It Was A Dark And Stormy Night

It’s not entirely over yet (as of 7:45AM EST). Two Senate races are still a tossup but the rest of the night was a complete disaster for rational people here. The Moonbats are now in charge and will be for the next two years. They’re already barking loudly over their “victory”.

This “wind of change” is going to blow a cold, evil path across America. All we can do now is say to the Donks, “OK. Now what? Where is this big plan you have been bragging about?”

Me and you and a dog named Boo need to keep holding their stinking feet to the fire and see if they really can do anything meaningful or just hammer us with more of the same whining, complaining, obstructionist crap we’ve had to endure for six years.

Memo to Democrats: It’s time to put up or shut up. We’re watching.

Memo to America: Your taxes will begin increasing in 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 ....

And now for the good news ....

The Beltway-Manhattan media elite is now stuck “covering” Democratic majorities.  Sure, they will go easy on them, but it is much more difficult to cover for a majority than a minority.

And it is a wonderful day for new media, especially talk radio.  For two years we have had to defend the Congressional gang that couldn’t shoot straight.  Now we get to play offense.

I am concerned for the country that the Democrats have won, but the Republicans are indeed going to find this sojourn in the minority a potentially very good thing.

If the GOP adopts and refines the tactics the Democrats have used for the past four years all will be well two years hence, and perhaps even better than well.

Democrats Take Majority in House; Pelosi Poised to Become Speaker
(WASHINGTON POST) - November 8, 2006 7:19AM EST

Democrats captured a majority in the House of Representatives in midterm elections Tuesday, as voters delivered a rebuke to the Bush administration and the governing Republicans amid an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq and a rash of scandals tainting GOP incumbents in several states.

The Senate, however, remained up for grabs, with Democrats winning four of the six Republican seats they needed for a majority there. Control of the Senate thus appeared to hinge on key races in Virginia and Montana. In Virginia, where Republican Sen. George Allen trailed Democrat James Webb by fewer than 3,000 votes with almost all precincts reporting, no winner had been declared as of early Wednesday. And in Montana, challenger Jon Tester, the Democratic president of the state Senate, was leading in a race to unseat Republican Conrad Burns, a veteran senator tainted by the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal.

In Missouri, Republican incumbent James M. Talent conceded defeat early Wednesday to Democrat Claire McCaskill, the state auditor. “Our efforts fell a little bit short,” he said. Minutes earlier, McCaskill had declared victory after opening a narrow lead with 85 percent of precincts reporting.

In Tennessee, the GOP held the seat being vacated by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, as Bob Corker, the Republican former mayor of Chattanooga, defeated Democratic Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr., who had hoped to become the first black senator elected from the South since Reconstruction. “I think we will hold control of the Senate,” Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman said on CNN.

The Democratic victory in the House marked a fundamental power shift in Washington, where Republicans have held the chamber for the past dozen years. It put Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in position to take over next year as the first woman speaker of the House in U.S. history, and it posed a new challenge for President Bush during his final two years in the White House.

“Tonight is a great victory for the American people,” Pelosi said in a late-night speech in Washington. “Today the American people voted for change, and they voted for Democrats to take our country in a new direction.” She described the vote as a mandate “to restore stability and bipartisanship” in Washington and for “a new direction” in the war in Iraq.

“The American people voted to restore integrity and honesty in Washington, D.C., and the Democrats intend to lead the most honest, most open and most ethical Congress in history,” Pelosi said. She added, “And nowhere did the American people make it more clear that we need a new direction than in the war in Iraq. ‘Stay the course’ has not made our country safer, has not honored our commitment to our troops and has not made the region more stable. We cannot continue down this catastrophic path.” She called on the Bush administration to work with Democrats “to find a solution to the war in Iraq.”

Democratic Hopes Rest on 2 Tight Races
(WASHINGTON POST) - Wednesday, November 8, 2006 2:20AM EST

Democrats claimed victory in four crucial Senate races early today and held small leads in two others that would give their party the majority—and control of both congressional chambers. The Senate majority will turn on razor-thin races in Virginia and Montana, where recounts or legal challenges could delay the final outcome for days. Democrats moved within striking distance by ousting Republicans in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Missouri.

Republicans, facing voter hostility toward the Iraq war and the Bush administration, had hoped that the worst outcome would be a 50-to-50 Senate, allowing Vice President Cheney to break tie votes. With such a narrow margin, Senate Republicans probably would face difficult battles with the first Democratic-controlled House in a dozen years.

In every section of the country, Democrats attacked Republican incumbents for their links to President Bush, whose handling of Iraq was deeply unpopular with millions of voters. The war, coupled with Republican scandals, proved politically lethal to at least three GOP senators, including the party’s third-ranking senator, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. A sharp-tongued conservative and Bush loyalist, Santorum fell to Democrat Robert P. Casey Jr., the state treasurer and son of a popular former governor.

Another two-term Republican, Mike DeWine of Ohio, was hurt by events largely beyond his control, namely a string of scandals involving Ohio Republicans. Rep. Sherrod Brown (D), who touted his vote against the Iraq invasion, successfully hammered DeWine on his ties to the administration.

In heavily Democratic Rhode Island, Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee (R) stressed his independence from Bush and attacked the record of Democratic nominee Sheldon Whitehouse, a former state attorney general. But even his family’s famous name could not save Chafee this time.

Missouri’s Senate race had been close for weeks, with Democratic challenger Claire McCaskill attacking first-term Sen. James M. Talent’s ties to Bush. McCaskill, the state auditor, came out on top after campaigning feverishly in Missouri’s rural areas and small towns, where Democrats have faltered in past elections.

Republican hopes of grabbing Democratic seats in Maryland and New Jersey faltered, as spirited and well-funded campaigns appeared to fall short in states that traditionally are not friendly GOP turf. But Republicans won a tough contest in Tennessee.

And three-term Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (Conn.), who lost the Democratic nomination to antiwar candidate Ned Lamont in August, was elected as an independent. He will caucus with the Democrats.

Democrats needed six new seats to take over the Senate, where the GOP’s 55 to 45 advantage was built largely on victories in the South two years ago. This year, many of the toughest contests were in the Northeast and in heartland areas such as Ohio and Missouri.

The Democratic strategy of criticizing Bush’s war strategy—without necessarily offering an alternative—was effective, according to nationwide surveys of voters exiting polling places. Clear majorities of respondents said the Iraq war was important or extremely important to them, and most of them backed Democratic candidates.

Light Reading (not)

Since the Skipper is playing hooky today, I’ll give you all something to chew on.  Namely two articles that will consume your brain for a few hours.

First, the Geek gives us a history lesson on how we got to where we are and his plan for us to get out of it.

Second, Bill Whittle gives us part 1 of ”Seeing the Unseen”.

Read, digest, and be smarter for it.

The Skipper Is AWOL

First of all, this is an open post. Talk about whatever you wish here today. I’m afraid The Skipper will have to “skip out” (get it?) on you today. I have a busy day ahead as a volunteer poll worker and will have to leave you good people to play with yourselves today. Wait ... that didn’t sound right. Aw hell, you know what I meant.

Don’t let me down today. Go vote. And remember that no matter who wins what, we’ll all wake up Wednesday morning and we’ll all still be the same people with the same problems. In the meantime, here is a little something to get you through the day ... a reminder that not everything is politics - that there are still rainbows and bluebirds out there. You just have to look ....

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There’s a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
tune
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Euro-Peon Pussies

See the picture below? Those are Palestinian boys carrying signs protesting the death sentence of their hero ... Saddam Hussein. He is their hero because Saddam was paying out $25,000 to the families of all Palestinian suicide bombers. Their dirtbag parents and religious leaders took the money and sent their sons and daughters into Israel with explosives strapped on tight ... in much the same manner that you send your kids off to school every day - except your kids don’t blow themselves up. For money. From a mass murderer.

image

No, these “children” don’t want Saddam Hussein executed. Even more surprising, the leaders of European countries agree with them. They would rather see Saddam kept in a nice comfortable jail cell with all the amenities and allowed to live out his days in peaceful contemplation. Heck, in ten or twenty years, some of them might even propose to let ol’ Saddam have an early release - seeing as how he wasn’t such a bad fellow after all, eh?

Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain, speaking to reporters on Monday, said he opposed the death penalty for Mr. Hussein, joining several other European leaders and European Union officials who announced their opposition to the sentence. When pressed by reporters, Mr. Blair spoke of his longstanding opposition to capital punishment. He said he did not intend to protest the sentence, and condemned Mr. Hussein’s brutality.

European leaders insisted that the viciousness of the actions of which Mr. Hussein was found guilty had not changed their view that state-sponsored killing was wrong. Some warned that executing Mr. Hussein would only worsen the sectarian bloodshed in Iraq.

The Associated Press quoted Terry Davis, secretary general of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, as saying: “A country ravaged by violence and death does not need more violence, and especially not a state-orchestrated execution. Saddam Hussein is a criminal and should not be allowed to become a martyr.” Amnesty International said Sunday that it “deplored” Mr. Hussein’s sentence, describing the proceedings as “deeply flawed and unfair.”

A Swarm Of Locusts

It’s Election Day ... and lawyers will outnumber voters by a margin of 2 to 1 at the polling places. Forget Al-Qaeda and Islamofascists. We are being terrorized by a swarm of legal beagles. All of this could be avoided if we only had (1) National ID cards (with smart chips and biometric imprints), (2) bulletproof and hack-proof electronic voting machines connected to a national tabulating database recording votes in real-time and ... (3) voters intelligent enough to use all that. The first two are easily attainable. The last requirement will never be met. Too many Democrats ...

As Vote Nears, Parties Prepare for Legal Fights
WASHINGTON (NY TIMES) - November 7, 2006

A team of lawyers for the Democratic Party has been arguing with postal officials in Columbus, Ohio, trying to persuade them to process thousands of absentee ballots that have arrived with insufficient postage. In Pennsylvania, the Republican Party has opened a “recount account” and set aside $500,000 to pay lawyers who will answer telephones on Election Day and monitor polls to see whether officials demand proper voters’ identification. In Maryland, lawyers representing candidates for senator and governor from both parties met recently and swapped cellphone numbers and e-mail addresses to smooth out the logistics of potential litigation.

Several days from what Republican and Democratic campaign strategists expect to be a close election, the legal machinery of a messy fight is shifting into high gear. Democrats say they are most concerned that voters will be prevented from voting by long lines or poll workers’ demanding unnecessary forms of identification. Republicans say they are guarding against ineligible people trying to vote.

The parties are sending their largest concentrations of lawyers to states with the tightest races like Maryland, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee. Most of them are unpaid volunteers, though many from large firms are working pro bono to meet their firms’ expectation for hours of public service.

On Saturday and Sunday, hundreds of the 7,000 lawyers who are working on the election for the Democratic National Committee will board planes for Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio and 13 other states.

Their task is to reinforce local teams where party officials say they there is the greatest potential for long lines, voter intimidation or confusion at the polls and where they may need to file court petitions to keep polls open late. “We’re not going to make the mistake we did last time, which was to wait until after the election for litigation,” said Chris Redfern, chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party.

That party has spent $250,000 in legal fees on suits over new electronic voting machines and a voter identification law. The Republican National Committee is shipping out 150 lawyers on Monday to help hundreds of local lawyers in Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee and other states answering phones and working at polling stations policing against voter fraud.

“What is unfortunate is that it appears Democrats are following their playbook from 2004 and alleging voter suppression where it does not exist, in an effort to launch a pre-emptive strike,” said Tracey Schmitt, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

It is not just parties gearing up. In its largest mobilization ever for a non-presidential election, the Justice Department will dispatch about 800 lawyers to potentially troubled polling locations in 65 cities in 20 states to ensure voting rights laws are obeyed.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the N.A.A.C.P. and the People for the American Way Foundation will jointly have 2,000 lawyers fanning out across 20 states.

Show Me

As a citizen of the “Show-Me State”, I urge everyone who also lives in the Great State of Missouri to pay heed to Senator Talent’s message below. He’s a good man who doesn’t raise hell and rant like me so I’ll do it for him.

Claire McCaskill and the Democratic National Committee and their surrogates in the Angry Left have done everything in their power to smear Senator Talent. Outrageous lies have been told, expensive media blitz campaigns have been covering the airwaves with all manner of disgusting claims and accusations. They even drafted “Bubba” Clinton to come campaign for McCaskill.

Claire McCaskill is not the person we want in Washington representing us. Jim Talent is. He has done a great job for Missouri over the last four years and deserves our continued support. Get out and vote tomorrow and send Jim Talent back to Washington. We need all the help we can get. The Democrats will be in downtown St. Louis shuttling people from polling place to place to vote 2 or 3 or 4 times. They will have dead people and family pets casting votes for McCaskill. Only you can stop this evil plan of theirs.

So get off your butt, Missouri! Take time off from work. Call the babysitter. Do whatever you have to do. It only takes a few minutes to cast your vote. This country is counting on us to do our part to keep the lunatic Democrats out of office. Remember, if you don’t vote and the Democrats win, you only have yourself to blame when they raise our taxes, cut and run from Iraq, make us pay for human cloning experiments and run the country into the ground. I challenge all of you: SHOW ME YOU CARE ABOUT AMERICA!

GO VOTE!

image

Your vote is a sacred trust that I take very seriously in my role as a Senator. That is why I’m writing to you today to ask you personally for your vote. Elections are about the future and tomorrow’s election is in your hands. In less than 24 hours Missouri voters will head to the polls, where we will have the opportunity to decide the direction we want Missouri to go over the next six years.

That’s why it’s so important that you vote tomorrow - and in addition, why it’s critical that you remind your friends and family about this important election. Please let them know that I am asking for their vote and that I would be honored to serve another six years to make Missouri and our country better.

Before they vote, ask them these simple questions. First, do they want higher taxes and bigger government, or do they want lower taxes and a government that empowers people? Second, do they want representatives who believe in the values of Washington, D.C. or someone who will stand up for the common sense, conservative values of Missouri?

Let them know that if they want lower taxes, a government that empowers people and a Senator who will continue to stand up for the common sense, conservative values of Missouri, then I need their vote tomorrow. We can make permanent the tax relief that is driving economic growth and creating jobs in Missouri. We can lower health insurance costs for small business men and women and their employees.

We can protect the security of our country by making certain that our service men and women have the tools they need to win the War on Terror. We can control the border and protect our people from terrorism, drugs and illegal immigration. We can empower our farmers and ranchers so they can continue providing America with the safest, most abundant and most affordable food supply in the world.

We can protect the American flag from public desecration and the Pledge of Allegiance from judges who want to remove the words “under God.” We can protect traditional marriage. We can protect our Second Amendment rights. And we can protect the value and dignity of human life at all stages.

The opportunity to serve Missouri in the U.S. Senate - to fight there for the traditions and values of the heartland - has been the greatest professional honor of my life. I am more grateful than you will ever know for giving me that chance, for your faith in me.

Working together we have made this a great campaign about important issues facing our state and our nation. But now we must remind everyone across Missouri why it’s so important that they cast their ballots tomorrow. My friends, I would be honored to continue standing up for the common sense, conservative values of Missouri as your United States Senator. That is why I’m asking for your vote tomorrow.

With sincere thanks,

Senator Jim Talent

Reader Poll: Who Will Win?

Jackasses on the Left. Pachyderms on the Right. You and me and Homer are stuck in the middle. We’re too smart to vote for the jackasses but the elephants aren’t making us too happy either. What do we do?

The answer is as plain as the nose on your face. You go into that voting booth on Tuesday and vote your conscience. Remember that whoever you vote for will have the responsibility to protect you for the next two years - at least. Choose wisely, but no matter what you do ... go VOTE. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.

image   image   image

I know you’re all waiting for it so here are my ten best predictions for the election on Tuesday:

(1) Republicans will lose two Senate seats (PA & OH) but will retain control

(2) Democrats will fall short of taking control of the House by three seats

(3) Joe Lieberman will win in a landslide

(4) Immediately after the results are counted, no less than seven lawsuits will be filed to contest elections in three states, Jesse Jackson will be in all three states crying “disenfranchisement” at the top of his lungs

(5) The Donks will blame John Kerry, whose political career will effectively be over

(6) Within thirty days, both Hillary Clinton and Al Gore will announce they will not be running for President in 2008 - both will be lieing through their teeth

(7) Howard Dean will be removed as head of the DNC

(8) There will be two attempts on Karl Rove’s life

(9) The media will use the term “lame duck” no less than 10 million times in the coming week, regardless of the outcome of the elections

(10) Osama Bin Laden will release a tape of his Ten Greatest Hits, including the chartbuster hit “Doo-Wa-Diddy”

Now it’s your turn. Here’s your chance to make your predictions for the House and Senate elections on Tuesday. Let’s see how well you do ....

Reader Poll is now closed. Here are the results. Stay tuned to see how well you predicted the vote.

Campaign Sleaze

We have a winner for Most Outrageous Political Ad Of All Time. There is a group called Majority Action that is running this add on St. Louis TV stations practically every hour. They are also running the same ad all over the country with the names changed to the local Republican Congressman or Senator. From where I sit, this is the most disgusting political ad I have ever seen - even worse than Michael J. Fox with the tremors.

Let me set the record straight on a few things:

(1) Senator Talent supports medical research including stem cell research that doesn’t involve cloning or destroying a human embryo. Earlier this year, he also withdrew his support for a Senate bill that would ban all embryonic stem cell research and impose a million dollar fine and jail sentence on violators.

(2) Embryonic stem cell research has not produced 1 positive result. It is the LEAST promising area of research.Gene therapy research in Chicago has produced a 40% reduction in Parkinson’s symptoms and is believed to reverse damage already done. Michael J. Fox’s own foundation financed this study so when he refers to embryonic stem cell research as “the most promising” he is lying and he knows it.

(3) Contrary to what some misinformed people think, embryonic stem cells can not be “made into” anything. People just hope that one day they will. In fact, the only thing we know for sure is that embryonic stem cells are many times more likely to grow into tumors than adult stem cells are.

(4) Democrats and their evil minions have stooped to new lows when they use children pleading for their life as campaign tools. This ad is an abomination and the people behind it are sick.

Lamestream Media Has The Jitters

The NEW YORK TIMES is getting very nervous with pre-election polls showing Republicans narrowing the gap. It’s no surprise that some in the MSM believe the verdict against Saddam Hussein was contrived by the Administration to energize voters. Tin-foil hat alert in 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 ....

Bush Trumpets Iraq Verdict to Rally Support
WASHINGTON (NY TIMES) - November 5, 2006

President Bush on Sunday seized on the conviction of Saddam Hussein as a milestone in Iraq, seeking to rally Republican voters with the issue of national security as some polls suggested that his party might be making gains in the final hours of the campaign. The White House said the timing of the announcement, two days before Election Day, had nothing to do with American politics and had been dictated by the Iraqi court. But Mr. Bush moved quickly to put it to use in what has been his central strategic imperative over the past week, trying to rouse Republican voters to turn out.

“Today we witnessed a landmark event in the history of Iraq: Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to death by the Iraqi High Tribunal,” Mr. Bush said to roars of approval in a hockey auditorium packed with supporters in Grand Island, Neb. “Saddam Hussein’s trial is a milestone in the Iraqi people’s efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law.”

Senior aides to Mr. Bush scoffed at suggestions that the announcement of the verdict had somehow been orchestrated by the White House. “Are you smoking rope?” Tony Snow, the White House spokesman, said Saturday in anticipation of the verdict. “Are you telling me that in Iraq, that they’re sitting around — I’m sorry, that the Iraqi judicial system is coming up with an October surprise?”

The announcement out of Baghdad came as polls suggested some gains for Republicans. A Pew Research Center Survey released on Sunday found that the number of likely voters who said they would vote for the Democrats was now 47 percent compared with 43 percent who said they would vote for Republicans. Two weeks ago, Democrats had an edge of 50 to 39. A Washington Post-ABC News poll found a similar tightening.

These kinds of polls, about the so-called generic ballot, measure national trends and do not necessarily provide an accurate measure of what is happening in individual House and Senate races. Andrew Kohut, the president of the Pew Center, said the poll nonetheless found that Republicans were becoming more enthusiastic as Election Day approached, a sign that the party was making progress in addressing one of its main problems this year: a dispirited base.

With at least 20 House races and 3 Senate races virtually tied in polls over the past week, Republican officials have looked to the huge voter turnout operation the party has developed over the past six years as its last-stand defense to prevent Democrats from making big gains on Tuesday. A series of Mason-Dixon polls published on Sunday suggested a tightening in two Senate races, Rhode Island and Maryland, that Democrats had been confident of winning.

Republicans over the past week have spent heavily in Maryland on behalf of Michael Steele, the Republican candidate seeking to fill the seat being vacated by Senator Paul S. Sarbanes, a Democrat. In Rhode Island, Senator Lincoln Chafee, the Republican, has spent heavily and banked on his family’s long history in the state’s politics to help him survive in a heavily Democratic state.

Ken Mehlman, the Republican chairman, said polls showed that Republicans and conservatives “were coming home,” which he said “is what happens when voters focus on the choice before them.” Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, the Democrat leading his party’s effort to win control of the House, said, “It’s inevitable that there would be some tightening in the end.” Still, Mr. Emanuel, who has been careful this campaign to avoid the public expressions of optimism voiced by other Democrats, added, “This is making me nervous.”

Parties Crank Up Voter Turnout Efforts
Amid the Last-Minute Blitz, Some Polls Hold Positive Signs for Republicans
(WASHINGTON POST) - Monday, November 6, 2006

Republicans seized on signs of movement in their direction yesterday as they unleashed a massive election-eve voter mobilization operation in an effort to stave off potentially substantial losses in the House and preserve at least a slender majority in the Senate.

Democrats answered the Republicans’ get-out-the-vote machinery with intensified efforts to contact infrequent and still-undecided voters in a handful of tight Senate races as well as in more than two dozen GOP-held House districts where races were too close to call.

A Pew Research Center poll showed a significant narrowing in the partisan advantage in House races that the Democrats have enjoyed for much of the year, findings that echoed those of a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Saturday showing the Democrats with a six-point edge.

The Pew poll showed that the Democratic advantage had dropped to 47 percent to Republicans’ 43 percent among likely voters, down from 50 percent to 39 percent two weeks ago. The poll found a drop in Democratic support among independents, but Pew Director Andrew Kohut said the most significant change over the past two weeks is that Republicans now outnumber Democrats among likely voters.

Separately, a USA Today/Gallup Poll showed Democrats leading Republicans by 51 percent to 44 percent among likely voters on the “generic vote”—the question of which party voters intend to support in House races—down from a 13-percentage-point advantage two weeks ago. But the newspaper noted Republicans enjoyed a similar 7-point edge on the eve of their 1994 landslide victory.

Strategists sought solace in any survey that looked good, but with less than 48 hours remaining before the polls close on Tuesday, both parties concentrated on direct voter contact, built on months of sophisticated analysis of the electorate and microtargeting of tens of millions of voters around the country.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee expected to spend roughly $25 million on its voter mobilization efforts; the DCCC was set to spend $10 million. The Democratic National Committee has given the other committees about $8 million for get-out-the-vote activities.

Finally, ABC NEWS is concerned for Karl Rove’s legacy. Isn’t that just downright nice of them to be worried about “Bush’s Brain” at this late date? Somehow I don’t believe their concern is worth a hoot in hell ....

Karl Rove’s Reputation May Be on the Line
(ABC NEWS) - Nov. 6, 2006

If the legacy of President Bush is on the line in this Tuesday’s elections, so too may be the legacy of the man sometimes called “Bush’s Brain.” Karl Rove, the president’s chief political strategist, is trying to win one last — and perhaps most difficult — national election for his old friend.

Rove is revered and reviled. There are documentaries, books, Web sites and even condoms dedicated to him. He was featured on the TV show “South Park” and named the most fascinating person of 2004 by ABC’s Barbara Walters.

Walters asked Rove what he thought his reputation was. “Evil Rasputin,” he told her.

Republican strategist Marc McKinnon knew right away that Rove would be the most famous political consultant in history. “I thought he would five minutes after I met him,” McKinnon said. “He is a walking mainframe computer and the most talented consultant I’ve ever worked with — and I’ve worked with a lot of the best.”

Rove helped pull off surprise victories in 2000, 2002 and 2004 for President Bush, who calls him “boy wonder” and “the architect.” “He’s won three national elections working with Bush. This is the big one, though,” said Mark Halperin, ABC News political director and co-author of “The Way to Win.” “It’s going to determine whether George Bush’s last few years in office can be productive. It’s also going to help determine George Bush’s legacy.”

Democratic strategist James Carville believes Rove’s reputation hangs in the balance. “He wins this, he comes out of this with minimal losses, and his reputation will be cemented in history,” Carville said. “If he comes out of here with some big losses, then you might have Republicans 10 years from now spitting on the legacy of Karl Rove.”

Decision Time

It’s Up To The GOP Base
- by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

imageimageCan the Republicans win control of Congress? They can if they want to. It is up to the vaunted GOP base. According to the Zogby poll, Republican fortunes, while improving in early October, have fallen since.

On Sept. 22, Democrats led in the generic vote poll (Do you plan to vote for the Democratic or the Republican candidate in your district?) by nine points, 42-33. But by Oct. 11, their margin was only three — 37-34. But by Oct. 24 it was back up to 11 points — 44-33 — enough for the Democrats to take control of the House and probably the Senate.

But if you dig deep into the Zogby poll, you find an astonishing fact — independents are turning to the Republican Party while Republican base voters are leaving it! Among independents, the percent that plan to vote Republican has risen from 15 percent on Sept. 22 to 23 percent on Oct. 11 to 26 percent on Oct. 24. While independents are still voting for more Democrats, it’s only by 38-26 compared with 38-15 last month.

But as the Republican Party has gained among Independents, it is losing its base. Republicans who plan to vote Republican in 2006 have dropped from 75 percent on Sept. 22 to 72 percent on Oct. 11 to 68 percent on Oct. 24! Obviously the impact of the Foley scandal has yet to diminish among the morality-minded Republican base.

Historically, the Republican Party is able to attract much more support from its base than the Democrats have been able to do from theirs’. But now Democrats are more loyal than Republicans. On Sept. 22, Zogby had 82 percent of the Democrats voting Democrats and 75 percent of Republicans voting Republican. By Oct. 11, party loyalty on both sides had dropped and only 76 percent of Democrats voted their candidates and 72 percent of Republicans backed their party. But by Oct. 24, Democrats had come back to their party and 81 percent were voting for its candidates while only 68 percent of Republicans were loyal to their ticket.

GOP problems with their base should be curable since Republicans largely agree with their party on all the major issues. Their disloyalty stems from the failure of the Republican Congress and President Bush to pass their agenda and concerns over financial and morality scandals in Washington.

If talk-radio show hosts, cable news stations, and the White House do what they do best – talk to their base – they should be able to turn the situation around. But so far their efforts have been unavailing.

But the Democrats have their problems too. Despite their huge national edge they are not leading in the key Senate races. For example, in New Jersey, Rasmussen’s polls have the race between Republican challenger Tom Kean and Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez tied. But, in the same survey, New Jersey voters want Democratic Party control of the Senate by 54-36. So while the party is winning by 18 points, its candidate can manage no better than a tie!

And despite the national trend toward the Democrats, Missouri Republican Sen. Jim Talent still clings to a 50-48 lead over Democrat Claire McCaskill. Likewise in Tennessee, Rasmussen has Republican Bob Corker leading Democrat Harold Ford by 50-48. To control the Senate, Democrats must win two of these three: New Jersey, Tennessee and Missouri and so far, they trail in two and are tied in the third.

Why are Democrats trailing so far behind the national party trend? Because Republican negative ads are working so well and the GOP financial advantage is making itself felt in individual races. The Democrats, dragged down by their suicidal decision to install the fundraising challenged Howard Dean as national chairman, are simply finding it hard to compete on the airwaves in key states. Even Clinton crony Harold Ickes’s much heralded effort to fund Democratic races has fallen far short of its fund raising goals, having raised only $3 million of the projected $10 million for which he had hoped.

So voters in swing states are saying: “I want the Democrats to win, just not the guy running in my district.” It is still too early to tell if the national Democratic trend will assert itself in the end or whether the Republicans can pull out the swing districts. But the key will be whether the GOP base itself genuinely wants a Republican Congress or not.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
