Will Blog For Food

Hmmmm .... it seems one of the hottest new jobs in corporate America is .... blogging. Yep, you heard that right. Up until now, bloggers have been mostly composed of teeny-boopers keeping on-line journals, liberal lefties supporting Kerry and paid by George Soros and .... highly intelligent, good-looking, handsome, debonair, suave bloggers like .... yours truly. All right, stop laughing.

WALL STREET JOURNAL - June 1, 2005 - In its short lifespan, blogging has largely been a freewheeling exercise in online self-expression. Now it is also becoming a corporate job.

A small but growing number of businesses are hiring people to write blogs, otherwise known as Web logs, or frequently updated online journals. Companies are looking for candidates who can write in a conversational style about timely topics that would appeal to customers, clients and potential recruits.

Last year, Christine Halvorson was hired as chief blogger at Stonyfield Farm Inc., a Londonderry, N.H., organic yogurt company owned by Groupe Danone. She applied for the job after responding to an ad posted at Monster.com. A former freelance writer and Web content editor, Ms. Halvorson now writes four blogs for Stonyfield, including a blog about the company, the Daily Scoop, and Creating Healthy Kids, about healthy foods in schools. Her job entails researching, linking to news and providing personal insight.

Golly, getting paid to blog corporate America’s big companies? Sounds like too much fun ....

Currently only 4% of major U.S. corporations have blogs available to the public, according to a recent survey by eMarketer, a New York research company. But ads for blogging jobs are popping up on online job boards in recent months. “Blogging jobs are growing in popularity,” says Jennifer Sullivan, spokeswoman for CareerBuilder Inc.’s CareerBuilder.com, based in Chicago. She notes that in March she recruited a communications specialist whose job includes writing CareerBuilder’s blog.

Flycell Inc., New York, an 18-month-old provider of mobile-phone content such as games and ringtones, posted an ad on the technology-job site Dice.com in April for a “blogger/copywriter/editorial-content producer.” The ad includes the following description: “Create, maintain and promote a blog that covers and reports about mobile-phone content and the marketplace ... Must have experience creating and updating blogs, including creating links to other topical blogs ... Blog savvy is a must.”

The annual salary ranges from $50,000 and $70,000.

Dang! That’s not bad pay for this type of play work! You bloggers out there better get to work on your resumes right now. Corporate America may come knocking on your door any day now!

Wake Up Call

Web loggers, who pride themselves on freewheeling political activism, might face new federal rules on candidate endorsements, online fundraising and political ads, though bloggers who don’t take money from political groups would not be affected.

Draft rules from the Federal Election Commission, which enforces campaign finance laws, would require that paid political advertisements on the Internet declare who funded the ad, as television spots do.

Similar disclaimers would be placed on political Web sites, as well as on e-mails sent to people on purchased lists containing more than 500 addresses. The FEC also is considering whether to require Web loggers, called bloggers, to disclose whether they get money from a campaign committee or a candidate and to reveal whether they are being paid to write about certain candidates or solicit contributions on their behalf.

This blog would like the FEC to take note that it has received exactly no cents from the Republicans and no sense from the Democrats.

Deep Throat Unmasked …. For The Money

The man who was Woodward & Bernstein’s “anonymous source” for their Watergate investigation has been unmasked. It was W. Mark Felt, the former Number 2 man at the FBI (FOX News) ....

WASHINGTON — The Washington Post confirmed Tuesday that W. Mark Felt, the former No. 2 at the FBI, is “Deep Throat,” the famous source credited with helping blow open secrets about President Nixon’s Watergate cover-up.

Ben Bradlee, the Post’s top editor during the Watergate scandal, said in an interview with his old paper that he wouldn’t recognize Felt if he had seen him, but he knew all along that “Deep Throat” was a high-ranking FBI official and learned his name within a couple of weeks after Nixon’s resignation.

Buried deep in the news report is this curious little tidbit ....

According to the Vanity Fair article, Felt only allowed his secret to be revealed after prodding from his children, who argued his legacy should be established while he was still alive and that the family should reap some monetary rewards from his newly established place in history. (emphasis mine)

It’s curious because “Deep Throat” kept telling Woodward & Bernstein to ”follow the money” in the course of their investigation. His children and grandchildren obviously learned the lesson well. Greed is obviously the name of the game, both then and now.

(-- tip o’ the hat to Quidni for pointing this out to me)

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
