Light Posting Today

My wife and I are attending the 24th Annual Virginia Home School Convention in Richmond today and tomorrow. Will be posting as much as possible.

This is a chance for us to get away for a short weekend, see old friends, talk to vendors and talk about the kid’s education plan for next year.  Its a great way to end the school year and kick off the summer.

D-Day, 2007

What if the Normandy invasion happened this year; how would the MSN cover it?

They folks over at The Combat Report have a pretty good idea.

The Tueller Drill

I saw this thread on The High Road today, linking to Xavier’s site.  Very interesting.

The Tueller Drill is a self defense training exercise used to demonstrate vulnerability against a short range knife attack when armed with a holstered handgun. Many people believe that a gun beats a knife every time. Sergeant Dennis Tueller, of the Salt Lake City, Utah Police Department, showed emphatically that it is not that simple.

A common test of handgun skill is to start with one’s hands at shoulder level with a holstered gun and place two shots on a target 21 feet away within 1.5 seconds. Typically, those well trained with handguns can complete the drill in about one and a half seconds, although a select few can place the two shots on target in under one second.

How quickly could you defend yourself when someone is running at you?  What if you were in a mall parking lot and someone came out from behind a car and challenged you; how quickly could you prepare yourself for an attack?

Good stuff to train for.

Re-Start

We have mourned and celebrated the life of our beloved founder.  As many of you have noted, I do not belive the Skipper would have wanted to BMEWS site to die with him.  What happens to the site is ultimately in the hands of Sean, David and Brian, but in the meantime I plan to continue to post and carry on the tradition.

As you know, the “flavor” of the site cannot be the same without Allan at the helm, but we will continue to battle the forces of darkness, exposing them to the light of truth.  Moon-battery will continue to be a hinderance to real progress in this country and around the world, so we will do our best to show it for what it is - idiocy.

First out of the blocks this morning is Michelle Malkin with her outstanding coverage of the “Shamnesty” bill working its way through congress.

Reid has called for a vote later today on a motion to limit debate to 30 additional hours...It’s the “moment of truth” now...Sen. Jeff Sessions, who has been an eloquent and stalwart amnesty opponent, says tonight: “I think enthusiasm is waning for the legislation...”

Next is a piece on the same subject by Kim.

Via The Anchoress (whom I’ve never heard of before) comes this snippet:

If you will not deport 12 million people, you have to offer them a chance to redeem themselves. Otherwise, you perpetuate the very problem you criticize.

This, children, is known as a “red-herring” argument.

The goal is not to deport 12 million illegal aliens. The goal is to reduce the number of illegal aliens currently living here, by 12 million if possible.

The two are not the same thing.

There’s more in the queue for later.

Hoist the main sail boys, we’ve got us a wind!

Memories

Today we remember Allan C. Kelly, The Skipper of the good ship BMEWS.  As many have noted, he was a man who brought his own brand of humor and concience to his writing.  The blog was his baby, founded out of a desire to combat the “battiness” of liberal thought in America, and around the world.  Not many knew him very well, as he was a private man, but his public persona was one that endeared many.  Readers from all over the world checked in daily and weekly to see what the Skipper had to say.

Allan’s brother Brian scanned some old family photos to give us a glimpse into his earlier days.

Rest in Peace Skipper.  You are missed by many, but your memory will live on.

Allan Kelly - R.I.P.

I just received some terrible news from the Manchester police department. Allan was found dead in his townhouse. They are trying to contact his sons, but I had very little information to give them. David and Sean, if you read this, I’m sorry if this is how you found out, but I have no contact information for either of you.

I have no details, but am in contact with the PD there. I will update this post as I get more information.

Rest in Peace Skipper

** You Can Help **
The family has not asked that I do this, but I am sure there are an untold number of expenses they are going to be facing in the next couple of days and weeks.  So I have set up a PayPal donation button that the members (and lurkers) of BMEWS can use to contribute to the Allan C. Kelly Memorial Fund.  All monies received will be forwarded to Sean Kelly and a full accounting will be made on the blog showing what we have collected.

Thanks for the donations that have come in so far.  The Skipper was a man of modest means, and every bit helps.

Thank You!
As of this morning (Wednesday), we have collected almost $500 $600 for Allan’s funeral expenses.  This link gives you the up-to-date accounting of what we have collected so far, and will be updated as new donations come in.

Thank you for your generosity.  It means a great deal to Allan’s family and means a few less things to worry about.

If you have not given yet and would still like to, feel free as we will keep the fund open for a while still.

Update I
As you see in the comments from Allan’s brother and son, he will be buried in Montgomery, AL.  As plans are made and released by the family, I will post them on the front page here.  Thank you all for your comments and support.

Update II
I just got off the phone with Allan’s son Sean.  He, David and Brian will be up in St. Louis tomorrow to start sorting things out and making arrangements.  As soon as something is set, I will let you know here.

As far as the blog is concerned, we will not be having any posts for a couple of days.  After that, we will have to see what the next steps will be.  Obviously, it can not be the same without the Skipper at the helm.  We often joked that he was the thinker while I was the linker.  To maintain the same high quality of posts, we will need another thinker to contribute.  We’ll see what the best thing to do is when it is appropriate.

Update III
Apparently there is a limit to the number of comments a post will show, and it is set at 100 currently.  If anyone knows where in Expression Engine this setting is so I can expand it, please email me. (Fixed now - thanks Infinity!)

Update IV
Vilmar has graciously compiled a list of other bloggers covering the story:
Lisa
OldCatMan
Macker
Misha
Rodger

Update V
Rickvid had an excellent suggestion.  At 8:00pm this Wednesday, we will hoist a toast in honor of the Skipper.  Because this blog is read around the world, we will have a 24-hour rolling memorial for Allan.

New posts will begin on Thursday.

Update VI - Monday @ 3:30pm
Allan will be cremated, with a memorial service to be held later this week or next week in Montgomery, AL.
More details as they become available.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
