Why Now?

Back from a weekend in Knoxville with my brother, which explains why I feel totally out of touch with world events of the last few days.

I see Her Highness is still pushing this resolution about the genocide in Turkey 90 years ago.  I don’t get it.  Well, I do get it actually.  This is the only thing she thinks she can do to thwart the war effort and poke a stick in GWB’s eye.  I see it every day, but it still amazes me that they are willing to put party and personal politics above national security and national interests.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Top US Democrats Sunday brushed off Turkish fury and vowed to press ahead bill condemning the mass killing of Armenians decades ago as “genocide,” insisting that bloodshed today demanded a righting of past wrongs.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said possible reprisals affecting Turkey’s cooperation with the US military were “hypothetical” and would not derail the resolution.

Holding a vote on condemning the massacre, even many years after the fact, is “about who we are as a country,” Pelosi told ABC television.

Of course, that’s not how Turkey sees it.

Turkey has repeatedly said that if the Congress passes the Armenian resolution U.S.-Turkey relations would suffer. It is now understood that Turkey will tell the U.S. that it might cut or restrict the logistical support that Turkey provides the U.S. military in Iraq through Incirlik airbase – also affecting the future withdrawal of U.S. from Iraq, via Turkey.

The other dimension is Turkish military’s disappointment with the U.S for its inaction against the PKK and tolerating the terrorists based in northern Iraq that launch attacks inside Turkey - a long time ally of the U.S. and a partner in the war against terrorism

Another bumbling fool of a Donk that we’ll have to clean up after.

Convicted felon Clifford Harris, better known as the rapper T.I, was arrested for trying to get his bodyguards to buy him machine guns and silencers. A few hours later he won 2 BET hip-hop awards to go along with the 2 Grammy awards that he won last year.

The self-proclaimed King of the South, who was up for nine nominations, won two awards. But he couldn’t accept any trophies or make the planned performance after being arrested by federal authorities early Saturday.

T.I. was taken into custody in a shopping center parking lot where federal officials said he planned to pick up machine guns and silencers he had his bodyguard buy for him.

The arrest Saturday resulted from an investigation that began this month when a federal firearms licensee contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about a man inquiring about buying a machine gun without registering the weapon as required by law, according to a criminal complaint filed Saturday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

After trying to buy several machine guns from an undercover ATF agent, the unnamed person began cooperating with the government and said he was buying the machine guns and silencers for Clifford Harris, T.I.’s given name, the complaint said. According to the bodyguard, he had bought about nine firearms for T.I., and the rapper had given him cash to buy guns four different times, it said.

Harris brokered the deals through the bodyguard because he is a convicted felon, the complaint alleged. It is against federal law for a convicted felon to have another person get firearms on their behalf.

CNN says he was in possession of 3 machine guns and 2 silencers at the time of his arrest.

While some people might howl that this is a setup, I would note that each firearm or silencer he attempted to purchase counts as three felonies (at least) because of the strawman arrangement. Even with a minimal 2 years for each one, he’s looking at 30 years if convicted just for the stuff he was caught with at the last transaction. Game over gangsta, buh bye!

‘You Sneeze, You’re Dead Man’

Nathaniel Brooks stole a line from an old Western movie to capture a pair of burglars. A Fort Bend County homeowner fought back when he found burglars in his home.

“You know there’s something about when you hear a pump shotgun click,” said Nathaniel Brooks. “It makes everybody think twice.”

And the two burglars did think twice.

“You are trying to steal something out of my garage,” Brooks recalled telling the robbers. “You in my garage so you have no rights now. This is my house.”

He saw them through his back door rummaging through his garage.

“And I walked out of the house and I went around and confronted those guys on the side of the house,” he said. “So, I aimed at him and said, ‘You sneeze, you’re dead man.’ And I called the other guy out of the garage.

“I watch a lot of movies it sounded like a good thing to say. It got his attention.”

Brooks held them at attention until deputies got there two minutes later.

“I feel like I reacted like every homeowner should react,” said Brooks.

Greedy unions

Most BMEWS regulars know I’m a letter-carrier. I’ve been a member of the NALC for several years. My approach has been that I ‘hire’ the union to perform certain functions. If the union doesn’t perform, well.... I fire them.

Last night the local union voted to increased my union dues for stupid shit. The union hall roof is leaking. The union secretary needs a raise (mind you, she already earns more than the carriers she works for @$50,000.00/yr for a part-time position.) etc. Utility bills have increased. Duh! I’ve been dealing with all of that. The union got an increase at the same time I got an increase. Live within your means. But no, the unions are liberal with other peoples money…

Don’t know about you, but I’m on the board of a couple of private clubs; we have a building fund, and if the fund is short, we solicit donations for the building fund. What we don’t do is increase dues. A dues increase is permanent. Fixing the building isn’t.

The union passed the dues increase.

I vowed I’d leave it the dues increase passed. It did. And I’m gone.

Already finding obstacles to leaving the union. Need a form to stop union dues from being garnished from my paycheck. First problem is that I cannot personally contact USPS personnel office. When did that happen? It’s a good thing I started now, several months before I’m actually eligible to leave the union. It’ll take me, and my lawyer, several months to get the paperwork required.

Can’t wait for HillaryCare…

The Goreacle and the Prize

So I hear that AlGore won the Nobel Peace Prize.  I heard the story on NPR this morning and couldn’t decide if I wanted to laugh at how ridiculous the prize has become (Yasser Arafat, call your office) or throw up for the mis-information that was being spewed.

They said that the committee has “broadened” the definition of peace to embrace more activities.  In this year’s case, the idea is that when the planet gets so warm that life is unbearable, wars will break out.  Therefore, since AlGore is doing his damnedest to fight the warming onslaught of mankind, he is really promoting “Peace”.

Said the committee:

The struggle.  Its all about the struggle.

Never.  Nothing to see here. Move along now.

Fred’s Facts Check Out

I only watched a few minutes of the debate this week, but what I saw was rather imporessive.  I feared Fred would get into that slow drawl mode and lose everyone’s interest, but he didn’t seem to.  I think he bobs and turns his head too much, but I can take that if the content is right on.

FactCheck.org has the skinny on whether Fred made up stuff or not.

Thompson stuck to the facts in his rookie outing. A number of his statements attracted our interest, but they all checked out.

Corporate Taxes 2nd Highest in the World: Thompson was correct when he said of the U.S., “We have the second highest corporate tax penalty in the world.” According to a study produced by the global consulting firm KPMG, the U.S. top corporate tax rate of 40 percent is just slightly below Japan’s 40.6 percent. The United States is resisting a worldwide trend that has seen most nations reduce corporate taxes during the last decade. As of Jan. 1, 2007, the German rate was 38.36 percent; the Italian rate was 37.25 percent; and the Canadian rate was 36.1 percent. The average for the 30 major industrial democracies was 27.8 percent.

WMDs in Iraq: Thompson corrected moderator Chris Matthews, who wrongly implied that the former senator had said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction “right before” the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq:

Matthews: You made a statement a couple of days ago, I believe, that alluded to the fact you believed that there were such weapons [WMDs] in Iraq. Do you believe they were there right before we got in – they were moved out somewhere? ...
Thompson: No, I didn’t say that. I was just stating what was obvious and that is that Saddam had had them prior. They used them against his own people – against the Kurds.

Thompson was correct. Matthews referred to remarks the senator made to about 60 persons in Newton, Iowa, last week. Both MSNBC and the Des Moines Register quoted him as saying, “We can’t forget the fact that although at a particular point in time we never found any WMD down there, he clearly had had WMD. He clearly had had the beginnings of a nuclear program.” Thompson didn’t say in the speech when Saddam “had had WMD.” The Register updated its article with a follow-up interview in which he made clear he was referring to a period long before the war:

Thompson (Des Moines Register): He [Hussein] acknowledged, I think, in filings made by the United Nations that prior to the invasion – sometime prior to the invasion – that he had chemical and biological weapons. I mean he used chemical weapons on the Kurds.

We can see how Thompson might have given the crowd in Newton the impression that he thought Iraq possessed WMD immediately before the 2003 invasion. Unless he saw the Register’s update, Matthews could well have been left with that impression, too.

Economic Growth: Thompson erred – but on the safe side – when he said, “We’re enjoying 22 quarters of successive economic growth.” Actually, the U.S. economy has grown for 23 successive quarters, according to the most recent figures from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. And when preliminary figures on gross domestic product for July, August and September are released later this month, the official total is expected to reach 24.

Restraining Future Social Security Benefits: Thompson also was correct about the effect of restraining growth of Social Security benefits for future retirees:

Thompson: And then, lastly, one of the other things that could be done would be to index benefits to inflation. Index benefit to inflation for future retirees. It would not affect current or near retirement people. [It] would be indexed to inflation instead of wages, as it is today. And it would solve the problem for several years; it wouldn’t solve it indefinitely, but it would give us a window of opportunity to get our arms around the problem. It would be a major step in the right direction.

The Social Security actuaries calculate that it would require a tax increase of 1.95 percent of taxable payroll to pay benefits promised under current benefit formulas for the next 75 years. But most of that “actuarial imbalance” would disappear under various proposals to peg benefits of future retirees to inflation rather than to wage growth. One form of so-called “progressive” indexing would allow future retirement benefits for the lowest 40 percent of wage earners to keep growing under the current formula, which is pegged to wage growth, but slow down the growth of benefits for higher-income workers retiring after 2012 according to a sliding scale. Benefits for those at the very top would rise only enough to keep pace with inflation. Actuaries calculated that this would remove 1.21 percentage points from the 1.95 percent actuarial imbalance.

Opinions differ on whether any reduction in future benefit growth is a step “in the right direction,” and we take no position on that. Thompson was correct to say that proposals for inflation indexing would “solve the problem for years,” however.

Not a bad report card for his first time out.  How did the others fair?  Go and have a look.  There is a lot of detail, much of it aint pretty.

Give an Inch, and They Want a Mile

Halal food hard to swallow at UTSC

The Muslim Students Association at UTSC has ignited a fierce debate on the particulars of halal food on campus, refusing to support a long-awaited halal option at a Bluff’s, a UTSC campus restaurant.

The result of numerous faculty, staff and student requests, the new menu was introduced to the campus on May 29, making all chicken and beef options certified halal. Despite this, many MSA members say that any establishment that also serves alcohol and plays dance music is an unsuitable environment for their dietary needs.

This disagreement between the MSA and the university is not the first. Halal food has long been a hot topic at UTSC. With its large population of Muslim students and the politically active MSA counting hundreds of members, the issue of proper accommodations for halal food has repeatedly come up as a major point in student elections and public task forces.

Some students said the restaurant, in failing to accommodate those who prefer not to eat at an alcoholic establishment, made more of a negative gesture than a positive one with the menu option.

“This initiative was brought forth solely by Bluff’s without ever consulting the MSA or Muslim students. If this was a deliberate accommodation, it’s kind of offensive in giving us the food in a manner unsuitable to us,” said Ahmad Jaballah, a former MSA executive and current Scarborough Campus Students Union VP students and equity.

Jaballah also argued that patronizing such an establishment is wrong because Muslim students would provide revenue for Bluff’s to purchase alcohol—an action forbidden by hadith, a Prophetic saying.

They complain abut not having the right food, so the school adds that food to the menu.  Now, it is offensive, not because of the food, but because they would dare not change the atmosphere as well.  So now I’m betting they will change that, probably having “Halal Days” at this place.  Days where no alcohol or dancing will be allowed, but that will be “offensive” as well, because they will allow infidels into the place on those days.

An on, and on, and on, and on.......

Heading to Knoxville

My brother, who lives in Atlanta, and I are going to get together this weekend for along-overdue reunion.  Just the guys; wives and kids are not invited.  It’s a good time for us to catch up, do a little work on his website and generally cut loose for a couple of days.

We plan on hitting Coal Creek Armory to do some shooting (with requisit browsing and drooling on the merchandise).  I really want to shoot some new .45’s.

Any recommendations on a good place to get some grub while we’re in town?

What else should we not miss?

Ten Things You Ought To Know

There’s a lot of misinformation out there these days about people who have chosen to exercise their right to carry a concealed weapon according to the provisions made by state governments.

Here are a few things that CWP holders want people to know about them. Now of course there are exceptions to these general rules but I think you’ll find these things to be true about the vast majority of your legally carrying neighbors.

1. We don’t carry firearms so that we can ignore other basics of personal safety.
Every permit holder that I know realizes that almost all dangerous situations can be avoided by vigilance, alertness and by simply making wise choices about where one goes and what one does. We don’t walk down dark alleys. We lock our cars. We don’t get intoxicated in public or hang out around people who do. We park our cars in well lighted spots and don’t hang out in bad parts of town where we have no business. A gun is our last resort, not our first.

2. We don’t think we are cops, spies, or superheros.
We aren’t hoping that somebody tries to rob the convenience store while we are there so we can shoot a criminal. We don’t take it upon ourselves to get involved in situations that are better handled by a 911 call or by simply standing by and being a good witness. We don’t believe our guns give us any authority over our fellow citizens. We also aren’t here to be your unpaid volunteer bodyguard. We’ll be glad to tell you where we trained and point you to some good gun shops if you feel you want to take this kind of responsibility for your personal safety. Except for extrordinary circumstances your business is your business, don’t expect us to help you out of situations you could have avoided.

3. We are LESS likely, not more likely, to be involved in fights or “rage” incidents than the general public.
We recognize, better than many unarmed citizens, that we are responsible for our actions. We take the responsibility of carrying a firearm very seriously. We know that loss of temper, getting into fights or angrily confronting someone after a traffic incident could easily escalate into a dangerous situation. We are more likely to go out of our way to avoid these situations. We don’t pull our guns to settle arguments or to attempt to threaten people into doing what we want.

4. We are responsible gun owners.
We secure our firearms so that children and other unauthorized people cannot access them. Most of us have invested in safes, cases and lock boxes as well as other secuity measures to keep our firearms secure. Many of us belong to various organizations that promote firearms safety and ownership.

5. Guns are not unsafe or unpredictable.
Modern firearms are well made precision instruments. Pieces do not simply break off causing them to fire. A hot day will not set them off. Most modern firearms will not discharge even if dropped. There is no reason to be afraid of a gun simply laying on a table or in a holster. It is not going to discharge on its own.

6. We do not believe in the concept of “accidental discharges”.
There are no accidental discharges only negligent discharges or intentional discharges. We take responsibility for our actions and have learned how to safely handle firearms. Any case you have ever heard of about a gun “going off” was the result of negligence on somebody’s part. Our recognition of our responsibility and familiarity with firearms makes us among the safest firearms owners in America.

7. Permit holders do their best to keep our concealed weapons exactly that: concealed.
However, there are times with an observant fellow citizen may spot our firearm or the print of our firearm under our clothes. We are very cognizant that concerns about terrorism and crime are in the forefront of the minds of most citizens. We also realize that our society does much to condition our fellow citizens to have sometimes irrational fears about firearms. We would encourage citizens who do happen to spot someone carrying a firearm to use good judgment and clear thinking if they feel to need to take action. Please recognize that it’s very uncommon for a criminal to use a holster. However, if you feel the need to report having spotted a firearm we would ask that you please be specific and detailed in your call to the police or in your report to a store manager or private security. Please don’t generalize or sensationalize what you observed. Comments like “there’s a guy running around in the store with a gun” or even simply “I saw a man with a gun in the store” could possibly cause a misunderstanding as to the true nature of the incident.

8. The fact that we carry a firearm to any given place does not mean that we believe that place to be inherently unsafe.
If we believe a place to be unsafe, most of us would avoid that place all together if possible. However, we recognize that trouble could occur at any place and at any time. Criminals do not observe “gun free zones”. If trouble does come, we do not want the only armed persons to be perpetrators. Therefore, we don’t usually make a determination about whether or not to carry at any given time based on “how safe” we think a location is.

9. Concealed weapon permit holders are an asset to the public in times of trouble.
The fact that most permit holders have the good judgment to stay out of situations better handled by a 911 call or by simply being a careful and vigilant witness does not mean that we would fail to act in situations where the use of deadly force is appropriate to save lives. Review of high profile public shooting incidents shows that when killers are confronted by armed resistance they tend to either break off the attack and flee or choose to end their own life. Lives are saved when resistance engages a violent criminal. Lives are lost when the criminal can do as he pleases.

10. The fact that criminals know that some of the population may be armed at any given time helps to deter violence against all citizens.
Permit holders don’t believe that every person should necessarily be armed. We recognize that some people may not be temperamentally suited to carry a firearm or simply may wish not to for personal reasons. However we do encourage you to respect our right to arm ourselves. Even if you choose not to carry a firearm yourself please oppose measures to limit the ability of law abiding citizens to be armed. As mentioned before: criminals do not observe “gun free zones”. Help by not supporting laws that require citizens to be unarmed victims.

Finally, we have proof of what we have feared all along: Hillary is actually a witch! If you think about it, it really, really makes sense. After all, it explains why she displays a rigor mortis-like joker grin and the dry cackle that so cruelly imitates human laughter.

This can only mean one thing: she weighs as much as a duck, ergo, she is made of wood. And what do you do with wood?

Careful, she may turn you into a newt.

Only Cops And Soldiers Should Have Guns

Guy Loves Girl.

Guy is a cop.
Victims are from 14-20 years old, including ex-girlfriend

Remember kids, only cops and soldiers should be allowed to have guns.  It’s for your protection after all.

Wisconsin town in shock after off-duty deputy kills 6

CRANDON, Wisconsin (CNN)—A small town in northern Wisconsin awoke to grief and questions Monday, a day after an off-duty sheriff’s deputy shot and killed six people at an early-morning party. A seventh person at the party was critically injured in the shooting

The shooter, 20, was killed by a police SWAT team Sunday afternoon, according to the town’s mayor.

The dead and wounded were all students or graduates of Crandon High School. The gunman, Forest County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Peterson, was a graduate of the school, which has a little more than 300 students.

Police have not confirmed the identities of the victims, but witnesses said they range in age from 14 to 20, and one of the victims is apparently Peterson’s former girlfriend.

Before anyone goes bat-crazy, I’m not advocating that 14 year-old kids should have been armed at the party.  My sarcasm above is due to the consistant meme of the left that we, the unwashed masses, should not be allowed to have guns.  That cops will protect us after all.

The Demon

Thursday morning at 3:30AM, I woke up with a searing pain in my ankle.  I tried to get back to sleep, but it was no use.  It actually felt like I had broken it.  After searching for evidence of a spider bite or something else, but finding nothing, I realized it was that demon Gout re-visiting.  I’ve had it a couple of times in the past, but always in my big toe (which is not pleasent either).

There are, apparently, three things that are major controbuters to this damnable disease:
1. Being Overweight
2. Alcohol Use
3. “Rich” Foods

I enjoy an adult beverage now and then but don’t drink regularly, but I do have some extra poundage and do love sausage biscuits.

So I spent most of Thursday and Friday with my leg propped up, drinking gallons of water and cherry juice (which is supposed to help dissolve the purin crystals that cause the pain).  Worked pretty well and I was back to almost normal by Saturday.

Now I have to really watch what I eat.  no more Sausage Egg Muffins at Mickey-D’s.  Passed on the ice cream last night.  I belong to a local gym, so will be doing my best ot get over there two to three times a week and get this excess weight off.

Damn, I hate getting old.

Time To Take Down the Birdfeeder

Great analogy over at Say Anything.

I bought a bird feeder.  I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed.  What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. 

But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. 

Then came the poop.  It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table ... everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean.  They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud.  They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. 

After a while, I couldn’t even sit on my own back porch anymore.  So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. 

Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now let’s see .... 

Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing,
free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. 

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands.  Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child’s 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn’t speak English. 

Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to “press one” to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than “Old Glory” are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. 

Just my opinion, but maybe it’s time for the government to take down the bird feeder.

Besides that, in our area at least, bird feeders sometimes attract more than birds.  Sometimes its just a pesky squirrel, but sometimes its a bear.  Having a bear roam around your yard looking for food is not a pleasent experience.
