Alaska, or Vermont would be better able to serve the interest of everybody, regardless of race or ethnicity,” said Michael Hill of Killen, Ala., president of the League of the South.

I’m not sure either of them has enough natural or human resources to make this a viable path to go, but more power to them for thinking about it.

The Rush to Condemn - Updated with Response

Trying their best to “Support the Troops”, 41 Donks have decided to comdemn Rush Mimbaugh for something he never said.  Typical.

Here’s the letter they sent to Mark P. Mays, CEO of Clear Channel Communications:

October 2, 2007

Mr. Mark P. Mays
CEO, Clear Channel Communications Inc.
200 East Basse Road
San Antonio, TX 78209

Dear Mr. Mays,

At the time we sign this letter, 3,808 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, and another 28,009 have been wounded. 160,000 others awoke this morning on foreign sand, far from home, to face the danger and uncertainty of another day at war.

Although Americans of goodwill debate the merits of this war, we can all agree that those who serve with such great courage deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. That is why Rush Limbaugh’s recent characterization of troops who oppose the war as “phony soldiers” is such an outrage.

Our troops are fighting and dying to bring to others the freedoms that many take for granted. It is unconscionable that Mr. Limbaugh would criticize them for exercising the fundamentally American right to free speech. Mr. Limbaugh has made outrageous remarks before, but this affront to our soldiers is beyond the pale.

The military, like any community within the United States, includes members both for and against the war. Senior generals, such as General John Batiste and Paul Eaton, have come out against the war while others have publicly supported it. A December 2006 poll conducted by the Military Times found just 35 percent of service members approved of President Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq, compared to 42 percent who disapproved. From this figure alone, it is clear that Mr. Limbaugh’s insult is directed at thousands of American service members.

Active and retired members of our armed forces have a unique perspective on the war and offer a valuable contribution to our national debate. In August, seven soldiers wrote an op-ed expressing their concern with the current strategy in Iraq. Tragically, since then, two of those seven soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq.

Thousands of active troops and veterans were subjected to Mr. Limbaugh’s unpatriotic and indefensible comments on your broadcast. We trust you will agree that not a single one of our sons, daughters, neighbors and friends serving overseas is a “phony soldier.” We call on you to publicly repudiate these comments that call into question their service and sacrifice and to ask Mr. Limbaugh to apologize for his comments.

Sincerely,

Senator Harry Reid, Majority Leader
Senator Richard Durbin, Assistant Majority Leader
Senator Charles Schumer, Vice Chairman, Democratic Conference
Senator Patty Murray, Secretary, Democratic Conference

Congressional Defeatists and Moonbat Vets

Apparently, it isn’t bad enough that the Democrat Moonbats in Congress do not have the ability to read a transcript of Mr. Limbaugh’s post, but now, some leftist group of ass-hats has decided to make a YouTube video of it here.

To warn you, this group of moonbats, called VoteVets.org, like the Democrats and the MoveOn.org weenies that fund them, are also bereft of the ability to read a simple transcript. Apparently, they also don’t listen to a program that they are feeling free to criticize.

Now, granted, unlike the maker of the video, I have not sustained a severe head wound. But it is clear that it has left his ability to read quite intact, as he is clearly reading off a prepared propaganda slide. So why hasn’t he read the transcript of what Mr. Limbaugh really said?

Like the Democraps are, he’s simply taking the opportunity, falsely based as it is, to lash out in an attempt to silence a person who has done great service not only to our entire country, but specifically to our men and women in uniform, and our veterans, of which I am one.

This vicious slander--and slander it is, as it is clearly false and defaming--reeks of revenge, and can only come back to haunt them.

Why is it that any time the Democrats or their liberal cronies are out of arguments and reason (things that they were never in great supply of anyhow) they resort to the ad hominem?

Michelle Malkin is also talking about this. Check it out.

What I’m concerned about is this: What is Congress trying to sneak past us while we are distracted by this Wagging of the Dog? More unwanted immigrations bills? The shipwreck known as the Law of the Sea Treaty? Keep your eyes peeled.

Phobos is also an author at http://toomuchliberty.blogspot.com

Food Stamps for the (somewhat) Poor

Correia is pissed.

This morning I was commuting to work, when the news said something that damn near gave me an aneurism.  Apparently the federal government has just granted $600,000 to the state of Utah so we can give out more food stamps.  Then they quoted some lady from some BS organization like Utahns Against Starvation (arch-nemesis of Utahns For Famine) or something, and how she was saying how super-dooper this was, because there are so many Utahns that are eligible for food stamps, but don’t know it, and how now they can educate them, so that even more people can get government assistance, so that way nobody will go to bed hungry… These are people that make a decent living, but they still qualify for handouts.

WTF?

I’ve seen some of the poorest people in America.  I was a Mormon missionary in what was considered one of the most impoverished areas of the entire country.  I spent a bunch of time in innercity Birmingham and Montgomery, and then saw the rural poor in places like Corinth, Mississippi and areas like that.

And even there, there weren’t exactly people starving.  Even people on every form of government handout imaginable had TVs, phones, and air-conditioning.  Even in the nastiest projects in Birmingham, (which if you’ve seen Black Hawk Down, you know approximately what the Brickyard looked like) there wasn’t exactly a famine.  And if somebody was starving, it was because they were whacked out of their heads on crack, meth, and huffing paint.

Starvation?  How many people actually die of starvation in America?  And then if you take things like child abuse and people lost in the woods out of the equation, how big is the number?  What, four?

Not only that, but the poorest people on food stamps I ever saw still managed to buy name brand things like Pepsi and Doritos.  Wheras I grew up dirt ass poor on a dairy farm, but we worked for a living, so didn’t get crap from the government except for an occasional kick in the groin, and I grew up eating generic Chippos and drinking Shasta.  We did eat lots of steak, but that usually involved me killing it myself.

Oh, but the report got better......

Coolest Model Rocket Evah!

image

Whoa

Andy Woerner and his crazy rocketeer friends have built a 21-foot long X-Wing model that can actually fly. Yes, this is a real X-Wing powered by four solid-fuel rocket engines complete with radio-controlled moving wings. It blasts off in California next week, and we talked with Andy about the project, and how they expect it will do.

For the most impressive part of the project to work, not only does the axis have to be strong enough to support the stress of the launch but also it has to allow the wings to change position from folded to open while in flight—or, in the words of Red Leader, putting them in attack position, the X that gives the Rebel aircraft its name.

The wings, including the root sections and the outer panels are about 8’ long and weigh 60 pounds a piece, including the motors. The motion mechanism had to be able to move all four of these simultaneously, while keeping them in position relative to each other. Additionally, the motion hardware had to be strong enough to keep the wings in position once they were at the extents of their travel.

They used an electric motor from a RC helicopter, reducing its 40,000 revolutions per minute to generate enough torque to move those massive wings. Still, the wings will take 35 seconds to travel from open to closed. Hopefully, they will be able to change before the flight ends, so they can get the full effect in the air.
The wings also hold the engines. Andy told us they are using “four solid rocket motors which are Class M, the kind that produce a red flame"—which as you probably know, it’s also the same color of the X-Wing engines’ glow.

They launch on October 10th.  Man, to be there and watch this thing fly.

Link to the project page.

Hippies on Parade

I’ve gotten on a mailing list for a group called “Chalk 4 Peace”.  I normally just delete them, but I was bored and decided to read it through.  Mind you, I’m not a world-class writer, but I can turn a phrase, compose a fairly well-written letter and communicate fairly effectively with the written word.

This is a different story.  What I find here is a cliche-laced screed that really doesn’t say anything meaningful.  I suppose that passes for communcation these days, but if I was an actual subscriber to their “news”, I would have a hard time deciphering what we were about.  Here’s the email, see what you think. All will be seen for several days by thousands of people, then as they are washed away by the elements WE CAN CONTINUE to find fresh places to Chalk4Peace.

We don’t need to be an artist to Chalk4Peace. Every statement, however small or large becomes part of the amazing tapestry that is our global future.

This unique event conceivably, could be the largest of its kind in
modern history. It is a global effort that is happening.

We The People are spreading the word and making the effort to be a part of this huge creative endeavour to bring Peace back into the equation.

It is our goal for at least one million or more of us to participate
with this sidewalk/pavement chalk extravaganza, at thousands of locations, in as many countries, cities and towns around the world as is possible.

So WHAT CAN YOU DO to help make this happen?

1. NETWORK/POST this email to your friends, contacts and where ever else seems appropriate

2. JOIN the Yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Chalk4Peace

or send a blank email to:
Chalk4Peace-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

To network with others around the world who will be Chalking4Peace.

3. EMAIL:
viziondanz@infinitepossibility.org
to let us know what you are doing in your community, and please send us pictures. Or to find out how you can participate in the project.

4. ARRANGE with you local businesses, libraries, churches, mosques, synagogues, restaurants, supermarkets etc to chalk on the pavement outside their premises on the 15th - 23rd of September and whenever else.

IDENTIFY public squares such as Trafalgar Square in London and invite all your friends and your friends’ friends to show up with a few boxes of chalk, or even get some from your local quarry.

TAKE extra chalk with you to hand out to passers-by.

5. USE this Email as a press release for you local TV, Radio and
Newspapers. Let them know that Chalk4Peace is happening ASAP to get the momentum going.

6. DOCUMENT YOUR Chalk4peace actions with photos and video. Send them to your local media - copies for our website will be greatly appreciated - send to:
viziondanz@infinitepossibility.org

7. ENGAGE co-creatively in local communal efforts, strengthen
working relationships and find what it takes to stand for peace and freedom.

8. Have lots of FUN and keep on Chalking4Peace after the September event.

Lets skip the war bit and just get to the peace

Greet someone new today,
look into their eyes, smile, say hello,
shake their hand ...
LET THE PEACE BEGIN!

“There is nothing wrong with our world,
we are just having a weird conversation”.

“Reclaim the conversation”

“Our New World Order IS Love!”

Dedicated to the child inside each one of us,
All the children and
All the children to come.

Just point at the hippies and laugh.  They’re sweet in a sad sort of way.  Wishing for what cannot come and hoping in the dust of dreams.......

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
