Insensitive, but…

Quoting Tam, quoting herself.

It makes one look like a savage to say so, but if your house burns down, blows over, or floats away, it’s not the job of the federal government to fix it for you. Charity is one thing, but federal tax dollars coerced at 1040-point from a single working mother of two in Dubuque (and then filtered through a morbidly obese federal agency) to rebuild your bungalow in Destin Orange County is not charity, okay? It’s extortion.

I’ve argued this over and over.  The Federal Government has specific, enumerated functions.  Bailing everyone out of every bad situation they find themselves in is not one of them.  Yes, I greive and mourn for those affected by disaster.  In fact, I’ve been down to Mississippi twice already helping in the cleanup effort, spending my vacation time and money to do it.  I spent a week in the back hills of Kentucky this spring helping rebuild a ministry that helps those who are down and out.

I’m sorry, but making things all better for people after they loose possessions is not the job of .gov.

Immigration Plan Released

A little late reporting this, but still looks better than anything else I’ve seen.

Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Plan Released

In previous commentaries Fred has mentioned the need to secure our borders and uphold the rule of law. In “The Importance of Border Security” he wrote,

You can’t have national security without border security. It’s not only necessary for any meaningful immigration reform; border security plays a key role in both the interdiction of illegal drugs and in defending America against terrorist threats. Weak borders allow terrorists and smugglers, as well as millions of illegal aliens, easy entrance to the United States. Unfortunately, it’s not at all clear our government is committed to its first responsibility: the protection of our borders.

Today, Fred has released his Border Security and Immigration Reform Plan.

These are the highlights:

No Amnesty. Amnesty undermines U.S. law and policy, rewards bad behavior, and is unfair to the millions of immigrants who follow the law and are awaiting legal entry into the United States.
Attrition through Enforcement. Adding “at least 25,000 agents” to the Border Patrol and doubling the number of ICE agents.
Enforce Existing Federal Laws. Rejecting sanctuary cities by cutting federal discretionary funds to states and local governments that ignore existing immigration laws.
Reduce the Jobs Incentive. Require U.S. employers to use the E-Verify system to determine if a person can legally work here.
Bolster Border Security. Finish building the wall along our border.
Increased Prosecution. Go after coyotes, alien gang members, and criminals.
Rigorous Entry/Exit Tracking.

The plan also includes improving our immigration process; rewarding those who play by the rules and add to our country:

Maximize Program Efficiency. Make it faster and easier for employers and immigrants to obey the law.
Enhanced Reporting.
Modernize Immigration Law/Policy. Reduce chain migration to spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens.
English As Official Language. The plan would promote assimilation and legal immigrants’ success, and require English proficiency in order for any foreign person to be granted lawful permanent resident status.
Freedom from Political Oppression. The U.S. would continue to welcome victims of ruthless regimes.
Service to Country. Those lawfully serving in our armed forces would have an easier time becoming U.S. citizens.

Shock Troops Finally Sinks

We knew it was coming.  Hot Air, along with many others, has been following this story since the beginning.  Now Drudge has the scoop.

SHOCK DOCS: THE NEW REPUBLIC ‘SHOCK TROOPS’ STORY COLLAPSES
WED Oct 24 2007 12:29:44 ET

The DRUDGE REPORT has optained internal documents from the investigation of THE NEW REPUBLIC’S “Baghdad Diarist”, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, an Army private turned war correspondent who reported tales of military malfeasance from the Iraq War front.

The documents appear to expose that once the veracity of Beauchamp’s diaries were called into question, and an Army investigation ensued, THE NEW REPUBLIC has failed to publicly account for publishing slanderous falsehoods about the U.S. military in a time of war.

Document 1: Beauchamp Refuses to Stand by Story (Beauchamp Transcript Part 1)

THE NEW REPUBLIC has been standing behind the stories from their Baghdad Diarist, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, since questions were first raised about their accuracy over the summer. On August 10, the editors at TNR accused the Army of “stonewalling” their investigation into the stories by preventing them from speaking with Beauchamp. The DRUDGE REPORT has since obtained the transcript of a September 7 call between TNR editor Frank Foer, TNR executive editor Peter Scoblic, and Private Beauchamp. During the call, Beauchamp declines to stand by his stories, telling his editors that “I just want it to end. I’m not going to talk to anyone about anything really.” The editors respond that “we just can’t, in good conscience, continue to defend the piece” without an explanation, but Beauchamp responds only that he “doesn’t care what the public thinks.” The editors then ask Beauchamp to cancel scheduled interviews with the WASHINGTON POST and NEWSWEEK.

Document 2: Beauchamp Admits to “Gross Exaggerations and Inaccurate Allegations” (Beauchamp Transcript Part 2)

The DRUDGE REPORT has also obtained a signed “Memorandum for Record” in which Beauchamp recants his stories and concedes the facts of the Army’s investigation—that his stories contained “gross exaggerations and inaccurate allegations of misconduct” by his fellow soldiers.

Document 3: Army Investigation: Tales “Completely Fabricated,” Beauchamp Wanted to be Hemingway

The third document obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT is the Army’s official report on the investigation into the allegations made by Private Beauchamp. The Army concluded that Beauchamp had “completely fabricated” the story of mocking a disfigured woman, that his description of a “Saddam-era dumping ground” was false, and that claims that he and his men had deliberately targeted dogs with their armored vehicles was “completely unfounded.” Further the report stated “that Private Beauchamp desired to use his experiences to enhance his writing and provide legitimacy to his work possibly becoming the next Hemingway.”

The report concludes that “Private Beauchamp takes small bits of truth and twists and exaggerates them into fictional accounts that he puts forth as the whole truth for public consumption.”

Developing…

Hemmingway indeed.  Sheesh.

UPDATE:  As memoryleak mentions in the comments, the Drudge links have gone AWOL.  WizBang has a good writeup of the story as well as copies of the documents.

how to create a news story

I’ve got to wonder why this is showing up as news today.
Perhaps it’s a Me Too, Me Too!!tm story so that not all the glory goes to another state?

Federal authorities have been tracing guns seized from gangs in New Jersey, helping prosecutors bring broader cases of more significant impact, U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said Tuesday.

In one case, investigators tracked guns and ammo to an Ohio gun shop, where gang members collected scores of firearms, taking advantage of lax gun laws to recruit college students as straw buyers.”

“They were trafficking those guns back to New Jersey and killing our children on the streets of East Orange

Wow, this sounds like big news! Well, it is. Or maybe was. What Christie is referring to is a gun running bust that happened almost 4 years ago. The gun shop owner has passed on, the thugs with the guns are all in jail for a long time (25-30 years). The quotes above appear to be bold statements that Good Things Are Happening Now, but what Christie actually did today was give a rah-rah talk at a local business school. Well, as we say in real business, “What have you done for me lately?”

The “lax gun laws” reference means that Ohio does not have a One A Day/Week/Month/Year/Lifetime gun purchase law, and that the gun dealer is somehow allowed to accept the word of the buyer that he isn’t making a straw purchase. Straw purchases are against the law in Ohio. Only 3 states in the US have the monthly purchase law, so I guess we’re all “lax”. Don’t forget that if you buy several pistols from a dealer within a 5 day period your name already gets reported to BATFE

Or maybe this story is acting as a push to get NJ’s One a Month bill (bill A3511/S2341) signed into law? I know the Assembly passed it this summer but I don’t know if it has been signed by governor Corzine yet. Do unsigned bills in NJ die in committe at the end of the year?

One thing I did notice while looking things up for this post is that the people who were the actual strawmen were not prosecuted:

Straw buyers are recruited in states like Ohio that do not have limitations on the number of guns that can be bought per day. Ordinarily, buyers are people who are short of cash, Mr. Christie said. They usually have no criminal records, and gang members from states with strict gun laws like New Jersey offer them extra cash for buying several guns, he said.

The straw buyers in this case were not indicted and were identified in court papers only by their initials. They were students at Wilberforce University in southwestern Ohio.

Why not? Wouldn’t going after the “strawbies” cleave this deadly pipeline to gangland? That seems to make sense to me. Maybe making straw purchases a major felony with long prison sentances would work better than laws that limit purchases?

Typical

In typical Democrat fashion, Hillary Clinton has decided that she would be able to give something away that isn’t hers to begin with.

Clinton will consider giving up some powers

WASHINGTON - Senator Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that the Bush-Cheney administration had engaged in a “power grab” and that she would consider relinquishing some of that executive power if she followed it into the White House.

“There were a lot of actions which they took that were clearly beyond any power the Congress would have granted, or that in my view that was inherent in the Constitution,” Mrs. Clinton said, in an interview posted on the Web site of The Guardian newspaper of Britain.

So, which powers have the current administration “grabbed” from under the watchful eye of Congress?

She did not provide specifics about which claims to power she would relinquish, adding, “That has to be part of the review that I undertake when I get to the White House.”

Like I said: Typical.

News Bits

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, just up to my eyes in work and can’t get a few minutes to put anything up.

Here are a couple of things I noticed this morning:

California Fires“And Still I Persist” has been added to my daily reads list.  This guy is right in the middle of it and posting good graphical displays of what’s going on.

Global Warming. (I thought the debate was over?) Two items:  First off, Harry Dingleberry thinks that the fires are the result of global warming.  The fact that southern California has a history of fires this time of year notwithstanding.

Senator Inhofe is warning of the cost of half-baked legislation to deal with the issue (ya think?).

Tim Robbins doesn’t like noise.

Finally, Dennis Kucinich saw a UFO, says a new book.

The Lightning

Great essay by the Geek this morning.  Go give it a read and let me know what you think.

Here’s an excerpt to whet your whistle:

Whether America remains free and prosperous will be determined by whoever controls The Lightning; which is some critical portion of war suitable energy resources.

And it damned well better be us.

Let’s talk a little while about The Lighting, so that we understand what it really is. There are a lot of high yield energy resources on the planet; nuclear, coal, gas, oil and oil distillates, hydraulics, and a pile of what are currently low yield types, such as wind, geothermal, solar, and the like.

All war is logistics, and all logistics is resource allocation and delivery, and it all takes energy.

In order to prevail, the warfighters, their support supplies, their weapon systems and their munitions must be delivered to the theatre and positioned such that they can effectively used to defend or take and hold their objectives.

Of these energy types, most are simply not suitable for war. They may be useful for economic and private consumption, perhaps, but not useful for war.

Empty Holster Week

Courtesy of The Shooting Wire

Empty Holster

Across college campuses this week, a protest against those “gun free zones” many, including me, believe contribute to the horrid costs in human lives that are extracted when crazies suddenly start attacking their fellow students.

The protests are organized as “Students for Concealed Carry on Campus” and will be called “the empty holster” protest. As the name implies, the students will attend classes wearing empty holsters.

The organizers say it’s in protest of the state laws and campus policies that they feel give armed killers an unfair advantage over law-abiding citizens licensed to carry concealed handguns virtually anywhere else.

In thirty-nine states, individuals are licensed to carry concealed handguns in their day-to-day lives. That means offices, malls, movies, restaurants and virtually anywhere else, armed citizens regularly conduct their normal business without incident.

College campuses, however, seem to be the one place where law has little bearing on policy. Firearms - at least in the hands of law-abiding students and faculty- are flatly forbidden. Virginia Tech is one of those “gun free” campuses. Student protesters say that’s why, on April 16 of this year, twenty-seven students and five faculty members died when a mentally-disturbed student carried a pair of handguns and a backpack of ammo onto the campus and opened fire.

It would seem that after two decades of shooting rampages, from employees “going postal” to Columbine High School and Virginia Tech, it would be apparent that “gun free zones” are also “target rich zones” for anyone looking to slaughter defenseless people.

In short, Empty Holster protesters want administrators to realize that “feeling safe” and “being safe” are not the same thing.

But that’s not likely to sway college administrators. Able to pretty much operate as they choose, they’ve chosen to ignore independent research and state law enforcement studies showing that license holders are five times less likely to be arrested for violent crimes.

Not all schools, however, feel that an unarmed student population is a safe population. For the past year, Utah has allowed concealed carry license holders to carry their firearms on campus. There hasn’t been a single act of violence.

The SCCC is slowly beginning to get noticed in the gun world - and has already built a considerably media presence. At the recent Gun Rights Policy Conference, Michael Flitcraft, SCCC chapter president at the University of Cincinnati met with industry leaders and explained the purpose of the non-partisan group. It’s really simple - provide another layer of defense against the rare, but deadly occurrence of campus shootings.

The organization continues to fight a few misconceptions. First, they are not advocating firearms for all students. The SCCC has said - in all instances - they are talking about adults, not children, ages 21 or older who have already passed the background checks and training necessary to have a concealed carry permit. As they have pointed out, there are many students on college campuses who have backgrounds - from law enforcement to military service - that makes them qualified, emotionally and operationally to carry a firearm.

In a recent CSPAN debate between George Mason University SCCC member Andrew Dysart and Paul Helmke of the Brady Center, it was obvious that opponents pound a very familiar drumbeat: students are inclined to be too immature to be trusted to protect themselves. After all, Helmke says, college campuses are tense enough without adding firearms to the mixes.

In contrast, SCCC’s Dysart stayed away from emotion, citing facts and statistics that show, in fact, that in most situations, young adults who happen to be qualified to carry a firearm in other situations are no less qualified on a college campus.

As the Empty Holster Protest continues this week, it seems a good time for all of us to remember that we cannot remain silent on matters that influence all our individual freedoms, and safety.

And The Winner Is…..

Betty B. Casey

Betty Casey Wins Limbaugh Smear Letter Auction

Betty B. Casey is the winner of the Limbaugh Smear Letter auction on eBay, which ended with a $2.1 million winning bid.

Betty B. Casey is a noted philanthropist and supporter of the arts, particularly the Washington Opera, and donated prime real estate to the Salvation Army when objections to a planned mayoral mansion for D.C. killed the plan. She has also donated $6,900 to Barack Obama’s campaign, as well as to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Thank you Betty for donating to this worthy cause, and poking these silly politicians in the eye.

Of course, now Harry Dingelberry Reid is taking the credit:

Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they’re auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause. I don’t know what we could do more important than helping to ensure that children of our fallen soldiers and police officers who have fallen in the line of duty have the opportunity for their children to have a good education. Think of this, more than $2 million — that will really help. that’s, again, an understatement. There’s only a little bit of time left so i would ask those that are wanting to do more, that they can go to Harry Reid letter and it will come up on e-bay. I encourage anyone interested with the means to consider contributing to this worthwhile cause. I strongly believe when we can put our differences aside, even Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh, we should do that and try to accomplish good things for the American people. This does that, madam president. More than $2 million for a letter signed by this senator and my friends.

Mark Hemmingway over at National Review covers Rush’s challenge to the congresscritters:

As of Friday morning, the Limbaugh letter is going for over $2 million. The auction ends today at 1 P.M., during Rush’s show. Previously, Limbaugh issued a public challenge to all of the senators involved to join him in matching the winning bid. “I would like to issue this challenge to Senator Reid and the 41 senators who signed his letter. You say you support the military. You say you’re big, and you think it’s patriotic, and that I was unpatriotic. Well, I would like for each of you, Senator Reid, and the 40 senators who signed, to match whatever the winning bid is. Show us your support for the U.S. military by all 41 of you pro-military people, Democrats in the Senate, match whatever the winning bid is and send that amount to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation,” he said.

Given the huge bids on the eBay sale, I didn’t suspect that too many of the 41 senators’ offices would have that much cash lying around. But I called all of them to ask anyway. As long as the mood in Washington is a spitting contest over who’s more patriotic, maybe I could get some agreement over Limbaugh’s publicity stunt. Or, failing that, maybe a divisive partisan comment might drive the story back on to the front page, with the goal of further publicizing the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation.

No such luck. I called all 41 senators involved, and I spoke to press secretaries or left messages with 33 Senate offices (I tried repeatedly, and you’d be surprised at how many busy signals you get trying to get ahold of senators.) I told dozens of press secretaries all about the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation and Rush’s challenge. I got only two responses, and of those, only Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado proved himself above the recent pettiness. He issued a terse statement: “The Senator supports their [the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation] work and is pleased to hear that Rush does as well.”

I am nearly speechless!

But luckily, my fingers are unaffected.  Thank goodness for blogs.  I request you watch the linked video.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he just say, “Where are you going to get that money? Are you going to tell us lies like you’re telling us today? Is that how you’re going to fund the war? You don’t have money to fund the war or children. But you’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.”?

This will be amongst the first blogs leaping to protect Free Speech, as guaranteed by our Constitution, but can you believe this?  Granted, this idiot is from California, but can you believe what he just said?  Aside from calling the occupation of Iraq illegal (I will not call it a war.  That part is over.  This is the occupation.  Not sure how?  Ask me and it’ll be the next post) despite the fact that Congress approved military action against Iraq, he is accusing the President of the United States of intentionally killing innocents, which I believe is still called murder, and laughing at the deaths of our men and women in uniform.

While not a Hemingway or Frost, I am fairly capable of expressing myself in writing, no thanks to any public education I received, but I am unable to convey with enough weight how mad this makes me.  Livid.  Irate.  I’m fuming.

I am hardly a fan-boy of President Bush, as I think his administration, for its strengths, has done a great deal to limit our Constitutional Freedoms in the name of “security”, but this is just too much.  I am writing the following letter to my Congressman, Rep. Jason Altmire:

Dear Congressman Altmire,

I was angered and shocked when I heard the statements made by your peer, Representative Stark, of California, during the discussion on whether or not to override President Bush’s veto of the the SCHIP expansion.

I saw from the Congressional Record that you spoke in favor of SCHIP, and like Mr. Stark, must also be disappointed with the President’s decision to veto.

That being said, Mr. Altmire, we all have disappointments at work.  The way that Mr. Stark chose to express his disappointment in the President’s actions is not, in my opinion, how I would like an elected Representative in the United States Congress to conduct him or herself.  He actually implied that the President of the United States laughed at soldiers getting killed while serving their country!

I understand that Congressman Stark was using his First Amendment Freedoms of protected political speech, and as a veteran, I have fought for those rights for others.  As such, I will not ask for something like a public censure or resolution condemning Mr. Stark.  I, personally, believe that Congress has better things to be doing than inhibiting the speech of others.

I would ask, however, that when you next meet Mr. Stark you let him know that at least some of your constituents still find accusing the President of the United States of such outrages is inappropriate in the extreme and behavior not befitting a Congressman of the United States House of Representatives--he is an embarrassment to your party.

I cannot emphasize sufficiently how upset his comments have made me.  I am glad that you are representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania better than Mr. Stark is representing California.  Thank you, sir, for your time and consideration in this matter.

I urge you to talk to your Congressmen too!

Isn’t this price gouging??

Hey shooters, think ammo prices have gone up too much here in the last year? Think prices for new and used guns are through the roof? Friends, I’m here to tell you we’ve got it easy. It’s worse in other places, even other places that have no gun laws AT ALL:

(story from Al-Reuters via H/T from LGF)

HEBRON, West Bank (Reuters) - Two years ago, an M16 automatic rifle could fetch $5,400 or more in the Palestinian West Bank. Now buyers at Hebron’s clandestine gun market are asked to pay more than double.

In the northern West Bank city of Jenin, every bullet for an AK-47 rifle costs 35 Israeli shekels, or more than $8. In Hamas-controlled Gaza, an AK-47 bullet goes for 4-6 Israeli shekels, $1-1.50.

“I don’t feel safe anymore,” said 28-year-old Abo Abdo, who sold his car this month to buy a rifle to protect his wife and two children. “Everyone is buying guns.”

Since the Gaza takeover, Western powers have started pumping cash into the West Bank in an attempt to bolster Abbas and further isolate Hamas in Gaza, and are training police and security forces loyal to the Fatah-backed administration.

“We are facing a very grave situation,” a Palestinian security source said. “People distrust the Palestinian police. They are buying guns to defend themselves.”

So we have a population of terrorists - people who overwhelmingly voted for a terrorist government - arming themselves against the [sarcasm]legitimate security forces [/sarcasm] of the new terrorist government that accidently (ahem) took over a few months back. Gosh, you’d think the regular terrorist citizens feel afraid because the terrorists who are in charge could be plotting to send terrorists after them!

Funny thing though ... nobody in Paleswine has a job. Where’s the money coming from? Furthermore, where are the extra guns coming from? And dammit, why didn’t anybody tell me? If I could get a few hundred cases of 7.62x39 over there I could make millions!!!
