Some Real Costs of Open Borders

TAXES
62 % of all “undocumented immigrants” in the U.S. are working for cash and not paying taxes, predominantly illegal aliens are working without a green card
The cost of immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 (last known calculation by Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University) was a NET (after subtracting taxes immigrants pay), $70 Billion per year.  [What are the 2006 costs?]
The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average illegal alien is $55,000 cost to the American taxpayer in a 5-year span.  You personally pay $11,000 every year to illegal aliens.
JOBS
(per Center for Immigration Studies - September 2006): Between 2000 and 2005, 4.1 million immigrant workers arrived in the U.S., accounting for 86% of the net inrease in the total number of employed persons (16 & older), the highest share ever recorded in the U.S. Of the 4.1 million, between 1.4 and 2.7 million are estimated to be illegal aliens.  Also, between 2000 and 2005, the number of young (16 to 34) native-born men employed declined by 1.7 million - at the same time, the number of new male immigrant workers increased by 1.9 million. [Do you still believe the gov’t employment rate stats?]

ACTION: Please share this data with elected officials, particularly those who spew the PCBS about all the “contributions of illegal aliens to our society” AND “our economy would collapse without them”!  However, NONE of this will matter IF our borders are not secured OR Pres. Bush succeeds in abolishing them (via his SPP, NAU, NAFTA Hwy), and illegal alien murders, drug smugglers and terrorists continue to be welcomed into our country

Walter F. Mondale: The man behind the curtain

Walter Mondale, that shining example of political greatness, shares with us his views on Bush - Cheney.

Walter Mondale Speaks

The Washington Post’s recent series on Dick Cheney’s vice presidency certainly got my attention. Having held that office myself over a quarter-century ago, I have more than a passing interest in its evolution from the backwater of American politics to the second most powerful position in our government. Almost all of that evolution, under presidents and vice presidents of both parties, has been positive—until now. Under George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, it has gone seriously off track.

Three decades ago we lived through another painful example of a White House exceeding its authority, lying to the American people, breaking the law and shrouding everything it did in secrecy. Watergate wrenched the country, and our constitutional system, like nothing before. We spent years trying to identify and absorb the lessons of this great excess. But here we are again.

Since the Carter administration left office, we have been criticized for many things. Yet I remain enormously proud of what we did in those four years, especially that we told the truth, obeyed the law and kept the peace.

Yo Walt, I know it’s been a while but it seems you forgot something:

Now granted, the Carter presidency predates me a teeny bit (I was born 24 Nov 1976 so Reagan is the first President I can remember) but my parents have told me all about how bad it was when Carter was POTUS. Now Mondale comes out and says he’s proud of what they did in that four years? WTF?

Whoopie Cushion

According to CNN, Whoopie Goldberg is the new co-hos of “The View”, replacing resident cow Rosie O’Donnell.

This ought to provide truckloads of blog-fodder.

Whoopi Goldberg was introduced as the show’s latest co-host Wednesday, joining Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the panel of ABC’s hit daytime show.

Goldberg replaces Rosie O’Donnell, who ended her controversial—but ratings-boosting—tenure in May.

Goldberg has won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony in her career. The Oscar was a best supporting actress award for her performance in 1990’s “Ghost.”

“I love this show,” Goldberg, 51, said upon joining the panel on Wednesday’s show. “I love coming on it. I love hanging out with you guys.”

“The View” has been undergoing tumult and turnover since the spring of 2006. In April 2006, longtime co-host Meredith Vieira announced her departure for NBC’s “Today” show. Later that month, the show announced it had signed O’Donnell as its new panelist.

In late June 2006, Star Jones Reynolds announced on air she was leaving in July. However, host and creator Walters announced the next day Jones Reynolds was gone from the show immediately.

O’Donnell joined the show in September. Her time with the show was marked by a much-publicized feud with New York real estate magnate Donald Trump and debates with co-host Hasselbeck, often O’Donnell’s ideological opposite. Ratings reached new highs, however.

In April 2007, O’Donnell announced she would be leaving in June. However, after a furious argument on May 23 with Hasselbeck over Iraq and the war on terror, O’Donnell decided not to return.

Headlines

In my opinion, the headline of a story is one of the most important things to get right.  It can convey the position and sense of a story before you even begin to read.  A headline that contains a play on words, coinciding with the content is a double-header in my book.  That being said, the headline also can convey a false view into the story.  It can bias a reader or inject ideas that are irrelevant or plain wrong before the reader even beings.

Such is the headline I just came upon:

Police: Disney Employee Molested Girl For Years

What are the immediate thoughts that come into your mind when you read that headline?  I mentally composed the story in about a half second, “knowing” what the article was going to be about.  Didn’t you?

Here’s what it really says:

CLERMONT, Fla.—A 54-year-old Disney maintenance man was arrested Friday on charges of sexual battery involving a child.

Christian V. Johnson, of Clermont, was arrested after police said he molested a girl on multiple occasions from the time she was 10 to 14 years old. An 18-year-old man also told police that Johnson molested him when he was 8 years old.

According to an arrest report, Johnson told investigators he did not see anything wrong with the sexual relationship he had with the female victim. He denied touching the male victim.

Johnson worked as an electronics maintenance worker at Walt Disney World and has been placed on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the charges.

The allegations did not involve children Johnson met at the park.

That ticks me off.  They wait until the very last sentence to dispell the mental image they concocted with the headline.

By the Flip of a Coin (An interesting followup to “I Don’t Believe in Luck")

We are innundated, daily, with the atrocities of the world.

I suppose it’s why they have the “lighter” side of the news.  No need to go completely mad, after all, here’s a water-skiing duck - that kind of thing.

My mom, who’s in her late 70s, thinks the world has gone completely insane.  She’s thought so for years.  I don’t necessarily disagree with her, but I always say “maybe it’s just the same, but we know more about it now”.  I’m not sure I can convince myself of that argument anymore.  We are, after all, at war.  A substantial part of the population doesn’t believe it, but I do.

So with all the brutality, visciousness, and fundamentalist crap we face on a daily basis, how do we stay sane?

Here’s one of my escapes: it’s the audition tape of the man who ultimately won this year’s “Britain’s Got Talent” TV show, hosted by none other than Simon Cowell.  I’ve seen it dozens - if not hundreds of times.

Take a peek at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA

Go ahead - follow the link now, and then come back.

Back already?  Great.

This isn’t me putting my head in the sand, thinking that the world’ll go away.

Quite the contrary.

To me, this is proof positive that there exists - in some of us - a fundamental beauty and decency that cannot be taken away.  Regardless of your musical persuasion, the sight and sound of an obviously humble and simple man can show us all that we can and must prevail.

The flip of a coin?

Paul Potts said in a recent newspaper interview that he flipped a coin before submitting his application to the show.

It’s lucky for all of us that it came up on the right side.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
