Out of Touch
I hate being away from the blog on a big-news weekend. It’s so hard to come and comment on a story, even a big one, when everyone and their Aunt has already said all that can be said.
I had a great weekend though. My daughter is a volunteer at the Frontier Culture Museum. She interprets at the German farm, so gets to learn about history and interact with people all day. This weekend, her and about 15 other yutes put on a version of Aesop’s Fables for the visitors to the museum.
My brother-in-law and his wife came down from Maryland for the show. They are moderate, left-leaning folk from the big city, so coming down here is always a treat. We broke out the weaponry and began a shoot-fest that went on for a couple of hours (when we ran out of light). Mrs. Christian as well as our sister-in-law were having a great time shooting cans of SAM’s Cola and clay pigeons.
After church on Sunday, we went down to the local park and played tennis. I don’t play tennis (more of a racquetball person), but it was fun smacking it back and forth with the kids.
Monday’s are always busy, so I rarely get a chance to blog until sometime in the evening...which didn’t happen last night because I was finishing up a web project for a client.
So, now that you’re caught up with the life of Fletcher Christian, here’s a couple of things that I’ve caught from the hundreds of news items I’ve browsed through:
- Alajihaddinnerjacket spoke at Columbia U, telling us that Israel must go and the Holocaust never happened. Yawn. Were you expecting something new?
- President Bush spoke at the UN today and Cuba walked out. Heh.
- You can test your knowledge of civics here. I only scored 45/60 (75%)
- GM workers are on strike.
- Finally, OSU coach Mike Gundy lays it on deep and thick toward newspaper writer Jenni Carlson. Yikes.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
- Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
- Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
- Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Use Excel?
Excel is almost Ubiquitous. Almost everyone who needs to calculate a budget or manage the finances of a company uses Excel.
How about this? Do you have the latest version (Excel 2007)? Open it up and put in this formula:
=850*77.1
The answer, if you use a calculator, is 65,535. What does Excel tell you it is?
That’s right: 100,000
A minor bug?
Try these:
=5.1*12850
=10.2*6425
=20.4*3212.5
=40.8*1606.25
=77.1*850
=154.2*425
=212.5*308.4
=308.4*212.5
=425*154.2
Convinced we have a problem yet?
Here’s the thread on the Microsoft board.
How long do you think it will be until it is fixed?

Dads walking daughters down the aisle, a no-no in Stockholm
STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Brides in Stockholm who want their fathers to walk them down the aisle are likely to be told it can’t be done, as some pastors are refusing to allow the practice they say is sexist, a pastor said on Friday.

I’m Not Quite Dead yet..
This Article wouldn’t be complete without the clip from Monty Python and the holy grail
SourceCARACAS (Reuters) - A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.
ADVERTISEMENTCarlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.
“I woke up because the pain was unbearable,” Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.
His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband’s body only to find him moved into a corridor—and alive.
Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.
with it happening in Venezuela, can’t help but wonder if he didn’t do something to make Hugo Wish him dead…

rumors and conspiracy theories … are they funny when they don’t come true?
So I’m working at my PC, trying to figure out how fast a 45 caliber lead bullet with an .035” thick annealed pure copper jacket can spin before it self-destructs - you know, doing important stuff , and my brother sends me a link:
Hmmm ... seems somebody with an awful lot of money has put some markers into play in the stock market, betting on an enormous drop in share prices with 4 weeks of 9/4. We’re talking 50% or more, or that somebody is going to be out a whole huge lotta money - about 700 MILLION DOLLARS (damn, we need a Dr. Evil emoticon for moments like this!)
Now, this has happened before. Once. Just before 9/11. Yep, the terrorists went short, and made a fortune when the market tumbled.
The two sales are being referred to by market traders as “bin Laden trades” because only an event on the scale of 9-11 could make these short-sell options valuable.
There are 65,000 contracts @ $750.00 for the SPX 700 calls for open interest. That controls 6.5 million shares at $750 = $4.5 Billion. Not a single trade. But quite a bit of $$ on a contract that is 700 points away from current value. No one would buy that deep “in the money” calls. No reason to. So if they were sold looks like someone betting on massive dislocation. Lots of very strange option activity that I haven’t seen before.
The entity or individual offering these sales can only make money if the market drops 30%-50% within the next four weeks. If the market does not drop, the entity or individual involved stands to lose over $1 billion just for engaging in these contracts! Clearly, someone knows something big is going to happen BEFORE the options expire on Sept. 21.
THEORIES:
The following theories are being discussed widely within the stock and options markets today regarding the enormous and very unusual activity reported above and two stories below. Those theories are:1) A massive terrorist attack is going to take place before Sept. 21 to tank the markets, OR;
2) China, reeling over losing $10 Billion in bad loans to the sub-prime mortgage collapse presently taking place, is going to dump US currency and tank all of Capitalism with a Communist financial revolution. Either scenario is bad and the clock is ticking. The drop-dead date of these contracts is September 21. Whatever is going to happen MUST take place between now and then or the folks involved in these contracts will lose over $1 billion for having engaged in this activity.
Well, September 21 has come and gone, and the market seems to be doing just fine. Guess somebody lost a fortune. Sure would be nice to know who made these massive Puts. Hmm, what date was that IAF airstrike again? That was September 6th, right? Cuz it would take a calamity the size of popping a nuke on Tel Aviv to trash the market bad enough for this gamble to pay off. And now, that ain’t gonna happen.
So, should we open a yummy tub of Schadenfreude and enjoy this “misfortune”? Cuz it’s pretty much a no-brainer figuring out where the money came from.

2006 Barbara K. Olson Memorial Lecture
I’ve been listening to Federalist Society podcasts while working. (iPods are great!) Today I heard the 2006 Barbara Olson Memorial Lecture from last November. This was the sixth annual lecture. The first was given by her husband Ted Olson. This time the speaker was Vice-President Dick Cheney. After opening remarks about the Society and Mrs. Olson, he gets on with the topic–the war on terror. (I still hate that name for it.) He gives one of the best descriptions of the enemy I’ve heard.
When you’re dealing with hidden adversaries, you have to spend a lot of time speculating on what their next movements or their targets might be. But when it comes to their beliefs and to their long-term objectives, we have no need to speculate. They have laid it out in detail for the entire world to see.
The terrorists have adopted the pretense of an aggrieved party, claiming to represent the powerless against modern imperialists. The fact is they’re at war with every development of classical liberalism in the past twelve centuries. They serve an ideology that rejects tolerance and denies freedom of conscience. They would condemn women to servitude, gays to death, minority religions to persecution. An ideology so backward, so violent, so hateful, can take hold only by force or intimidation, and so those who refuse to bow to the tyrants face brutalization or murder—and no group or person is exempt.
And it is they, the terrorists, who have ambitions of empire. Their goal in the broader Middle East is to seize control of a country, so they have a base from which to launch attacks against governments that refuse to meet their demands. Their ultimate aim—again, one that they boldly proclaim—is to establish a caliphate covering a region from Spain, across North Africa, through the Middle East and South Asia, all the way around to Indonesia. They have proclaimed, as well, the goal of arming themselves with chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons, to destroy Israel, to intimidate all Western countries, and to cause mass death in the United States. One of the terrorists believed to have planned the 9/11 attacks said he hoped the event would signal the beginning of the end of America. They hate us, they hate our country, they hate the liberties for which we stand. And they hit us first. And we will not sit back and wait to be hit again.
Later we find out why the Left hates the NSA ‘domestic surveillance program’…
The activities conducted under this authorization have, without any doubt, helped to detect and prevent terrorist attacks against America and saved American lives ... Yet none of these considerations was persuasive to a federal district court in the state of Michigan, which ruled three months ago that the NSA program violated the Constitution and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The court found, among other factors, that warrantless surveillance of terrorist-related communications would cause irreparable injury to the American Civil Liberties Union…
Having seen the latest bin Laden tape, I can understand that.
Well worth a read or a listen.

Rather Psychotic
From LGF
It’s absolutely amazing, but Dan Rather and his lawyers are actually planning to argue in their lawsuit against CBS that the phony memos are genuine.
CBS aired the story on Sept. 8, 2004, at the height of the presidential campaign, hours after White House official Dan Bartlett did not challenge the authenticity of the memos when asked about them by CBS. Bartlett said later that he had no way of knowing on such short notice whether the memos were real.
Gold, Rather’s lawyer, maintained that “nobody’s proved the documents were forgeries. The way we look at it, it’s more than likely the documents are authentic.”
I’m going to say this again just to go on the record: the CBS “Killian” memos are frauds. It has been proven beyond all doubt. It is simply impossible that these documents were created on any machine available in the 1970s.
And for Dan Rather to continue insisting they are genuine shows either: 1) a disconnection from reality that borders on the psychotic, or 2) a blatant liar willing to go down in flames rather than admit the truth.
I’ll take door number 1 Alex.
If you recall, this was the animation Charles did back then, showing the reported document from the 1970’s against a document created in Microsoft Word.

Shamnesty Rears Its Ugly Head Again
Michelle, of course, is on top of it.
Here’s the latest. Numbers USA says the Senate “will resume consideration of H.R. 1585, the Defense Department authorization bill for fiscal year 2008, at 10:30 a.m” today…
The floor vote on the amendment containing the DREAM Act amnesty — new number: SA 2919 — may occur tomorrow. It will take 41 NO votes to kill this amnesty. Currently, only 20 Senators are telling their constituents that they will vote NO on the amnesty.
The Senate switchboard number again is 202-224-3121.
Grassfire.org reports a tsunami of faxes flooding the Capitol in opposition to the DREAM Act.
John Hawkins gathers intel from a Hill source.
Call and write. Let’s stop this thing......again.

The Democrat Party
I’ve often wondered why the news media continues to refer to the Democrat party as the Democratic party. Now, from Neal’s Nuze, we have the answer:
WHY DEMOCRATS JUST ABSOLUTELY HATE BEING CALLED .....
I’ve always being one who likes to get under the skin of the collective left, and glorioski, have I found a way to rattle Democrats. You just refer to their wonderful party as the Democrat Party! Lordy, does this put a burr in their thongs.
Well .. now I think I’ve found out why! A buddy of mine at CNN (who, for obvious reasons, shall remain unnamed) provided me with some interesting information.
Joseph J. Ellis wrote a book called ”Founding Brothers, The Revolutionary Generation.” I ordered my copy this morning. One of the Amazon.com reviews for this book says “This book is really unique in that it gives a really interesting perspective not only on the men [our founding fathers] , but the dynamic between them.”
Now in that book by this renowned historian you will find some tasty information on the origination of the word “democrat.” Many times I’ve told you that our founding fathers were none too fond of the idea of democracy, or, as they viewed it, mob rule.
Here’s the quote:
“… the term “democrat” originated as an epithet and referred to ‘one who panders to the crude and mindless whims of the masses.’”
Don’t you love it? Could anything better define today’s Democrat Party? Get with the program folks. It’s the Democrat, not the “Democratic” Party.
Heh.

Deployment Bill Killed
From our local news
Deployment Bill Killed
The Senate played spoiler on Wednesday to a bill authored by Virginia Senator Jim Webb.
In a 56 to 44 vote, the Senate has blocked a bill that would have regulated the amount of time troops spend in combat. Senator Webb tailored the bill to give the military the same time at home as they spend deployed.
Those in opposition say the military should manage deployments, not Congress. Most Army soldiers currently spend 15 months in combat and 12 months at home.
You think? You mean that the politicians shouldn’t be disctating to the military how to do its job? Whodathunkit?

Alabamadinnerjacket Visiting Hallowed Ground
Of course not. When you’re a crazed maniac, why should petty things like laws and official rulings make any dent in your plans?
People are starting to organize a “human ring” around the site to keep him out. NYC has enough people, but do they have the will?
From Dr. Jeff: This guy makes me sick. He’s an international criminal and should be treated as such.
Don’t we have any snipers left in the country?

Comments are broken (sort of) **UPDATED**
I have been working with Macker and Dr. Jeff, trying to fix the comments problems. There is something in the template that is keeping Firefox and Camino users (maybe more) from commenting on a post that has more than 0 comments on it already.
I am working on a fix and will update this post when it is completed.
**UPDATE**
I think I fixed it. All non-IE users, try commenting here and let me know.

I’m not entirely sure what he stands for, but I support him in his bid for the Democrat slot for president.
Let’s get this guy the nomination!

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot.
