Through The Looking Glass

“Pinwheel Galaxy”
-by- Hubble

Looking like a child’s pinwheel ready to be set a spinning by a gentle breeze, this dramatic spiral galaxy is one of the latest viewed by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Stunning details of the face-on spiral galaxy, cataloged as NGC 1309, are captured in this color image.

Recent observations of the galaxy taken in visible and infrared light come together in a colorful depiction of many of the galaxy’s features. Bright blue areas of star formation pepper the spiral arms, while ruddy dust lanes follow the spiral structure into a yellowish central nucleus of older-population stars. The image is complemented by myriad far-off background galaxies.

However, this galaxy image is more than just a pretty picture. It is helping astronomers to more accurately measure the expansion rate of the universe. NGC 1309 was home to supernova SN 2002fk, whose light reached Earth in September 2002. This supernova event, known as a Type Ia, resulted from a white dwarf star accreting matter from its companion in a binary star system. When the white dwarf collected enough mass and was no longer able to support itself, the star detonated, becoming the brightest object in the galaxy for several weeks.

Nearby Type Ia supernovae like SN 2002fk in NGC 1309 are used by astronomers to calibrate distance measures in the universe. By comparing nearby Type Ia supernovae to more distant ones, they can determine not only that the universe is expanding, but that this expansion is accelerating. However, this method only works if the distance to the host galaxies is known extremely well.

This Hubble image was taken in August and September 2005. NGC 1309 resides 100 million light-years (30 Megaparsecs) from Earth. It is one of about 200 galaxies that make up the Eridanus group of galaxies.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

We’re getting closer and closer every day to fulfilling the dream of Star Trek. The US is working on phasers (and probably photon torpedos but we can’t tell you about it) and now the Brits have announced they have broken the secret of cloaking devices. Meanwhile in Iran, the Borg are trying to figure out what to do with all those tribbles that Harry Mudd over in North Korea sold them. Mheh-heh-he-he ....

(Psssst! EYES ONLY: Before you start asking about the trans-warp drive development project, it’s in the works out at Groom Lake. Sshhhhhh.)

imageimageCloaking Device Idea Proposed
Wednesday, 3 May 2006, 16:34 GMT 17:34 UK

LONDON (BBC)—The cloaking devices that are used to render spacecraft invisible in Star Trek might just work in reality, two mathematicians have claimed.

They have outlined their concept in a research paper published in one of the UK Royal Society’s scientific journals. Nicolae Nicorovici and Graeme Milton propose that placing certain objects close to a material called a superlens could make them appear to vanish.

It would rely on an effect known as “anomalous localised resonance”. However, the authors have so far only done the maths to verify that the concept could work.

Building such a device would undoubtedly pose a significant challenge. Cloaking devices are a form of stealth technology much favoured by Star Trek baddies such as the Romulans and Klingons.

The complex mathematical phenomenon outlined by Milton and Nicorovici closes the gap a little between science fiction and fact. The phenomenon is analogous to a tuning fork (which rings with a single sound frequency) being placed next to a wine glass. The wine glass will start to ring with the same frequency; it resonates.

The cloaking effect would exploit a resonance with light waves rather than sound waves. The concept is at such a primitive stage that the scientists talk only at the moment of being able to cloak particles of dust - not spaceships. In this example, an illuminated speck of dust would scatter light at frequencies that induce a strong, finely tuned resonance in a cloaking material placed very close by.

The resonance effectively cancels out the light bouncing off the speck of dust, rendering the dust particle invisible. One way to construct a cloaking device is to use a superlens, made of recently discovered materials that force light to behave in unusual ways.

OK. Contest time again. Examine these pictures from a recent fashion show. Four of these ... erh ... uhh ... “outfits” look really nice. One looks weird as hell and I can’t finger it out. And one looks like something I might wear myself. See if you can guess which is which ...

Censor This!

Imagine if you will, a United States where bad news is never reported, every TV show has George Bush’s picture locked in one corner of the screen, newscasters referred to Dubya as a “god”, no criticism of Bush is allowed and Bush remained in power forever.

I apologize to any Liberal or Leftist readers out there who just went into shock at that picture. Don’t worry my little pinheaded friends. It won’t happen here in the USA, thanks to all of us “gun nuts” that you seem to hate so much. A well armed populace keeps government honest. Remember that.

The really painful part of this story below is that several of these countries serve in the UN on committees for Human Rights and other “watchdog” groups whose mission is to stop their kind of behavior. Yep, that would be the very same UN that your tax dollars help to support. Feel better now ... ?

North Korea Tops Most Censored Countries List
May 3, 2006, 4:37 AM EDT

UNITED NATIONS (AP)—North Korea’s media praises “Dear Leader” Kim Jong-Il every day but never reported the country’s famine in the 1990s. Myanmar bans anti-government sentiment in the media. Turkmenistan’s dictator approves the front pages of major newspapers—and they always include a photo of him.

The three nations topped the list of “10 Most Censored Countries” issued by the Committee to Protect Journalists on the eve of World Press Freedom Day. The other countries were Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Eritrea, Cuba, Uzbekistan, Syria and Belarus.

“People in these countries are virtually isolated from the rest of the world,” CPJ Executive Director Ann Cooper said Tuesday. “They’re kept uninformed by authoritarian rulers who muzzle the media and keep a chokehold on information through restrictive laws, fear and intimidation.”

“We call on the leaders of these most censored countries to join the free world by abandoning their restrictive actions and allowing journalists to independently report the news and inform their citizens,” she said.

The list is the first on censorship issued by the committee. Its regional staff, which researches press freedom abuses around the world, rated the degree of censorship according to 17 different benchmarks, including censorship regulations, jamming of foreign news broadcasts, imprisonment and harassment of journalists and the degree of state control of media.

The report noted that Equatorial Guinea’s state-run radio has described the president as “the country’s God,” and its only private broadcaster is owned by his son.

In Libya, which has the most tightly controlled media in the Arab world, no news or views critical of Moammar Gadhafi are allowed, and one critic who wrote for a London-based opposition Web site was killed last year, it said.

Most countries on the list are ruled by one man who has remained in power by manipulating the media and rigging elections, the report said. Cooper said the media fosters personality cults in Equatorial Guinea, North Korea and Turkmenistan, where President Saparmurat Niyazov’s image is constantly displayed in profile at the bottom of television screens.

I’m Not Dead Yet!

Today’s “Monty Python Moment” is brought to you by the state of Ohio prison system. This story illustrates why every one of these lethal injection executions needs to have a man standing by with a five-pound ballpeen hammer just in case. “I’m not dead yet!” WHAP! “Now you are.”

Killer Executed The Hard Way
Condemned man sits up and tells executioners, ‘It’s not working’
Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 3:07 p.m. EDT (19:07 GMT)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN)—A double murderer was put to death in Ohio Tuesday but not until after one of his veins collapsed, causing the condemned man to sit up and tell his executioners, “It’s not working,” officials said. The Ohio Department of Corrections said Joseph Clark, 57, was pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m. ET following an injection of lethal chemicals at the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville.

Spokeswoman Andrea Dean said the execution was delayed about 90 minutes because technicians had trouble initially finding a site in Clark’s arm for the intravenous line carrying the chemicals. Then shortly after the poisons were supposed to have been pumping into his body, she said, he sat up saying, “It’s not working. It’s not working.”

Officials determined that a vein had collapsed. Curtains were closed to block witnesses’ view until technicians found a vein in his other arm. They were then parted to reveal him dying, witnesses said. Ohio has used lethal injection repeatedly without similar problems, but this method of execution, used in all but one of the 38 states that impose capital punishment, is under legal attack.

Most Ridiculous Item Of The Day

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce “Red Ken” Livingstone. Our British readers here already know all about the distinguished Lord High Mayor Of London. This man is sorely lacking in the brains department yet he keeps getting elected thanks to the votes of Muslim immigrants whom he panders to.

About the closest thing we have to “Red Ken” in America is Howard Dean and “Screaming Deany” doesn’t even come close to Livingstone when it comes to insane acts. It would be interesting to introduce the two though and see which one could out-babble the other. Now that’s entertainment ....

London Mayor Livingstone In No Rush To Flush
Tue May 2, 1:29 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - London mayor Ken Livingstone has lifted the lid on his toilet habits, revealing he has not flushed the loo in 15 months. Livingstone said there was “no earthly reason” to bother if there was just urine in the bowl, he said Tuesday. He said people were misguided about what urine actually is—and said bluebottles steer well clear of his.

The mayor flushed out any misconceptions and tried to spark a chain reaction as he urged Londoners to waste less water when getting rid of their own waste. “Red Ken” said it was all based on the old adage “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” and advised gardeners to fill up a bucket and hurl it on the plants as the region around London suffers its worst drought for a century.

“If we continue to waste the amount of water that we do, London will run out of water,” Livingstone, 61, told The Independent newspaper. “A third of all the water you use you flush down the loo, and actually there is no earthly reason that you need to flush the loo if you have merely urinated. That’s a huge saving of water.

“The experiment in my home, which is now into its second year, has been a success. We continues with it right through the summer and never once did a great bluebottle come into the bathroom. “After all, why would a bluebottle with to slurp up a little bit of nitrogenous waste? It has no nutritional value at all. It’s just that people have a perception that their urine is some sort of liquid form of their excreta. “A lot of gardeners put their urine in a bucket and actually use it. Plant roots love it.”

All together now .... “We all live in a Yellow Submarine ...” tune

Using Both Hands And A Roadmap

Americans are lost. We can’t find s**t. It’s a wonder our troops were even able to FIND Iraq or Afghanistan, much less invade those countries. At least that’s what National Geographic found out recently. It’s a good thing we have smart people like Dubya to draw maps and create strategery.

What amazes me is the millions of Mexicans who manage to find America on a map and across the desert in the dead of night. Perhaps we could hire some of them to teach our school kids where the rest of the uncivilized world hides.

Speaking of which, how many of you can locate on a map the following countries: (1) Andorra, (2) Benin, (3) Bhutan, (4) Suriname, (5) Nunavut. Give yourself 20 points for each one you can locate. Ten points extra credit if you can find your a** without using both hands and a roadmap ....

Poll Shows Many Young Americans
Can’t Find Louisiana or Iraq on Map

May 2, 2006, 10:06 AM EDT

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn’t locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi. Despite nearly constant news coverage since the war there began in 2003, 63 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 failed to correctly locate the country on a map of the Middle East. Seventy percent could not find Iran or Israel. Nine in ten couldn’t find Afghanistan on a map of Asia. And 54 percent were unaware that Sudan is a country in Africa.

Remember the December 2004 tsunami and the widespread images of devastation in Indonesia? Three-quarters of respondents failed to find that country on a map. And three-quarters were unaware that a majority of Indonesia’s population is Muslim, making it the largest Muslim country in the world.

Among the findings:

* One-third of respondents couldn’t pinpoint Louisiana on a map and 48 percent were unable to locate Mississippi.

* Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news and just 14 percent believe speaking another language is a necessary skill.

* Two-thirds didn’t know that the earthquake that killed 70,000 people in October 2005 occurred in Pakistan.

* Six in 10 could not find Iraq on a map of the Middle East.

* While the outsourcing of jobs to India has been a major U.S. business story, 47 percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia.

* While Israeli-Palestinian strife has been in the news for the entire lives of the respondents, 75 percent were unable to locate Israel on a map of the Middle East.

* Nearly three-quarters incorrectly named English as the most widely spoken native language.

* Six in 10 did not know the border between North and South Korea is the most heavily fortified in the world. Thirty percent thought the most heavily fortified border was between the United States and Mexico.

- Get the full story at National Geographic ....

- Here is the full report ....

For those uneducated young people out there, what you see below is a map of the world which we stole from some liberal website somewhere. Obviously, liberals don’t know s**t either (except about commies). Don’t worry. We couldn’t find Louisiana on the map either. We think it’s somewhere down near the land of dragons. We could be wrong.

Banana Republic Theft

In our own backyard, the thieves are gathering together under Fidel Castro’s guidance to put the squeeze on gas and oil. Morales was elected President on a promise to nationalize the natural gas in Bolivia and now he’s delivering on that promise. Fortunately, the US doesn’t have a big natural gas interest in Bolivia so it probably won’t affect us much in the long run. However, it’s one more domino falling in the South American commie plot of Fidel ...

Bolivian President Seizes Gas Industry
Troops Deployed In Move to Block Foreign Influence
Tuesday, May 2, 2006

CARACAS, Venezuela (WASHINGTON POST)—Bolivian President Evo Morales seized control of the country’s natural gas industry Monday, sending soldiers to occupy fields that he contends private companies have plundered for years.

Morales said that unless foreign energy firms agreed to give Bolivia’s state oil company oversight of production and a majority of their revenue generated in Bolivia, the government would evict them from the fields.

“The time has come, the awaited day, a historic day in which Bolivia retakes absolute control of our natural resources,” Morales said during a televised speech from a gas field near the country’s southern border. “The looting by foreign companies has ended.”

Morales’s announcement was expected, but his deployment of troops to gas fields was a strong statement in a region where governments are moving to block outside influence, particularly from the United States, and exert more control over the energy industry. Venezuela recently voided drilling contracts with private companies at 32 oil fields, demanding new contracts that give the state oil company a 60 percent stake. Ecuador is finalizing a law that could limit excessive profits by foreign crude producers.

The developments in Bolivia were not expected to affect the U.S. energy market. Even in Bolivia, analysts played down the importance of the troop deployment, but they acknowledged the message Morales was trying to send.

We know what message he’s trying to send: they’re greedy and they want all the money while outside companies invest in equipment and drilling new wells.

Monday’s announcement coincided with May Day workers’ celebrations throughout the country. Morales had been under political pressure to announce the plan, which his backers consider a key to the success of his administration. He has said he plans to use increased state revenue from the takeover to fund social programs in South America’s poorest country.

Invest in social programs? My aching butt! How much do you want to bet that those “social programs” turn out to be new military hardware and a grand new palace for El Presidente? So who’s going to get hurt by all this?

Even though it recently reached oil independence, Brazil is the country that leans most heavily on Bolivia for natural gas. In the 1990s, the Brazilian government reinforced the country’s hydroelectric power grid with plants fueled by natural gas, and many of Brazil’s automobiles run on natural gas. About half of Brazil’s natural gas needs—520 million cubic feet daily—are supplied by Bolivia via a 2,000-mile pipeline financed mostly by Petrobras. In 2003, Petrobras discovered gas deposits within Brazil that some experts say could significantly ease demand, but tapping that gas could prove costly and difficult.

You guessed it. Brazil recently weaned itself off of foreign oil with an agressive energy plan (which we would do well to learn from) but now the Castro/OPEC conspiracy has Brazil over a barrel again. Now you know how international dirty games are played. Stay tuned for more. This will get much worse before it gets better. What will these tinpot dictators around the world do when the oil and gas run out? I’m sure they’ll find some other method of international blackmail so they can stay in the game.

MBS Evening News

imageimageGood evening. This is your Mexican Broadcasting System reporter Don Jose Rather reporting to you live from the White House command center in Washington.

The Bush administration has just announced that it will be resigning and stepping down under extreme pressure from millions, nay hundreds of millions of Mexican immigrants who are storming the cities of America shutting down all services and bringing the great American empire to its knees.

Vice President Cheney has reportedly commited suicide and President Bush has sold Jenna and Barbara into white slavery in Saudi Arabia to finance a plan to buy his Crawford, Texas ranch back from Mexico. It is reported that Vicente Fox is offering good terms on the mortgage.

Americans are currently stunned as they turn on their TV sets across this land and see the American flags being torn down and replaced with the proud colors of the green, white and red of Mexico.

It is a great day for the liberation of the hard-working laborers from Mexico as they see their dream come true of taking their country back from the hated gringos. ---- This just in on the wire ... John Kerry has announced he is changing his name to Juan Kerio and is divorcing Teresa to marry Charro ---- stay tuned for further updates ....

Alright! Enough Of This Silliness! Pipe Down Don Jose!

As it turns out, not much happened today. Yes, there were a few marches in large cities but overall it looks like America is still standing.

Catfish News Report

As any of you who own an aquarium know, the best way to keep your little pond clean is to throw a catfish in the mix. Catfish are known as “bottom-feeders”, that is they eat the s**t that falls to the bottom of the aquarium. Nobody knows what happens to their s**t. We probably don’t need to know either. Regardless, this is a new feature here at BMEWS called “The Catfish News Report” where we bring you news that fell to the bottom of the tank - usually with good reason.

For our first bottom-feeder report we pick up the tragic tale of Anna Nicole Smith and “Marshall’s Millions”. In our last episode, dear little Anna was crying and begging the justices of SCOTUS to give her “Marshall’s Millions” while that dastardly villain, Marshall’s son, tried to deprive her of her just rewards for having provided nearly a year of “nursing services” to the elder Marshall before he died (reportedly with a huge smile on his face and stretch marks on his lips). We now pick up our story as dear sweet little Anna leaves the SCOTUS building ....

imageimageJustices Side With Anna Nicole Smith
Former Playmate can pursue share of late husband’s millions
Monday, May 1, 2006 - 11:00 a.m. EDT (15:00 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Supreme Court ruled Monday that one-time stripper and Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith could pursue part of her late husband’s oil fortune.

Justices gave new legal life to Smith’s bid to collect millions of dollars from the estate of J. Howard Marshall II. Her late husband’s estate has been estimated at as much as $1.6 billion.

Smith has been embroiled in a long running cross-country court fight with Marshall’s youngest son, E. Pierce Marshall. The court’s decision, which was unanimous, means that it will not end anytime soon.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, writing for the court, said Smith should have a fresh chance to pursue claims in federal court.

Smith’s case had brought unusual drama to the normally sedate high court.

Dressed in all black, she wept in the courtroom in late February as justices discussed Marshall and whether he had intended to provide for his young wife in death. When Smith arrived at the court, several photographers were knocked to the ground in a scuffle to photograph her.

- Believe it or not, there is even more of this shit Catfish food at CNN ...
